Run Down Campsite Along Boreas River and NY 28. The picnic table and fire pit was in pretty rough shape, although the outhouse looked a little better off. It's obvious the state has put no repair or effort into the upkeep of this camping area since the early 1970s, although it does appear that it has been mowed.

Outhouse Along NY 28/Boreas Camping Area. One good thing about Vanderwhacker Wild Forest, much like Moose River Plains, is most of the campsites have outhouses, which helps keep things cleaner. Many of them seemed to be in decent shape, unlike the fire pits and picnic tables (where they existed), which where rotten and in serious disrepair.

Field Camping Area. Supposedly they where going to reduce this area down to one large camping area (with the remains of three fireplaces in it), and make other improvements under the Unit Management Plan, but it's obvious that Vanderwhacker has not had any money invested into it in a very long time.

Boreas River. Looking North from the camping area along NY 28N... This part is relatively flat water, but fast moving (in part due to spring), and below NY 28N, you start to get back into the rapids.

Hewitt Eddy / Boreas Trail. This is another trail to explore in the future, although I bet you this past weekend it would have been pretty, with all the water coming down the Boreas River.

NY 28N Over Boreas River. Those clouds look scary, although we got no more rain for the rest of the day. Also, notice the beautiful COR-TEN guard rail, which is rapidly becoming an endangered species, as the DOT is going back to stainless. Maybe at specifically scenic locations, like here, they will choose painted stainless guard rail, as used on the bridge rails here (but not the guardrail).

Vanderwhacker Firetower Trail Sign. 5.7 miles, if you include the first 3.2 miles you can drive on this rather rough and muddy truck trail back there -- at least time time of year.

Vanderwhacker Trail. Here is the head to Vanderwhacker Trail. While I didn't hike it, due to being pretty hot and humid, it was a pretty good muddy and bone jarring drive up to there.

Less Muddy Section of Moose Club Way. Moose Club way had a little gravel reinforcement in parts, especially the muddiest parts. It was passable, but in some parts was really pretty bad.

Muddier Section. Parts of Moose Club Way where pretty slick. Fun to go through, but also a little scary, because this a pretty remote part of the Adirondacks. There where a couple of moderately steep hills on the truck trail, that going up like this was a bit rough. You can understand from this picture, why the some of the Adirondack Truck Trails are still closed.

Nice Campsite Along Vanderwhacker Brook. There also was a nice looking fire place, probably used by hunters camping here in the fall, and an outhouse. No picnic table though.

Mud Soaked Ford Ranger. Did I mention that Moose Club Way was awful muddy? Fun though. I wish I had remember to top off the windshield washer fluid first though. The kayak road perfectly fine on the roof, tied down with bungees and ropes, despite the rough truck trail.

Open Outhouse at Boreas Brook Campsite. It works. A little privacy from views of the campsite, and it's not likely other people would be found wandering the woods around here, except maybe during big game season.

Another View of Vanderwhacker Brook Campsite. There are two other campsites near this area, however by far I fell in love with this campsite. I would have stayed here, but it's a ways back, and I wanted to explore the rest of the forest. I also was worried about the risk of bad weather washing out or making this already super muddy road even muddier.
