Crane Mountain
on July 5, 2009.

Pictures from a hike on top and around of Crane Mountain in the Adirondacks on a beautiful July day. These are the pictures I took on that particular Sunday in July.

... locations of photos are estimates that were done using heads-up digitizing.

Climbing.

Crane Mountain on July 5, 2009.

Kodak Z7590 Zoom Digital Camera, Exposure: 1/800 sec, Aperature: f/4.0, ISO 80, EV -4/3, Focal Length: 38mm.

A Little Higher.

Clove. This clove is between Mt Blue, with Kettle Mountain and Harrington Mountain in the Background.

Kodak Z7590 Zoom Digital Camera, Exposure: 1/200 sec, Aperature: f/2.8, ISO 400, EV -2/3, Focal Length: 38mm.

Mini Waterfall. The shallow soil on this mountain (probably part from glaciers and part from deforestation) lead to waterfalls running down the rock base of the mountain. It was purty for sure.

Turn Left. There are minimal trail markers along the trail, with most of them installed in 1969, back when the state last had a big initative to improve trails under Governor Rockefeller. Fortunately, the trail was worn and relatively easy to follow.

Bare Face. You reach a part of the trail where it has great views, as you climb up exposed sloped rock surface for a while.

Kodak Z7590 Zoom Digital Camera, Exposure: 1/1250 sec, Aperature: f/5.6, ISO 400, EV -1/3, Focal Length: 38mm.

Better Views. The farther you get up, the views get progressively better. Still 7/10 of a mile to the top.

Even Higher. The view farther up the trail.

Trail Splits. You can choose from here to go up the rest of the way to the summit or jump directly to Crain Mountain Pond. This route is better then the alternative route from the parking lot to Crain Mountain Road, which has steeper slopes (not that this route is flat), and longer.

Kodak Z7590 Zoom Digital Camera, Exposure: 1/250 sec, Aperature: f/3.2, ISO 400, EV -2/3, Focal Length: 139mm.

Climbing More Exposed Rock Face. This section is a bit steeper then previous sections

First Ladder. Then the trail gets step enough to demand a ladder. You probably could climb up this without the ladder, but it might be rough on the knees, to say nothing if you had a pack on your back.

Crane Mountain on July 5, 2009.

Kodak Z7590 Zoom Digital Camera, Exposure: 1/320 sec, Aperature: f/2.8, ISO 400, EV -1/3, Focal Length: 38mm.

Flattens Out. After the first ladder, the trail flattens out for a half mile, for a delightful walk past several small marshlands.

Kodak Z7590 Zoom Digital Camera, Exposure: 1/800 sec, Aperature: f/2.8, ISO 400, EV -5/3, Focal Length: 38mm.

Second Ladder. This ladder up the rock face is not all that scary, despite the fact you might want to tie down your pack first, securely to your back. It's only about 30 feet of ladder, and it's securely bolted into the rock face, you have no real danger of falling with the ladder. It's steps well proportioned, and not a bad climb.

Preview of What's to Come. After the latter, there is a nice little place where you can catch your breath and collect your thoughts. This is only a hint of views to come.

Due South. This is looking basically due south, from a view spot after climbing the second ladder.

Thru The Trees. Looking again through the trees from even higher. Somehow I like the framing a lot with these kind of pictures.

Last Climb to the Top. Finally made it !! Actually, despite being a steep scramble up many parts, it's only 1.4 miles from the parking lot, and only 1,300 feet. It's a real nice hike.
