You’ve lost a lot of weight the random person on the street says

I tell you those are fighting words. The guy warns he lost a lot of weight only to put it back on. And asks how much I’ve lost. Truth is I don’t know, I don’t have a scale and only have a vague idea from my online medical records. I’ve been focused on nutrition and eating healthy whole foods not counting calories or limiting portions and walking.

Good morning! Happy Smokey Thursday. Mostly cloudy and 60 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a west breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 58 degrees. The air quality index has fallen to 83 due to wildfire smoke, it’s worse out in Western NY and expected to decline through the day. The skies will clear around 10 am. I guess it depends on the smoke.

Black beans are cooking down on the stove this morning ๐Ÿฒ for some good cool lunches and dinners in the coming days. They’re great with some good chopped red onions ๐Ÿง… and maybe peppers ๐Ÿซ‘๐ŸŒถ๏ธ. Especially with warmer weather ahead and I’m getting tired or the rice, peas and lentils even if I’m mixing them up with other ingredients. Cooking now, I plan to have them for lunch.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 81 degrees at 6pm. Assuming we can see the sun through the smoke. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 23rd. Maximum dew point of 62 at 11am. Northwest wind around 6 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 85 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1944.

Walked ๐Ÿšถ 11 ¼ miles yesterday including doing the stairs to the 18th floor both ways at work twice. It’s great cardio and avoids the risk of getting trapped in the elevator again. I’m not really afraid ๐Ÿ˜จ of elevators, I’m sure if I got stuck they’d send a technician quickly. I just like feeling good.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:59 pm with sun having an altitude of 70.6° from the due south horizon (-0.2° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.1 foot shadow today at solar noon. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:55 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (296°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (303°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:38 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 27 seconds with dusk around 9:12 pm, which is 3 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the south (172°) at an altitude of 26° from the horizon, 237,068 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:58 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 76 degrees. The dew point will be 63 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 15 hours and 20 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 31 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ , with a low of 59 degrees at 6am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 22nd. Maximum dew point of 63 at 8pm. Light and variable wind. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 56 degrees. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1938.

On this day in 2006, in Hamdan v. Rumsfeld the U.S. Supreme Court rules that President George W. Bush’s plan to try Guantanamo Bay detainees in military tribunals violates U.S. and international law. โš– Seems like ancient history now.

Has the Independence Day weekend improved? ๐ŸŒฅ Still looks fairly cloudy with potential smoke and air quality issues. Saturday, a chance of showers, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 83. South wind 9 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 66 at 12pm. Monday, a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 83. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Independence Day, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 83. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees.

Some models seem more positive for the weekend, ๐Ÿ˜€ and I will decide on Friday night if I am going to head out of town. I probably won’t leave until mid-day Saturday if I decide to head out of town as I want to look at bicycles. ๐Ÿšฒ I might have something to do the following weekend, and this is a four day weekend, ๐Ÿ• plus I want to get sparklers, so this would be a good weekend to get out of town. ๐ŸŽ†

Looking ahead, there are 3 weeks until Ugly Truck Day ๐Ÿšš when the sun will be setting at 8:29 pm with dusk at 9:01 pm. On that day in 2022, we had hot, humid, mostly sunny, thunderstorm and temperatures between 97 and 72 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 84 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1991.

Early Morning On Jessup River Road

As they say, it’s a wash โ˜”

At least if you go outside this morning you’ll get washed. Needless to say I’m taking the early express downtown and walking laps on the Concourse before catching the shuttle to the suburbanite office with acres of parking.

Good morning! What day is it? A Rainy Day, of course. Rain and 40 degrees at the Stewart’s. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ There is a southeast breeze at 11 mph. ๐Ÿƒ with gusts up to 21 mph ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Monday around 3 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

So it’s back to walking ๐Ÿšถ the Plaza for an hour before work. I wonder how many buckets they’ll have out catching leaks from the roof. Even a two billion dollar building leaks. Still beats walking in the rain. Eggs ๐Ÿฅš for breakfast with sweet onions ๐Ÿง… and Chipotle spices. I hear bird flu is back ๐Ÿฅ so my favorite source of cheap healthy quick to cook protein is going up in price, like everything in this world today. Paying back for the good times of the pandemic.

Today will rain. ๐ŸŒง High of 40 degrees at 7am. 13 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 2nd. East wind 11 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 79 was set in 1981. 11.0 inches of snow fell back in 1891.โ„

The salmon was good last night ๐ŸŸ, haven’t had that in a while. It’s good to have some more omega 3s. Not as easy to cook as canned sardines or tuna but it’s good to mix thlngs up. That second loaf ๐Ÿž of bread I made up on Sunday night was exceptionally tasty. Read ๐Ÿ“– for a while and went to bed ๐Ÿ› around 8 pm. Just working my way through another week. ๐Ÿ‘ฃ One step at a time. I wish it wasn’t raining so I could ride to work more of the week.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:59 pm with sun having an altitude of 52.9ยฐ from the due south horizon (-17.9ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:47 pm with the sun in the west (272ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (278ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:24 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 55 seconds with dusk around 7:52 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:27 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 38 degrees. There will be a east breeze at 14 mph with gusts up to 26mph. Today will have 12 hours and 54 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over yesterday.

After filing my taxes ๐Ÿ’ฐ I was reviewing them and realized that I had made a mistake again on my state forms and swapped a number and will overpay the state by $400. It’s fine, I budgeted $1,600 for taxes as I knew that’s what I would owe due to the dividends and interest due to the higher interest rates. Sucks but I did fairly well with the higher rates last year. So either the tax department will catch my mistake or I’ll file an admemded return later in the year to get my money back.

Tonight will rain, snow, and sleet before 4am, then rain between 4am and 5am, then rain and snow after 5am. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Low of 35 degrees at 10pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 7th. Northeast wind 10 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2023, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 45 degrees. The record low of 14 occurred back in 1954.

I was tracing out some code at work yesterday , ๐Ÿ–ฅ it was just insane. If you were at a certain zip code on a certain street in Westchester, you raise flag ๐Ÿšฉ number 31. Then you shift several digits to a buffer and then other digits from another field and combine it with data from another buffer. It was absolutely insane but after studying it for a half hour I realized it was doing. But much like life, data is messy and often complicated to clean up. But goddammit, use comments in your source code to explain the madness. ๐Ÿคฌ The one upside is I am getting good at reading and writing C code. I might not be a programmer ๐Ÿค“ but I’m putting my skills to good work.

Cool but with improving conditions this weekend. ๐ŸŒค๏ธSaturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 45. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 52. Typical average high for the weekend is 55 degrees. Staying in town this weekend but who knows about future ๐Ÿ”ฎ weekends. I am thinking I might do the Green Mountains more this year as some ways it’s more convenient from my office. Also thinking about one more trip to the East Branch Sacandaga River before the black flies are out should it warm up this spring. ๐ŸŒธ

Looking ahead, next Wednesday is 8 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 7:33 pm. On that day in 2023, we had sunny and temperatures between 67 and 30 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 57 degrees. We hit a record high of 86 back in 1922.

South East as Skies Clear

Tuesday, Tuesday. ๐ŸŒ„

Rise and grind on this second day of the week. Started my morning with Johnny cakes with spinach and broccoli and old bay seasoning, I guess to celebrate the collapse of the Baltimore bridge, or I wasn’t feeling like pancakes despite having some cherries and bananas rolled in oats as a side.

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Mostly sunny and 24 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. โ˜€๏ธA cold start to the morning. There are 3 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Melting quickly though, by tomorrow’s rain it will be gone at least locally. ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at around 8 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

I guess I’ll be riding in this morning. ๐Ÿšฒ I’m going to try to do the rail trail, it’s better than Corning’s Hill and the rough as duck ๐Ÿฆ† South Pearl Street. Depending on how much snow is left on the bike path I’ll try to ride home too, but last night I ended up catching the express bus ๐Ÿš from the old train station downtown. โš™ Adjusted the gears on my bike, went for an evening walk and did some reading ๐Ÿ“– last night. Got another e- audio book from the Libby app to listen to on my ride to work. ๐Ÿ”Š Waiting for the next, part of Power Broker to be available, in the meantime I’m listening to Ralph Naders new book on CEOs who did the right thing.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 46 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 19th. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 56 degrees. The record high of 75 was set in 2021. 6.1 inches of snow fell back in 1899.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 49.8ยฐ from the due south horizon (-21ยฐ vs. 6/21). The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:38 pm with the sun in the west (268ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (274ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:15 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:43 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:17 pm. At sunset, look for potential rain showers ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 42 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 6 mph. Tomorrow will have 12 hours and 33 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 53 seconds over today.

Tonight will have a slight chance of sprinkles before 8pm, then a chance of showers after 10pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 37 degrees at 2am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 15th. Southeast wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. In 2023, we had clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 27 degrees. The record low of 78 occurred back in 1998.

It looks like now the heat can be off until October or November โ™จ๏ธ though maybe not quite warm enough for the windows open. I’m also not ready to put away the electric blanket but I’m using it less and less these days.

Easter Weekend still looks outstanding. ๐Ÿฐ Good Friday, mostly sunny, with a high near 49. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 49. Easter, mostly sunny, with a high near 48. Typical average high for the weekend is 51 degrees. A little bit below normal. But I’m looking forward to getting out of town. ๐ŸŒฒ

There are 2 weeks until 7:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ with dusk at 7:59 pm. On that day in 2023, we had sunny and temperatures between 55 and 29 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 56 degrees. We hit a record high of 77 back in 1991.

Snow Melt Coming Down the Mountain

To ride or not to ride to work today ๐Ÿšดโ€โ™€๏ธ ๐Ÿ”๏ธ

I think I already know the answer to that question, as much as I might not love the idea of riding South Pearl Street with the rough pavement, as I am sure there is still too much snow on the rail trail. Got to watch out for the black ice but I assume the bike trail and alike will be plowed in the city, just not down through the gorge. At any rate, Corning Hill is kind of a blast on the bike.

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Sunny and 29 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž Calm wind. There are 4 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธ Alas that’s the only thing giving me pause, as I doubt I can do the rail trail. But by evening the rail trail might be passable, or certainly by tomorrow. Wednesday might rain, and Thursday I might drive in if I plan to head to the Adirondacks after work, assuming I get Good Friday off. โœ๏ธ

So it’s the week leading up to Easter Weekend. ๐Ÿ‡ I am still hoping to have Good Friday off. That said, Thursday looks a bit wet ๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ so maybe I won’t head north until early on Good Friday. I am determined to get bacon ๐Ÿฅ“ at For the Love of Bacon, as while it’s not something I’d eat regularly it’s such a wonderful treat. ๐Ÿ– And your supporting local agriculture while getting a product made out of simple ingredients. I’m not a bacon and eggs each morning kind of person — but a little bit of bacon and bacon grease as a treat spread over a few weeks or months is wonderful. Lard is kind of a wonderful thing. ๐Ÿซƒ  I should bring a snow shovel and salt though if heading up north, as there is a chance I’ll need it. But at least fire danger should be relatively low  ๐Ÿ”ฅ for my mostly DEC compliant 3-foot campfire. I should bring a ruler ๐Ÿ“ to measure it, and not burn it, lol. ๐Ÿ˜ธ I just don’t like when people burn pallets and leave nails out for people to run over with their 35-inch tires. ๐Ÿ›ž Plastic, I don’t care as long as I don’t have to smell it and it fully burns up or is packed out. ๐Ÿ‘ƒ

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 46 degrees at 4pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 19th. Light and variable wind becoming east around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning, which became light drizzle by afternoon. The high last year was 41 degrees. The record high of 74 was set in 1910. 1.9 inches of snow fell back in 1960.โ„

Yesterday I hiked Bennett Hill ๐Ÿšถ‍โ™‚๏ธ after the ice storm.  ๐Ÿ”Œ The power was back on by the time I got back from my folks house, I’m glad about that as otherwise it would have been a very cold and dark night. Didn’t help that I had left the heat at 48 degrees the night before, so things really dropped after the heat quit working at 1 AM the previous night. I was a bit worried about pipes freezing, though that has yet to happen even in the coldest weather, though I do remember them being a bit frozen after the 2009 Ice Storm when I lost power for three days. ๐ŸŒž And despite all the sunshine, it still was dark in my bathroom without windows, though what I ended up doing was drawing the blinds and leaving the bathroom door. Still I was super cranky about losing power, again for the second time in like two weeks.

Then I went out to my parents house for Sunday dinner of riggies ๐Ÿ, which is far more white pasta then I normally eat but it’s nice to have them as a treat while my family is still around. ๐Ÿ‘ช๏ธ I talk about how close I am to early retirement in 13 years, 10 months and 4 days, and for people who are older that seems like a lifetime — at least a remaining lifetime. But I do agree I really should be spending a least some of that time exploring America. If I want to move out (mid) west, I should explore it first.  ๐Ÿ›ป If it means boarding a plane โœˆ๏ธ and renting a car ๐Ÿค‘ and spending some money, then so be it. Then later in the evening, I went for an evening walk.  ๐Ÿšฒ๏ธ Never got test my adjustments to the bicycle gears  โš™๏ธ over the weekend, but I’m sure it will be good enough and I can tweak tonight. Probably won’t be riding home but will catch the bus home due to snow/ice remaining on the bike trail.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 49.4° from the due south horizon (-21.4° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:37 pm with the sun in the west (267°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (274°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:14 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:42 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:16 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 41 degrees. There will be a east breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 28 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 55 seconds over yesterday.

This evening after I get home I’ll probably have a quick dinner of sweet potato  ๐Ÿฅ” and some fried veggies, ๐Ÿง… and then go for evening walk before doing some reading ๐Ÿ“š๏ธ using that Libby app on my phone. I like E-Books whenever they’re available as it avoids a trip to the library, plus I don’t have to worry about getting the books wet and dirty, and I can bring them under the covers in my bed, which is good with the heated blanket, as especially once we get past today. I plan to read e-books exclusively when I head out of town this weekend — I’ll have to make sure the ones I have are downloaded to my phone.๐Ÿ“ฑ Unfortunately my phone is starting to fall apart, so I may have to think about replacing it soon.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 26 degrees at 4am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 17th. East wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. In 2023, we had light drizzle in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 31 degrees. The record low of 0 occurred back in 1885.

Spoke to my neighbor about the garbage pile  ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ last week and he still hasn’t done anything to address it. He said he was holding it to take to his parent’s dumpster but had forgotten about it. I just don’t like how animals have gotten into it and I’m finding litter now. I wouldn’t care if he had secure garbage cans.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž The only real question in my mind will I get off Good Friday. And can I leave early on Thursday? For Good Friday Eve, a chance of showers before 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 34. Chance of precipitation is 40%. For Good Friday, partly sunny, with a high near 48. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 49. Easter, partly sunny, with a high near 47. Typical average high for the weekend is 51 degrees. That sounds like a winner, though it only can slide downhill from here. Not as warm in Adirondacks, but I’ll take that weather for late March.

As previously noted, next Monday is April Fools Day ๐Ÿคก when the sun will be setting at 7:23 pm with dusk at 7:50 pm. On that day in 2023, we had rain and temperatures between 74 and 41 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 52 degrees. We hit a record high of 77 back in 1986.

Blackhead from Acra Point

A dark shower with no bread baking this morning ๐Ÿž๐Ÿšฟ

I went to bed early last night noting the ice we were getting and not wanting to deal with the risk of losing power. The power did go out and is still out so I’m shaving and showering in the dark this morning. Fortunately it’s going to warm up by midday though most of the coming week will be a bit below average.

Good morning! Happy Palm Sunday. Sunny and 19 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž ๐ŸŒด I bet a lot of church halls are cold and not very well lit this morning โ›ช though the sunlight through the stain glass must be beautiful. There is a north breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is 5. There are 5 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at around noontime. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

I am a bit surprised how much snow ๐ŸŒจ and ice I we got as I was thinking this would be just a wet rainy โ˜” Saturday. Actually the bulk of the day was just heavy rain but then around 4 pm the ground temperature dropped and it turned to ice then snow. For a while the tree branches were quite ice covered and things were quite pretty.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 39 degrees at 4pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 27th. North wind 6 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 51 degrees. The record high of 69 was set in 1976. 5.5 inches of snow fell back in 1956.โ„

Laying in bed ๐Ÿ› not rushing this morning, because I don’t have coffee โ˜• because my stove isn’t working nor do I have any way to cook breakfast ๐Ÿณ without power. I figure the more light โ˜€ with the sun in the sky the better for showering and shaving. ๐Ÿšฟ๐Ÿช’ I am not sure if they even have power ๐Ÿ”Œ at the grocery store ๐Ÿฌ so I’m thinking they may be closed though these days they probably have emergency generators. ๐Ÿ›ป Plus I got to scrape all that ice and snow off my truck.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 49ยฐ from the due south horizon (-21.8ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 33 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 25 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 16 degrees at 6am. 13 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 10th. Northwest wind around 6 mph. In 2023, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 29 degrees. The record low of 0 occurred back in 1875.

Looking ahead, there are 2 weeks until 7:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ with dusk at 7:57 pm. On that day in 2023, we had mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 48 and 34 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 55 degrees. We hit a record high of 87 back in 2010.

Albany

Just kind of a wet, damp miserable day ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

A good day for staying home, doing some reading and some cleaning. Maybe some thinking and writing about where I am currently, now that’s I’ve put my house and land search on ice, I’d say suspended it but I’m still going to keep learning, will keep my eye on Landwatch and Zillow and keep my options but I think my preferred option is now focused on early retirement.

Good afternoon! Started out as snow, turned to rain, and now looks like it’s more freezing rain and 32 degrees here in Delmar. ๐ŸŒง๏ธThere is a north breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThe skies will clear tomorrow around noontime.

I honestly thought it was just going to be a rain event locally. ๐ŸŒจ๏ธ I was wrong. It’s really much more of a mixed bag, a lot of slop locally but now I’m watching the trees ice up. They’re getting a fair bit of snow up north, but I think with the warmer temperatures next week, maybe some will be left up north prior to camping but it won’t be a major hindrance as most should melt this weekend. ๐Ÿ•๏ธ I confirmed that For the Love of Bacon is going to be open on Good Friday, so I can get bacon ๐Ÿฅ“ prior to camping. Yum. ๐Ÿ– I won’t buy store bought bacon but as an occasional treat, farm bacon is great.

This afternoon will rain or freezing rain before 3pm, then rain and sleet between 3pm and 4pm, then rain, snow, and sleet after 4pm. High of 35 degrees at 2pm. 13 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 13th. North wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime ice accumulation of 0.3 to 0.5 of an inch possible. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of less than one inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 56 degrees. The record high of 80 was set in 1938. 6.1 inches of snow fell back in 2020.โ„

Thursday knocked my derailleur badly out of alignment fighting the wind heading home, didn’t discover until Friday commute. ๐Ÿšฒ Couldn’t even get it into high. Ended up driving in on Friday but it’s fine as I brought in a better desk lamp and one of my re-potted plants. Had a root rot issue or maybe over fertilization. ๐Ÿฅ€ Wasn’t a difficult adjustment, took five minutes with a hex key but I didn’t have time on Friday to adjust. When the rain stops I’ll take for a test ride to verify. I ended up getting an inexpensive stick lamp for my desk at work ๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ because the lamp shade on the old lamp I found in the closet was falling apart. Lamp shades were close to same price, plus that old lamp I found in closet kind of was on it’s last legs. This new lamp is super bright with the 200-watt LED bulb, and the not aged-plastic on the lamp shade.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:03 pm with sun having an altitude of 48.6ยฐ from the due south horizon (-22.2ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:35 pm with the sun in the west (266ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (273ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:12 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:39 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the east (100ยฐ) at an altitude of 20ยฐ from the horizon, 252,272 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:13 pm. At sunset, look for snow and freezing rain ๐ŸŒจ and temperatures around 35 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 14 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 22 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over yesterday.

At one point I had more ambitious plans for today, ๐Ÿงน but I really should spend time cleaning in my apartment, especially the bathroom. And I want to do some reading, this time not about real estate, building a house or land. ๐Ÿ ๏ธ It was fine when I was doing it, but it became a bit overwhelming to say the least. I’m not going to stop learning, but it’s not going to be primary focus now that I’ve moved that goal into my retirement years when I can have lots of land and in live in a state that shares my values. ๐Ÿงญ I wanted to make New York work, but I just don’t see the state’s values as being consistent with my own.

This afternoon I am thinking if the library opens I’ll go down there for a while to get on the internet, ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ and maybe drop off my Early Voting Ballot to the Early Voting site. Totally voted for Dean Phillips, as I think we need new blood in government, ๐Ÿซ€ even if the 79-year old Joe Biden has nomination locked up. If I don’t get it done today, ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ I can do that tomorrow when I run to the grocery store for my weekly shop already — can you believe tomorrow is already Sunday? ๐Ÿ›’I am thinking Thursday I may take half a day off from work and head up to Adirondacks before rush hour ๐Ÿš— , although if the weather is bad, I think I’d be better off to go up early on Good Friday, maybe doing a hike in the morning. ๐Ÿ•๏ธ

Tonight will snow, mainly before 8pm. ๐ŸŒจ Low of 21 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 29th. Northwest wind around 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2023, we had light rain in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 34 degrees. The record low of 0 occurred back in 1875.

Looking ahead, there are 5 weeks until Arbor Day ๐ŸŒณ when the sun will be setting at 7:52 pm with dusk at 8:21 pm. On that day in 2023, we had partly cloudy, patches of fog and temperatures between 62 and 40 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 65 degrees. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1962.

Pretty morning today

Going to be a beautiful Saturday for a drive out in Rensselaer County ๐Ÿ›ป

Get your motor running, head out on the highway, looking for adventure and whatever comes my way.

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Going to be a beautiful start to the weekend for doing some driving around. Partly cloudy and 39 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… There is a west-northwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Monday around 2 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ I do wish I could go out camping, but things are going to be muddy after the rain, plus I’m thinking a week from next Thursday of heading up to the Adirondacks for a three-day weekend, assuming they don’t get a shit ton of snow up north in the meantime or it’s pouring rain all Easter weekend. ๐Ÿ‡

Things are going better since I’ve been doing more research ๐Ÿ›– on housing options, and realizing I have to be more flexible on my thinking — even if it means a longer commute then is ideal to live rural. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐ŸŒพSpending a lot of money on gas โ›ฝ๏ธ and burning through cars ๐Ÿš— every 8-10 years ain’t fun, but I may have to push closer to 35 mile commute rather then the less 30 mile commute I was going for. The thing is in 8 years from my next car purchase in 2025, I’ll have built up my solar system and there will be far more options for electric vehicles. ๐Ÿ”Œ I really like some of the options for modular cabins, especially the smaller ones built to code for residential use at a factory and delivered to the site with full interior built. Right now I’m quite enthralled by the Zook Settler and similar style small-one floor code-compliant pre-built residential cabins. I am thinking one floor, no basement, smallest size for a smallest possible electrical and heating demand. I like the wood-walls, that won’t sure the dirt like drywall, and the metal roof for fire safety and insurance savings, lest an ember fall on the roof.

Then get an EPA-certified, efficient wood stove and a small heat pump and use one of the bedrooms as a mechanical room — for batteries, split-phase inverter, well pressure tank, and maybe eventually a washing machine and computer equipment. ๐Ÿ”‹ If I get serious about the map making business, I might eventually get an used plotter. I am thinking the heat pump can be used when I’m not there to keep things from freezing in winter. โ™จ๏ธ Wouldn’t run much though, as I’d keep the temperature low on the heat pump in the winter, ๐ŸŒจ๏ธ and the thing is a cabin built to 2018 federal energy standards, as required by NY State, passing blower efficiency tests, ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธis going to have minimal heat loss. I am going to need a quality gasoline generator like a Honda, which will have remote start, which can be triggered off inverter on low battery, which can keep things from freezing up in winter if I’m away for an extended time. Plus as much as I personally loathe air conditioning, the climate is warming ๐ŸŒŽ๏ธ and it sure would be nice to come home to on that sultry summer nights, especially when the batteries are full and it makes sense to be keeping the cabin cold rather then wasting the solar energy. ๐ŸงŠ Use a standard electric refrigerator and probably a gas stove converted to use propane — and in winter, sometimes use the wood stove to atop. If I’m only using propane for the stove, I can get away with 30 lb propane tanks, that I can throw in the pickup and get filled at any propane retailer rather then paying a big truck to come out there and be dependent on one supplier. That said, it’s going to be a lot of money, but I’ve saved for a long time, done well in the markets. What I’m building is far smaller then your typical suburban home and will consume far less energy, especially fossil energy.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 54 degrees at 5pm. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 5th. West wind 5 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 51 degrees. The record high of 82 was set in 1990. 13.4 inches of snow fell back in 1956.โ„

At any rate, that’s all fun and games, ๐Ÿ•น๏ธ though first I have to find land that I love โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿ”ฅand is a good fit for me. The commute thing sucks, but I want to find a place that feels like and will be my home for the rest of my life.ย  ๐Ÿš— I am exploring Rensselaer County today, not because that’s necessarily where I will move, as I’m biased towards the Hilltowns of Albany County, but as far as birds eye distance goesย  ๐Ÿฆœ there’s more remote country, closer to work then in the Hilltowns, being that work in Menands. ๐Ÿ The roads kind of suck and traffic in Rensselaer County, (Hoosick Street and NY 7) but as a property owner, the conservative politics of land of Joe Bruno would suit me well. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ What’s good for my business, as I like to say, might not necessarily always be good for myself. Not only do I want to look at a list of parcels I’ve seen listed in Hoosick Falls, Petersburg and Grafton, I also want to explore some of Petersburg State Forest for mountain biking, hiking and camping ๐Ÿ•๏ธ ๐Ÿฅพ in the future. It’s fun to drive the back roads.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:05 pm with sun having an altitude of 45.9ยฐ from the due south horizon (-25ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:26 pm with the sun in the west (263ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (269ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:04 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 53 seconds with dusk around 7:31 pm, which is one minute and 10 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the southwest (215ยฐ) at an altitude of 73ยฐ from the horizon, 239,018 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:05 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 50 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 12 hours and 4 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over today.

For the Easter weekend, ๐Ÿฐ as I was noting, I really want to get out of town to go to the Adirondacks. The burn ban doesn’t apply to small campfires, and I don’t think it’s going to be bone dry up north at that point based on the forecast. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Plus I really want a good fire to help myself sleep betterย  ๐Ÿ›Œ and burn up some of the accumulated papers. I have nothing but disdain for the burn ban, but I understand the fire risk this time of year, as I know how easy it can be set your yard on fire, and as a future property owner I don’t want that to happen. ๐Ÿ˜๏ธ You can say what you want about New York State, but it pays my bills and it’s my home. Building standards mean I will end up with a quality, energy efficient building even if I have my views on the gun laws and open burning restrictions. Happy March 16th.

Tonight will have showers, mainly after 2am. ๐ŸŒง Low of 41 degrees at 6am. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 22nd. Light southeast wind becoming south 6 to 11 mph in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2023, we had partly cloudy skies. It got down to 32 degrees. The record low of -1 occurred back in 1916.

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now will be Average High is 60 ๐ŸŒท when the sun will be setting at 7:40 pm with dusk at 8:08 pm.
