Went Out to Schoharie County This Weekend.

Went Out to Schoharie County This Weekend. Mostly the usual spots, although I hit up some spots I hadn’t been to a while. Visited Leonard Hill, picked up some fiddleheads up there. Eat some of them raw and cooked up others. Didn’t die of cancer yet. Nice springtime views. Then went to Mine Kill Falls, then over to John Borough’s Gravesite and cabin. Black flies were awful. Drove over to Mount Utsaythana via some backroads, crossing some beautiful mountainousness, but very rural country. It sure is beautiful around Roxbury and South Kortwright.

Then it was over to Burnt Rossman State Forest, where I camped up at Duck Pond. It was a chilly evening, but it was bug free. I like camping up there, as there is good radio reception up there and listened to people chat on the CB for a bit. Made a pretty good campfire and listened to some podcasts until a little after 10 PM, when I decided with the chilly air, it was best to retire to bed in the bed.

The next morning I had a nice breakfast, packed up, and went out to Looking Glass Pond for some Sunday morning fishing. At that point, I was the only one up there, but closer to noon, some of the turkey hunters came out of the woods, and started fishing. I had trouble keeping my hook free of fish, though mostly sunnies and a small perch. Probably would have done better if I used a bigger hook and bobber, rather then just a tin sinker and a hook.

Left a little after noon, went over to Mine Kill Falls. Hadn’t gotten to see the lower falls yesterday, as they were closing up when I got over there. The falls were dramatic with all that water going over them, and there was nobody was down at the lower falls. Burnt Hill Road, is as narrow, muddy, and rough as it’s always is, but was definitely passable in a 4×4 pickup truck. Of course, in the narrowest part of the road, there was a 1-ton pickup truck coming in the other direction. He ended up pulling off the road, as he had more room then me from the direction he as coming. I was worried that he got stuck on the soft shoulder, but he seemed to be able get his truck out.

Then I went to the Cliffs of Middleburgh and hiked along the Long Path. It’s a lot greener this time of year, then when I hiked there in March of 2010. I really haven’t spent as much time in Schoharie County, preferring to spend my summertimes in the Adirondacks. While the Adirondacks are much more wild, there is some great land out here too.
