On our way to 86 degrees. โ˜€

Refreshingly cool this morning but I’m sure it will warm up quickly as the day progresses. Probably want to draw my shades in my office as it will get warm inside.

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Clear and 56 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒ… Some haze to the east adding some oranges and yellows to the sunrise. Calm wind. The dew point is 45 degrees. Not very humid but not bone dry. I heard there was wildfires out in Schoharie out by the 88.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 86 degrees at 3pm. 28 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 48 at 2pm. Light and variable wind becoming west 5 to 10 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 77 degrees. The record high of 87 was set in 1977. 5.5 inches of snow fell back in 1950.โ„

Going to be a hot one it seems ๐Ÿ˜ฐ but not a lot of humidity. The breeze might actually make it feel nice in the evening. Should be a really nice day.

Yesterday I made up the shrimp ๐Ÿฆ and rice ๐Ÿš I was thinking about on Tuesday. Really hit the spot. I cooked the rice, onions and lentils before work and thawed a few precooked shrimp during the day in the fridge. Great summer meal, no need for any salt or seasoning in the rice as the shrimp and onions provided all that was needed.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:57 pm with sun having an altitude of 56.4ยฐ from the due south horizon (-14.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:57 pm with the sun in the west (277ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ

I was looking at some old pictures from high school and was noticing how much thinner I am โ˜บ then twenty years ago. Some of it is my more recent healthy eating and walk ๐Ÿšถ program though I think the first drop was in college walking and biking the rural roads around my house then moving to the suburbs and walking most places in my neighborhood. But there is more to do but I’m learning a lot and the things I buy and put in my body are different at age 40 are different than younger years.

The sunset is in the west-northwest (283ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:35 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 59 seconds with dusk around 8:03 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:39 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 80 degrees. The dew point will be 49 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will have 13 hours and 23 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 48 seconds over today.

Yesterday I walked out to Five Rivers ๐Ÿธ after work. Worked out to be 25,000 steps or 12 1/2 miles for the day. I’ll have to keep Five Rivers in mind for evening walks, especially as the days get longer. It’s a nice change from the Town Park.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 55 degrees at 6am. 19 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 6th. Maximum dew point of 51 at 11pm. West wind around 6 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 45 degrees. The record low of 19 occurred back in 1973.

Mild but cloudy for the weekend. ๐ŸŒฅ Saturday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. Southeast wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 54 at 7pm. Sunday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 67. Maximum dew point of 52 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 59 degrees.

Looking ahead, there are 2 weeks until Arbor Day ๐ŸŒณ when the sun will be setting at 7:52 pm with dusk at 8:20 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 51 and 39 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 65 degrees. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1962.

Last Light of the Day

January 15, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Long weekend ahead but it’s Martin Luther King Jr weekend in the bleak of winter and it’s going to rain during the pandemic so don’t get so excited. Two weeks to my 38th Birthday ๐ŸŽ‰ . Getting old you might say. Probably not wiser, but I haven’t burned my hand with dripping plastic in a few years. Maybe because I live in the city for now, less chance for making black smoke and injuries with fire.

Partly cloudy and 30 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… A little bit more sun right now for my talk then lately, but hardly a banner morning. But wait there is more — going to cold around my birthday but probably with more sun. Calm wind. So it make it feel fairly mild. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Things will start to thaw out at around 10 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Honestly, right now a pretty nice morning for the walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป. Seeing the sun โ˜€ is refreshing not that is expected to last. But it is promising to return for late January and be cold โ„. I expect an absolutely frigid February like has been the norm but the strengthening sun angle means any extreme cold and snow ๐ŸŒจ we get in late February won’t last.

Today will have patchy fog before 11am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a high of 40 degrees at 2pm. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 4th. Calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 8 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 47 degrees. The record high of 65 was set in 1995. 13.4 inches of snow fell back in 1983.โ„

Morning walk now, ๐Ÿšถand later it’s off to head downtown for paperwork and a meeting. I am a bit hesitant with the Corona ๐Ÿ‘พ and riding the bus, but I’ll mask up. ๐Ÿ˜ท ๐ŸšŒ I was surprised to see from that graph I posted last night that 1 in 20 Albany County residents so far has had COVID — it’s really been popping up a lot the past two months, although some has to do with testing. At least Albany County is still not in the yellow or orange zone. ๐Ÿšฆ I really can’t complain about the weather. At any rate it’s nice to get out of the apartment — the morning and evening walks are great but working from home seems so trapping at times, especially when it’s cold and I can’t be outside or in the wilderness. โ„ No more of this working and camping outside of Speculator at least until the springtime.

Yesterday I got to the store and bought the world’s biggest box of Bisquick and cereal. ๐ŸฅฃI try to buy in bulk to reduce the amount of trash because I don’t like going to the transfer station as it costs money and living in the city means fewer opportunities to burn things. ๐Ÿ”ฅ No more free paper recycling. โ™ป I think buying such a big box of Bisquick last time, and eating so many Bisquick biscuits like five years ago was why I stayed away from it. ๐Ÿฅž I guess there is also Bisquick pancakes and other things on the package I can make to use it up. I also fueled up Big Red โ›ฝ because my tank was low, and I wanted to have fuel in case shit gets real next week ๐Ÿ’ฃ and I need to evacuate. I don’t expect next week to be crazy, but there are some on the left who are sure it’s going to be nuts. ๐Ÿ‘Š Well I have my truck, and I’m working from home and I know plenty of places to hide out if necessary. ๐Ÿš— That said, I expect Inauguration Day to be boring, and I’ll watch it from home or maybe down at the library. ๐Ÿ–ฅ Really do need to cut down my bandwidth a bit to make it through the month. Too much streaming video, even though I have a so-called unlimited plan.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:06 pm with sun having an altitude of 26.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-44.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:04 pm with the sun in the southwest (234ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (242ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:48 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 18 seconds with dusk around 5:18 pm, which is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the southwest (223ยฐ) at an altitude of 20ยฐ from the horizon, 242,654 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:54 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 38 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 25 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 39 seconds over yesterday.

I am watching the bandwidth I’ve been using with my phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ over the past three weeks, and I think ๐Ÿค” I need to be careful about how much data I use. While I’m well below the 20 gb Hotspot limit I want to keep the unlimited mobile under the 60 gb for a month to avoid potentially triggering a teems of service review even if I think my usage is consistent, but I don’t have Wi-Fi at home and I use it for a lot of work video streaming and video meetings. ๐Ÿ“น But I really don’t need to watching hour long videos on my phone of manure drag lining as fascinating as that may be. ๐Ÿฎ ๐Ÿšœ ๐Ÿ’ฉ I can always download those kind of videos at the library and watch them on my laptop.๐Ÿ’ป I also don’t want to get to addicted to watching videos on my phone — one the pandemic is over or warmer weather comes back, I fully plan on going back to my cheaper phone plan without the hotspot or unlimited mobile data. I like walking down to the library or the park when I want to use the internet at night. Keeps me on a schedule, makes it so I’m not staying home all of the time.

Tonight will have a slight chance of rain and snow before 10pm, then rain. ๐ŸŒง Low of 36 degrees at 8pm. 22 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 11th. Southeast wind 8 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. In 2020, we had partly cloudy skies. It got down to 24 degrees. The record low of -16 occurred back in 1971.

Tomorrow will rain, mainly before 1pm. ๐ŸŒง High of 41 degrees at 12pm. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 7th. East wind 9 to 14 mph becoming light and variable. Winds could gust as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 42 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1995. 15.1 inches of snow fell back in 1945.โ„

Well I could have dreamed of getting up to the Adirondacks this weekend, ๐Ÿ• but I knew that was unlikely with the normally lousy weather that is the norm this time of year. It’s going to be kind of wet, but I downloaded several videos and I have books to read too. ๐Ÿ“š I really should do more reading. I am probably going to go out to the folks house on Monday, but I’ll see what it’s like. I would be nice to get out and some hiking — maybe Martin Luther King Day but it’s going to be cold.

Looking ahead to Sunday, isolated snow showers. ๐ŸŒง Mostly cloudy, with a high near 38. Breezy, with a west wind 9 to 14 mph increasing to 16 to 21 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 36 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Typical average high for the weekend is 30 degrees.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 64 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ Day by day spring is coming. Did you see my post about Rensselearville and trout season? It’s only like a few months away until April 1st, although truth be told, most of the good trout holes are located in places where I don’t have cell service which makes it bit hard to work on the laptop with a fishing pole in the opposite hand.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until my 38th Birthday ๐ŸŽ‰ when the sun will be setting at 5:05 pm with dusk at 5:35 pm. Happy Birthday to Me. I am working from home so I won’t have to stay in the office or necessarily do anything special. On that day in 2020, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 35 and 19 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 54 back in 2002.

Towards the Sun

September 22, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Autumn ๐Ÿ‚! Starts at 9:30 am. Sunny and 36 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž Calm wind.

Autumn always comes and goes so quickly ๐Ÿ‚ and I don’t think this year will be a exception. But honestly November is my favorite month. I like the many shades of brown and yellow from the tamarack. I like the cold and the wood smoke.

I only had the dregs of the coffee โ˜• in the coffee container so I boiled the percolator extra long. It actually became out reasonably strong. Maybe not as strong as cold coffee that has sitting out for a couple of days but still pretty good.

So this morning I’m heading downtown ๐Ÿš for work a little bit later than usual to miss the commuter crush. I have that comfortable mask to wear ๐Ÿ˜ท and it should be a good day. I told John last night that I would come over to and continue digging through his files ๐Ÿ“‚.

Today will have areas of frost before 9am. Otherwise, sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 65 degrees at 1pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 2nd. Light north wind increasing to 10 to 15 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It became humid as the day progressed. The high last year was 87 degrees. The record high of 95 was set in 1895.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:49 pm with sun having an altitude of 47.5ยฐ from the due south horizon (-23.4ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. Same as the first day of spring. ๐Ÿธ The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:16 pm with the sun in the west (265ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (271ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:54 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:20 pm, which is one minute and 47 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the south-southwest (206ยฐ) at an altitude of 22ยฐ from the horizon, 229,801 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 7:55 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 62 degrees. Breezy, 16 mph breeze from the north-northwest. Today will have 12 hours and 8 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 50 degrees at 3am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 21st. Northwest wind 7 to 14 mph. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was humid. It got down to 66 degrees. The record low of 32 occurred back in 1963.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 76. Maximum dew point of 57 at 5pm. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 74. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 62 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 68 degrees.

I am still planning on heading up to Spectulator for four days starting Thursday before work. โ›บ I am undecided on my exact plans, I am going back and forth about whether I should bring my kayak ๐Ÿ›ถ. The problem is I’m going to need a lot of sunshine โ˜€ to keep things charged with the laptop and the sun angle is twenty degrees lower than even a few months back. Winter is coming.

Sturges Hills with Wilson Ridge Beyond

July 10, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Partly sunny with fog and 65 degrees at the Green Mountain National Forest. ๐ŸŒ Calm wind. The dew point is 62 degrees. A rather pleasant morning with a breeze on a soon to be hot old July day. Clouds might keep it cooler though.

Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Mostly sunny. โ˜€ But later on becoming cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 78 degrees at 1pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 16th. Maximum dew point of 67 at 4pm. Already seeing the clouds start to push in a bit Light southeast wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It became humid as the day progressed. The high last year was 89 degrees. The record high of 100 was set in 1936.

I have a few projects to work on today ๐Ÿ“ but I expect a fairly quiet day working from the hammock to replying to emails ๐Ÿ“ง and taking calls ๐Ÿ“ž from my hammock. The work laptop is charging using the solar power now, I’m sure there will be some kind of project come the afternoon to do. ๐Ÿ’ผ Probably at four o’clock. I do want to hit the swimming hole ๐ŸŠ later.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:58 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-1.3ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:50 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (295ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (302ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:32 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 9:05 pm, which is 29 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:51 pm. At sunset, look out for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 67 degrees. The dew point will be 67 degrees. There will be a east-southeast breeze at 15 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 8 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 14 seconds over yesterday.

I think my plan for today is to work in the Green Mountains ๐Ÿ—ป and maybe hit the swimming hole a few times and then head home after work, assuming it’s not raining too hard for unsafe driving ๐Ÿš˜. It’s been a fun week but I don’t want to camp in the pouring rain ๐Ÿ’ฆ which it looks like we are right on to get a direct hit from Tropical Storm Fay here in the Green Mountains. Plus I’m low on ice but I’ve eaten most of the pershibles.

Tonight will have showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. ๐ŸŒง Low of 65 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 7pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ East wind 15 to 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between three quarters and one inch possible. Yeah purty wet. In 2019, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 71 degrees. The record low of 48 occurred back in 1986.

I keep finding litter ๐Ÿšฏ around this campsite which I keep picking up. Some people are pigs. ๐Ÿฝ I know that when I camp, anything that doesn’t completely burnt gets packed out for recycling. โ™ป I don’t put aluminum or glass in the fire pit and while I may burn out cans to clean them of food residue, I always clean out the fire pit and remove the cans and any unburnt plastic or similar residue. I bury my poop ๐Ÿ’ฉ and I try to leave wood at the fireplace and tidy up the site before I leave. Nobody wants to see or smell your pile of poop or deal with your garbage. ๐Ÿšฎ

On this day in 1890, Wyoming is admitted to the United States as the 44th US State. Many liberals regard that as a mistake, although it has some beautiful country out in Yellowstone and lots of grass to feed cows and oil and coal. ๐Ÿ—ป And in 1962, Telstar, the world’s first communication satellite is launched. ๐Ÿ“ก

Tomorrow will have showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. ๐ŸŒง High of 78 degrees at 2pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 16th. Maximum dew point of 70 at 2pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Southwest wind around 6 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It became humid as the day progressed. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1936.

Looking ahead to Sunday, a chance of showers, then showers and thunderstorms likely after 11am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 77. Southwest wind 6 to 8 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 67 at 8am. Typical average high for the weekend is 82 degrees.

January 13, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Make Your Dream Come True Day ๐Ÿก! Take it Malvina Reynolds with your very white hair and cateye glasses ๐Ÿ‘“. Her music ๐ŸŽถ was very old ๐Ÿ‘ด and subversive and I hate vinyl siding and green grass lawns free of dandelions unless of course you have a goat ๐Ÿ chained up to a tree in the front yard. On this Monday, the 13th of January.

Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes made of ticky tacky
Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes all the same,
There’s a pink one and a green one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they’re all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

That think my dream involves more four wheelers, more fire, more livestock and guns than vinyl siding and chemical treated lawns.๐Ÿš™ And I like tin roofs as it means a lot less for the landfill every few years. ๐Ÿ’ญ The idea of surburbanite living with an SUV, a fancy pretentious looking house, weekly garbage service and grid-tied power, does absolutely nothing for me.๐Ÿšœ Probably more like a tractor supply commercial, or actually real life like the people in places like South Brookfield and Bedford County Penna live their lives.๐Ÿฎ

Mostly cloudy and 30 degrees at the Valero waiting for the local bus ๐Ÿš as I am dress up for the session day today. โ˜ There is a southeast breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Things will start to thaw out at around 9 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ It looks like the bus will be on time, and I’ll probably be in early to work, probably the first int he office. But early to rise means it’s another chance to get ahead, make a better future for mysellf.

Spent way too much time ironing shirts ๐Ÿ‘š this morning. For some reason they came out of the dryer very wrinkled. โ™’I am thinking the issue was they were a bit damp. But I ironed all the shirts I need for the week this morning and to ensure they’re good and wrinkle free, I have them hung in the bathtub ๐Ÿ› shower curtain rod so they absorb the moisture in the air in the bathroom. You have to know it’s steamy in there when the bathroom steam set off the bedroom smoke detector on my way out to the bus ๐Ÿš. Then I knocked a bunch of papers loose ๐Ÿ“„ but at least I caught the early bus in plenty of time.

Today will have patchy drizzle between noon and 3pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a high of 39 degrees at 1pm. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 1st. Spring is coming, or so I tell myself. South wind 5 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 23 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1932. 13.1 inches of snow fell back in 1964.โ„ Back when cars were real-wheel drive, and you threw them away at your friendly local landfill every 4-5 years.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:05 pm with sun having an altitude of 25.8ยฐ from the due south horizon (-45ยฐ vs. 6/21). Yeap, we have to wait for 4 pm for the golden hour to start. ๐ŸŒŸ The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:00 pm with the sun in the southwest (233ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ Not only is the golden hour great for photography ๐Ÿ“ท but it is also good for seeing a wild life. I saw a shit ton of deer bushwhacking back to my truck yesterday after the golden hour started yesterday. Went through some brambles and probably picked up ticks ๐Ÿœ but so far didn’t see any but I should have checked again.

The sunset is in the west-southwest (241ยฐ) starting at 4:41 pm and lasts for 3 minutes and 19 seconds with dusk around 5:15 pm, which is one minute and 7 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ I think the sun will be due east on the first day of spring, which if math correct is 270 degrees west. The best time to look at the stars is after 5:51 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 38 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 20 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 29 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 30 degrees at 6am. 16 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 27th. Calm wind. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 8 degrees. The record low of -24 occurred back in 1957.

Snowy weekend weekend on tap to celebrate King’s birthday. โ„ Saturday, snow. High near 34. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Sunday, a chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 28. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Typical average high for the weekend is 30 degrees.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 66 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ

But first a big snow storm on Saturday or maybe not. โ„ But we don’t know for sure but it could be a half of foot or more this weekend. ๐ŸŽฟ Maybe good skiing but I doubt I’ll get out to Madison County especially if it’s going to be pretty cold and snowy. But by then it will be only sixty odd days until calendar ๐Ÿ“… spring although that’s a pretty meaningless thing with the often variable weather of March and April. But at least with the first day of spring in 66 and 2/3rd days away trout season ๐ŸŽฃ is will be nigh.

Next Monday is Martin Luther King Day ๐Ÿ–ค when the sun will be setting at 4:52 pm with dusk at 5:23 pm. On that day in 2019, we had snow and temperatures between 21 and 0 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 30 degrees. We hit a record high of 53 back in 2006.

Trees

October 7, 2019 Night

Good evening! Nice evening laying back in the hammock. A barn owl is hooting in the distance, and I hear from crickets. The moon is obscured by the clouds but it’s still not super dark in the woods. Rain has been gone since midday ๐Ÿ•› and now the woods is fairly dry with a dropping dew point. There is a group of bow hunters ๐Ÿ™‡ a quarter mile down the road – they’re the group with the big jacked up 3/4 ton truck with the pick up camper. Far enough way that the only way I know there down there is occasionally a I hear their coon dog ๐Ÿถ howling or an occasional hoot or holler from their camp – that an I drove past their camp earlier. Coyotes are loud tonight.

Mostly cloudy and 53 degrees at the Allegheny National Forest. โ˜ There is a west-northwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 47 degrees. The skies will clear around 11 pm.

Today as expected was kind of a damp and somewhat rainy day โ˜” although the rain ended much earlier than in Albany but the first sign of any real clearing was not until around sunset. I sat out and read outside for a while but started to feel cold and damp and decided to hot tent with the book. ๐Ÿ“– I got through my second book of vacation – as I noted earlier – Andrew Revkins book on Weather. Nice picture book, sometimes adults like books with lots of graphics. Second book I’ve read on vacation. ๐Ÿ“š Very warm at times in the tent – that heater kicks out a lot of heat and with temperatures in the mid 50s I kept having to turn it off.

I drove over to Jakes Rocks for a while this afternoon to top off the batteries but ended up disconnecting the accessory batteries from the alternator when I started smelling ozone. ๐Ÿ”‹ I don’t want to accidentally fry the alternator while I’m on vacation or even just burn up a wire or a fuse. It’s fine – after today the sun will be shining and I’ll rely entirely on the solar for the accessory loads as the sun will out. โ˜€

Walking around Jakes Rocks was nice although it was rather cloudy and dark โ˜. But other than that a fine afternoon. I’ll admit today was a quiet day but my expectations were pretty low.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 42 degrees at 6am. Typical for tonight. Northwest wind 3 to 6 mph. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light drizzle by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 50 degrees. The record low of 21 occurred back in 1964.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ” with 80% illuminated. The moon will set at 1:38 am. The ๐ŸŒ• is on Saturday night with mostly clear skies. The sun will rise at 7:19 am with the first light at 6:51 am, which is one minute and 5 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 12 hours and 32 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 46 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 62 degrees at 4pm. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 10th. Northeast wind 5 to 7 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 80 was set in 2017.

I’ve decided to stay at this campsite one more day. โ›บ I just don’t feel like taking down camp with a week’s worth of gear and a tent to put away that is still a bit damp. Going to be a nice day tomorrow, so I definitely want to go hiking and park the truck somewhere to fully charge the accessory batteries. I might go to Titusville as I didn’t visit the museum last time I was there in 2012 or might just go for a walk along the reservoir, parking down at the swimming beach and maybe hiking up Rim Rock. ๐Ÿšถ

Wednesday who knows. ๐Ÿ’ญ West Virginia is still a possibility. The US 219 isn’t that far away and if I get up well before dawn and leave by eight I can probably do both Mount Davis State Park and Hoye Crest in Maryland before setting up camping in Cannan Heights. It looks as of the last time I checked the burn ban is still on but I don’t have to have a campfire. I always have the lights and the heater. And good music to listen to. I would probably stay until Sunday there and then come back through Pennsylvania and stay at the County Bridge Campground on Sunday into Columbus Day. Going to be mild and sunny the rest of the week.

Alternatively, I could drive up through Allegany State Park and camp, hike and hunt squirrel in Cattaraugus County or fish and hike in the Zoar Valley. ๐Ÿ  I’ve always wanted to check out the Eternal Flame Falls in Orchard Park – I read about it a lot now that I work with several Buffalo clients thee days. โ›ฒ Maybe the leaves are better up north in New York? ๐Ÿ‚

I could also move to somewhere farther south in the National Forest, check out Nebraska Bridge and that wildlife refuge down that way. Saturday or Sunday visit the Elk center and do the Elk Scenic Drive๐Ÿฏ along with visiting Hyner View Park which might have good color by then. I would also overnight at the County Bridge campground. Or honestly, I could stay at the same site all week. At any rate, wherever I camp that final night, I don’t want to be more than four driving ๐Ÿš˜ hours away from Albany so I can get back relatively early and have time to stop for lunch, visit some parks, take back roads and get back early enough to unpack.๐Ÿ’ผ It was too long of a drive for my sanity all the way out to Allegheny National Forest on the way it here.๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ

The damn camp lantern I bought mantles for remains real smokey with yellow flames and tons of soot ๐Ÿฎ. Not sure what the issue is. I was thinking that that the generator tube is clogged with dirt but the filter on it seems fine as does the gas pressure. I checked that I installed the proper mantles. Yeap. Everything seems fine but the inside of the lantern is filled with oily soot, the glass keeps on getting sooty and the top is dripping with soot. Fortunately I have plenty of electricity power off the truck, the lantern is just a backup in case of undervoltage and for extra light. Wouldn’t want to have it alone.

In four weeks on November 4 the sun will be setting at 5:07 pm (Standard Time),๐ŸŒ„ which is one hour, 41 minutes and 7 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 51 and 36 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 53 and 34 degrees. The record high of 76 degrees was set back in 1994.

I do really like that green Don’t Tread On Me – Live Free or Die shirt ๐Ÿ‘š I bought online. I would want to get caught dead wearing it in Albany but it’s fun here in the wilderness. I’m no fan of Donald Trump – he’s a racist moron with generally bad ideas ๐Ÿ‘บbut I do think government should be downsized and stay out of people’s business. That’s why I’m eventually thinking of moving to a state like Missouri when I own my off grid property with solar on the roof, composting for the toilet and a burn pit out back for the trash. An an AR-15 because they sound like a lot of fun to shoot.

Looking ahead, Average High is 55 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 3 weeks, Veterans Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in 5 weeks, Cyber Monday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ is in 8 weeks, First Sunday of Advent โœ๏ธ is in 8 weeks, Earliest Sunset of the Year โŒ›๏ธ is in 9 weeks and Festivus ๐Ÿ– is in 11 weeks.

At Peak Color

October 5, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 50 degrees at the Allegany National Forest. There is a south-southeast breeze at 13 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Chilly night, I’m glad I bought firewood for sure. I probably could have gathered wood but by the time I set up camp it was getting pretty dark.

Chilly night for sure. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Glad I have a fire. Regardless of where I stayed tonight I was going to be in Pennsylvania – if I had stuck to my original plan I would have camped at the County Bridge Campground but with my plans to stay in Pennsylvania multiple nights I drove all the way out to the Allegheny National Forest where I can have a campsite all to myself and not have to worry about making too much noise or smoke with my fire. โ›บ West Virginia via US 219 is still a possibility but first I’m going to wait out the rain at the Allegheny National Forest. Technically I can stay at this campsite all week, I could do that, I’m undecided. Going to take it one day at a time and make decisions come Monday. New River Gorge seems unlikely but maybe possible. I think they may have to wait until 2020 or 2021 but that’s just next year. So who knows! I could see doing my West Virginia trip in November 2020.

Tomorrow I’ll fine firewood for Sunday and Monday night. I fully expect the next two days to be fairly rainy and gray but so be it. I’ll probably pitch a tent tomorrow โ›บ so I can warm up next to the heater when it’s raining. Might go for a drive tomorrow just to top off the batteries as I’m not expecting much solar through Monday.

Today was cold enough I left the truck alternator connected all day to the accessory batteries. ๐Ÿ”‹ Didn’t smell any sulfurization and honestly the alternator dropped the voltage after several hours of driving. It never got above 55 degrees according to Big Red’s DIC. That said, I did drop the voltage low enough that the low voltage disconnect did kick in briefly so I ended up starting my truck briefly to restore the lights. ๐Ÿ’ก I thought about installing a override again to the low voltage disconnect but that never happened. I removed the switch after my last wiring project with the truck.

It’s wasn’t a bad day but it’s an awful long drive from Albany to the Allegheny National Forest. It wasn’t a bd trip except for the part through Binghamton when there was just a lot of busy traffic although it was moving. I ended up stopping both in Cobleskill and Oneonta in search of mantels for the lantern ๐Ÿฎ but ultimately I found them in Oneonta. They don’t sell them at every Walmart. In the future I’ll just have to plan ahead and order online. The lantern is still burning rather yellow – I think the generator tube in it that pressurizes the gas is clogged with dirt. I wonder if I can order the part online. I wish I had brought carburetor cleaner – I have some at home, if it continues to smoke and not burn real bright ๐Ÿ”† I’ll have to look at that. I have such problems with camping gear getting plugged with dirt – propane lines and everything else it seems. That said, ever since I used the other type of filter with the propane heater it has been quite reliable and the stove is good since I replaced the burners. I do use my equipment a lot – but happiness for me is nights in the wilderness.

Such a long drive out here. ๐Ÿš™ A swear after driving all day I start to get a bit delirious. ๐Ÿ˜œ I find my attention drifts away from driving. Fortunately in bum fuck Pennsylvania traffic is pretty light and cops ๐Ÿ‘ฎ are far between. At any rate I made it hear safely. If I had followed my original trip plan I would have cut two hours or more off today’s drive camping At County Bridge Campground, that ten dollar ๐Ÿ’ต a night primative campground outside of Troy on the way to future Interstate 99 and ultimately West Virginia. But I don’t like staying at campgrounds, especially with others around as I like having fires and listening ๐Ÿ‘‚ to music ๐ŸŽถ that oths may not care to hear.. Wilderness camping is a blessed experience for sure. It’s not only free for the site use but is free ๐Ÿ†“ in the sense of freedom. Much like my off grid property some point in the future.

Tonight will have a chance of light rain after 5am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 49 degrees at 9pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 23rd. South wind 13 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 47 degrees. The record low of 24 occurred back in 1965.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ” with 63% illuminated with the moon setting at 11:43 pm. The moon will rise at 3:15 pm. The ๐ŸŒ• is next Saturday with mostly clear skies. The sun will rise at 7:17 am with the first light at 6:49 am, which is one minute and 5 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 12 hours and 26 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 47 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of light rain before 10am, then showers after 10am. ๐ŸŒฆ High of 65 degrees at 4pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 1st. Maximum dew point of 57 at 5pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ South wind around 14 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 65 degrees. The record high of 90 was set in 1900. There was a dusting of snow in 1954.โ„

Tomorrow I probably will string up a tarp and pitch the tent in preparation of the certain rain โ˜”. Ironically it looks like West Virginia might only get clouds โ˜ and a few drops of rain rather than the soaking rain they need badly. ๐Ÿ’ฆ But the Allegheny National Forest is due for a good soaker. But if that happens I’ll have the tent set up which will keep me dry with a good book ๐Ÿ“™ to read. I got four of them out of the library on Friday. ๐Ÿ“š Even if it’s cold and pouring rain, hot tenting will be nice. As I previously said I’ll probably go for a short drive tomorrow – maybe just to Jake’s Rocks to bring up the voltage on the batteries ๐Ÿ”‹ on the truck. Not expecting a lot of solar tomorrow.

Looking forward to a quiet day in the Allegheny Wilds tomorrow with a good book. ๐Ÿ“š Life has been so busy lately and the quiet tomorrow will be good, doing a bunch of cooking ๐Ÿณ on the camp stove. Life has been so crazy lately I’m looking forward to the quiet.

In four weeks on November 2 the sun will be setting at 6:09 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 42 minutes and 2 seconds earlier then tonight. I’m not sure what to think about November although some of my favorite camping trips happened then. In 2018 on that day, we had rain and temperatures between 64 and 48 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 53 and 35 degrees. The record high of 82 degrees was set back in 1950.

Looking ahead, Northern Zone Regular Season ๐ŸฆŒ is in 2 weeks, Election Day 2019 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is a month away, Small Business Saturday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ is in 8 weeks, Repeal of Prohibition Day ๐Ÿบ is in 2 months, First Day of Winter โ˜ƒ๏ธ is in 11 weeks, 4:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 12 weeks, Winnie the Pooh Day ๐Ÿฏ is in 15 weeks and 5 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 16 weeks.

It’s almost eleven. While it’s nice sitting by the heater I should think about bed. ๐Ÿ˜ด
