The smoke clears as the weekend approaches but I’m in as much of as a haze ever ๐ŸŒ

Through the haze I think I can see the weekend though for a while walking yesterday I could feel my throat burning. Again the smoke alarm went off in the office from the wildfire smoke, the fire department came and switched off the alarm. I reviewed votes on calender 58B at one AM in the morning, flipped a Rules Report number got up at 5:50 am and started walking. A day in the life.

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! On a clear day you can still see the weekend. Summer is still coming despite the smoke which started to part yesterday. Mostly cloudy with some smoke and fog around 47 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒ Calm wind. The air quality index is 54. You can sort of start to breathe again this morning.

That cold cup of coffee โ˜• helps a lot as died the cold air. My throat feels a lot better this morning, it really started to burn yesterday when I was walking in the mid afternoon after the smoke had appeared to lift but the air quality levels still were around 175. ๐ŸซWalked 6 ¼ miles yesterday and 7 ½ miles yesterday which ain’t bad despite the busy schedule and noxious air. Reheating the eggs, spinach and vegetables from yesterday ๐Ÿณ. A rich source of protein and energy for the coming day.

It seems like only a day more of wearing my oversized dress pants ๐Ÿ•ด๏ธwhich apparently the pair I had saved for today seems particularly oversized. In many ways I can’t believe how much weight I have lost. Now I kind of wish I had a working scale and weighted myself before I started this journey into healthy eating ๐Ÿ. I concede probably a lot of it was the two pounds of cheese ๐Ÿง€ I was eating most weeks, which for as much as I love all things dairy ๐Ÿฎ, that’s a lot of saturated fat. I do like my new sense of taste and all interesting foods. I guess session could extend after midnight again but I don’t think I’ll be likely driving downtown to work a full day on Saturday though anything is possible. I just want things to wrap up so so I can get onto summer.

Today will have a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 11am. Some of the storms could produce small hail. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 67 degrees at 2pm. 11 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 3rd. Maximum dew point of 52 at 9am. Northwest wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 75 degrees. The record high of 100 was set in 1933.

Last night when I was working from home ๐Ÿ’ป I made up another pound of rice ๐Ÿš and lentils for the upcoming week. A mixture of red and green lentils in the rice as it was a red lentil week but I didn’t have enough. After lunch today the pound of black beans I cooked up on Sunday evening will be done. They were good especially cold with red onions. ๐Ÿง… I need to get to the store ๐Ÿ›’ soon as my fresh and frozen fruit supply has been mostly eaten at this point as I only have a single apple ๐Ÿ left in my office ๐Ÿข although I can finish off the red grapes ๐Ÿ‡ today at work. Yesterday’s dinner was the last of the rice with a thawed shrimp ๐Ÿฆ and lots of kale. But I’m even getting low on frozen kale and spinach, so you know a real crisis in the pantry is ahead.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:56 pm with sun having an altitude of 70.3° from the due south horizon (-0.5° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:50 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (296°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (303°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:32 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 26 seconds with dusk around 9:06 pm, which is 36 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:52 pm. At sunset, look out for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 63 degrees. The dew point will be 53 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 17 minutes of daytime, an increase of 49 seconds over yesterday.

In an ideal world session would wrap up fairly early today, ๐Ÿก I could get home early, take a nap ๐Ÿ˜ด and then get to Walmart around 8 pm when freshly stocked but that’s living in a fantasy world. ๐Ÿง› I think realistically the best I can do is try to get my steps ๐Ÿ‘ฃ in today, keep my eyes ๐Ÿ‘€ mostly open at work and celebrate ๐ŸŽ‰ come tomorrow when the legislative session is done if it is done before then which I concede may be unlikely.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce small hail. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 48 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 16th. North wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 53 degrees. The record low of 36 occurred back in 1975.

I double checked to make sure my stove was off ๐Ÿฒ and that the refrigerator was off and the iron unplugged before leaving home because I’m sure memory is bad at this point. ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿป‍โ™‚๏ธI’ll be glad for a more normal week next week though I have a busy one planned. Got to get my summer on. โ˜” I forgot my umbrella again but at this point I don’t care if I get a bit wet heading home.๐ŸŒง๏ธ I’ll dry out my suit jacket, probably will need to be dried cleaned by January at any rate and I’ll throw the rest in the wash. Probably going to end up getting at least some new dress shirts and pants should I keep off the weight if not loose more through the end of the year.

On this day in 1972, severe rainfall causes a dam in the Black Hills of South Dakota to burst, ๐ŸŒŠcreating a flood that kills 238 people and causes $160 million in damage. This one wasn’t blown up by the Russians. I have always been fascinated about some day maybe living in the Black Hills of South Dakota. ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ Very wooded and remote, low taxes, good gun laws. If I was a Republican I would probably vote for their Governor in the Republican presidential primary as she is pretty damn sexy and has that flame thrower on her ranch. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 74 degrees at 4pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 27th. Maximum dew point of 53 at 8am. Northwest wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 76 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 2008.

I’m hoping to do the Gas Up ๐Ÿšœ with dad on Saturday assuming that I’m not working. Then an overnight hammock camping ๐Ÿ• in the woods somewhere. I heard Stanton’s has fresh strawberries ๐Ÿ“ which might be good as a snack at camp and breakfast the next morning, especially if I don’t have time to shop in the mean time.

Looking ahead to Sunday, a slight chance of showers after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 80. โ˜€ Calm wind becoming southwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Maximum dew point of 59 at 7pm.  I might do the Gas Up again on Sunday to explore more of it and get some ice cream ๐Ÿง made with the antique churn and the Blackstone engine assuming I’m not too tired. Plus hike at Thacher Park. ๐Ÿšถ Typical average high for the weekend is 78 degrees.

Next week, I have a busy week ahead. ๐Ÿšฒ I am hoping to get some advice on my bicycle from the Albany Bicycle Rescue clinic on Tuesday, which will hopefully get me on the right track. Then come Wednesday, I need to go to the store and get my propane tank filled ๐Ÿฎ and food for the long weekend. I plan to take Friday off to head up to the Adirondacks, so I will be driving north on Thursday evening, hopefully to get the House Pond Campsite and the swimming hole. โ›บ And the Potholers Monday is Juneteenth and I’m planning to take off Tuesday, so I will probably camp somewhere different for the second half of the weekend. Maybe Stewart Landing and paddle Lily Lake ๐ŸŒผ in hope that there will still be the lilies out on the lake. They come pretty early in my experience and are a easy to miss.

Looking ahead, there are 5 weeks until National Nude Day ๐Ÿ‘ฑ when the sun will be setting at 8:33 pm with dusk at 9:06 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 85 and 65 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 84 degrees. We hit a record high of 99 back in 1995.

 Muddy at Moose River Plains

March 13, 2023 6 AM Update

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Rain showers, pitch black and 34 degrees for the morning walk. ๐ŸŒจ๏ธ There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

With the time change and the clouds this is a dark morning for the walk ๐ŸŒƒ but I was out a few minutes before the half hour of six. Listening to the Stones Paint It Black and noticing more sunlight as seven o’clock approaches. Oatmeal, cherries strawberries and bananas ๐Ÿฅฃ for breakfast. I still pancakes in my refrigerator from the other day but after a heavy Sunday dinner I wanted something lighter with more fiber.

Today will have a chance of rain and snow before 8am, then rain likely. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 40 degrees at 1pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 2nd. Southeast wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 34 degrees. The record high of 70 was set in 2012. 22 inches of snow fell back in 1993.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:06 pm with sun having an altitude of 44.4ยฐ from the due south horizon (-26.4ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 6.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:22 pm with the sun in the west (261ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ

The sunset is in the west (267ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:59 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:27 pm, which is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:00 pm. The days seem so much longer these days with the changing times.

At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 38 degrees. There will be a east breeze at 6 mph. Tomorrow will have 11 hours and 54 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over today. I’m still hoping to get my evening ๐Ÿšถ and my steps in for the day ๐Ÿ‘ฃ but I’m the first to admit that tomorrow may be challenging depending on how much snow snow we get from the DIRE EMERGENCY SNOW storm that will probably be mostly rain โ˜” but what do I care I live in the city. Either the buses will be running or I’ll be working from home.

Tonight we will have rain before 9pm, then rain and snow between 9pm and 1am, then snow after 1am. ๐ŸŒจ The snow could be heavy at times, it’s still winter. But not really cold with around 33 which is about ten degrees above normal. East wind around 7 mph becoming north after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible. I’m not thinking dire emergency but most people these days think two inches of snow qualifies as a DIRE EMERGENCY.

Today in 1991, the Justice Department announces that Exxon has agreed to pay $1 billion for the clean-up of the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. ๐Ÿ›ข Oil spills can leave kind of a mess.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 46. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 37. Typical average high for the weekend is 46 degrees.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until 8 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 7:32 pm with dusk at 8:00 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 49 and 36 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 57 degrees. We hit a record high of 86 back in 1922.

May 28, 2020 Night

Good evening! Cloudy, muggy and 73 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a south breeze at 13 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 66 degrees. The skies will clear Saturday around 11 am.

A fairly quiet day, I got my remaining camping gear put away, ๐Ÿ”ฑand spend a lot of time vacuuming up sand ๐Ÿ‘ฃI managed to track everywhere from working Wednesday at the beach ๐ŸŠ and running back to my truck ๐Ÿƒ when I needed run reports or export something from Excel.

It was kind of a hot and sticky day, โ™จ not oppressive but you definitely felt the sop when you moved around and burned some calories. The long hair ๐Ÿ’‡was particularly gross in the heat and humidity despite washing it in the morning and trimming my sideburns and goatee down to a reasonable length.

I went down to the library for a while this afternoon and worked down there ๐Ÿ’ป. I was having trouble with the internet but ultimately I moved closer to the library and swapped to a different version of the kernel driver which seemed to improve the Wi-Fi reception. ๐Ÿ“ถ The Wi-Fi has been always kind of problem with this laptop as the Linux driver has always been a bit buggy.

I went for my evening walk ๐Ÿšถ and eat the remaining pasta ๐Ÿฒ I made for lunch. Caught up on the YouTube videos ๐Ÿ“น that I downloaded earlier in the day. I haven’t followed the usual YouTube stuff as closely as I’d rather sit out back then watching videos. Plus in the spring, how many hours of video do you really want to watch of people hauling manure. ๐Ÿ’ฉ A lot of that in spring time on the YouTube. I also was having issues with my YouTube download script I had to fix.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly between midnight and 4am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 68 degrees at 4am. 17 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 66 at 10pm. South wind 10 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2019, we had mist in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 49 degrees. The record low of 34 occurred back in 1956.

Tonight will have a First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon with 39% illuminated. At 10 PM, the moon was in the west-southwest (258ยฐ) at an altitude of 38ยฐ from the horizon, some 229,937 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by November 19th. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ The Strawberry ๐Ÿ“ Moon is on Friday, June 5. The darkest hour is at 12:54 am, followed by dawn at 4:49 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:23 am in the east-northeast (59ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 22 seconds. Sunrise is 37 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:05 am with sun in the east-northeast (66ยฐ). Tonight will have 8 hours and 57 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 26 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 11am. Some of the storms could produce small hail, gusty winds, and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 85 degrees at 3pm. 12 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 69 at 1pm. South wind 9 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had rain in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 64 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1931.

In four weeks on June 25 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (303ยฐ) at 8:37 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 13 minutes and 43 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had rain and temperatures between 86 and 68 degrees. Around the latest sunset of the year, already moving a bit further west and less north as winter approaches again. Typically, you have temperatures between 80 and 59 degrees. The record high of 95 degrees was set back in 1898.

Black River

April 30, 2020 Night

Good evening! Rain and 55 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” Breezy, ๏ธ17 mph breeze from the south-southeast ๐ŸŒฌ with gusts up to 30 mph ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ. The dew point is 50 degrees.

The Lyme Disease round 2 is no joke and I’m going to call the doctor on the morning ๐Ÿ˜ท and figure out this telemedicine thing. I wanted to wait for the bulls eye but I’m so achy and sore and pulled that big gorged tick on Tuesday. ๐Ÿœ I guess round 2 of Lyme hits a lot harder. I didn’t even think about my evening walk. I just hope come morning I won’t be too stiff and sore to climb the stairs. I’m sure once I get on doxycline I’ll be fine ๐Ÿ’Š but this is pretty awful.

I’d like to get up to the Adirondacks this weekend for some social distancing โ›บ but with the Lyme disease and the mud and particularly the rain that is going to last through Friday night I don’t see it happening. Going to be a nice weekend so I’ll have to figure out what I can do closer to home. Weather is only going to improve as summer approaches and once I make up my mind on the screen house for camping I’ll have a black fly free zone for enjoying a long weekend camping.

Tonight will rain. The rain could be heavy at times. ๐ŸŒง Low of 53 degrees at 6am. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 30th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 4am. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Southeast wind 11 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 42 degrees. The record low of 28 occurred back in 2008.

Tonight will have a First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon with 54% illuminated. At 9 PM, the moon was in the southwest (225ยฐ) at an altitude of 61ยฐ from the horizon, some 230,996 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by October 22nd. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ The Flower ๐ŸŒท Moon is on Thursday, May 7. The darkest hour is at 12:53 am, followed by dawn at 5:21 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:52 am in the east-northeast (69ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 6 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 22 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:31 am with sun in the east-northeast (75ยฐ). Tonight will have 9 hours and 54 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 30 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will rain before 10am, then a chance of showers between 10am and 3pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3pm. ๐ŸŒฆ High of 63 degrees at 3pm. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 29th. Maximum dew point of 54 at 1pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Southeast wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 56 degrees. The record high of 86 was set in 2001. There was a dusting of snow in 1978.โ„

In four weeks on May 28 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (301ยฐ) at 8:23 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 28 minutes and 47 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had rain showers, mostly cloudy and temperatures between 57 and 50 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 73 and 51 degrees. The record high of 93 degrees was set back in 2016.

Looking ahead, Flower Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 1 week.

Hunter Mountain Fire Tower

June 1, 2019 Evening

Good evening! Clearing a bit with rain showers and a few rumbles of thunder around and 74 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a south breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 58 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 9 pm. A few fireflies around. Not a lot, they’ve been tardy with the cold spring. ๐Ÿ

We had some heavy rain for a while. I got caught out walking in the rain. โ˜” But now it has stopped and I’m sitting out back. ๐ŸšถI bought some milk and ice cream and are now sitting out back as the rain has stopped. ๐ŸจHappy Dairy Month! ๐Ÿฎ It wasn’t that bad of a day but pretty busy. Lot of little things to get done.

Tonight will be scattered showers and thunderstorms before 2am, then isolated showers between 2am and 5am. Patchy fog after 5am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 61 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around July 3rd. Maximum dew point of 60 at 10pm. South wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2018, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 60 degrees. The record low of 39 occurred back in 1971.

Tonight will have a New Moon. The Strawberry Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Sunday, June 16th. The sun will rise at 5:19 am with the first light at 4:45 am, which is 28 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 8 hours and 52 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 14 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be scattered showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 1pm. Some of the storms could produce small hail and gusty winds. ๐ŸŒฆ High of 77 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 10th. Maximum dew point of 61 at 12pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ South wind 8 to 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 78 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 1895.

I accomplished everything I planned on doing today which was good. ๐Ÿ‘ The big thing was buying the battery ๐Ÿ”‹ and getting that hooked up, so I’ve doubled my storage for camping. The solar works well on the truck except during long cloudy periods and I’m producing enough power to really float the batteries relatively quickly. It was easy enough to tap into the bus bar although I had to exchange the first battery I got because I got the wrong size and when you get batteries to run in parallel you want the same size so they charge properly. But I got that battery returned and ended up having to go to Glenmont Walmart for the battery as only one in Albany was over a year old. The Glenmont store had a battery dated 6/19 so it must be pretty new. Granted a few things about set up isn’t perfect but I plan to experiment and with costs under $120 it’s not the end of the world. I’m continuing to learn a lot.

It was a nice walk ๐Ÿšถ today at the Albany Pine Bush Preserve with lots of lupine around. It really was fields of purple. I didn’t spend a lot of time hiking there but enough to enjoy it. Didn’t see any Karner Blues unlike I did a few weeks back but I was hiking in a different location. ๐ŸŒฒ

I tried warranting the hammock but because the rip wasn’t at seem they wouldn’t exchange it. The hammocks aren’t expensive so I’m going to try to get one online somewhere. They are a lot of fun and for under $50 are worth it. ๐Ÿ˜ That said, it won’t be an LL Bean hammock as I don’t use that credit card ๐Ÿ’ณ anymore in favor of the cash back card I have with my bank. I don’t mind that much, that LL Bean hammock was shitty from the day I got it and with my rewards card only spent $4 and the hammock straps are still good.

Hooked up the outside temperature probe for my display, ๐Ÿ“ˆ and used thin wires to sneak it out past the window screen so I can keep it hooked up with the windows closed. Unfortunately I can’t test it because I don’t have the necessary libraries to make it work. I’ll have to download them tomorrow. In the process I accidentally disconnected a wire and things stopped working but they are good now. It will be interesting to monitor the outside temperature especially as cooler weather approaches come the autumn.

Tomorrow I’m planning on going to over John Wolcott’s house ๐Ÿก to keep going through his files. ๐Ÿ“‚ I found some interesting documents from the Erastus Corning Era. Then I’ll head over to my parents house for Sunday evening dinner. ๐Ÿ—

In four weeks on June 29 the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 10 minutes and 29 seconds later then today. In 2018 on that day, we had hot, mostly sunny, shallow fog and temperatures between 89 and 62 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 81 and 60 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1944.

Looking ahead, Average High is 80 ๐Ÿ– is in 3 weeks, July ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿฟ is a month away, Hottest Time of the Year ๐Ÿ˜… is in 6 weeks, Ugly Truck Day ๐Ÿšš is in 7 weeks, August ๐ŸŒป is in 2 months, Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ is in 12 weeks, Sunset Before 7:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 3 months, Average High 70 ๐ŸŽ‘ is in 16 weeks and October ๐Ÿ›ฅ is in 4 months.

Looking Up at the Clouds

I Guess Columbus Day Weekend Isn’t a Complete Washout ๐ŸŒง ๐Ÿค›๐Ÿป โ›ต ๐Ÿ‚

Totally bummed out about this weekend, but maybe I shouldn’t be. It didn’t rain until quite late into the night and this morning the rain has slackened up quite a bit. Maybe it will be nice enough to go for a bike ride to Voorheesville or Five Rivers — and it might be pretty to check out the Pine Hollow Arboretum which amazingly enough I’ve never been there. Almost rain free-enough to make me wish I had headed out of town to get camping. Maybe tomorrow but it’s likely going to be cold and windy, and probably still damp. We’ll see come the morning, I got to start working on packing and thinking about West Virginia sooner rather then later.

Good morning! Happy Saturday on this rather Rainy Start to Columbus Day Weekend! Rain showers, at least a few drops of rain here and there and 65 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 63 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 10 am.

I slept in until 5:50 AM when my alarm went off โฐ got up and make oatmeal-banana pancakes to start off my morning. ๐Ÿ˜ต Lots of coffee โ˜• so I waited a while before heading out in case I had to piss up a storm, and ended up deciding bicycling was a safer option lest I needed to pee ๐Ÿšฝ or the sky opened up with rain. โ˜”

Today will have showers and possibly a thunderstorm. โ›ˆ Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Temperature falling to around 57 by 5pm. Southeast wind 7 to 9 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 2 and 3 inches possible. Yeah, even though it’s not raining right now, I’m glad I’m not camping in that kind of crap. That’s a lot of rain. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 71 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1963.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:44 pm with sun having an altitude of 42° from the due south horizon (-28.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 6.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 5:51 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (257°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (263°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:28 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 56 seconds with dusk around 6:55 pm, which is one minute and 43 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 7:29 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 56 degrees. The dew point will be 54 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 11 mph. Tomorrow will have 11 hours and 27 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over today.

Tonight will have showers, mainly before 1am. ๐ŸŒง Low of 47 degrees at 5am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 3rd. Northwest wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had partly cloudy skies. It got down to 38 degrees. The record low of 21 occurred back in 1964.

For tomorrow, Sunday, things may improve. โ›… A slight chance of showers before 8am, then a slight chance of showers after noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 59. Southwest wind 8 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. That wind will make it cool but maybe I should plan to do some biking and camping out of town. ๐Ÿ• I heard there is some pretty good color in the Catskills. And for Columbus Day, cool but mostly sunny, with a high near 59. South wind around 9 mph. That does seem like an improvement over earlier forecasts. ๐Ÿ˜€ My parents are out of town this weekend, so I won’t be visiting them this weekend, so I am kind of free to do whatever I want this weekend both days and I don’t have to rush home. I have enough clothes for the upcoming week for work, as it’s going to be cool and I wore t-shirt and shorts all last week, including the day I was off. ๐Ÿ‘– I will have to go to the laundromat later in the week though before I head down to West Virginia. Assuming that’s where I end up — if it looks truly cold and wet for the following week I could change my plans to be closer to home, but regardless I plan to camp for the full week. ๐Ÿคท‍โ™‚๏ธ

I am watching the forecast for both here in Delmar, Wellsboro Penna and Thomas WV, ๐ŸŒง and I’m not pleased with how much rain I’m seeing, though 7 days out it really is just a crap shoot. The rain numbers are quite meaningless at this point as so much could change. If it rains on my drive down to WV it’s not the end of the world, I don’t need to take a million different side trips. I’ll skip the Pine Creek Rail Trail ๐Ÿš‚ and the C-O Canal Trail ๐Ÿšฒ until later in the week or not at all, and mostly just drive down, and hunker down at camp. ๐Ÿš˜ Once I’m in West Virginia once camp’s set up the rain is less of an issue. Indeed, the 8-14 day outlook suggests especially in West Virginia in the mid-Atlantic states it might be a fairly dry week but cool. ๐Ÿ˜Ž I’ll take that as long as there isn’t snow. โ„๏ธ

I will be bringing my heater, and can hot tent if it’s really cold up in Canaan Heights but I want to have sunny days for hiking and bicycling, plus it makes the scenery better. โ™จ๏ธ โ›บ I hear they’re getting their first likely frost in the high country this weekend, so by next weekend it should still be close to peak color, without the crowds of Columbus Day Weekend. ๐Ÿ‘ช There is a reason I waited to later this year, plus it seems like autumn is occurring each year a bit later — and the High Country of West Virginia is more like the Hilltowns climate-wise then the mountains of New York due to the more southerly location.

I found my West Virginia maps including the Monongahela National Forest ๐Ÿ—บ along with the Pine Creek Rail Trail and several other Pennsylvania State Parks I may want to visit on the way down assuming it’s not raining. I am going to print up at work a few small scale maps of Canaan Heights and some other trails in the Otter Creek and Dolly Sods Wilderness at work, ๐Ÿ–จ assuming I can find a printer that still works in the office, lol. ๐Ÿคฃ No-ones going to care if I print up like four pages, assuming that the machine still works as nobody prints much anymore work-related. Then it’s just clothes and supplies to pack for camping. I will bring a fair amount of food with me, but only one cooler as it will be cool enough that most fruits and vegetables don’t need cooling, and I don’t eat nearly as much meat and dairy as I once did. ๐Ÿฅฉ ๐Ÿฅ› I’m not a vegetarian but healthier, whole foods that are low on saturated fats really don’t need as much refrigeration.

The past few days I’ve been getting a ton of blog traffic ๐Ÿ—บ ๐Ÿค– I think with people looking for places to camp and hike for the Columbus Day Weekend. One day I pulled in over $10 in ad revenue, and I’m in the low-$30s of what I’ve pulled in over the past week and a half of running ads. I think I will be close to $70 by the end of month, and while I won’t get paid until I rack up $100 in revenue, I think by December 1st I’ll probably be getting my first check ๐Ÿ’ฐ which could easily be above $130 by my own estimates, though it depends how much demand drops for my blog as the winter season approaches. โ˜ƒ Traffic usually drops fairly low in December and January. Maybe I need to do more maps relating to skiing and snowmobiling or winter camping locations. ๐Ÿ• But it will pick up again come April and May, having looked at my old web logs. It’s good because the $540 check to the web host goes out tomorrow for the next three years. Hopefully, within a year I’ll made enough from blog ads to be made whole, all while enjoying telling my story.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Daylight Savings Time Ends ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 5:46 pm with dusk at 6:14 pm. On that day in 2022, we had sunny, warm and temperatures between 71 and 46 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 54 degrees. We hit a record high of 76 back in 1994.

Catskills

You can just sit there a-thinking on your velvet throne ๐Ÿ’บ

My bed certainly isn’t velvet but in the darkness of the morning feels like it. Some DONOVAN to start out the Tuesday morning it would seem, though not only are the evenings getting darker so are the mornings as autumn approaches in a little over a month. September 23rd at two AM starts autumn. Autumn happens ๐Ÿ‚early on a Saturday.

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Partly cloudy and 56 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… There is a north-northwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 53 degrees. Not the brightest of the mornings, in part due to the clouds. That said with the sun rising now it’s getting brighter ๐Ÿ”† out.

Got bananas ๐ŸŒ at the store yesterday along with frozen fruit and sugar free maple ๐Ÿ syrup so I’m thinking it would be a good morning for pancakes ๐Ÿฅž. Yesterday was eggs and the day before cream of wheat with Greek yogurt and lemon ๐Ÿ‹. It’s good to keep breakfast interesting.

I forgot to put the red kidney beans on the stove ๐Ÿฒ before walking ๐Ÿšถ this morning but they can soak and they’ll cook quicker this evening. With the days growing shorter in the evening it’s not like I have that much time in the evening to ride or hike before it’s dark out.

Today will be partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 78 degrees at 4pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 5th. Maximum dew point of 55 at 10am. North wind 6 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. It was sticky. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1916.

Going to ride to work again. ๐Ÿšฒ Fixed that missing bolt ๐Ÿ”ฉ on Blackie ๐Ÿšต rack, turned out all of the braze on bolts are standard M5 Allen bolts and I found a matching one from my old bike. It was nice, I didn’t have to go to the hardware store, got rid of annoying rattle and let me ride to the store and get a lot of groceries. I can’t believe I spent another $60 but I should be good for the week now. Really had that rack and basket loaded down heavy and took it easy over the bumps but I didn’t have any issues.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:59 pm with sun having an altitude of 59.2° from the due south horizon (-11.6° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:10 pm with the sun in the west (281°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (287°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:49 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 2 seconds with dusk around 8:16 pm, which is one minute and 35 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the southwest (221°) at an altitude of 19° from the horizon, 240,454 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:55 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 73 degrees. The dew point will be 54 degrees. There will be a north-northeast breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 40 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 40 seconds over yesterday.

Last night I went down to the Normans Kill Preserve briefly ๐Ÿž before going to Hannaford to go shopping. I was originally thinking of going to the hardware store and/or shopping on the way home from work on my bicycle, but then when I figured out I could fix my bike without visiting at the hardware store, ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ”ง I figured I would just to go to Hannaford after spending some time at the preserve. There was a few blackberries left down at the preserve, but we are starting to get beyond that part of the year.

That was quite the grocery haul ๐Ÿ›’ I had riding in the back of Blackie on my way back from Hannaford. I had to use the bungee cord to keep the load tied down. I had a big bag of onions, sweet peppers, a pineapple, frozen fruit, peaches, beans, yogurt, cottage cheese, spinach, edamame and several other things I can’t remember all tied down. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿฅœ Made for a heavy ride, and I was a bit worried about how the basket would hold up over the bumps, but there was no problem.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 54 degrees at 6am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 12th. Maximum dew point of 55 at 8pm. North wind around 6 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became thunderstorm by the early hours of the morning. It was sticky. It got down to 68 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1988.

Not sure what the plans for this evening, ๐ŸŒ† but gets difficult as the evening are rather dark early, so I probably don’t have time for a ride to Voorheesville. I could do a ride out to Five Rivers if I had a quick dinner, ๐Ÿฆ but I also want to have time to cook up those light red kidney beans so later in the week they can be either a snack or a meal with maple syrup or maybe cooked with eggs. I also want to hard boil some eggs for a quick go to for protein ๐Ÿฅš in the morning or even for the dinner. Wednesday I’ll also ride to work, but come Thursday and Friday ๐ŸšŒ it looks like it will be back to busing it to work, as it will rain. But both days I expect to be able to the take express on in.

Today in 1971, twenty of the Camden 28 were arrested. They were a group of “Catholic left” anti-Vietnam War activists who in 1971 planned and executed a raid on a Camden, New Jersey draft board. ๐Ÿคœ The raid resulted in a high-profile criminal trial of the activists that was seen by many as a referendum on the Vietnam War and as an example of successful use of jury nullification.

Cool almost autumn like weekend ahead. ๐Ÿ Saturday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 74. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 64 at 10am. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 73. Maximum dew point of 57 at 11am. Typical average high for the weekend is 81 degrees. Saturday is looking less wet, I’ll have to see which day my parents want to do the clam bake. ๐Ÿฆช

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now will be the concluding day of calendar summer ๐Ÿ‚ when the sun will be setting at 6:54 pm with dusk at 7:21 pm. Days by then are much shorter, kiddos back in school ๐Ÿšธ . The air will have the pungently sweet smell of corn silage as they’ll be chopping soon. The boys of fall.
