September 24, 2016 Evening

Good evening! Clear and 49 degrees at the Jones Hill Overlook in Apulia Station. There is a north-northwest breeze at 8 mph. The dew point is 40 degrees. Very clear and dry. And cold. It beats those muggy summer nights. The hoodie helps a bit. I can’t wait for autumn and winter camping, curled up by the Big Buddy Heater.

Definitely pretty chilly but real beautiful on Jones Hill. Firery colors post sunset and as we head into the eight o’clock hour, stars are popping up in the sky. It was a quick scramble up the mountain but it was worth it for the beautiful sunset. Now that the stars are coming up, they are pretty.

I really like overlooks where you can see towns and villages after dark. I always like looking down and thinking of all the people down there, those who work the land and those who are sitting by the bonfire on this rather chilly evening. Only the slightest amount of light is still bouncing over the horizon. The stars are getting quite amazing. I wish I had gear to spend the whole night in the woods up top of this mountain.

In many ways I’m just glad to be out of the city. In suburbia everything seems so fake. Generally people who live in Albany live in a bigger bubble then the more working class blue collar North Syracuse, but it ain’t country by any means. When you drive through LaFayette and drop down into Big Bend, it’s like you have dropped into another world. And I saw somebody burning garbage in a burn barrel, and the pyro that I am it tickles me. The pyro I am, I dream of the day I move to the country and heat with wood and use fire in many productive ways. But for now, I’m happy with sitting next to a campfire. And I like the good money my job produces, my jacked up truck, my guns, the cheap beer and gasoline that keeps me going. I still have many years of my life to get out of the city and New York State permanently.

Tonight will be clear, with a low of 38 degrees at 6am. 10 degrees below normal. Cooler up here in the mountains then in the city. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm in the evening. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1963.

Waning Crescent Moon late tonight with 38% illuminated. The moon will rise around 1:25 am. After I make it down the mountain. The New Moon is next Saturday at 12:11 am with partly cloudy skies expected. Great weather for looking at the stars. The Full β€œHunter” Moon is on Sunday, October 16th at 4:23 am.

Tomorrow will have patchy frost before 8am. Otherwise, sunny, with a high of 58 degrees at 3pm. 10 degrees below normal. Maximum dew point of 38 at 7am. Calm wind becoming north around 6 mph in the morning. The record high of 89 was set in 1970.

In four weeks on October 22 the sun will be setting at 6:09 pm, which is 46 minutes earlier then tonight. The average high is 57 degrees, and the record for that date is 86 degrees was set back in 1979. We will be well into autumn by that part of the year. I was reading today that Syracuse averages it’s first measurable snow by November 6th.
