Just kind of a wet, damp miserable day ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

A good day for staying home, doing some reading and some cleaning. Maybe some thinking and writing about where I am currently, now that’s I’ve put my house and land search on ice, I’d say suspended it but I’m still going to keep learning, will keep my eye on Landwatch and Zillow and keep my options but I think my preferred option is now focused on early retirement.

Good afternoon! Started out as snow, turned to rain, and now looks like it’s more freezing rain and 32 degrees here in Delmar. ๐ŸŒง๏ธThere is a north breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThe skies will clear tomorrow around noontime.

I honestly thought it was just going to be a rain event locally. ๐ŸŒจ๏ธ I was wrong. It’s really much more of a mixed bag, a lot of slop locally but now I’m watching the trees ice up. They’re getting a fair bit of snow up north, but I think with the warmer temperatures next week, maybe some will be left up north prior to camping but it won’t be a major hindrance as most should melt this weekend. ๐Ÿ•๏ธ I confirmed that For the Love of Bacon is going to be open on Good Friday, so I can get bacon ๐Ÿฅ“ prior to camping. Yum. ๐Ÿ– I won’t buy store bought bacon but as an occasional treat, farm bacon is great.

This afternoon will rain or freezing rain before 3pm, then rain and sleet between 3pm and 4pm, then rain, snow, and sleet after 4pm. High of 35 degrees at 2pm. 13 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 13th. North wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime ice accumulation of 0.3 to 0.5 of an inch possible. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of less than one inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 56 degrees. The record high of 80 was set in 1938. 6.1 inches of snow fell back in 2020.โ„

Thursday knocked my derailleur badly out of alignment fighting the wind heading home, didn’t discover until Friday commute. ๐Ÿšฒ Couldn’t even get it into high. Ended up driving in on Friday but it’s fine as I brought in a better desk lamp and one of my re-potted plants. Had a root rot issue or maybe over fertilization. ๐Ÿฅ€ Wasn’t a difficult adjustment, took five minutes with a hex key but I didn’t have time on Friday to adjust. When the rain stops I’ll take for a test ride to verify. I ended up getting an inexpensive stick lamp for my desk at work ๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ because the lamp shade on the old lamp I found in the closet was falling apart. Lamp shades were close to same price, plus that old lamp I found in closet kind of was on it’s last legs. This new lamp is super bright with the 200-watt LED bulb, and the not aged-plastic on the lamp shade.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:03 pm with sun having an altitude of 48.6ยฐ from the due south horizon (-22.2ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:35 pm with the sun in the west (266ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (273ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:12 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:39 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the east (100ยฐ) at an altitude of 20ยฐ from the horizon, 252,272 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:13 pm. At sunset, look for snow and freezing rain ๐ŸŒจ and temperatures around 35 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 14 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 22 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over yesterday.

At one point I had more ambitious plans for today, ๐Ÿงน but I really should spend time cleaning in my apartment, especially the bathroom. And I want to do some reading, this time not about real estate, building a house or land. ๐Ÿ ๏ธ It was fine when I was doing it, but it became a bit overwhelming to say the least. I’m not going to stop learning, but it’s not going to be primary focus now that I’ve moved that goal into my retirement years when I can have lots of land and in live in a state that shares my values. ๐Ÿงญ I wanted to make New York work, but I just don’t see the state’s values as being consistent with my own.

This afternoon I am thinking if the library opens I’ll go down there for a while to get on the internet, ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ and maybe drop off my Early Voting Ballot to the Early Voting site. Totally voted for Dean Phillips, as I think we need new blood in government, ๐Ÿซ€ even if the 79-year old Joe Biden has nomination locked up. If I don’t get it done today, ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ I can do that tomorrow when I run to the grocery store for my weekly shop already — can you believe tomorrow is already Sunday? ๐Ÿ›’I am thinking Thursday I may take half a day off from work and head up to Adirondacks before rush hour ๐Ÿš— , although if the weather is bad, I think I’d be better off to go up early on Good Friday, maybe doing a hike in the morning. ๐Ÿ•๏ธ

Tonight will snow, mainly before 8pm. ๐ŸŒจ Low of 21 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 29th. Northwest wind around 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2023, we had light rain in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 34 degrees. The record low of 0 occurred back in 1875.

Looking ahead, there are 5 weeks until Arbor Day ๐ŸŒณ when the sun will be setting at 7:52 pm with dusk at 8:21 pm. On that day in 2023, we had partly cloudy, patches of fog and temperatures between 62 and 40 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 65 degrees. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1962.

Pretty morning today

Happy Final Friday of January 2024! โ˜”

Kind of a wet one to flush away the month of January. I’m up early walking laps on the Concourse in the Emperor’s Plaza. I was thinking if I wanted to do some cardio I could do the stairs in LOB, though truth be told I’ll be here come midday for diversity training and then I’m going to work the rest of the day in my old office.

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Heavy rain and 38 degrees at the Elm Ave Park and Ride. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ There is a southeast breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Not much snow left after the warm temperatures and the rspTemperatures will drop below freezing at Sunday around 3 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

For some reason I didn’t sleep well last night ๐Ÿ› so I’m up early walking ๐Ÿšถ the Plaza. I just find it hard to sleep with the windows closed and I need another night in the wilderness but alas it’s January for a few more days and the woods is going to be a mosh pit after all the rain of recent. ๐Ÿฝ I have diversity training today, so I’ll need to stay awake for that. And lots more reports to run. I need to figure out how to get Docker running on my work machine ๐Ÿค– to automate that further.

Breakfast this morning was pancakes ๐Ÿฅž made from carrots ๐Ÿฅ• and apples with some egg and whole wheat flour for binder with cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice and honey ๐Ÿฏ to top. Then I decided I was still hungry and wanted some protein, so I had some Greek yogurt and strawberries ๐Ÿ“ as a side. โ˜• Looking forward to more coffee when I get in the office. Last night it was pea soup ๐Ÿฅฃ with carrot bread which came out so moist and tender, reminded me almost of carrot cake. By the end of the week I think I will have eaten nearly five pounds of carrots.

Today will rain, mainly before 10am. Patchy fog after 5pm. ๐ŸŒง High of 43 degrees at 4pm. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 9th. Southeast wind 6 to 10 mph becoming northeast in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 41 degrees. The record high of 59 was set in 1950. 8.5 inches of snow fell back in 1949.โ„

Bike ride in and hike was good, ๐Ÿšฒ though on a cloudy day like yesterday it was darker than I would have preferred for riding across the Water Street Bridge. Didn’t help there was a bunch of debris from crashes on the shoulder. I should have enough time that in the future I might ride through Corning Preserve ๐Ÿž and over the pedestrian bridge as an alternative.

I’m getting used to suburban office ๐Ÿข with its acres parking ๐Ÿ…ฟ which everybody tells me is a good thing but I find it hard to believe. I just find the corporate architecture to be so soul depraving with the acres of cubicles, florescent lighting and the very square windows that are few and far between. At least I can make it work with the buses ๐Ÿš and it’s an easier bike ๐Ÿšฒ ride. I enjoyed riding in yesterday and riding down to the river at lunch time, โ˜บ It will be nice come summer. Acres of parking probably is good if I’m planning on going out of town after work.

I do think I’m doing good work, ๐Ÿ–ฅ putting my data science skills and Unix knowledge to hood work in the new position. Change is good, I think I’m rapidly getting up to skill. Plus it’s a good resume builder as I can say I’m using Unix text utilities, SQL and R processing in a o

 Woodstock Road

I have zero idea on why my new smoke detector went off at 4 am ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿš’

I thought the photo electric detectors were supposed to be more reliable with fewer false triggers. There is no smoke, no cooking or showering at that hour. But it still triggered. And now I’m triggered. That was obnoxious.

Good morning! What day is it? A Wet Day, of course. Rain and 42 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Sunday around noontime. โ˜ƒ๏ธ Maybe it makes it feel better to be back from Madison County. I bet it’s really wet at the Horse Camp this morning. ๐ŸŒง ๐Ÿ‡ It’s good to be home, I guess.

Going to need the rain coat ๐Ÿงฅ today. Catching the local bus in this morning. ๐Ÿš I was going to catch Things have been kind of a cluster this morning ever since getting up at 4 am this morning. I’ll survive this pseudo Monday regardless. ๐Ÿ’ˆ I was going to catch the earlier express bus in to walk, ๐Ÿšถ‍โ™€๏ธ but then I decided I needed to cut my hair and time was tight, and then I misplaced my headphones, ๐ŸŽง so I ended up missing even the later express. The local is running late too. ๐Ÿ•“ Isn’t that fantastic.

Black beans soup is on the stove this morning. ๐Ÿฒ That’s going to be dinner tonight. Frozen vegetables ๐Ÿฅฆ, tofu, smoked paprika and nutritional yeast is going to be lunch. Getting away from rice and lentils for lunch now as lately it’s been rough on the stomach and I’m ready for a change. ๐Ÿคฎ Last night was a stew with turkey, carrots, celery, corn and some other things, along with flour and spices to thicken it up. Pretty good meal. Lunch was frying up the last of the onions and sweet potatoes I had before going shopping. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿณ

Today will rain likely. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 47 degrees at 3pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 22nd. South wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 34 degrees. The record high of 60 was set in 1895. 15.0 inches of snow fell back in 1894.โ„

That early smoke alarm was annoying, ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿš’ not sure what triggered it — maybe the humidity as the temperature dropped in my apartment. The steam when I was taking a shower and cooking also triggered in the afternoon. I didn’t have the heat on last night as it wasn’t really cold, indeed the heated blanket actually was uncomfortable that mid-evening I turned it off. Getting up at 4 AM wasn’t so bad though as I was asleep a little after 7 PM, as I was tired after heading out camping. Skipped making bread last night ๐Ÿž as I didn’t feel like kneading and wanted to get to bed early. ๐Ÿ›Œ Despite my early rising, I think I got a decent night’s sleep.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:57 am with sun having an altitude of 24.1° from the due south horizon (-46.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:43 pm with the sun in the southwest (231°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (238°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:29 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 5:00 pm, which is 41 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waning Gibbous ๐ŸŒ– Moon in the northeast (52°) at an altitude of 0° from the horizon, 246,322 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:37 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 47 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 7 minutes of daytime, an increase of 27 seconds over today.

Tonight will rain. ๐ŸŒง Low of 43 degrees at 8pm. 22 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 14th. Light and variable wind becoming northeast around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 22 degrees. The record low of -14 occurred back in 1951.

Tonight’s plan calls for enjoying that bean soup, ๐Ÿฅฃ followed by kneading bread. ๐Ÿž I forgot to get more squash so I can’t bake that while baking bread, so I might end up doing two loaves, and freezing the other one for the weekend. It’s always nice to have fresh bread up at camp, assuming that’s what ends up happening.

NYE Weekend is rapidly sliding downhill. ๐Ÿ˜• โ˜” Kind of what you’d expect 2023 to close out like. Saturday, a chance of rain and snow showers before 7am, then a chance of rain showers between 7am and 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 41. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 40. Typical average high for the weekend is 35 degrees.

Snow Covered Top

And it’s a wet one a week out from Christmas ๐ŸŒง ๐Ÿ‘‰ ๐ŸŽ…

If it was only about 35 degrees colder, we would be blowing through the 1887 snow fall record. Though when it’s cold out the PWAT values usually drop. At any rate, it’s a pretty good soaker, with multiple inches of rain expected today. I heard a loud drip drop this morning, and I started to wonder if I had a roof leak. It actually was the rain falling on the pan of soup I had cooling outside. Maybe some rain got into soup, but hopefully most of it rolled off the top of the pan. And it was a lot cooler by the time I brought it into the fridge on my way off to work.

Good morning! Rain and 54 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a south-southeast breeze at 15 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Actually, maybe not umbrella weather. Bring your rain coat and plan to get wet. The dew point is 53 degrees. It’s pretty wet outside. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 4 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Definitely a wet morning. ๐ŸŒง No bike ride in for me this morning. I was hoping to get in early and walk lapse on the plaza concourse ๐Ÿšถ‍โ™€๏ธ but I ended up catching the later express in by the time I got done cooking ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿณ and fiddling around on social media. Something about the hemp plastic bottles ๐Ÿพ really triggered me. I’m all for sustainability but this new-age hipster stuff annoys me to no end.

Today will rain, mainly before 5pm. ๐ŸŒง The rain will continue to be rather heavy at times. Hope your windshield wipers are in good condition Temperature rising to near 57 by 10am, then falling to around 46 during the remainder of the day. Breezy, with a south wind 15 to 20 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 35 degrees. The record high of 60 was set in 1921. 17.0 inches of snow fell back in 1887.โ„

I am not complaining about how mild it is outside despite the rain. ๐Ÿ’ฆ Heat’s been off all weekend as it’s been so mild, above freezing. It will probably be back on this week. ๐Ÿ”Œ That said my December power bill was high — $90.74 or about $20 higher then it ordinarily would be mostly due to all the cooking I’ve been doing. I run the oven two or three times a week for a couple of hours cooking, with the stove top full too. But I’ve also been eating a lot healthier, and I like all that fresh bread ๐Ÿž, baked sweet potatoes ๐Ÿฅ” and squash. ๐Ÿ  I guess I can afford the higher electric and grocery bills ๐Ÿ’ธ if it means better eating and better health. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍โš•๏ธ Diabetes or cardiac arrest isn’t cheap even with insurance, so that’s a disease I want to avoid to get all possible.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:53 am with sun having an altitude of 24° from the due south horizon (-46.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:39 pm with the sun in the southwest (230°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (238°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:24 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 4:55 pm, which is 21 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the south (174°) at an altitude of 38° from the horizon, 226,341 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:32 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 46 degrees. Breezy, 18 mph breeze โ›… from the west-northwest with gusts up to 29mph. Today will have 9 hours and 6 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 17 seconds over yesterday.

Yesterday I picked up the stove burner and drip plate, โ™จ๏ธ and now the stove works excellent. Stove burner ended up costing like $35 but whatever, we live in inflationary times, and I wanted to be able to cook again with a 8 inch burner and not bother the landlord. ๐Ÿ˜ My rent is in the single digit percent of my income at this point, I don’t want to give the landlord any incentive to raise it though he usually does every 3-4 years, so it’s due for a hike next summer. ๐Ÿ”ฅ I also replaced my smoke detector which was malfunctioning even with a new battery, and got one of those photo-detector smoke detectors, which I can confirm doesn’t go off every time I cook unlike the old fashion style ones. ๐Ÿค‘ It is really great — I was doing a lot of cooking this morning but no false alarm. ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿš’ Again more money, that my landlord should be picking up, but after 16 years I’ve beat enough out of my apartment so it’s not like I’m doing him that much of a favor, but I want to keep it livable and safe — and I know the landlord would probably not spring for a photo-detector, but a cheaper ionizing detector I’d be setting off each morning at 5:30 AM when I cook. If the smoke detector is disabled, it can’t worn you in a fire.

It was fun watching the Nutcracker my niece was performing in. ๐Ÿ‘ผ ๐ŸŽ„ It is the first live performance I’ve seen since I saw one at the Egg during High School classes. Suprisingly well done, though the chairs at the SUNY PAC were a bit uncomfortable and I had to pee by the end of the show. I probably should have gone for a leg stretcher during the intermission. Then we went out to new Mexican restaurant at Slingerlands Shopping Plaza. ๐ŸŒฎ ๐ŸŒฏ Maybe not the healthiest meal ever but it was good. Always great to spend time with the family. ๐Ÿ‘ช

Tonight will have a chance of rain before 7pm, then a chance of showers after 2am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 34 degrees at 6am. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 9th. West wind 7 to 11 mph becoming south after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2022, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 27 degrees. The record low of -13 occurred back in 1973.

As it was wet and raining out, I took the bus to work but I want to walk this evening ๐Ÿƒ as yesterday I didn’t get in 10,000 steps but that’s my goal today. I will walk during lunch time, and then hopefully get out after dinner. ๐Ÿ‘ฃ I think it might be chilly tonight with e wind but I think if the rain pulls off I can bundle up and be warm. It’s winter, I’m adult, I’ll survive. Maybe my fingers will be cold, I’ll wear gloves. ๐Ÿงค

Project SCORE, the world’s first communications satellite, is launched today in 1958. ๐Ÿ›ฐ This first purpose-built communications satellite experiment consisted of 2 identical communications repeater terminals mounted in the guidance pods along the sides of the launch vehicle. The experiment was to test the feasibility and explore problems associated with, using satellites for communications purposes. No modulation was received on the carrier wave from experiment package no. 1. Voice and teletype messages were sent and returned in real-time, and also from experiment tape recorder no. 2. The tape recorder was loaded with new material 28 times and failure finally was due to battery depletion. The experiment receiver and transmitter operated on 150 and 132 MHz, respectively. ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Interesting technology, though seems so dated in the era of Starlink.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 38. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 41. Christmas Day — Monday, Partly sunny, with a high near 44. Typical average high for the weekend is 36 degrees. I am thinking of taking Friday off and maybe Thursday off. I might work from home on Wednesday, to make for a short work week, but I want to get further into the week to decide based on the forecast.

Looking ahead to Christmas, next Monday is Christmas ๐ŸŽ… when the sun will be setting at 4:28 pm with dusk at 4:59 pm. That’s when I plan to come home after my trip. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 27 and 11 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 36 degrees. We hit a record high of 66 back in 1889.
