September 3, 2016 Evening

Good evening! Today was the last day of the year with 13 hours of sunlight. Fall is coming fast. Partly clear and 58 degrees wilderness camping outside of Gilboa in the Northern Catskills. There is a north-northeast breeze at 5 mph. The dew point is 53 degrees.

Been years since I’ve done true wilderness camping, carving a campsite out of the back country on the side of the mountain. Two nights up on this mountain, going to swim during the day time at Mine Kill State Park. Might head a little farther up in the woods in search of squirrels, toss in a  line below the Schoharie Creek dam and definitely going to watch the sunset from the clearing on the mountain. The nice thing about wilderness camping where nobody has ever before done, is there is a ton of wood. And it’s very quiet. Except for the fireworks going off in the valley and my music.

Already on the mountain it’s starting to get a bit cool. I got the blaze orange  hoodie on but so far still in shorts.  Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low of 55 degrees at 4am. Two degrees below normal. Maximum dew point of 53 at 7pm. North wind 3 to 5 mph. The record low of 37 occurred back in 1946. Waxing Crescent Moon tonight with 18% illuminated. The moon will set around 10:32 pm. The First Quarter Moon is on Friday at 11:49 am with partly cloudy skies expected. The Full β€œCorn” Moon is on Friday, September 16th at 7:05 pm.

Today I changed my oil with a little help from dad in getting the filter off. I took them out to breakfast after that. Jake’s Cafe in Clarksville has pretty good breakfast. I swear this is the last time I’m going to change my own oil. It’s simple but I can never get the dang filter off.

I fixed the truck cap wiring once again last night, then tried to wire the up the mini amplifier I got to make the cheap  PA speaker louder. I discovered that the PA speaker wasn’t working. But I got the CB radio on a switch so it’s easier to switch on and off, and ran power for the dash board camera.

The dashboard camera works really well and takes beautiful pictures once I got the lens pointed away from the CB antenna and above the hood. Watching a video of driving Big Red is totally mesmerizing. I’m going to start posting the most scenic trips onto the YouTube once I get back home.

They are really shooting off the fireworks today. Then again loud noises rend to echo up from the valley. I really lucked out discovering this wilderness area for camping. It’s really nice and never been used as far as I know for camping. Little hard to find your way off the ledge back to the truck after dark though, but at least it’s close to 200 plus feet from the road, and totally invisible. Almost got somewhat lost going back to my truck to put away grar, facing a steep drop off. Based on where I found parking, you’d never be able to guess where the campsite is.

Tomorrow will be sunny, with a high of 74 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees below normal. Cool end to summer. Hopefully I won’t freeze at the Mine Kill State Park. Maximum dew point of 55 at 10am. Northeast wind 6 to 9 mph. The record high of 97 was set in 1929. The sun will rise at 6:24 am with the first light at 5:56 am, which is 1 minutes and 3 seconds later then yesterday.

Looking ahead, Citizenship Day is in 2 weeks, First Day with Average High Below 70 is in 3 weeks, October 1st is in 4 weeks, Make a Difference Day is in 7 weeks and New Years Eve is in 17 weeks. Before you know it, you’ll be listening to that old Guy Lombardo record.
