May 10, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Average High is 70 ๐Ÿฎ! Happens earlier this time of year now that we’re using the earlier climate normals. But today certainly won’t hit seventy, it will be cold and damp. Next Monday is Pack Rat Day ๐Ÿ€ . Cloudy, damp and 47 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a north-northwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Rain is done but the clouds and dampness will stick around until the evening. The skies will clear around 5 pm.

A nice morning for the walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป before the new routine kicks back in. ๐Ÿš It’s going to be tough for a while with the reduced bus service, no express bus and the local route I normally would take runs earlier due to reduced service. But I’ll make it work, just have to set my alarm โฐ clock earlier.

I am going to work downtown ๐Ÿข just one day this week, but starting next week I’ll be downtown three days a week. ๐Ÿšฝ Landlord is working on my plumbing midweek so it would be distracting plus I want to get back to the office before most staff is there so I can clean up my desk and make sure my office computer ๐Ÿ–ฅ still runs and has time to make updates.

I need to order more of the Jackson Mask, ๐Ÿ˜ท and I am planning to reduce my Hotspot plan ๐Ÿ“ฑ come next week. I don’t think it will be long before the library reopens for inside computer use and being in the office half the week means I won’t be needing nearly as much data. I’ll probably drop it entirely come the end of June.

Today will have a slight chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 60 degrees at 4pm. 10 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 17th. Northwest wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 58 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1970. 5 inches of snow fell back in 1945.โ„

While working from home ๐Ÿก if I have downtime, I need to get my dress shirt and pants ironed. ๐Ÿ‘” I also need to do some cleaning again in preparation for the landlord’s arrival and because I don’t like for things to be too dirty all of the time. ๐Ÿšฟ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 65.1ยฐ from the due south horizon (-5.7ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:26 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (289ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (295ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:06 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 11 seconds with dusk around 8:37 pm, which is one minute and 5 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:17 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 54 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 27 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 14 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 40 degrees at 4am. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 24th. West wind around 8 mph. In 2020, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 38 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 2010.

I’ve also been looking at Bluetooth speakers ๐Ÿ”Š to replace the one I bought five years ago that isn’t charging well. I like listening to tunes and podcasts up at camp and my phone isn’t loud enough with the background noise in the woods and sometimes I like to listen to music ๐ŸŽถloud which kind of wrecks the drivers.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, a chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 69. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 44 at 7pm. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 69. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 46 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 71 degrees.

I was on the fence but I’m thinking this weekend of heading up to the Adirondacks, โ›ฐ starting on Thursday before work, and then working Thursday, Friday and Monday up in Speculator. A lot depends on the weather. I was thinking about Madison County but I’m not that big into campground camping, as I like to be able listen to music and shoot guns, etc. ๐ŸŽต

As previously noted, next Monday is Pack Rat Day ๐Ÿ€ when the sun will be setting at 8:13 pm with dusk at 8:45 pm. On that day in 2020, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 74 and 54 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 72 degrees. We hit a record high of 92 back in 2017.

Hudson River Below Henderson Lake

March 15, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Ides of March โœ! Three weeks to Palm Sunday ๐ŸŒด. Mostly sunny and 33 degrees at the Albany Pine Bush Preserve. There is a north breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 8 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Out for a walk this morning in the Pine Bush ๐Ÿšถ and hope to meet some people later in the day. Really pretty morning, so much blue sky. ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒMaybe later go to Thacher Park or maybe just Bennett Hill depending on the weather.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 45 degrees at 4pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 17th. North wind around 8 mph. A year ago, we had rain in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 72 degrees. The record high of 72 was set in 2019. 10.4 inches of snow fell back in 1916.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:05 pm with sun having an altitude of 45.4ยฐ from the due south horizon (-25.3ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:25 pm with the sun in the west (262ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (268ยฐ) starting at 7:00 pm and lasts for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:30 pm, which is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:04 pm. It’s nice having the extra hour in the evening. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 37 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 56 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 55 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 16 degrees at 6am. 10 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 10th. North wind 5 to 7 mph. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 31 degrees. The record low of 4 occurred back in 1980. I Going to be chilly tonight, gonna have to turn the heat on before bed.

Today in 44 BC, Julius Caesar, Dictator of the Roman Republic, is stabbed to death by Marcus Junius Brutus, Gaius Cassius Longinus, Decimus Junius Brutus, and several other Roman senators on the Ides of March. Plus don’t forget that song Vehicle by the Ides of March. Good song for friendly stranger in black sedans. ๐Ÿš™ Nowadays they’d probably be SUVs with big speakers.

I wasn’t so freaked out about the media crap over Coronavirus ๐Ÿ˜ท but increasingly I am concerned after hearing about it on the Skeptics Guide to the Universe ๐ŸŒŒ. The truth is that there ain’t a lot to do besides wash one’s hands ๐Ÿ‘ good and pray ๐Ÿ™. Social distancing might help but I’m skeptical – how much time โŒš will it buy? Is it worth the high economic and social costs? I guess only time will tell. The whole situation is both abursd and kind of frightening. ๐Ÿ‘พ

Russian or Chinese Trolls Who Like Write?

I keep getting these rather strangely worded emails from people offering to write articles for my blog.๐Ÿ“ฉ Many of them seem like foreign language speakers, maybe Russian troll farms or Chinese intelligence officers. I just ignore these emails โ˜  and put them in the trash bin. โ™ป My blog is my place, so I don’t have guest bloggers, as I like to have one-hundred percent control over the content.

Fall is a great time for smartphones and camping!

Hey there,

Fall is my favorite time of year to go camping. Iโ€™ll love the crisp air, the changing leaves, and the chance to disconnect before the craziness of the holidays begins.

However, while I certainly enjoy time away from email, texts, and social media, I wouldnโ€™t dream of leaving my smartphone at home. Thanks to a variety of helpful apps, trackers, and tools, my smartphone has basically become my modern-day multi-tool.

Iโ€™d like to write an article for your site about how you can use your smartphone to make your next camping trip even better. Is this something youโ€™d be interested in posting on your site? If so, Iโ€™m happy to send it to you free of charge. Just let me know. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks a lot!

Campfire

Even on farm roads!

I would like to be a writer of articles. I also like to post weekly updates of hiking, trail running , backpacking,cross-country ski and snowshoe trail conditions for all of Western New York.

I wrote 2 articles in the Snowshoe Magazine. And I will send along a cover letter and resume.

I also wondering if there any paid positions available. If not here do a suggestion of another company I contact.

I would give Conditions and updates on Dirt roads , gravel roads, fire roads , single track trails, hiking trails, bike trails and farmers roads, farmers trails and access roads and access trails. It would be year around reports for hiking, backpacking, trail running, biking and walking . In the winter skiing and snowshoeing. Also possibly dog walking and horseback riding.

February 3, 2019 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Cloudy and 35 degrees in Delmar. โ˜ Finally warmed up and things are melting. We are in the second half of winter now, that the Ground Hog say his shadow and said early spring. There is a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There are 6 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธTemperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 4 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ I guess I won’t have to worry about icy roads tonight.

This morning I slept in and did a fair bit of cleaning and working on some code on my laptop. ๐Ÿšฟ Been so dang busy lately that I’m enjoying my day off. I’m also really digging the warmer weather and being able to cut the heat while remaining quite comfortable.

Today I have to go to the store and return my beer cans and buy some groceries. I should also take out the trash and recyclables as the bucket is getting full and something us starting to rot. ๐Ÿ๐ŸŒI have enough room for now to store the recycling before I have to go to the transfer station. โ™ปProbably won’t need a lot of groceries but I want to have enough food and supplies so I won’t have to go anywhere this week. I’m expecting a less busy week this week but still a lot of late nights.

Lunch is next onmy agenda. ๐Ÿ— I was thinking about going out cross country skiing today at Partridge Run but the skies are already pretty dark and depressing. ๐Ÿ™And honestly I’ve been so busy so I need some time to clean and recover. Yesterday I reglued and clamped my boots so hopefully they’ll hold up well skiing. I should work on the tips of my skis next as they are coming apart a bit too. ๐Ÿ‘ขImaybe it wait to next weekend and let the boots dry more and also glue the tips of the skis, assuming there is snow come next weekend. ๐Ÿ‚

This afternoon will be cloudy โ˜, with a high of 39 degrees at 4pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around March 1st. South wind around 6 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy. The high last year was 29 degrees. The record high of 57 was set in 2016. 6.1 inches of snow fell back in 2004.โ„

The sun will set at 5:11 pm with dusk around 5:41 pm, which is one minute and 19 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 39 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 5 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 25 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 31 degrees at 5am. 16 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around March 29th. South wind around 7 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 27 degrees. The record low of -13 occurred back in 1978.

Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a high of 48 degrees at 2pm. 16 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around March 24th. Not a great day but it will save on the heating bills, and whatever, I’ll have to work. South wind 7 to 9 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy. The high last year was 34 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1991. 15.5 inches of snow fell back in 1926.โ„ That was a big one.

I was happy I could easily replace the broken sound jack in my laptop. Easy fix once I stumbled upon how inexpensive and easy to access part it was to install when I was upgrading to the SSD drive.๐Ÿ”ง The broken headphone jack was annoying even if the external USB audio dongle worked just fine, and indeed when I’m home I’m sure I’ll just use my computer speakers powered by that device๐ŸŽง.

I got my hair cut and that came out nicely but I may need to adjust my sideburns slightly.๐Ÿ’ˆ Had a nice breakfast with my parents at Jake Moons Cafe. After visiting my niece for a while, I went down to the library for the internet, then came home watched some short YouTube videos I had downloaded, while riding the exercise bike, worked on some code on my laptop, went for my evening walk around the super block pass the school, then came back home.๐Ÿšถ Fish sticks again tonight, I still have a lot left in the mega bag I bought.๐Ÿค They’re not the most favorable fish sticks ever but with good fries, ketchup and lots of frozen sweet corn they’re pretty good and not a lot of packaging.

I’m continuing to work on my new LED driver. With the more power processor with the esp32 microprocessor and growing skills at programming the processors and use of the Bluetooth communication protocol, I’ve been working on a complete rewrite of the code. โ™‹I finally got the code to the point of having the sunset and sunrise modes I enjoy to remind myself of when I need to get up and go to bed,๐ŸŒ† and I’ve started but not completed the hooks for the timer so the virtual sunset and sunrise happens automatically. Hopefully I’ll have that part working by the time I get up on Monday morning. I’ve also been working on various improvements to the color models and switching between colors to make them less jagged๐ŸŽข. I haven’t started on the updated smartphone app, I’ve just been using the Arduino Bluetooth app to send plain text codes to operate things for now. Eventually it will be a full app with the ease of point and click, probably finished by spring time when I’ll be spending more time in the wilderness.

Looking ahead, there are 5 weeks until Daylight Savings Time ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 6:56 pm with dusk at 7:24 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2018, we had mostly sunny, snow showers and temperatures between 38 and 29 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 42 degrees. I bet we might even have warmer weather by then too. We hit a record high of 72 back in 1977.

Looking ahead, it’s going to be fairly cool but sunny next weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 23. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees. Not totally sure what I will next weekend.

Next weekend is the Adirondack Outdoorsman show in Johnstown.๐ŸŒฒ I might drive up there next weekend and then maybe head up to NY 8 for a night in the wilderness depending on how much snow there is. That said, I don’t know. It’s kind of a long trip for one night and it’s quite a ways north. I’ll have to think about it some more. It’s a fun little show but it’s a bit of a trip especially for just the show or even just one night of camping. Trying to save money so I have more money for my summer adventures. โ›บ

In four weeks on March 3 the sun will be setting at 5:47 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 35 minutes and 51 seconds later then today. In 2018 on that day, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 42 and 32 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 39 and 21 degrees. The record high of 64 degrees was set back in 2002.

I’m glad the Ground Hog saw his shadow and warmer weather is promised. ๐ŸŒทIt’s been much too cold lately and it’s sucks with the heating bills and not being able to get out and walk as much as I would like. That said I went for a pretty pleasant walk tonight. ๐ŸšถBut I do look forward to being warm enough to sit out back with a cold glass of orange juice or water, ๐ŸŠand obviously to spend nice evenings in the wilderness up at camp, having a cold beer next to the fire.๐Ÿ”ฅ

Looking ahead, Daylight Savings Time ๐ŸŒ† is in 5 weeks, St. Patrick’s Day ๐Ÿ€ is in 6 weeks, 7:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ is in 9 weeks, Palm Sunday ๐ŸŒด is in 10 weeks, Easter ๐Ÿฐ is in 11 weeks, Cinco de Mayo ๐Ÿค  is in 13 weeks, Mothers Day ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€ is in 14 weeks, Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ is in 19 weeks and Election Day 2020 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 21 months.

December 20, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Two weeks to Latest Sunrise of the Winter ๐ŸŒ„๏ธ. Tomorrow is the first day of winter. Mostly sunny and 33 degrees in Delmar. Calm wind. Rather hazy though in the city. Fairly pleasant morning, but I’m more then a bit drowsy.๐Ÿ’ค

A nice morning but I had trouble getting going this morning, โ˜€ as I had too many cups of coffee at the Pine Bush dinner and that effected my sleep. โ˜•ย Not only did I drink coffee with dinner, I drank more when I started to choke on one of the cookies during the dinner. Kind of a busy day yesterday but after it all I did make it to the Pine Bush dinner. ๐ŸŒฒTaking the local to work. ๐ŸšŒ

The sun will set at 4:24 pm with dusk around 4:56 pm, which is 28 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 40 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph.

Today will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a high of 41 degrees at 1pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 3rd. South wind 3 to 6 mph. A year ago, we had with more clouds in the afternoon. The high last year was 40 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1957. 8.4 inches of snow fell back in 1975.โ„

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ” with 97% illuminated with the moon rising at 3:03 pm. The moon will set at 5:51 am. December’s Cold Moonย ๐ŸŒ• will be tomorrow. The sun will rise at 7:21 am with the first light at 6:49 am, which is 32 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 14 hours and 57 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 seconds over last night.

Tonight will rain, mainly after 9pm. The rain could be heavy at times. ๐ŸŒง Low of 39 degrees at 6pm. 20 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 18th. South wind around 6 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. Going to be a wet and warm night into the day tomorrow. In 2017, we had light snow in the evening. It got down to 21 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1942.

I continue toย work on writing the codeย โŒจย for my niece’sย flashing star,ย ๐Ÿ’ซย right now I’ve come up with 16 different color patterns. It’s a little hard to think of additional ones, although I’m sure there is more ramps and flashing patterns I could come up with. I want to try put as much in as possible in the code, as it would make more interesting, but after a while coming up with new patterns is hard.

The Pine Bush dinner was interesting but I’m not sure if I agree with having speakers pushing commercial products that they’re making money off of. ๐Ÿ’ฐGeothermal is interesting and I guess there are many benefits to solar energy although I have my doubts about those large industrial solar facilities. I think there is a lot of questions that need to be asked about developing large tracks of farm land and forest,๐ŸŽ‹ covering them with panels made out of hazardous materials that will pose risks for generations to come especially if they aren’t properly hauled off to landfills at the end of their lives. โฌ›ย Cow manure rots, farm fields revert to the woods by themselves without government intervening. But I guess I’m a minority voice, to be grouped in with the fossil fuel proponents just for asking questions of the government bureaucrats.

I will probably go out hiking somewhere on Sunday, maybe not too far away,ย ๐Ÿšถย then out to the folks house for Christmas Eve. It looks like virtually all of the snow except for the highest locations of the Adirondacks will be gone after the heavy rains of Friday into Saturday.ย โ˜”ย With the rain on Saturday, I will finish up working on my various Christmas gifts that I’ve been working on building. I got a bunch of perf and strip board in the mail the other day, for building further products.๐Ÿ”ฌย Always a good thing on cold winter nights, except for the drafts blowing smoke from the flux burning off into my face.

For the New Years Eve long weekend,ย I am considering going camping up in the Adirondacks or maybe Brookfield.ย ๐Ÿ•ย With the snow gone all over locally, and only a little left in the Adirondacks, it might be nice to get away. I still have camp food stored away, the high calorie stuff I don’t like to eat at home and plenty of propane for at least a few nights camping, although if I do a full three nights, I might get the tank to be filled to be safe rather then sorry. A nice fire is always good, and if we have some sunny weather, some hunting and hiking would be a lot of fun. I kind of like Brookfield because those campsites you can drive up into, as if I go there, it will be in snow-free weather. Plus good cellphone reception which can make the long nights pass quicker.

As previously noted, there areย 2 weeks until Latest Sunrise of the Winter ๐ŸŒ„๏ธย when the sun will be setting at 4:34 pm with dusk at 5:06 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 22 and 7 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 1913.

Rays Across the Reservoir

September 18, 2015 evening

Good evening. Currently 62 degrees at the Otter Creek Campsites in Greig, NY. There is a stiff breeze on top of the mountain that is making it feel cooler than the mercury says. The clouds and high pressure will keep the temperatures from dropping off much more.

Tomorrow the summer heat lasts for one more day, heading up to 80 degrees. Then the front comes through and temperatures will drop to 45 degrees by morning. Showers as the front comes through. Sunday will only reach 64 degrees for a high. Sunday evening will be even colder with a steady breeze. No snow is expected, and heck, the first half of autumn is shaping to mostly be above normal temperatures. I guess it’s kind of like an extra summer with short fall days.

Tonight was the first sunset before 7 PM in Delmar although out in Lowville being further west, sunset held off until 7:06 pm. It didn’t matter that much as I couldn’t see the sunset from camp. But with the clouds it was getting dark NY 7:30 PM. The lights are nice but they don’t replace the long nights of early summer.

This morning I had nothing packed but I did go grocery shopping the previous evening. The first thing I did was put the kayak on the roof of my truck, carefully with the step ladder that I bought yesterday. I had a fear of re-injuring my ankle but it was fine, if not easier with the steps tool compared to climbing on the floor boards of the cab. My ankle doesn’t hurt that much these days although I felt it by the time I got packed.

I stopped in Boonville to take a piss break and to drop a bill from the doctor at the Post Office. Nice downtown buy surprisingly bustling and a challenge to park. But then it was off to Turin and eventually to the Otter Creek Campsites.

I was pleasantly surprised that the Otter Creek Campsites had been relocated up the hill, spread out and with new outhouses, picnic tables, and fireplaces. I liked the Otter Creek Campsites because they were close to Whetstone Gulf and Lowville but didn’t like the crowded conditions or wear from heavy use. The new sites are a real improvement. Some are grouped together but the most part are spread out. There remains six sites, with three designed to be wheelchair accessible including accessible outhouses, tables, and a flat gravel base. It’s nice to know the state has developed all these accessible sites, especially if someday I have a severe injury that otherwise confines me to a wheelchair. After spraining your ankle you think about such things more.

This evening went for a drive out to Confusion Flats and out to by Chases Lake. Last time I was up here it was quite rainy and the camera quit working early on the trip before I got pictures. Took both Instagram photos and Digital SLR pictures. Confusion Flats is such beautiful Adirondack Sand Plains. The maps up here are terrible, including the topographic maps and ones created by DEC data. There are a lot of old roads and paths cut through Confusion Flats that are now horse trails, while the truck trails often differ from old routes on topographic maps and some are better quality then the Jeep Trails on the map would suggest. All of the roads up here are just sand and the frequent equestrian use means that the are pitted by horse hooves. At least horse hooves don’t damage sand like the washboard roads of Moose River Plains.

Set up a tarp so I’m prepared for tomorrow’s rain which I’m sure isn’t going to materialize with the tarp up. The Bluetooth adapter with my powered  computer speakers aka now camp speakers works great. I love being able to play on my phone while listening to music, podcasts, and radio – and change the station or song without even leaving my seat. Technology is pretty cool.

I hope you had a good evening. Sleep well.
