Bright Sunny Snowmobile Trail. The entire Black Mountain-area is Wild Forest, so it is traversed by snowmobile trails. I took the snowmobile trail / old woods up Black Mountain, because it was easy to snowshoe up.

ATV Use Prohibited. They don't really have any ATV trails left in the Adirondacks on State Lands, due to the radical environmentalists suing, and the DEC not really doing much to defend their trails.

Intersection of Yellow and Red Trails. The yellow trail heads down to a delightful chain of ponds, including Black Mountain Pond, while the red trail goes to the peak of Black Mountain.

Narrow Snowmobile Trail. As the snowmobile trail climbs the mountain, it narrows and grows progressively steeper. It's not a bad trail for snowshoers, as the snowmobiles must proceed slowly up such a steep mountain.

Lake George. There are no views to the south of Black Mountain as the Firetower is currently closed with radio equipment on top of it. Yet, the views to the North are northing short of spectacular, looking all the way to Ticonderoga and Mount Defiance, with Lake Champlain just beyond it.

Tongue Mountain Range and Lake George Wild Forest. Looking east from the top of Black Mountain, at the many peaks that make up the Lake George Wild Forest. Many of these peaks are privately owned, with hunting camps on them, and some used for timber resources. Somewheres in between the peaks is Brant Lake and Horicon.

Black Mountain Fire Tower. It has been converted over to an emergency communications tower for the DEC Forest Service. I was disappointed, as I had hoped to climb it to enjoy the great views to the south.

Vermont. The marshy southern part of Lake Champlain is not visible in this picture due to the Bark Mountain, Sugar Loaf, and other mountains in the foreground, but beyond that is the relatively flat lands of the Lake Champlain Valley around West Haven, VT.

Sign to Foot Trail Down Back of Mountain. I decided not to take the much steeper foot trail down the mountain with my snowshoes, as the snow was rather deep, and not well packed down. I also did not know how steep the trail was, so I decided to go back down the mountain the way I first came up it.

About the Communications Tower. This is an interesting sign, although I hope when they remove the telecomunications equipment, they save the fire tower, for the views to the south.
