January 16, 2023 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 29 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 11 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Don’t be sad ๐Ÿ˜” that it’s over, remember the good times. I really enjoyed the rural landscape of Madison County and getting away. ๐Ÿšœ There is something so charming about the deep rural. I wish I could live there. Maybe someday but not in New York State. I guess money isn’t a big deal as I think but I’m not sure how I would make ends meet in a place like Madison County. ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐ŸŒพ I’m sure there are many other places like it only without the silliness of our wonderful state. I just love all the browns and earthy colors this time of year, the smells of the earth, silage, manure and wood smoke. ๐Ÿฎ

It really turned out to be a wonderful trip. ๐Ÿ—ป Today finally had bright blue skies and the snow ๐ŸŒจ and ice on the trees was amazing. Too bad my camera ๐Ÿ“ธ battery was dead and I had to use my cellphone ๐Ÿ“ฑ as they’ve cleared the top of Tassell Hill and there are great views of the Mohawk Valley and Adirondacks now. Such an amazing weekend. Cold โ„ at times but not unexpected for December. Maybe I should have hot tented but I was fine under the covers in my truck.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 19 degrees at 6am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 19th. Maximum wind chill around 17 at 2am; Northwest wind 6 to 9 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 28 degrees. The record low of -23 occurred back in 1971.

Tonight will have a Waining Crescent ๐ŸŒ˜ Moon with 27% illuminated. The Snow โ„ Moon is on Wednesday, February 1. The darkest hour is at 12:06 am, followed by dawn at 6:52 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:23 am in the east-southeast (118ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 18 seconds. Sunrise is 29 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 8:07 am with sun in the southeast (126ยฐ). Tonight will have 14 hours and 30 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 43 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of freezing rain between 11am and noon, then a chance of rain. Increasing clouds ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 36 degrees at 2pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 14th. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had light freezing rain in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 36 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1889. 10.9 inches of snow fell back in 1994.โ„

In four weeks on February 13 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (253ยฐ) at 5:25 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 35 minutes and 58 seconds later then tonight. In 2021 on that day, we had cold, mostly cloudy and temperatures between 21 and 5 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 35 and 17 degrees. The record high of 58 degrees was set back in 1900.

Looking ahead, tommorow is , National Cheese Lovers Day ๐Ÿง€ is Next Monday, Save the Pine Bush Turns 43 ๐Ÿฆ‹ is in 3 weeks, Presidents Day ๐Ÿ‘ด is in 5 weeks, 8 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† is in 12 weeks, Average High is 60 ๐ŸŒท is in 3 months, May ๐Ÿ•Š is in 15 weeks, 8:30 PM Sunset ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 20 weeks, Average High is 80 ๐Ÿ– is in 22 weeks, Last Sunset After 8:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 6 months, World Mosquito Day ๐Ÿž is in 31 weeks, Labor Day ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ is in 33 weeks, September 11th ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in 34 weeks, 7 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 35 weeks, Average Night Below Freezing ๐ŸŒŒ is in 43 weeks, Cyber Monday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ is in 45 weeks, First Sunday of Advent โœ๏ธ is in 46 weeks, Tea Party Day ๐Ÿ is in 11 months, Bake Cookies Day ๐Ÿช is in 48 weeks and Christmas ๐ŸŽ… is in 49 weeks.

January 16, 2023 Morning

Good morning! Happy Martin Luther King Jr Day! ๐Ÿ‘‘ I think his birthday ๐ŸŽ‚ was yesterday, so a happy belated birthday to him. Now when do we get a holiday to celebrate the life of Fred Hampton?

Mostly sunny and 15 degrees at the Moscow Hill Camping Area. โ˜€ There is a north breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Cold start to the morning but it’s warming up fast especially as the sun gets above the hills and into the holler. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Cold enough this morning I started Big Red ๐Ÿ›ป for a while to be safe and ensure the battery ๐Ÿ”‹ would be good by the time to leave. I don’t like idling my truck too much while camping due to oil consumption from idling and the famous 5.3 lifter tick but I didn’t want a dead starting battery either in the cold. She started right up though. It was in the single digits last night. I was a bit concerned as it appeared some voltage was bleeding through the relay last night to the accessory battery from the staring battery when I was idling the truck, not sure what that was about, but it didn’t cause any issues. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

M. L. King Day will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 32 degrees at 2pm. Typical for M.L.King Day. It’s the coldest week of winter on average though not this year. LA Nina and global warming from rednecks like me who drive big jacked up trucks and burn too much plastic. Northwest wind 6 to 11 mph. A year ago, we had light freezing rain in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 37 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1995. 15.1 inches of snow fell back in 1945.โ„

Today I’m going to take down camp and maybe hike back to Tassell Hill from Chittenden Pond. โ›ฐ It’s the highest point in Oneida County and I’ve never been there before. Might also hike around Brookfield Creek loop and or Glimmerglass though I’ve done the later a few times. Then I want to head home relatively early and take a shower ๐Ÿšฟ and wash the salt and sand off Big Red ๐Ÿ›ป and get ready for a regular session work day on Tuesday.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:12 pm with sun having an altitude of 26.2ยฐ from the due south horizon (-44.4ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:10 pm with the sun in the southwest (234ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (242ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:54 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 19 seconds with dusk around 5:24 pm, which is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:00 pm. At sunset, look for sunny skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 30 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 28 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 40 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 19 degrees at 12am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 19th. Maximum wind chill around 20 at 5am; Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 28 degrees. The record low of -23 occurred back in 1971.

Yesterday I hiked about 12 miles around Charles Baker State Forest ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒณ checking out some of the more remote campsites, deep back country horse ๐Ÿด trails, Lost Pond, Evergreen Pond Lean To, Quaker Cemetery ๐Ÿชฆ and the Old Little Red School ๐Ÿซ House, a one room school house that’s now somebody’s residence. I was surprised ๐Ÿคจ I ran into more people than I expected in the woods.

While not currently a state holiday, next Monday is National Cheese Lovers Day ๐Ÿง€ when the sun will be setting at 5:04 pm with dusk at 5:33 pm. Nobody can be opposed to that. Plus soon I won’t be walking home from work in the dark. ๐Ÿ”ฆ On that day in 2022, we had mostly sunny skies, a few snow showers and temperatures between 24 and 11 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1906.

June 20, 2021 Evening

Good evening! Partly clear and 82 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 62 degrees. Back home again, as John Denver once sung. ๐ŸŽถ Remarkably hot, especially now that I am back home after having a nice Sunday dinner at the folks house. ๐Ÿ‘• Slowly unpacking my gear from camping, taking steps to drink and cool down.

Well, happy summer folks. โ˜บ The next ten weeks through Labor Day Weekend are considered real summer when the state parks pools are open and the days are relatively long. ๐Ÿ– Nice hot summer days to spend at the pool or swimming hole. ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿป‍โ™‚๏ธ Do some fishing ๐ŸŽฃ late into the night.

It was a beautiful trip back across the Mohawk Valley and through the Schoharie Valley. Everything was very green and lush.  It was a nice weekend up north, although Friday night was very wet. โ˜” It drizzled for a while and then when I went for a good walk up to the Potholers it poured and I got completely soaked. ๐Ÿ’ฆ It was decent all three days up north although I have to say that today was the best of the week. That said, much too short. ๐Ÿ‡ Time flies, especially when it’s rare that I am not out of town for four or more nights, in the era of remote work. But I decided I should come home tonight, because I need to at minimum move to a new campsite.

It was three nights up in the wilderness, ๐Ÿ• camping up at House Pond, spending much of Friday during the day drinking, ๐Ÿบ reading, ๐Ÿ“• writing, โœ and hanging down at the Swimming Hole by the House Pond Campsite. ๐ŸŠ‍โ™€๏ธ It was nice but the water was a bit cold to say the least. ๐Ÿ›ถ Saturday, was kayaking from Stewart Landing up to Lily Lake. I didn’t go much into West Lake because I wanted to be close to back to Stewart Landing by 2 pm as they were threatening severe storms by afternoon, which never materialized. Instead, I spent the evening reading, and then down at the same swimming hole on the East Canada Creek. ๐ŸŠ‍โ™€๏ธ Most of Sunday was spent slowly taking down camp after a nice breakfast ๐Ÿฅž then the majority of the day the Potholers. I forgot how much nicer the Potholers are with the flowing water and potholes compared to any ordinary swimming hole on a nice summer day. It’s good to be back there!

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 69 degrees at 5am. 10 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 66 at 3am. South wind around 8 mph. Probably need the fan on all evening. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 69 degrees. The record low of 41 occurred back in 1970.

I thought about staying over the folks house, ๐Ÿ‘ช but I was tired and wanted to get home. It has been a nice weekend, but alas I should get ready for the work week and get my camping gear put away. I also want to get the volt meter out before dark, and try to figure out why the relay isn’t closing between the starting and accessory batteries when the engine is on or the solar is outputting enough to top off both batteries. ๐Ÿ”‹ That was annoying that wasn’t working this weekend.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon with 81% illuminated. At 7 PM, the moon was in the southeast (139°) at an altitude of 26° from the horizon, some 226,818 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by December 9th. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ The Strawberry ๐Ÿ“ Moon is on Thursday, June 24. The darkest hour is at 12:58 am, followed by dawn at 4:43 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:18 am in the east-northeast (57°) and last for 3 minutes and 28 seconds. Sunrise is 11 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:01 am with sun in the east-northeast (64°). Tonight will have 8 hours and 41 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 4pm. Some of the storms could produce small hail, gusty winds, and heavy rain. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 89 degrees at 3pm. Eight degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 71 at 11am. South wind 10 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 92 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1938.

Friday turned out to be a very late start heading north. ๐Ÿš I decided not to drive downtown as I’m out of practice with parallel parking and I hate dealing with rush hour traffic. ๐Ÿš™ So I took the bus home and packed the coolers but ended up having to run to the grocery store to get all the things I didn’t previously pack. But at least the nights are long, and I had plenty of time to get set up, gather some firewood ๐Ÿ”ฅ and get things going.

The relay that connects the alternator – starting battery ๐Ÿ”‹ to the accessory batteries quit working on the way up to camp. Not sure if it’s the exciter wire that broke or the relay is seized. It was fine, I had lots of sun โ˜€ for the solar so all was good. I stopped on Friday to try to get figure out the issue but nothing obvious. I’ll test this evening or tomorrow with the volt meter. โšก It’s possible that the big old can relay failed from the occasional clatter of the relay when clouds appear on a sunny day, although I think I have mostly arrested that by adjusting settings on the voltage control. I am betting the wire is just broken.

In four weeks on July 18 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (300°) at 8:29 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 7 minutes and 24 seconds earlier then today. In 2020 on that day, we had hot and sunny weather with shallow fog in the morning and temperatures between 87 and 59 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 84 and 63 degrees. The record high of 100 degrees was set back in 1953.

By then, I hope to be on my summer vacation. ๐Ÿ˜Ž I am thinking the Finger Lakes National Forest and the state parks circuit I normally do, finding new places to hike or explore. I kind of like that campsite I stayed at last year without cell service, because I find do a lot more reading and thinking if I’m camping somewhere without cell service, ๐Ÿคซ the quiet with no Facebook quite nice. ๐Ÿ“ฑ I admit I am a bit of social media addict, even if my own postings to social media are a bit more asinine as I hate all the creepy commercial advertising that follows you around the internet, especially the green schemes.

Looking ahead, Independence Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is Next Sunday, World Population Day ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ‘ง‍๐Ÿ‘ง is in 3 weeks, Ugly Truck Day ๐Ÿšš is a month away, August ๐ŸŒป is in 6 weeks, Buck Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 9 weeks, Halloween ๐ŸŽƒ is in 19 weeks, Average High is 50 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 21 weeks, Regular Deer Season in Southern Zone ๐ŸฆŒ is in 5 months, Repeal of Prohibition Day ๐Ÿบ is in 24 weeks, Cold Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 26 weeks and Boxing Day ๐ŸฅŠ is in 27 weeks.

 Yesterday On Lake Pleasant

June 1, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Suddenly it’s June ๐Ÿฎ ! Dairy month with all those cows eating delicious first cut hay and corn silage popping up out of ground, ๐ŸŒฑ Gay Pride month so hang your flag, ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ and Black Lives Matter month. โœŠ๐Ÿพ Next Tuesday is 8:30 PM Sunset. ๐ŸŒ‡ Mostly cloudy and 59 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ Calm wind. A bit gray this morning, but it’s expected skies will clear around noontime.

I can’t believe that the we are starting out this morning so cloudy โ˜๏ธ, but I’m hopeful that we will see more sun โ˜€ later. At least it’s a nice enough of a morning for the walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป. My laptop is fully charged so I can work out back later on when it’s gets nicer. Might as well work outside today as tomorrow and Thursday it’s back in the office ๐Ÿข. I don’t mind but I like the sunshine when I can get it.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 76 degrees at 3pm. Typical for today. Maximum dew point of 49 at 11am. Calm wind becoming southwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 68 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 1918.

Today I will work from home after my morning walk. I need to get groceries, ๐Ÿ‘œ contact solution, ๐Ÿ‘€ and some other supplies at lunch time so I want to head to Walmart today. I probably should get groceries for the weekend, although maybe I can get out on Thursday night after work. I will probably start packing for the weekend, ๐Ÿ’ผ as I might have to work late on Thursday night or end up over in the archives continuing to sort, pack and dry John Wolcott’s files. ๐Ÿ“‚ I plan to leave early Friday morning at this point to work remote from Lake Pleasant and camp up that way over the weekend. ๐Ÿ– Going to be a hot weekend and even hotter next week. While I could probably work remote on next Tuesday, I probably will come back Monday night after work so I have time to prepare for next week in office and Wednesday and Thursday and work from home on the following Tuesday.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.5ยฐ from the due south horizon (-1.3ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:45 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (295ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (302ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:27 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 23 seconds with dusk around 9:00 pm, which is 47 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:45 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 66 degrees. The dew point will be 51 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 15 hours and 6 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 16 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 50 degrees at 4am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 23rd. Light southwest wind. In 2020, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 45 degrees. The record low of 39 occurred back in 1971.

Today I expect my Bluetooth speaker ๐Ÿ”Š to arrive in the mail โœ‰. The old one I’ve had for six years now stopped charging ๐Ÿ”‹ and the battery life wasn’t great. I thought about trying to take it apart for parts or repair ๐Ÿ›  but opening the waterproof case will be a rather destructive process I fear and the result wouldn’t be great in a wet and muddy camp environment. I kind of think it would be fun to shoot ๐Ÿ”ซ it and then burn it but that rubber would stink to high heaven and I couldn’t salvage parts. I hope I got a good quality model, I researched it over a couple of days but I don’t know. Always hard to know which on line reviews are legit. As long as it’s loud enough to be heard over woods and road noise and the battery life is reasonable I’m good.

Going to be a nice, hot summer weekend. ๐ŸŠ Saturday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 86. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 64 at 7pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 89. Maximum dew point of 66 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 77 degrees. Yeah, that’s going to be a toasty one especially back in Albany. With that heat I’ll definitely want the screen tent not just to keep cool but control the bugs. Thinking of doing some swimming in Speculator and maybe some fishing. ๐ŸŽฃ I thought about going to the Green Mountains but I like being closer to WI-FI should something come up, and I prefer to do my Friday meeting using the laptop rather then the phone, especially when I’m away from home with the virtual background.

As previously noted, next Tuesday is 8:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ when the sun will be setting at 8:31 pm with dusk at 9:06 pm. On that day in 2020, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 81 and 49 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 93 back in 2011. It is quite possible we break that record this year, it seems like the dog days of summer will be coming early this year.

 Bourne And Grout Pond

May 16, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. โ›ช Nice morning and so far the black flies aren’t out in mass yet. ๐Ÿœ Four weeks to Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ . Mostly sunny and 51 degrees in Speculator, NY. Light breeze from the west.

Yesterday I did a 3 mile hike along a bunch of dirt roads at Spectulator Tree Farm. ๐ŸŒฒI plan to upload those photos from my other camera ๐Ÿ“ธ later on probably after also hiking Watch Hill today. Lots of birds and wildlife and some nice quiet views. ๐Ÿฆ I liked hiking for hours without seeing anyone, the breeze kept the black flies away ๐Ÿœ and the mix of timberland and woods meant there was much to see. Came back to camp, made up a big bowl of macaroni and cheese ๐Ÿง€ with corn ๐ŸŒฝ and ham. Good dinner after a nice day, had a fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ and watched the stars โœจ. Got a bit sunburnt and are a bit achy last night ๐Ÿค• but I figure that’s just summer coming on or skin cancer.

Today will have a slight chance of showers between noon and 2pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. โšก Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 65 degrees at 1pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 28th. Calm wind becoming west around 6 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 73 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1991.

My plan is to get a fairly early start – after my breakfast of eggs and coffee โ˜• take down camp and head into town for ice. I haven’t turned my truck on since Thursday evening ๐Ÿ”‹ but I know the starting battery is fully charged as the solar has done well, especially yesterday with the bright ๐Ÿ”† sunshine.

I want to do a hike up Watch Hill ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป before the thunderstorms โ›ˆ hit later. I don’t want tbe to be hiking in a thunderstorm especially with my quite worn boots ๐Ÿ‘ข that no longer have good traction in the rain. I’m going to order a new pair on Monday along with some jeans ๐Ÿ‘–. I need more clothes now that starting next week I’ll be working downtown a few days a week.

I thought about other hikes ๐Ÿ—ป but I like Watch Hill and I’m not expecting too many crowds off season but it should be pretty with everything greening up nicely. Easy hike, I should be off it by afternoon when the thunderstorms roll in. I like sitting down by the lake. ๐Ÿฆ I’ll keep my eyes out for birds and wildlife.

Then camp off by Mason Lake tonight โ›บ and head back to town to work in Spectulator in the morning and head home thereafter. Technically, I don’t have to be in the office until Wednesday but I want a day home to unpack ๐Ÿ’ผ and plus I would rather do the Zoom Meetings from the library Wi-Fi than my phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ as it looks bad to be zooming from camp when other colleagues are in the downtown office. Hybrid for now. It will be nice to see some of my colleagues in the office, ๐Ÿข especially the ones I’ve Zoomed with mostly lately.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:55 pm with sun having an altitude of 65.7ยฐ from the due south horizon (-4.3ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:35 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (291ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (298ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:17 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 19 seconds with dusk around 8:49 pm, which is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the west (266ยฐ) at an altitude of 41ยฐ from the horizon, 244,296 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:32 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 57 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and 45 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 6 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 7pm, then a slight chance of showers between 7pm and 9pm. Partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 43 degrees at 5am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 2nd. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 54 degrees. The record low of 30 occurred back in 1959.

Should be a decent evening. ๐ŸŒƒ I could stay until Tuesday but I think Monday night makes the most sense. Work from my actual apartment on Tuesday and get my suit ready for Wednesday. ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿซ The good thing had to end with the pandemic ending and I kind of look forward to my own time on the bus ๐Ÿš. Plus it gets hot especially working from home without air conditioning. I’m just glad that the vaccine is so effective ๐Ÿ’‰ and they repaired Piseco-Powley Road, ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ meaning easy trips to the Potholers and the Mine Kill Pool will be open once again.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ when the sun will be setting at 8:39 pm with dusk at 9:14 pm. On that day in 2020, we had a pretty cool but partly sunny day with temperatures between 66 and 46 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 79 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 1892.

High Point

April 27, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Pink Moon ๐ŸŒ• ! It was pretty brilliant last night, although I didn’t stay up too late or under the moonlight because it was too cold with breeze, and because I decided the fire risk was too high to have a fire. Next Tuesday is 8:30 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† . Partly cloudy and 42 degrees in Speculator, NY. โ›… There is a west breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Maybe more sun for a while mid-day but I’m not expecting a real beautiful day for sure.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 59 degrees at 5pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 17th. West wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 46 degrees. Kind of like today, although I am sure it is warmer back in Albany. The skies will clear around 11 am.er back in Albany. The record high of 91 was set in 1962. Nothing like that today. There was a dusting of snow in 1946.โ„

Back up a the Spectulator Library, working remotely. ๐Ÿ’ป I have to head home this evening after work, as I have a meeting on Wednesday downtown, and truth be told the next few days are going to be quite rainy. But it’s nice to get away for a few days for sure. I wish we had more sun today, โ˜€๏ธ but I didn’t use the electric lights last night, for quick take down, so my battery bank is in good shape ๐Ÿ”‹ for today. I might work down by the lake after lunch, it depends on how mild it was.

Last night was nice, but a bit chilly. ๐Ÿ’จ While there was a lot of moonlight, the wind was whipping around although by the time I got back from my walk after dark along Old Route 8B, there wasn’t so much of a cold wind whipping around. ๐ŸŒŸ But with the dry grass and the wind, ๐ŸŒฑ I decided the night was best for sitting next to the propane heater, looking at the stars rather then starting a fire. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:56 pm with sun having an altitude of 60.4° from the due south horizon (-9.5° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:16 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (284°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (290°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:55 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 8 seconds with dusk around 8:25 pm, which is one minute and 10 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:04 pm. At sunset, look for rain showers ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 56 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 13 hours and 59 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 39 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 42 degrees at 5am. Typical for tonight. Light and variable wind. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2020, we had light rain in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 39 degrees. The record low of 25 occurred back in 1947.

Cool this weekend with temperatures running 11 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 50. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 59. Typical average high for the weekend is 65 degrees. Actually, that isn’t too bad when you consider you are comparing Spectulator weather to Albany weather. Not sure if I have plans for the weekend — I’ve thought about maybe Madison County, as it’s been a while since I’ve been on the road, although maybe I want a weekend off after this weekend. I’ve really wanted to do some paddling along Nine Mile Swamp ๐Ÿšค and I could certainly work remotely one day up at Cherry Ridge Camping Area.

As previously noted, next Tuesday is 8 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ when the sun will be setting at 8:03 pm with dusk at 8:34 pm. On that day in 2020, we had partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 61 and 45 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 66 degrees. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1944.

Pond Loop Trail

January 28, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Wolf Moon ๐ŸŒ• ! I wonder what Sauk County’s ๐Ÿฎ most famous resident, Aldo Leopold would have to say about such things? ๐Ÿบ I bet if he was still around, he’d be saying thing that made both liberals and conservatives hate him – uncomfortable truths. Five weeks to Average High is 40 โ˜€๏ธ . That just seems depressing at this point. Overcast, and 23 degrees in Delmar. โ˜ I don’t understand where the sun is? Must be the Trumpster’s fault. There is a northwest breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is 7. There are 4 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThe skies will clear around 9 am.

So the million dollar question, is where is the sun? ๐ŸŒฅ I thought today was supposed to be sunny and nice but cold. I want a little bit of sun so my battery bank in my truck gets a bit of a trickle charge, so I don’t lug the batteries too hard with the starter or have a sluggish start. ๐Ÿ”‹ While I don’t really expect difficulty starting, I don’t like to turn-over the engine without a good solidly charged battery. I cleaned off the truck and solar panel yesterday, so things should top off once the sun comes out. ๐Ÿ˜Ž And I’m sure that thanks to this blog post, I will get dozens of advertisements about car batteries that are on sale. ๐Ÿคฌ I probably wouldn’t have even noticed any issue had I not had all those meters all over my truck and probably some vampire loads I could disconnect but they don’t really harm anything, especially when the panel is topping off the full bank.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 24 degrees at 2pm. Seven degrees below normal. Northwest wind 9 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. ๐ŸŒฌ And the wind chills will get more noticeable later. Albany Police take notice, that’s 2 miles over the speed limit. ๐Ÿš“ A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 37 degrees. The record high of 56 was set in 1916. 9.6 inches of snow fell back in 1897.โ„

Going to be a cold day ๐Ÿƒ but I’m really hoping on sun โ˜€ later. I plan on going to the store ๐Ÿฌ during lunch time and then to the library during the afternoon. ๐Ÿ“š Probably won’t spend a great deal of time there because it’s kind of cold โ„ although not as bad as tomorrow. I’m going to notch the heat up a few degrees too, so things don’t get too cold inside, and the landlord asked that I keep the cabinets under the sink open so they don’t freeze. Tomorrow I’ll probably stay home except for the morning walk. Last night I skipped the walk — I was feeling kind of lazy and was concerned about slipping on the ice.

I sent in $15 in memory of Mr. Franz for the local foodbank.๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’ I think it’s nice that he asked that donations be made to the local foodbank in his name.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:09 pm with sun having an altitude of 29.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-41.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 10.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:22 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (239ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (246ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:04 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 10 seconds with dusk around 5:33 pm, which is one minute and 18 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Wolf Full ๐Ÿบ๐ŸŒ Moon in the east-northeast (67ยฐ) at an altitude of 7ยฐ from the horizon, 238,139 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:08 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 21 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be 6. โ˜ƒ๏ธ Breezy, 18 mph breeze โ›… from the northwest with gusts up to 33mph. Today will have 9 hours and 51 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 14 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 3 degrees at 6am. 12 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -14 at 6am. How negative an outlook to have. Northwest wind 15 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. In 2020, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 19 degrees. The record low of -10 occurred back in 1925.

Cool this weekend with temperatures running 13 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. ๐ŸŒฌ Saturday, sunny, with a high near 17. Northwest wind 8 to 10 mph. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 20. โ˜€ Typical average high for the weekend is 31 degrees. I’ll have to think about my plans. Not quite as windy this weekend, so maybe I’ll get out somewhere this weekend. Normally on these cold weekends I walk down to the library but we aren’t living in normal times. Maybe I’ll do Five Rivers, or the rail trail is fairly protected from the wind in the gorge, but I don’t like how it’s gotten so overridden by yuppies lately.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 51 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผThat means tomorrow will be 50 days, and Saturday will be seven weeks. Dully noted. Good for hauling water and heavy equipment, but stay out of the mud, so you don’t sink out of sight. Don’t ask me how I know.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk Day ๐Ÿฅ› when the sun will be setting at 5:22 pm with dusk at 5:51 pm. On that day in 2020, we had cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 39 and 34 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 34 degrees. We hit a record high of 59 back in 1981.
