Well that was an epic poop to close out the month ๐Ÿ’ฉ

As they say, it’s best not to bring your shit into the new month. All that fiber in one’s diet plus coffee can really make a good log that requires a plunger to flush down the toilet.

Good morning! January is almost done. Cloudy and 30 degrees at the Elm Ave Park and Ride. โ˜๏ธ There is a south breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There are 3 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at around 9 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Bathroom ๐Ÿšฝ humor beyond me, I’m catching the express bus ๐Ÿš downtown. Another busy day ahead. I went out for an early morning bike ride and had johnny cakes for breakfast ๐Ÿฅž with lots of spinach and peppers topped with cottage cheese. It’s busy learning so much in my new position. ๐Ÿ–ฅ Probably I’ve been watching too much Brappie on YouTube lately. Silly cannuck redneck shit. That said, eating lots of fiber is essential for healthy living.

Today will have some scattered flurries before 9am. Mostly cloudy โ˜ƒ๏ธ , with a high of 38 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 21st. South wind around 6 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 30 degrees. The record high of 58 was set in 1913. 6.9 inches of snow fell back in 2000.โ„

Wasn’t a half bad morning for the ride. ๐Ÿšฒ With the clouds a bit dark but not terrible. Tomorrow I’ll probably ride my bike to work. The rail trail looks like it’s mostly clear of snow ๐ŸŒจ and I don’t have to dress up for work tomorrow. Friday also looks like I’m likely going to be able to ride in to work. โ˜บ That puts a smile on my face.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:09 pm with sun having an altitude of 29.9ยฐ from the due south horizon (-40.9ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 10.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:25 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (240ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (247ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:07 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 10 seconds with dusk around 5:36 pm, which is one minute and 18 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:11 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 35 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 59 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 17 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 27 degrees at 1am. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 18th. South wind 3 to 5 mph. In 2023, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 12 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1920.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, sunny, with a high near 37. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 36. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Valentines Day โค๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 5:26 pm with dusk at 5:54 pm. On that day in 2023, we had partly sunny, mild and temperatures between 50 and 30 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 36 degrees. We hit a record high of 63 back in 1946.

What Do I Need for a Night in the Wilderness.

Back when I was in Boy Scouts when we did backpacking, we did often did with about fifty pounds on our backs, and honestly it wasn’t a lot of fun. When I start doing some wilderness camping myself this summer, I want to pack as little as possible, but have the supplies to camp in relative comfort.

  1. Camping hammock – A camping hammock provides a comfortable place to sleep, without having to bring a sleeping pad or tent.
  2. Bug Net and bug spray – I need to get a bug net to use over my camping hammock. This is especially critical during black fly season but throughout the year, mosquito could be obnoxious while sleeping in the wilderness, especially near a lake.
  3. Two or three cigarette lighters – Lighters are important for starting fires, which will provide light, warmth, and a way to cook without bringing a camp-stove back in wilderness.
  4. Trowel – For burying poop, digging out a fire pit,
  5. Rope – For hanging the bear bag, hanging up the tarp.
  6. Water – Sufficent water for hiking, plus at night at camp.
  7. Small pot and frying pan – For boiling water if necessary, cooking on the fire.
  8. Old cloth bag – For storing food in a bear bag.
  9. Map and compass – For navigating. I rarely use a compass, but if I were to get off a trail, I could use it to navigate back onto the trail.
  10. Two or three flashlights – Flashlights break. Batteries go dead. I want to make sure I have light at night in the wilderness.
  11. Camera – For making videos and taking photos of what I’ve seen.
  12. Cellphone – For entertainment, journaling, listening to music and podcast. Might be handy in emergencies, and it’s fun to check out my exact location on the GPS, when I can find a land mark to orient myself on the trail
  13. Additional Battery Pack – To charge my phone at night, so I can have all night entertainment, music, podcasts, journal.
  14. Extra socks, pair of underwear and t-shirt. Wet clothes can be miserable. While I doubt I would need a full change of clothes, I think having a pair of socks, underwear, t-shirt is a good thing.
  15. Toilet paper – Self explanatory, it cleans up better than leaves. I’d burn it, rather then let it become litter, even if it’s burried.
  16. Small first aid kit – Just some bandages, wet wipers in small plastic bag.
  17. Multi-function Knife – For anything I’d need to cut at camp. Maybe also a bigger knife, especially during hunting season
  18. Candles – To provide additional light at camp.
  19. Flags – American flag and Don’t Tread on Me flag for decoration.

Food and meals … I want to keep things as light and simple as possible, not requiring much cooking.

  1. Water – Few things are as critical as having sufficient clean water to drink. I would probably add a shot of cider vinegar to get rid of that nasty off-taste that water sometimes has locally from the minerals.
  2. Frozen Hot Dogs, Beans/Canned Veggies or Soup – Something lightweight that wouldn’t require a lot of wait. Ideally, I’d avoid canned goods, that require the can to be carried out at the end of the trip.
  3. Cookies – Calories for energy, that are tasty for a dessert.
  4. Oatmeal – For breakfast, that is quick and easy. I could boil water for that. I probably would skip coffee for breakfast.

A few other things I might want to think about bringing …

  1. Small Tarp – While I probably wouldn’t back country in rain, it might be handy for a pop up thunderstorm.
  2. Beer – I might bring a can or two of beer to enjoy by the fire at night.
  3. Fishing pole/night crawlers/few bobbers/hooks – For fishing during the summer months to pass time, additional source of food. Not going to bring my full fishing kit. Place in small plastic bags.
  4. .22 rifle – During small game season for harvesting squirrel or rabbit. I would put it on a sling and care over the shoulder.

My goal is simple: have things that can be carried in a small, lightweight backpack that would make exploring the wilderness fun, not too bogged down.

Rain is starting to clear on this start to the Martin Luther King Weekend ๐ŸŒฆ

After much of the summer having rainy Sundays, this winter seems to be dominated by rainy Saturdays. And it will get cold come tomorrow, for an extended time period, though that’s somewhat to be expected this time of January. I bet by my birthday at the end of the month things will start to warm up again. Maybe that’s when I take that left-over carrot cake in my freezer and camp then. Who knows!

Good morning! Rain and 48 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒง There is a south-southeast breeze at 14 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 9 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

I slept in until 5:30 AM this morning โฐ which was late for me, and I was in bed by 8 PM but I think the net result was I got a good night’s sleep. Probably was the excessive amount of sugar ๐Ÿฐ I had yesterday. I didn’t want any parties, but they still threw me two different parties for my going away at work. One of them had carrot cake ๐Ÿฅ• and yes it was super sweet, as I no longer normally eat sugar. ๐Ÿญ ๐Ÿ˜‹ I was pretty wound up for the rest of the day, and I wish I ad been able to ride to work ๐Ÿšฒ to burn calories but that was not to be due to that loose bolt. I did have a nice walk last night. ๐Ÿšถ‍โ™€๏ธI like yellow foods, note my obsession with turmeric, ๐Ÿ’› only followed by obsession with oranges, e.g. carrots and citrus like oranges and grape fruit. ๐Ÿฅ• But then again, Red is kind of my favorite color, โค๏ธ witness my big jacked up truck. ๐Ÿ›ป It’s not like I don’t love smoked paprika and red peppers especially when good and sweet too. And then dark orange, which is another word for brown, ๐Ÿ’ฉ which I do poop a lot with my fiber rich diet. ๐Ÿคฃ

Breakfast was onions, eggs, some spinach, canned tomato with some milled corn mixed in. ๐Ÿณ The result was pretty good, though I wish I had more fiber ๐Ÿ’š but by this morning my pantry was pretty bare. ๐Ÿฅซ I like carbs a bit too much, but at least I always try to include lots of fiber with my carbs, and almost always whole-wheat carbs. First this this morning after showering ๐Ÿšฟ and breakfast I went to Hannaford. I don’t love shopping there, they have a small spice selection, and while their produce selection is higher quality it’s also more expensive. But with coupons ๐ŸŽซ I was able to knock $35 off of a $121 shopping bill, which got it down to $86. ๐Ÿ’ธ Still things are more expensive then Walmart and of course I had to settle for regular plain yogurt, as they didn’t have non-fat Greek yogurt. That did not make me happy, and included a few cuss words. ๐Ÿคฌ I probably should have given the full-fat yogurt a try. Some fat isn’t bad, even if it is omega-6 saturated fat, and it fills you up quicker then no-fat, or so I’m told by the dairy farmers, who want to get a better price on their milk fat. ๐Ÿคฐ Shopping is so depressing ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ›’ with inflation these days.

Got home from shopping and decided on an early lunch. ๐ŸŒ The banana I had wasn’t satisfying enough, so I decided to fry up one of those wonderful sweet onions from Hannaford along with a bunch of peas, broccoli, and some tofu with lots of turmeric and red-chili spices, plus a dash of salt and black pepper to maximize vitamin up tick. That finally got me filled up. ๐Ÿ˜‹ Now I’m feeling good. Probably still on that glycemic roller coaster ๐ŸŽข from all that sweet and wonderful carrot cake yesterday. I actually took home a quarter of that carrot cake, and promptly stuck in the freezer for some time down the road, after licking down the box. The frosting they use at Cookie Factory in Troy is just pure cane sugar and egg whites. Pretty heavenly ๐Ÿ˜‡ especially when you don’t normally eat sugar. Of course now I have a big sweet tooth again, ๐Ÿ˜ฌ but I’ll keep it filled apples, bananas, and especially that mango I got. I am so happy to have bananas again this week, last week was sad without them. The carrot cake is locked away in back of the freezer. ๐Ÿฐ

Today will rain likely before noon, then a chance of showers, mainly between noon and 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a temperature rising to near 51 by 11am, then falling to around 39 during the remainder of the day. ๐ŸŒฆ South wind 11 to 16 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 43 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1932. 13.1 inches of snow fell back in 1964.โ„

What to do today is the question on my mind. ๐Ÿ’ญ I intentionally got up and early and to the grocery store a little after 8 AM so I could shop both before the crowds ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ‘ฆ‍๐Ÿ‘ฆ ๐Ÿ›’ and so I could have the balance of my day free. Really I could see today going in three ways. Stay close to home, go to the library, ๐Ÿ“š and maybe a bike ride on the rail trail ๐Ÿšฒ. Another option would be to go to the Village of Colonie, check out clothes at the Salvation Army off of Central Avenue ๐Ÿ‘”, and then ride trail in the Pine Bush. I do get best clothes from Salvation Army, so much of the new stuff is China-made fancy-label crap. For riding trail this afternoon though, even with the sand though, the trails might be soft. But if it clears out later, might be nice to watch the sun set from Albany Pine Bush. ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ The third option would be to get my stuff together, do a night or two up in the woods, though I’m sure after all this rain things would be soft. ๐ŸŒฒ ๐Ÿ• Tomorrow everything will be frozen, and it will be sunny, but it’s going to be cold with the wind. Maybe one night in woods freezing my ass would be refreshing though if the balance of day is sunny. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:04 pm with sun having an altitude of 25.8° from the due south horizon (-45° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:00 pm with the sun in the southwest (233°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (241°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:44 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 20 seconds with dusk around 5:15 pm, which is one minute and 7 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the southwest (224°) at an altitude of 18° from the horizon, 226,726 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:51 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 42 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 15 mph with gusts up to 28mph. Today will have 9 hours and 23 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 28 seconds over yesterday.

Tuesday I finally start out my new position in earnest, ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ’ผ moving up to the office in North Albany. Looking to put my data science experience and knowledge to work at new Director of Data Services. And be the keeper of the LOL book, the list of lists, as they called them when I worked at Higher Education Services Corporation years ago. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿซ I won’t how much of the Job Control Language and COBOL I remember from back in those days. ๐Ÿ“œ I’m sure it will come back quickly, it’s sort of Unix like, and programming is ultimately just programming. COBOL is just extra verbose. And operators and programmers probably do most of that anyways.. I could drive, but I think I’ll take the express bus in then transfer to the shuttle. ๐ŸšŒ Everybody says it’s not worth the effort to transfer buses, but it really won’t impact my morning commute much, and maybe I’ll get home later on days I don’t ride my bike in, but it’s a chance to walk laps in the Empire Plaza ๐Ÿ‘ฃ or visit with people in the Capitol Complex. ๐Ÿ‘ฅ It’s important to be seen at events, and meet up with people. Honestly, in person I’m not as obnoxious as on the blog where my slogan is, “All My Heroes Burn Their Trash and Smell a Little Like Cow Shit”.

I finally learned my new salary, it is a bit less then I hoped, especially these days with inflation, but if I work hard to get the bonuses, it will be find and with next year’s inflation adjustment and step increases, it will be the nice round number I was hoping for. ๐Ÿ’ต It’s just tough with inflation, but I’m doing better then a lot of people. And I got paid early this week, so I no longer have $162 in my bank account, though come next week when the auto investing is done, it’s probably be hovering around $1,000 again. ๐Ÿ“ˆ But it’s still a good time in stock market after last year, even if this year is starting off soft. ๐Ÿฆ I do worry about some damage being caused in economy by pay-now-pay later’s exploding popularity, though I don’t think it’s likely to be as damaging as the housing crisis of 2008.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 28 degrees at 3am. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 21st. Southwest wind 11 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. In 2023, we had light snow. It got down to 26 degrees. The record low of -24 occurred back in 1957.

I’d loved to spend the night in the woods, ๐ŸŒฒ ๐ŸŒฒ and it’s not going to be super cold but that wind will be cold, as will the dampness of things after that inch of rain we got last night. Who knows my urge for camping ๐Ÿ• and having a fire up in the woods ๐Ÿ”ฅ might get the best of me and I’ll be huddled over the propane heater either tonight or tomorrow. At least there is no fire risk, even with the wind. Kind of wish there was some snow and less mud. It’s that wind that’s what will get you. ๐ŸŒฌ

Sunday will have a chance of snow showers, mainly after 9am. ๐ŸŒจ Partly sunny, with a high near 35. Breezy, with a south wind 11 to 20 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. Then Sunday night, partly cloudy, with a low around 16. West wind 10 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Going to be ducking cold. ๐Ÿฆ† And for M. L. King Day, mostly sunny, ๐Ÿ˜Ž with a high near 26. West wind 7 to 9 mph. Still rather old.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Clean Your Computer Day ๐Ÿงน when the sun will be setting at 5:21 pm with dusk at 5:49 pm. On that day in 2023, we had mostly cloudy, mild, rain showers and temperatures between 51 and 34 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 35 degrees. We hit a record high of 53 back in 1955.

Low Clouds Over the Field

Before the real cold kicks in โ„

Winter’s going to kick like a mule come next week but we’re only like 68 days away from spring and being an El Niรฑo year it’s not going to remain cold for all that long.

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Mostly cloudy at the freezing point in Delmar. โ˜ There is a west-southwest breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There are some remaining snow banks on the ground. โ˜ƒ But not for long. ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at around 7 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Cornbread this morning with onions, garlic, spinach and lots of spices.๐Ÿฅง Came out such a deep rich color and fluffy thanks to the baking soda. Do wish I had added some salt. ๐ŸŠ Then I ran a full orange, peel and all through the food processor for a fiber rich treat. ๐Ÿงก Fiber fills you up and blunts the impact of all those sugars and the inevitable insulin spike. I do poop ๐Ÿ’ฉ a lot on the morning especially after all that coffee โ˜• rich with cinnamon and ginger.

Today will have a slight chance of rain and snow showers after 1pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 38 degrees at 2pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 21st. West wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 33 degrees. The record high of 67 was set in 2020. 8.0 inches of snow fell back in 1922.โ„

Riding to work again today, ๐Ÿšฒ this time taking my preferred route through the Norman’s Kill Gorge as the snow and ice should be mostly gone. โ˜บ I really don’t love riding Delaware, I’d much rather do the rail trail. That said not sure how much I’ll be riding next week, going to be cold plus Tuesday and Wednesday are session days. Do think it’s likely I’ll be finally moving out to the burbs for work but I have a schedule ready for the shuttle ๐Ÿš€. Okay, maybe not that kind of shuttle. I don’t think the cold will be that prolonged being an El Niรฑo year, or so I tell myself.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:04 pm with sun having an altitude of 25.5ยฐ from the due south horizon (-45.3ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:58 pm with the sun in the southwest (233ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (241ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:42 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 21 seconds with dusk around 5:13 pm, which is one minute and 5 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:49 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and snow ๐ŸŒจ and temperatures around 38 degrees. There will be a south-southwest breeze at 6 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 22 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 27 seconds over today.

Yesterday on my way out ran into the landlord and we got chatting ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ and guess what I forgot to lock ๐Ÿ”’ my door ๐Ÿšช or even shut it tightly. It was a mild day and the heat probably didn’t kick on, and it’s not like I have much worth stealing. ๐Ÿ‘ฎ Today I’ll be more careful. Going to try to leave a bit earlier today so I’m not as rushed plus I have a morning meeting to get down to. ๐Ÿ‘ฅ

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers before 10pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 27 degrees at 4am. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 18th. South wind around 6 mph becoming west after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2023, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 32 degrees. The record low of -26 occurred back in 1968.

15 bean soup ๐Ÿฒ last night was delicious ๐Ÿ˜‹ though it made the last of my carrots ๐Ÿฅ• dissappear and a lot of spinach and celery. I should have bought the five pound bag of carrots last week. Rye bread with lots of red onions in it for a rich flavor. Then a shredded apple run through the food processor with lots of cinnamon and ginger with a touch of peanut ๐Ÿฅœ butter powder after my evening walk. Not quite a slurry, I mean smoothie but good. Not so cold for the evening walk. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Rained on the bus ๐Ÿš ride home but stopped by the time I was filled up with that delicious soup and bread. I was in bed ๐Ÿ› by eight and up by five this morning.

Weekend continues to look rainy after first then get cold. ๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ๐Ÿคœ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ๐Ÿคœ๐ŸงŠSaturday, rain before noon, then showers likely, mainly between noon and 1pm. High near 48. Southeast wind 14 to 17 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Sunday, a chance of snow showers after 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 32. Breezy. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees. I’m still thinking about at least one night up in the woods but I concede with the wind, going to be a cold weekend.

Looking ahead, next Thursday is Winnie the Pooh Day ๐Ÿฏ when the sun will be setting at 4:51 pm with dusk at 5:21 pm. On that day in 2023, we had cloudy, mild, freezing rain showers and temperatures between 44 and 32 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 59 back in 1973. Last week I bought honey ๐Ÿ›’ but I haven’t opened it yet. I’ve decided to include more natural sugars sparingly in my diet for flavor but only occasionally as a treat. That and real maple ๐Ÿ syrup. Yum. But it’s not going to be an everyday thing and will always be paired with fiber rich foods and whole grains be it milled corn, milled oats or whole wheat foot.

Bethlehem Energy Center Aka Albany Steam Station

With the year drawing to a close in a week …

I think it’s been a good year.

As they say, years don’t matter much but decades matter much more. Last year I didn’t think was a real good year, not terrible but also not great. The markets crapped out the second half of 2022, leaving me feeling less enthusiastic with my progress on saving and growing my wealth, getting closer to my future goals. While I learned a fair bit in 2022, everything seemed like a bit of a step down from 2021, with remote work done and the year taken up a lot of work.

But with 2023 coming a close, I think my 40th year of my life has been a much better one.

For one, starting next year I start my exciting new career as Director of Data Services. It’s significantly more pay, at least when you look at the round number in mind, though it’s not really that much more with inflation. That means more savings. But this past year as also been one of a lot of learning, and personal growth. I have lost a lot of weight, while my investments have swelled with a strong stock market, even while the bond investments slackened and CD and savings struggled to keep up with the rolling inflation. Gas prices were down, my truck was running well, so I had a delightful summer vacation in the Finger Lakes and a great trip to West Virginia, along with many smaller but wonderful trips like the one I’m currently on out in Madison County, along with other trips this summer and autumn to the Adirondacks and Central New York. Caring about my health and eating good quality foods really improved not just my waist line but also my physical and mental health — my doctor’s check up showed me in a good health, despite occasionally peeing and pooping a lot due to my newly found water and fiber-rich healthy eating habits.

I am hoping next year will also be a great one. I’ll do my best.

 Sparkler

Nostgolia on this Election Day 2023 โ˜•๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ

This year I’m glad I’m not involved in any elections or doing anything political. Just sipping my coffee watching the sun rise remembering the days gone by but glad I’m not at all rushed this morning.

Good morning! Happy Election Day 2023. Partly cloudy โ›… and 51 degrees at the Stoney Pond State Forest. โ˜” There is a west-southwest breeze at 15 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 47 degrees. I can smell the manure somebody’s spreading this morning ๐Ÿ’ฉ it’s November in Madison County and the field work is soon to be done for the season. ๐Ÿšœ They might have snow as soon as midweek.

Turned out to be a much nicer morning then expected. โ˜• I knew it was going to be a great day when I awoke, saw the clear night skies ๐ŸŒœand the moon. Had a nice hardy breakfast of eggs ๐Ÿณ with lots of vegetables and onions ๐Ÿง… that I got at Aldi’a yesterday in Cazenovia. While yesterday was cold, damp and gray at times it was still a good day with lots of riding ๐Ÿšฒ and making the most of my day off. A lot has changed in this world over the past few years but mornings are still quite beautiful and the coffee is good.

Glad I’m not involved in any elections this year ๐Ÿ—ณ but there were many hard fought ones out of Bill Magees auction house ๐Ÿ—๏ธ ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿบjust down the road. Been half a decade now, I saw the bridge in Cazenovia they renamed after him. It was sad he lost five years ago, but during that general election cycle wasn’t my race. ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐ŸŒพ Truth is winning these rural districts is almost impossible with the democratic party becoming mostly an urban issues party with gun ๐Ÿ”ซ control one of their top priorities. I can understand why people vote the way they do nowadays out in the country. ๐Ÿšœ It’s not just Trump. Both parties have become more extreme but the Republicans have really locked up the rural areas nowadays. I have a feeling that Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Senator John Tester of Montana are going to loose in 2024, especially if the GOP runs a stronger presidential candidate then felon Donald Trump. โณ Time moves on. Democrats though really have locked up the suburbs, especially the older ones and professional class. ๐Ÿ•ด๐Ÿป

Today will have showers likely, mainly between 10am and 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a temperature falling to around 43 by 5pm. ๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ Breezy, with a west wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with sunny skies in the afternoon. The high last year was 69 degrees. The record high of 75 was set in 1938. 4.5 inches of snow fell back in 1886.โ„

I’m not sure how long it will be nice, clouds are already pushing in. ๐ŸŒฅ I don’t want to deal with wet camping gear ๐Ÿ• so I’m slowly but surely taking things down. I don’t have solid plans for today but I think ๐Ÿค” I’ll just go for a walk ๐Ÿšถ around Stoney Pond then head home and get unpacked. ๐Ÿ‘ช Planning to go see my family this afternoon it’s been three 3โƒฃ weeks as I’ve been out of town ๐ŸŒฒ on various trips. Despite yesterday being cold and dreary especially midday it was a great trip.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:47 am with sun having an altitude of 30.9ยฐ from the due south horizon (-39.6ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 10 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:08 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (241ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (249ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:50 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 8 seconds with dusk around 5:18 pm, which is one minute and 10 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:53 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 44 degrees. Breezy, 20 mph breeze โ›… from the west-northwest with gusts up to 32mph. Today will have 10 hours and 6 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 26 seconds over yesterday.

Yesterday I rode the South Trail from outside of Cazenovia to New Woodstock. ๐Ÿšต Nice ride though best on a mountain bike as some parts of the trail are a bit rough with roots and gravel. Pungent with the cow poop and water slurry ๐Ÿฎ ๐Ÿ’ฉ one of the dairies was applying to a nearby field but that’s to be expected this time of year.

Spent a little bit of time riding around New Woodstock yesterday after taking the South Trail from outside of Cazenovia to New Woodstock. ๐Ÿš‚ Neat little village with a Historical Museum just off the rail trail. They like in Cazenovia also have an old Black Diamond Caboose there. Cute little village.

Unfortunately my bike had developed a really annoying squeak on Sunday afternoon โš™๏ธ which I couldn’t figure out and started applying grease everywhere, including getting it all over my hands ๐Ÿ‘ and jeans ๐Ÿ‘– and started to drive me crazy thinking I might have a failing bearing or some problem that could leave me stranded. I thought it was just some stone dust from the Erie Canalway somewhere it shouldn’t be mixed with the grease. Kept stopping, applying grease trying to find the noise. ๐Ÿ”• Finally, I figured it out, it was the left pedal got some stone dust in it and squeaking. A little spray lubricant, knock off WD 40 on the pedal after my south trail ride ๐Ÿšฒ returned my sanity.

Swung by Critz Farms hoping to get apples ๐Ÿ but it looked like only the brewery was open ๐Ÿป and I wasn’t looking for a drink. So I went to Cazenovia Lake Park. Kind of cold gray afternoon but the geeese didn’t seem to mind the cool gray day on Cazenovia Lake. ๐Ÿฆ†

Then I went to the Lorenzo State Historic Site, never been there before. โ›ฒ Been by it a million times though. It was a Monday so all the buildings were shut up and no visitor services or as I needed a bathroom ๐Ÿšฝ but it was still nice to explore the grounds. Swung by the library ๐Ÿ“š in Cazenovia for a pee.

Then I Canastota – Cazenovia Trailway, it was starting to rain and was cold didn’t spend a lot of time, โ˜” wanted get back to camp and start cooking soup plus by then I needed another bathroom ๐Ÿšฝ break. Too much coffee โ˜• in the morning. ๐ŸŒ… Also didn’t feel like carrying my mountain bike over several steps to cross Bingley Road. Visited Aldi’s in Cazenovia ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿฅฆ, such a delightful shopping experience. ๐Ÿ›’ Low prices, simple selection quick in and out and the cashier lines without them bagging is so quick. โ˜บ

Got back to camp around 4 pm accidentally brushed a tree with one of my tires backing into the campsite โ›บ rushing having to pee but didn’t do any body damage to my truck ๐Ÿ›ป as the tires stick out beyond the body. Sun โ˜€ came out and ghe wind died down. Fried onions and mushrooms, boiled carrots, broccoli, spinach and whole wheat pasta, added some tuna fish ๐Ÿ  for an excellent dinner. Soup really warmed me up ๐Ÿฒ, I just wish I had some homemade bread ๐Ÿž to dip in it but I eat all of that the previous three days. Had a nice fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ didn’t rain until 7:30 pm so it was a good evening at which point I retired to bed ๐Ÿ› in my truck for the evening.

Tonight will have a chance of rain and snow showers before 11pm, then a slight chance of snow showers between 11pm and 1am, then a chance of flurries after 1am. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 26 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 3rd. Northwest wind 14 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 34 degrees. The record low of 18 occurred back in 1971.

Cool but fairly decent now for Veterans Day Weekend, especially come Saturday. โ˜€ Friday, clouds then clearing, high may reach 43. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 37. Sunday, going to be sunny and 39. Typical average high for the weekend is 51 degrees. Probably will stay ๐Ÿก next weekend.

Looking ahead, next Tuesday is Average High is 50 ๐Ÿ‚ when the sun will be setting at 4:42 pm with dusk at 5:11 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 42 and 27 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 50 degrees. We hit a record high of 70 back in 1973.

Here is some random financial advice that the good ol’ boy came up with …

I Am Happy For The Sun

1) Debt is evil, don’t make it.
If you can’t afford to buy something with cash, you can’t afford it. Your poor. Be a grown up and accept that fact.

2) Live in poverty.
It’s always bad to have money in your bank account, because it doesn’t earn much interest and means it will get spent on things that you’ll spend later to get rid of at the landfill. I rarely have more then a $1,000 in the bank, because I’d rather live paycheck-to-paycheck, knowing that every time I look at my bank account I can’t afford to buy junk. Lock the rest of the money up in investments and savings accounts, the later that offers more flexibility during emergencies and for buying bigger purchases after a few years.

 Landfill

3) Remember 90% of things you buy are going to either become poop or smell like burnt plastic in the burn barrel within 2 weeks of buying it.
While we all like playing with fire, watching things melt, and colorful flames, buying things to set on fire is a waste of money. So in other words, don’t buy it.

4) Do antagonize over $20 purchases.
Little things add up quickly. Do you really need it? Anything that is non-essential should not be purchased — even if you like watching plastic melt and burn.

5) Don’t take a raise — or at least the majority of a raise.
Rather then taking a raise, use automatic deposits to savings accounts, 401ks, IRAs, or any other vehicle that defers the money to make raise never appear in your bank account rather then take it and spend it.

6) Always look for lower-cost ways of doing things.
Does the government offer the service for free or low-cost? Public libraries, public transportation, and public forest lands are free (or low cost) for your use and enjoyment.

7) Try to save more then you spend each week.
If you take home $1,300 then invest $700 of that check a wide variety of ways. It’s okay to withdraw money every few years for a big purchase, but at least you’ll be getting a better deal then most by buying it with money that has earned compounded interest rather then paying finance charges.

8) Sales are horseshit.
Buying things on sale usually is a bad way to save money on the purchase, unless you’ve been deferring a necessary purchase for a number of months.

Happy !!

9) Celebrate when the stock market goes down.
It means you can buy more stock for less money. Stock paper is just that — it has no value until you it cash it in. You shouldn’t give a rats ass about the stock market going down — except to look forward to the deals you are going to get. You shouldn’t be buying stock paper unless it’s for long-term goals, that can be sold when the market is booming.

10) Cheap, diverse investments are better then expensive ones.
Self-investing in boring, uninteresting broad-based funds are better. If you don’t understand an investment, then you shouldn’t be investing it. Have a dozen different ways of investing with different banks, different funds, and different investment types. It’s good to bet against your own investments with mutually opposing investments. If one thing goes bad, you’ll have other things to fall back.

11) Keeping buying a little bit of your investments each week, when you get paid.
The fancy financial types call this cost-based-averaging. It’s also not bad idea to wait until the market drops back down and convert some savings to stock, but be patient and wait for a good drop in the market. When people have been panicking on Wall Street for a week, that’s a good time to drop that $5,000 or $10,000 you don’t really need and toss it in the market for the hell of it — knowing that you might never get the money back — but you might also make out well.

Republican Sherriff Target Practice?

12) Pretend money in retirement accounts and stocks, unmature certificate of deposits is totally inaccessible and for all intents and purposes does not exist.
I mean I think have a ballpark idea what is in my investment accounts, but I don’t really give that much of dang, because it changes every day. I’m betting that in 20 years it will be a bigger amount. And for all intents and purposes, stock paper is an imaginary money — as stock paper has zero value until you cash it out.
