Final Days of Winter ๐ŸŒจ๏ธ

Tomorrow officially starts spring on the calendar, but as usually is the case in New York State that doesn’t mean tulips and warm weather is right around the corner — though with El Nino and climate change in control I’m not convinced in a few days it won’t get real warm quickly. Remember, the record books are littered with 80 degrees over the years throughout March. No ninety degree days so far, but the climate is warming.

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž and 32 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a west breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

Up and going a little after 5 AM โ˜•๏ธ after running to Stewart’s to get more of the moo juice for my coffee. ๐Ÿ„ Carrot pancakes this morning ๐Ÿฅ•๐Ÿฅž with fresh maple syrup and blueberries that were pretty damn good. It was a beautiful morning when I went out to Stewart’s, and now I’m sitting at my desk here in my apartment looking out the window. As usual, I am going to ride to work today. A bit cool of a day, but so be it. I will wear gloves and a winter jacket if necessary. ๐Ÿšด‍โ™‚๏ธ

Today will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a high of 45 degrees at 3pm. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 17th. West wind 7 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 44 degrees. The record high of 69 was set in 2012. 8.0 inches of snow fell back in 1977.โ„

I’m hoping to talk to my neighbor about the growing pile of garbage bags ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ next to his apartment. I didn’t say anything last week, as I assumed on Saturday he’d be making a trip to the transfer station. โ™ป๏ธ I assume he doesn’t give a rats ass  ๐Ÿ€ about the landlord at this point because he’s moving out with the rent hike coming in search of greener pastures, but I don’t want rats in my apartment nor do I want the fire risk  ๐Ÿ”ฅ that piles of garbage bring. The new month-to-month agreement is pretty clear that not allowed — I had to ask for special permission to have my kayak outdoors. ๐Ÿšฃ If he doesn’t clean it up soon, I’m going to email the new landlord, and if he doesn’t take action, I’ll call the town. ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

It’s obnoxious to deal with, because I normally wouldn’t care, especially if the garbage was in cans, ๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ as sometimes it’s a while before I get it burnt up, taken to my parents trash pickup, or hauled to the transfer station, but I don’t leave it sitting out where animals can get to it. ๐Ÿฟ๏ธ Already I’ve seen some garbage strewn around. I need to get out of this dumpy apartment before it burns or I get evicted in pursuit of redevelopment of the land — but I want to buy myself whatever time I can, especially if I want to build my dream solar homestead. โณ๏ธ๐Ÿ ๏ธ That said, I won’t complain too much, as I’m kind of loud with my food processor and smoke alarm — to say nothing of cussing out the world when drop a pot on my foot, dirty and  generally obnoxious too. ๐Ÿคฌ Trust me I can be vulgar at times, sometimes even a bit downright racist.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:04 pm with sun having an altitude of 46.7° from the due south horizon (-24.2° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:29 pm with the sun in the west (264°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (270°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:06 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:33 pm, which is one minute and 10 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the southeast (136°) at an altitude of 70° from the horizon, 244,770 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:07 pm. At sunset, look out for snow showers ๐ŸŒจ and temperatures around 39 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 11 mph with gusts up to 21mph. Tomorrow will have 12 hours and 10 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 55 seconds over today.

I am coming to realize how abusive Rosa the substitute dental hygienist was on Friday.  ๐ŸฆทI am not going to pay somebody to get abused — even if my insurance covered the visit. I appreciate constructive criticism ๐Ÿชฅ and I’m thinking about getting an electric toothbrush for better cleaning, but Rosa was downright abusive. I get she had her new toy that showed how bad my teeth were in high-resolution colored pictures, but I did not deserve to be berated for a half hour about how bad my oral care is despite my attempts to each healthy ๐ŸŽ and floss regularly. ๐Ÿ˜ She scheduled with me for a follow up visit, but I am the customer so I have every right to cancel that appointment ๐Ÿ›‘ and find a hygienist who is professional.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers before 3am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 29 degrees at 6am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 24th. Northwest wind 10 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2023, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 22 degrees. The record low of -10 occurred back in 1967.

More reading and studying about building a house tonight. ๐Ÿ ๏ธ The usual of checking Zillow and Landwatch for new parcels and houses to come on them market, expanding my circle out a bit ๐Ÿ›ž looking at different acreage and locations to determine what would be the best place to live. I mean if I see a small house on acreage, I would be willing to consider it, it as it’s greener to reuse an existing structure and not develop new land, but the flip side is such a property would be likely very poorly insulated and grid-tied. ๐Ÿš๏ธPlus if at all possible, I want to avoid vinyl siding, which I despise to no end.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Maybe it’s too early to really determine for sure. Saturday, a chance of rain and snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 44. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 41. I have some other places I want to check out this weekend, plus find time for some hiking and fun, as I have to keep living while building my dream homestead. ๐Ÿƒ‍โ™‚๏ธ Typical average high for the weekend is 48 degrees. ๐ŸŒป There is hope for spring. The following weekend — Thursday evening through Easter Sunday I’m hoping to camp in the Adirondacks unless there is a shit ton of snow or rain is promised all weekend.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until April Fools Day ๐Ÿคก when the sun will be setting at 7:23 pm with dusk at 7:50 pm. On that day in 2023, we had rain and temperatures between 74 and 41 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 52 degrees. We hit a record high of 77 back in 1986.

 Tower

Going to be a nice late winter Tuesday with ample sun but the wind sticks around โ˜€

At least I have power this morning and it’s not like I’m showering in the pitch black like yesterday. The windows are open as I like the fresh air, even if it’s cold out. Plus I burnt some crap on the stove this morning and it was a smoking.

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Sunny and 34 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž There is a west breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 5 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Going to be such a nice day I plan to leave early ๐Ÿšฒ and ride in via the longer way using the Menands exit off the Mohawk Hudson Bike Trail. Mornings are dark currently with the time change but we gain back that daylight quickly. ๐Ÿ’ก Things are much brighter this morning though with the power back on. ๐Ÿ”Œ

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 59 degrees at 4pm. 15 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 14th. Northwest wind 7 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Less windy though then yesterday. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 46 degrees. The record high of 69 was set in 2012. 30.4 inches of snow fell back in 1888.โ„ That’s a lot of snow. But then again, last week if it had been colder and not an El Nino year, we probably would have gotten a ton of snow.

It was great being able to ride home, with the extra hour of sunlight. ๐ŸŒ† We’ve gained a lot of time in evening in recent weeks, but the time change โฒ really was a game changer in the evening when it comes to sunlight. If it wasn’t so dang cold and windy last night, I would have totally enjoyed an evening walk in the daylight, or maybe even going down to the park.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:06 pm with sun having an altitude of 44.3° from the due south horizon (-26.5° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 6.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:22 pm with the sun in the west (260°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (267°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:59 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 55 seconds with dusk around 7:26 pm, which is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the west (260°) at an altitude of 28° from the horizon, 228,842 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:00 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 50 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 9 mph. Tomorrow will have 11 hours and 53 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over today.

I am continuing to read, How to plan, contract, and build your own home. ๐Ÿ  I am not super interested in the section about what people want in the latest big suburbanite home, but I am quite interested in the permitting and contracting section, along with learning some of the basics of building construction. ๐Ÿ‘ท‍โ™€๏ธ While there are experts out there you can hire to swing a hammer, I want to make sure I’m getting a fair deal, ๐Ÿค that things will get signed off by town officials โœ… and that I’m able to build and live the way I want. I may have to pass up on a parcel or two that I love because I’m taking my time, โค๏ธ or pay a few months extra in rent, but I want to do what will work well for the next 20 years of my life through retirement and maybe beyond.

Tonight will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a low of 35 degrees at 3am. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 10th. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm in the evening. I can probably leave at least some of the windows open tonight. In 2023, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 33 degrees. The record low of -6 occurred back in 1885.

Today in 1933, was the first of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s fireside chats. ๐Ÿ“ป He really mastered the communication methods of the time when he was running for president. A lot of homes had radios by the thirties. It’s funny though I listen to a fair bit of audio and even radio programs these days it’s either streaming or podcasts. Radio is still good when you are in the Adirondacks though without cell phone reception ๐Ÿ“ถ but there are a fewer and fewer places like that.

Weekend will be mild but it’s sliding in the wrong direction. ๐Ÿ˜ž Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 51. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 53. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Typical average high for the weekend is 45 degrees.

Looking ahead, next Tuesday is Last Day of Winter ๐Ÿ‚ when the sun will be setting at 7:08 pm with dusk at 7:35 pm. On that day in 2023, we had partly sunny, snow showers and temperatures between 33 and 22 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 46 degrees. We hit a record high of 78 back in 2012. I’m not sad about that but I bet March is going to end colder then certainly 2012.

Campfire

After an afternoon of hiking, I returned back to camp and started a campfire before starting to cook dinner. It was pleasant winter afternoon, not too cold.

Taken on Sunday February 20, 2022 at Rensselearville State Forest.

Beautiful mid-winter’s morning ๐ŸŒž

I think it’s reasonable to say this morning feels more like spring time then winter, even if the mercury is a bit below freezing. With the sun it and calm wind it doesn’t feel that cold. Plus no snow to make things feel cold from the evaporation of the snow. Should be a great ride in and will be super nice and mild by mid-day into afternoon.

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž and 23 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. Things will start to thaw out at around 9 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Didn’t get earliest start ever โ˜• but I was up by 5:30 or 5:45 AM and got johnnycakes with lots of onions, garlic and spinach cooking up on the griddle ๐Ÿฅž and lots of coffee. Continuing to play with the derailleurs on my bike — โš™ sometimes I swear I’m just making things work with my belief that everything should be completely silent and every gear shift should be perfect. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ”งTruth is I should make an appointment with my bicycle mechanic to keep is running well. I also should rotate the front and rear tires, especially before I plan to do any mountain biking in the mud and ice.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 46 degrees at 3pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 18th. Light and variable wind. Super, I’m looking forward to March and especially April. A few nice weeks before the black flies arrive, lol. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 46 degrees. The record high of 52 was set in 1925. 14.0 inches of snow fell back in 1895.โ„

Bike’s working good enough to ride in to work, ๐Ÿšฒ despite or may in spite of the fact that I keep tinkering with the gears. Front derailleur is a bit off, because when I adjusted the “B” screw on the rear derailleur it threw off the front derailleur which I re-aligned but maybe not perfectly. Yesterday at lunch time I rode over to the Albany Rural Cemetery โšฐ in Menands. I want to explore the cemetery more at lunch time. Maybe today or maybe tomorrow.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:10 pm with sun having an altitude of 32.3° from the due south horizon (-38.6° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 9.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:37 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (243°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (250°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:18 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 5 seconds with dusk around 5:46 pm, which is one minute and 18 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:21 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 43 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 10 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 31 seconds over yesterday.

Four weeks into it, I am getting used to my new job in the suburbs. ๐Ÿฃ It’s actually a lot of fun to tidy data, and play with SQL for clever tricks. I can often tease a lot of interesting insights out of data using R Studio and the alike. Plus when I ride my bike in there is a lot of fun parks I can go to at lunch time, including the Corning Preserve and Albany Rural Cemetery. Plus there is a fair number of businesses and shops in Menands.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐Ÿ˜ด, with a low of 33 degrees at 5am. 17 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 5th. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 8 mph in the evening. In 2023, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. A very mild night, I should go out for a walk. It got down to 25 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1934.

Continued mild but more showers come the weekend. ๐ŸŒง Saturday, showers likely, mainly after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 52. Light south wind becoming southeast 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 44. Typical average high for the weekend is 35 degrees. I don’t have any big plans for the weekend, but that’s good, I’ve been so busy these days. The following weekend in President’s Day.

Looking ahead, there are 6 weeks until First Day of Spring ๐Ÿ’ฎ when the sun will be setting at 7:10 pm with dusk at 7:37 pm (Daylight Savings Time). I guess that means winter is more then halfway over, though the second half of winter can be kinder but snowier. At least not as cold as for as long, or so I tell myself. On that day in 2023, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 59 and 24 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 47 degrees. We hit a record high of 78 back in 1921.

Church Steeple

Another nice winter day ahead ๐Ÿ™‚

Riding to work this morning on this beautiful morning. But first I’ve been working on adjusting the gears to make sure they click tightly, though the chain is too loose. I need to figure out how to adjust that. Fortunately I have the internet and tools so I should have everything back to spec soon. I’ll work on adjusting it more in the morning.

Good morning! Sunny and 25 degrees at the Stewart’s. ๐ŸŒž There is a north breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is 14. Things will start to thaw out at around 11 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Should be a beautiful day for the ride in. ๐Ÿšฒ I don’t have to dress up so I can peddle my way to work. Then sit down at work and do the work thing, and go for a ride at lunch time down to the Corning Preserve. ๐Ÿž I was kind of hoping I could get in early and ride up to the Menand’s exit of the Corning Preserve Trail and not go up Erie Boulevard, but so be it.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 37 degrees at 2pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 18th. North wind 7 to 9 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 41 degrees. The record high of 55 was set in 1991. 10.8 inches of snow fell back in 1978.โ„

Still not quite enough daylight in the evening to ride home ๐ŸŒ† but with the clear skies, I should be able to get to the old train station ๐Ÿš‚ and catch the bus from there. It’s much better to go through Corning Preserve and take the pedestrain bridge then to ride over Water Street which can be busy at rush hour. ๐Ÿš˜ ๐Ÿšด‍โ™€๏ธ I think come President’s Day assuming that it’s not too cold or snowy, I’l be able to ride both ways to work.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:10 pm with sun having an altitude of 31.6° from the due south horizon (-39.2° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 9.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:34 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (242°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (249°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:15 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 6 seconds with dusk around 5:44 pm, which is one minute and 18 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:18 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 35 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 13 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 28 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 20 degrees at 6am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 23rd. North wind around 7 mph. In 2023, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 13 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1995.

Cloudy โ›… but mild this weekend. Saturday, a chance of showers after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 54. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Sunday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 46. Typical average high for the weekend is 35 degrees. The plan for this weekend is to stay in town.

Looking ahead, there are 6 weeks until Last Day of Winter ๐Ÿ‚ when the sun will be setting at 7:08 pm with dusk at 7:34 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2023, we had partly sunny, snow showers and temperatures between 33 and 22 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 46 degrees. We hit a record high of 78 back in 2012.

 Dusk

Decided to head out for a night of winter camping ๐Ÿ•

It’s such a glistening and beautiful winter day here at the State Forest. I wish I had cross country skis after mine got worn out, snapped, then chopped up burnt last winter. So much fiberglass in those skis, and they held up for 20 years, but like all things, they don’t last forever.

Good afternoon! Partly cloudy and 26 degrees at the Rensselaerville State Forest. โ›… There is a north breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The trees are still covered with snow and there is something we haven’t seen in a long time — blue skies. There is a 6 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at Wednesday around 1 pm. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

It is remarkably beautiful out today. ๐Ÿ˜€ Cold but beautiful. Yet that’s to be expected camping in the winter up in the mountains. The good news is the road is nice and solid this time for camping, so not playing in the mud or getting wet. The snow is frozen fairly solid, but also is light in fluffy. If I had skis, this would be almost ideal weather for skiing. ๐Ÿšฒ After lunch and finishing setting up camp ๐Ÿ• and gathering firewood ๐Ÿชต I plan to ride some of CCC Road and maybe go down to the OSI Parcel ๐Ÿ“ธ to look at the snow covered mountains. Then come back to camp and have a good fire. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

This afternoon will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 29 degrees at 2pm. Four degrees below normal. North wind around 11 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 33 degrees. The record high of 57 was set in 2016. 6.1 inches of snow fell back in 2004.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:11 pm with sun having an altitude of 30.8° from the due south horizon (-40.1° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 10 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:31 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (241°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (248°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:13 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 8 seconds with dusk around 5:42 pm, which is one minute and 18 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:16 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 27 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 11 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 6 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 23 seconds over yesterday.

One thing that’s nice about this time of year ๐ŸŒ† is we are definitely picking up more daylight in the evening, which makes it not as long at camp. That’s good as the nights can drag on. Going to be fairly cold but not super cold by the campfire for tonight, and I will have a nice fire.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 18 degrees at 4am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 15th. Maximum wind chill around 9 at 1am; Northwest wind 8 to 13 mph. In 2023, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 13 degrees. The record low of -13 occurred back in 1978.

Looking ahead to next weekend, the following Saturday is Clean Your Computer Day ๐Ÿงน when the sun will be setting at 5:23 pm with dusk at 5:50 pm. On that day in 2023, we had mostly cloudy, mild, rain showers and temperatures between 51 and 34 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 35 degrees. We hit a record high of 53 back in 1955.
