Six Weeks Until New Years Eve 🎇

Those extra cups of coffee did me no good yesterday. Not only did it make it impossible to get to sleep, it contributed to my extreme anxiety I had most of the afternoon. I just kind of wanted to relax to some extra coffee yesterday but I guess I really overdone it. I swear I used to drink a lot more coffee when I was younger, and coffee ain’t as strong as it once was when sipping it, but the after effects are much worse. Between the garlic powder gas and shits, the anxiety and staying up too late, I didn’t get much sleep and sleeping past 6 o’clock is unimaginable in my mind at this point.

Not a super cool morning. 😀 I could go for a walk but I want to get to the store pretty earlier and my guts are mess after last night I don’t want to risk an accident out walking. 💩 Could be excess coffee of yesterday ☕ but I think it’s the garlic powder I added to the tomato sauce I had last night, as that previously gave me trouble in West Virginia plus one other time at home. Big bulk container I got from Hannaford, even in moderation it keeps me running to the toilet 🚽 . Could be salmonella or mold growing in the container. I probably should empty it and toss in the recycle bin ♻️ before it gets me sick again. 🤢

Decided on pancakes this morning 🥞 as that’s all I really had left. I was playing with recipes, decided to do ground oatmeal, with one egg, apple cider vinegar and baking soda for levity, and Splenda rather then bananna for sugar. Came out fairly good, little more filling then just ordinary oatmeal-banana pancakes. Topped with shredded apples from the food processor 🍏 heated and cooked down in the microwave, along with chopped bananas. 🍌 Pretty good.

Only shopping through Friday morning, as I plan to get what I need when heading up to the Adirondacks. Not Walmart on Black Friday, but I don’t think Hannaford will be particularly crowded the day after Thanksgiving. Mostly just restocking the pantry full of fruits and veggies, though I’m also going to get a big bag of frozen salmon fillets as I have that other coupon too. 🎫 Eating lots of omega-3 is good.

Been continuing on the Udemy Courses. 🎓 I am on my third course after two courses on remote sensing. 🛰 So far done is Remote Sensing with QGIS: Basics of Satellite Imagery Classification and Fundamentals of Remote Sensing and Geospatial Analysis. Been learning a lot. It’s wonderful that my public library 📚 offers these classes for free and you get free certifications 📄 after you get done watching the classes and doing the quizzes. The most recent one is Spatial Data Analysis with R, QGIS & More which is good but it’s about 7 or 8 years out of date, and doesn’t show a recent version of QGIS and uses the obsolete R library of rgeos rather then sf and terra which is used today. But still it’s interesting and good to learn as a big part of the class is about kriging, which is something I am still struggling to fully understand. 🗺 📍

Yesterday I checked out the Bethlehem Sportsmart ⛷ and was shocked at the prices of skis, especially ones in good quality. At over $100 for a pair of cross-country skis, I think I’d be best off to get a pair at a retailer, maybe after the holidays, one that fits and works properly for my needs. It was mobbed at the sportsmart, with screaming babies 👶 and children running around. 🧒 The skis I have currently are groomed-track skis, which besides being broken, really aren’t good for the kind of cross-country skiing I do that rarely involves following groomed tracks. 🤑 The problem with those skis is they are too fast and sink too deep in unpacked snow, the prior is a particular concern when descending mountains, especially now that I’m close to 41 years old, and crashing with skis may very well mean broken bones. 🤕 Plus I wasn’t in the mood to spend any money right now, to say nothing about that I’m not sure if it will be a particularly snowy winter. I might just stay closer to home this winter, do more bike riding 🚴‍♀️ on the roads. Winter ski season is so short around here, and it’s often quite cold int he winter.

Didn’t end up being able to fix the vacuum cleaner yesterday, 🧹 turns out that after I got it all apart, then put it back to work, I found out the source of the rattle — bad ball bearing. After fiddling for it for a few more hours, I ended up pulling the motor and any part I could reuse or scrap. ⚙ Heck of it is I had it back to together and it was working until it’s started sparking and not working again. ⚡ Disappointing crap, I bought it only 7 years ago but ever since I got it constantly plugged, burned up belts and malfunctioned. If I get another vacuum, I am going to get a small rechargeable hand held 🤲 one as I don’t really have that much carpet in my apartment and then I can do the stairs and vacuum out the mud and dust from my truck better. I’m just annoyed by all that plastic trash, even I will be able to reuse the switch and cord from the vacuum for camp lighting, 🔌 and may be able to part out parts of the motor for electronics projects or add to the stack of scrap metal for eventual recycling at the scrap yard. ♻️ It wasn’t a real cheap vacuum — it was like $70 or $80 bucks, a Dirt Devil Pet Hair Vacuum but it constantly plugged on wads of hair and dust. I bought it because the reviews were good originally, and I figured a pet hair vacuum wouldn’t clog as much as a standard vacuum. 🐶 I guess don’t believe the review. I just hate carpet, when I have my own land, I don’t ever want that indoors. Especially not the gross, nasty worn out shag carpet like in my apartment.

The broken vacuum cleaner, the debate in my mind to renew or not renew my certificate of deposit, the signing of Clean Slate last week, getting my ego knocked down a peg for that messed up background at work, and cold weather 🤪 plus all that coffee just really got me into a bad place by last night. 🤯 My mind was racing, I just kind of felt sick. The whole thing was stupid, it wasn’t entirely my fault I messed up the background, the researcher and big boss didn’t catch it either. 💣 The vacuum cleaner was cheap shit it never worked right. The truck is going to be fine for another year. Then I got the shits from that garlic powder. 💩 Yuck, I was so sick for a while. Did I mention I burnt my finger 👆 on the soldering iron when I was working last night. 😠 I was just so bitter, angry and frustrated all evening. I mean it’s stupid, what happened at work isn’t the end of world, moving to a new department soon, the seven-year old vacuum cleaner was less then a tank of gas these days, my truck will likely make it another year, it’s winter it’s cold but I am still planning adventures, I can get better skis somewhere else, and the coffee and shits will wear themselves off.

But regardless, I had a nice bicycle ride out to Voorheesville. 🚲 The bridge is fully re-opened, they did a nice job, it’s a very smooth ride up and over the bridge. On the west side of the bridge it’s a slight upgrade, but the expansion gaps are remarkably smooth and it’s blacktop, all the more surprising for a “temporary bridge”. Truth is they did such a nice job on the “temporary” bridge that they really don’t have a good reason to necessarily replace it anytime soon. Sat and watched the 4 PM freight train roll through Voorheesville 🚂 then watched the sunset 🌆 from Bender Mellon Farms and rode home quickly, thinking it would get dark but it didn’t so I rode down to Adams Street then back along the designated bike route through the back roads of Delmar. Great evening even if it was shitty day in so many ways. That part of the day was pretty nice, even if I got sick in evening 😫 and my mind was racing the rest of day. 🤪

Last night made homemade tomato sauce with canned tomatoes, Italian spices, spinach, peas, chopped garlic, crushed red pepper, smoked paprika and kidney beans. Added a little bit of lentil pasta towards the end. Tasted good, very filling and kept me full. 🥘 It as all good until I added some garlic powder (really not much), which totally blew up my stomach starting around midnight, with frequent visits the bathroom and everything stinking of garlic. I don’t know why I have such problems with this garlic powder I got the other day — crushed garlic is good. I thought the problem was the whole wheat flour I got from Price Chopper but I’m pretty sure it’s the garlic powder. Been having a lot of stomach issues lately, I thought I would adjust to the high-fiber diet but it’s proven difficult. 🤰

Got reading about the latest generation of single board computers 🖥 which keep getting more and more powerful and cheaper. Technology on this front is advancing so quickly, it’s a golden age to be a hobbyist with things like the original Arduino from years ago seeming so out of date. 🤖 Then I got reading about stomach issues as my stomach grumbled, and this really weird thread on the internet where people fight about whether or not sugars in excessive fruit consumption 🍌 🍏 🐒 lead to fatty liver disease and diabetes. Most of the experts think the benefit of the extra fiber far outweigh any downsides to a diet rich in fruits, though I do eat a lot of fruit (and vegetables too). Probably too much fruit but I like sweet. But I also don’t eat any food with added sugars if I can all avoid it, which is what most doctors 👨‍⚕️ think really are a big threat to health. I am a bit obsessed with fatty liver disease after people warned me about the risk of loosing so much weight so quickly. Hell of it is I don’t have much control over my weight, it really is a just a side effect of diet. Hard to gain too much when your stuffing your face with fruits, vegetables and beans all of the time, and riding to work and walking everywhere.

Next Friday through the following Monday is looking good for the Adirondacks 🏕 though only time will determine for sure. ❄️ It looks like the snow event in Wednesday isn’t going to leave feet of snow up north, so I should be able to get back to camp without doing a lot of shoveling or hauling gear back, though worse come to worse, I’ll bring the sled and drag gear back. 🛷 The weekend looks to be cool but not as cold as they first predicted ☕ and warm coffee and meals along with the heater should be good. And I can get away from it all.

I was on the fence about riding in today but I figured it would save a buck thirty and I figured even if the weather is crap for the evening I’m not going to be riding home as it’s dark out.

Yesterday I got sweet onions 🧅 and that was the first thing I chopped up this morning and fried up with spinach, mushrooms 🍄 tomatoes 🍅 and eggs 🥚. You know a good fiber and protein rich breakfast. 🍳 When I make up eggs, it’s rarely more than the eggs are glue to be used with all those delicious 😋 vegetables.

Continuing that Udemy Course on Remote Sensing using the Semi Automatic Classification plugin 🗺. Indeed while I may learn with QGIS I’d probably end up using R just because it’s faster to write code then click on all those dialogs.

Maybe the bigger issue is that next weekend might be cold ❄ quite cold up north. It’s not the mercury I’m concerned about but if it’s windy out or not. That wind chill can really get to you.

May 7, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy 8 PM Sunset 🌇 ! Days are definitely getting longer, with lots of daylight in evening after work. Three weeks to Memorial Day Weekend Starts 🏕️ . I can’t believe that’s so close. It won’t be like last year for sure. Mostly sunny and 36 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌞 Calm wind.

A nice spring morning. 🌸 I’m thinking it won’t be long before it’s real hot out. 70 degrees days are quite rare in the Albany area. Usually it’s cool in the 60s in May until it’s in the 80s and 90s. The official 70 degree days in range are usually just due to averages, not actual conditions on the ground. It just turns out we rarely have truly average weather, it’s more a combination of the extremes. That said, with the current weather pattern, I’d say it’s going to be quite a bit on cool side of things for a while.

The express bus stop remains empty this morning, 🚏 but it looks like it’s ready whenever service returns. I can’t imagine it will be long, the New York City Subways are restoring full service in the next few weeks, and it seems like they are bringing back more state employees every day. 🚌 I am going to be working downtown more over the next few weeks, and maybe it will be transitioning back to a more normal way of doing things. But it will be a pain until they fully restore rush hour service and end capacity limits on the elevators 👩‍👩‍👦‍👦 during the evening rush. Maybe I can take the stairs. 🧗‍♂️ Honestly, I kind of liked remote work and doing things from the Spectulator library, 💻 while camping in back country, but I guess things have change, although I think it’s silly as the way we’ve done things over the past year works okay.

Been thinking about what the best way to do weather average for the blog. 🌩 Do you use the 15-year climate averages or the more typical 30-year climate averages? Good question! I feel like the 15-year averages from 2006-2020 might be too based on decadal trends that are particularly unusual and it’s possible that the 2020s will be cooler, although with climate change I have my doubts. ❄️ Most meteorologists use the 1991-2020 averages, which I might end up using just for consistency sake. Plus this allows me to celebrate at least in my head on what a nice warm day it is, even if it’s not really the case. Even with the longer averages, there is no more time periods at least in Albany where the average high temperature is no longer below freezing. So weeks of icy roads and sidewalks seem increasingly unlikely, a thing I’ve noticed in recent years. Climate is getting warmer.

On that day in 2020, we had hot and humid weather with temperatures between 83 and 68 degrees. I remember that well from working up in Spectulator and camping near Mason Lake. Busy, working weekend holiday, but at least I was up north. Typically, the high temperature is 75 degrees. We hit a record high of 93 back in 2016.

Not sure what my Memorial Day Weekend will be like this year, 🐜 but I know that the black flies wait in waiting. Maybe I should plan somewhere are fewer black flies. I could do wilderness camping this year, and avoid crowds at one of state forests outside of mountains. Or I could go up to Vermont or the Adirondacks and swat the black flies. Not sure which days I will be in the office and which days will be remote, so that might depend where I have to go and how god my cell service must be. 📱 If I am planning to work remote, I’ll have to be somewhat near a WI-FI signal as I am reducing my plan to correlate with spending more time in the office, and because I don’t need it as much with things re-opening. I wonder how long before the library is fully re-opened for work inside? 📚

I will probably vote after work, although I brought my absentee ballot with me in case I get stuck at work late and I’ll find a downtown polling place to drop it off at. Honestly, I’m pretty indifferent about this election with yesterday’s men running on the top of the ticket but I probably should vote before 9 pm tonight. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I just wish there was more people of my generation running for president, not geriatric throw backs to the era of the vacuum tube.

For a while this evening it was pretty bitterly cold with the wind. 🍃 It seems like the wind has died down a bit. I went to the Save the Pine Bush Benefit, 🦋 had a Butterfly Lager that was well not the greatest lager ever 🍺 for $7 but Save the Pine Bush got $2 plus I put in the cover charge and I bought a bunch of raffle tickets. 🎫

Very packed event when I left at 9 pm as I have to work tomorrow, didn’t want to drink more than one beer 🍻 and then have to drive home on those narrow city streets. 🚨 Drunk driving laws are so strict these days, and the rare times when I go to the bar, I usually take the bus home 🚍 but not many run on Sunday.

Parking 🅿 wasn’t bad down there, as I parked down a block from the bar and walked 🚶 up there, and with some careful route planning 🌐I managed to avoid all of the red light camera. 🚦 It’s not that hard to avoid them if you take the side streets and plan appropriately to avoid those intersections.

Music 🎶 was kind of loud and not my style 🎸 with all the old folks pulling their hearing aids. 👵I was quite happy to leave and protect my ears 👂 as I do enough damage listening to the moldy oldies and country western with my headphones 🎧jacked up to loud. But the hipsters and others there really digged the act and hopefully will bring a lot of funds in for the battle against developing the Pine Bush.🦋

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Next Friday is Grilled Cheese Day 🧀. Mostly cloudy and 31 degrees at the Four Corners in Bethlehem, NY. ⛅ Calm wind. I missed the express as I had an issue with my contacts 👀 so I ended up deciding to go for a walk down to the four corners. Rain later then the skies will clear tomorrow around 2 pm.

Today it seems like the rain held off so I was able to walk down🚶to the four corners to get some exercise before taking the yokel local because I running a few minutes too late to catch the express bus 🚍. Probably is close to the same amount of time leaving from the four corners as catching the express but not as scenic. 🚆The seat I’m in adjusted strangely not very comfortable. 💺 Cloudy this morning ☁ but the rain is going to hold off until later. ☔ Cool but not so cold this morning, I ended up leaving the heat off last night as it will be in the upper forties by afternoon and mid sixties on Saturday. Things are still warmer with the heat off in my apartment compared to mid winter with the heat on.

I am glad it’s finally a Friday. 🎉Seven weeks from now I’ll be getting ready to swat black flies during the long Memorial Day Weekend. No to Moose River Plains this year over Memorial Day Weekend but I’m inclined to visit the Southern Adirondacks, maybe along Route 8. Been a long week for sure 😕 having to work last Sunday.

I have my neice’s birthday 🎂 party in the afternoon but in the morning I’m thinking about walking out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center, this time not deciding I accidentally leaving the oven on. 😮 It sucked having to run back so quickly the other day after the oven fiasco that turned out to be just some dried out brownies. 🍪

As I noted yesterday I’m thinking about hiking Platte Clove Road on Sunday. 🌲I think I’ve figured out a good legal place to park, although it will add maybe a mile more of a walk. I’ll bring my microspikes in case the road is still icy but I doubt it.🐸 The gates are still closed but I should be able to walk past them. I’ll think about it some more tomorrow. I think it would be a nice full day hike without much mud or muck. Get the blood pumping too. That said if the forecast continues to become cloudy, I might change my mind, maybe do some fishing instead 🎣.Maybe next weekend? The gates open on Platte Clove Road to automobiles 🚘 on April 15th supposedly.

I spent about an hour on the exercise bike 🚲 and then a few hours playing around with mapping on my laptop. I’m trying to get better at simplifying shapefiles and extracting rasters. 🌐 GIS is a really complicated science, I keep learning more each day. I skipped my evening walk because I got working on playing with map data 🔣and honestly I thought it might be cold out.

I thought I had blocked Facebook Lite from running in the background of my phone 📱 but it’s popping up notifications again. I guess I am going to just have to completely uninstall it. I can use the browser for updating my Facebook page every once and a while. It’s just become such a headache in my life. They make that product so obnoxious.

I finally got tired of telemarketers and the certain groups calling me 📞 asking for money and trying to sell shit I don’t want to buy. So I installed an app that I believe automatically sends any phone number that is not in my contacts list 📱 right to voicemail – without that stupid missed call notification. ➿ I regularly check my voice mail when it comes in and then decide to call back.

Most robo calls don’t leave voice mails in my experience.🔕Sometimes I’ll refuse the robo call but it’s still in log that I have to clear out which is a pain. Some robos are creepy, 👹and most are annoying just because when you get a call even if you dismiss it. I get people need to fundraise and if you don’t ask you won’t get. 💵 I sometimes will send some group a few bucks but that doesn’t mean I will give again right away. Usually I give to local groups but occasionally I’ll give to a national group if I’m interested in a particular campaign they are advocating in. I don’t get into politics and rarely if ever contribute to political campaigns.

By conserving money of the past month I think finances have improved this April 💸 but I still have my my credit card bill 💳 to pay and state tax bill to pay mid month. With the quarterly payments next year hopefully my state taxes won’t be so bad next year. The feds over withhold enough I don’t have to worry there. Once I start traveling and camping more ⛺ expenses will increase but I expect to remain within my budget going forward. The solar helps save fuel at camp and I’m trying to walk and do more things closer to camp, especially now that I have the solar to top off things.
