Hunter Mountain is the second highest peak in the Catskills at 4040 feet. It features a fire tower on it's peak, along with several trails to reach it. These are the pictures I took on that particular Sunday in February.

Starting Up the Spruceton Trail. Rusk Mountain can be seen in the background.

Along Old Hunter Road. The first part of the Spruceton Trail follows the 30-foot wide old Hunter Road, which was maintained until 1937 and went from Spruceton to Hunter, cutting off 16 miles from the trip.

Reaching the Saddle Between Rusk and Hunter. Saddle is such an appropriate word for a horse trail. That said, the intense sunlight was giving me a bad case of sun blindless. I should have brought sunglasses.

1.7 Miles to Hunter Tower. This sign was ever so not reassuring, especially as I was suffering from serious snow blindness by now.

Walked 1.2 Miles So Far. Which seems wonderful, an 1:15 into the hike, except for the fact that the next sign says it's another 1.7 miles plus an accent of 1100 feet.

Looking Down a Steeper Trail. After passing the saddle between Rusk and Hunter, the trail narrows and follows a series of switchbacks. It's not very steep for mountain trails at 15%, and easily ski-able, but it certainly gains 500 feet in elevation relatively quickly over the next 6/10 mile to John Robb Leanto.

Spring. This spring on the trail is near the John Robb lean-to. They don't horses drinking out of the spring, or actually you know what they don't want horses doing near the spring.

Patterns. I noticed this near the lean-to. You can figure out what it is from, but I liked the reds against the yellow.

Trail to Lean-To. The John Robb Lean-To is located a ways off the main Spruceton Horse Trail. It's a steep descent to the lean-to, climbing through a rock wall.

Snow on Trees. Right above 3500 feet, ever so beautifully, snow stuck on the trees. This may have been from the snow squall I noticed on the drive on up.

Flat Section of Trail. In the ridge in the distance, there is the Hunter Mountain Fire Tower. Being still 3/4 a mile away, it appears very small.

Balmy 24 Degrees. I thought it would be much colder up there. That said, it was breezy on top of the tower, which was throwing snow.

Nail Through a Horses Head. I guess the NYSDEC Ranger doesn't like horses, or these markers where badly designed. Then on cross-country ski trails, the poor skiers get a nail put somewhere quite painful for a guy.
