Mom picked me up some rye flower and dill weed and adding some wheat flour, yeast, water, salt and some vital wheat gluten made some good bread. Wish I had more rise though, I could try more yeast next time or a higher portion of vital wheat gluten and less wheat flour. Wheat flour is difficult as it is very low in gluten and is heavy with all that healthy protein and fiber.
Good morning! Happy Thursday. Mostly sunny and 30 degrees in Albany, NY. There is a west breeze at 5 mph. ๐. There are 0.3 inches of snow on the ground. โ ๏ธCold start to the morning, though warming up quickly, it will be above freezing by 9 AM.
Rode my bike in again to work today. ๐ฒ Like I do most days, while the weather is decent. Today is share cookies day in the office ๐ช so I had to be careful riding in with my bike box full with my laptop, lunch, snacks, and a large glass pyrex container full of cookies I baked. ๐ฆ ๐ช ๐ป ๐ But with careful ride in on the somewhat snowy and icy bike trail I made it in safely. I did make sure my basket was good and tight to the panier rack, and things bungeed down, and easy on the bumps.

Big Red passed his inspection with no issues, ๐๐ป the oil changed and tires rotated. Prices have gone up a bit in the shop, I think it was about $94 bucks for all three things but I should be good until next summer except should random things break or need repair before then. Makes me want to go back to changing my own oil, lol. ๐ข I want to get another year out of Big Red if at all possible, so I’ll feed it parts beyond engine or transmission tear-down type repairs. ๐ฉ๐ง Rust continues to be an issue but I’ve been painting it with red primer, and some point maybe in the spring I’ll cover with duplicate color match. ๐จ๐จ I haven’t put the hub caps back on, will do this weekend after I do a quick check of the torque of the wheel nuts, lest the shop mess that up. ๐ง Can’t happen twice, right?
Tonight will be mostly clear ๐, with a low of 28 degrees at 3am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 29th. South wind around 8 mph. Today in 1994, started construction begins on the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze river. The Three Gorges Dam has been the world’s largest power station in terms of installed capacity (22,500 MW) since 2012. In 2014, the dam generated 98.8 terawatt-hours (TWh) and had the world record, but was surpassed by the Itaipú Dam, which set the new world record in 2016, producing 103.1 TWh. ๐ Also, today was a notable date in civil rights history, with the release of the Heart of Atlanta Motel, Inc. v. United States, 379 U.S. 241 (1964), a landmark United States Supreme Court case holding that the Commerce Clause gave the U.S. Congress power to force private businesses to abide by Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination in public accommodations.
Mild and pretty nice for the weekend. ๐ Friday is going to be in the fifties. And Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 45. North wind around 6 mph. Sunday, more clouds push in especially late, with a high near 47. Typical average high for the weekend is 38 degrees.

REI promotes that so they can sell you more outdoors gear. I don’t need any more junk, I’m just ready to head out of town to the mountains to hike, camp and spend a few days away from the internet.

That five hour energy shot โ really wakes you up, combined with cream of wheat ๐พ, strawberries ๐, banana ๐ and some Greek Yogurt๐ฅค for protein. Also had some edamane for extra protein boost as I’m hiking. Goal ๐ฅ is to be on the road before eight. ๐ป

Today I’m heading up to Prospect Mountain โฐ for a quick hike up there and then to the Adirondacks to camp for four days. โบ Packed the microspikes as I may want them for Prospect. Probably taking the steep trail from Spring Street in the village to the summit. Going to be a cold night ahead โ, sunset comes early ๐ and I’m worried ๐ฏ about the snow depth requiring me to drag gear back to camp so I want to make sure I get an early start both up and down the mountain and then to set up camp โบ. Thanksgiving ๐ฆ dinner with the folks was good but kind of bland and ordinary, the pie ๐ฅง was very sugary. Still I treasure the family ๐ช dinner ๐ฝ as it may very well be the last or one of the last with mom’s cooking. She cooked all day ๐ฉ๐ผโ๐ณ and did her best to make a delicious ๐ meal. I enjoyed it in the context of what it is. I think I’ve gotten more and more into spice while my parents like things with less of a kick. โณ Definitely when I start cooking Thanksgiving dinner myself I’ll use a lot more spice and less sugar and fat. Gravy is so bland and fatty unless you really amp it up with spice. Time spent with your parents, enjoying their home cooking in your forties is so precious.
Tonight will be mostly clear ๐, with a low of 22 degrees at 6am. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 17th. Going to be even colder up north โ, talking the single digits by morning. I got a fair amount of propane so I should be good. โจ Bringing the thermal underwear, insulated bib overalls and full face mask in preparation for a cold night ahead. ๐งค
Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐, with a high of 40 degrees at 1pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 9th. That should be good for charging the batteries ๐ as it’s going to be cold. Saturday and Sunday plan to just hike around camp โบ and do some reading ๐, listening to podcasts ๐ป and relaxing away from it all. Need to tune into the weather radio to keep an eye on how much snow will arrive Sunday night into Monday and then decide if I should head home early. ๐ก

I was on the fence about riding in today but I figured it would save a buck thirty and I figured even if the weather is crap for the evening I’m not going to be riding home as it’s dark out.
Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Partly cloudy and 46 degrees at the Empire State Plaza. โ There is a south breeze at 13 mph. ๐. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Monday around noontime. โ๏ธ
That wind is really whipping around on the Plaza ๐ฌ๏ธ but the actual ride in was quite pleasant. I’d like to get in 10,000 steps for the day ๐ฃ but that might be hard as I have a one o’clock meeting ๐งโ๐ผ and I’m not sure if it will be nice enough to walk in the evening. Plus it’s a Friday and I’m tired but the 7 ยพ mile bike ride from Delmar to the office downtown ๐ข and the eighteen flights of stairs to my office has to count for something.
Today will be partly sunny ๐, with a high of 63 degrees at 1pm. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 13th. Maximum dew point of 50 at 4pm. The record high of 73 was set in 1928. 2.8 inches of snow fell back in 1992.โ
That’s a pretty impressive forecast to start the day out, and it was worth it to ride in. ๐ฒ I was a bit hesitant as the weather is going to be cool and windy ๐ฌ come the evening as the front pushes through that will bring rain for SZ opening day ๐ฆ and I’m planning on bringing my laptop home, ๐ป and hauling the day pack with the laptop carrying case plus loading my bike on the bus ๐ can be a bit of a armful but I’ve done it before. Bike will ride good on the bus even if it’s windy I’m sure, as there is plenty of wind pushing on the bike every other day I ride the bus with my bike on the expressway.
Yesterday I got sweet onions ๐ง and that was the first thing I chopped up this morning and fried up with spinach, mushrooms ๐ tomatoes ๐ and eggs ๐ฅ. Should be a pretty mild evening. But windy. Today will have 9 hours and 45 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 6 seconds over yesterday.
Maybe I will be able to do an evening walk ๐ถโโ๏ธ after all. I will see on how cold and windy it is out this afternoon. I might also walk down to the library, and play with remote sensing data down at the library. But first more of that pea soup ๐ฒ and homemade bread that I made up yesterday and proved to be a good dinner. Plus maybe I’ll fry up more apples ๐ and bananas with that avocado oil ๐ฅ which is great because I can use a ton of heat to cook and brown things without reaching the smoke point.

Continuing that Udemy Course on Remote Sensing using the Semi Automatic Classification plugin ๐บ. I’m not totally sure what I’m going to use my new found skills for but it’s something I’ve been interested in a while. ๐ฅ Raster math is kind of fun and interesting, especially when you use R to do it. Tomorrow will have a chance of showers, mainly before 7am. Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing ๐, with a high of 49 degrees at 12pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 16th. North wind 10 to 13 mph. Chilly with that wind though. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 43 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1928. 9.0 inches of snow fell back in 1980.โ
Doesn’t look like a real great Saturday, โท but I might go to the Bethlehem Sports Mart that the Boy Scouts host at the High School and look at Cross Country Skis. Then maybe ride out to Voorheesville, just to check out the new Slingerlands temporary rail trail bridge, ๐ and maybe get apples ๐ at Indian Ladder and other things at Hannaford Voorheesville. I’ll still probably get up at 5 o’clock to bake bread ๐ฅ๐ and Butternut Squash. ๐
Looking ahead to Sunday, a slight chance of showers before 1pm. ๐ Partly sunny, with a high near 47. Southwest wind 8 to 15 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Another cool day with the wind, but being SZ season, I’ll probably not wander too far out in the woods. ๐ฆ But maybe ride out to Five Rivers. And also run to the grocery store for the big weekly shop ๐ . Chance of precipitation is 20%. Typical average high for the weekend is 48 degrees.
Looking ahead, next Friday is Buy Nothing Day ๐๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:27 pm with dusk at 4:56 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 49 and 24 degrees. I know you will miss all the sales but that plastic shit kind of stinks when you burn it. Typically, the high temperature is 46 degrees. We hit a record high of 70 back in 2014.
I’m still hoping to get out of town next Friday into next week โบ ๐ต but I’m watching the forecast and it seems like the Adirondacks might be getting it’s first good snow come the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. ๐จ It’s not to say I can’t hot tent though, as long as the snow banks aren’t too deep along NY 8. Maybe the bigger issue is that next weekend might be cold โ quite cold up north. It’s not the mercury I’m concerned about but if it’s windy out or not. That wind chill can really get to you.

Didn’t sleep very well last night ๐, but breakfast and coffee is cooking now. ๐ฅ Pancakes as usual. ๐ฎ Ran out of milk, I was going to get it after my evening walk but I didn’t. ๐ถ๐ป I wasn’t sure I wouldn’t be able to make my morning walk as I didn’t get a real early start but I’m walking. My headphones ๐ง aren’t working real well but so be it. Mild morning so I’m just wearing the vest. Feels more like early April than December.
Today will be partly sunny ๐, with a high of 43 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 28th. Northwest wind 10 to 16 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 52 degrees. The record high of 64 was set in 1966. 6.1 inches of snow fell back in 2014.โ
I am working downtown today at least for a few hours ๐ผ, and I’m obviously not thrilled about riding the bus ๐ during a major uptick of pandemic, where they are reminding us to sign in and out for contact tracing purposes. ๐พHI, we’re from the government and we want you to know we are putting under arrest as you might have a virus that you may die from. ๐ That Missouri beef farmer I follow on YouTube had a good quarrentine from his deer ๐ฆ blind I heard. At one level I will be glad when the vaccine is widely available.
Solar noon ๐ is at 11:49 am with sun having an altitude of 24.4ยฐ from the due south horizon (-46.4ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐ starts at 3:38 pm with the sun in the southwest (231ยฐ). ๐ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (239ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:23 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 23 seconds with dusk around 4:53 pm, which is 3 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:30 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ and temperatures around 43 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 7 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 48 seconds over yesterday.
This evening I am doing more of the interview with John Wolcott ๐over a Zoom although I will just be doing the audio because I haven’t upgraded my phone yet for the extra data. Two weeks though. Lately though I’ve already started to burn through a lot of data on my phone ๐ฑ because it’s too cold to work from the library. I will definitely need the extra data come January when work is busier and it’s too cold to work down at the library parking lot.
Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ค, with a low of 27 degrees at 2am. Four degrees above normal, whichn0 is similar to a typical night around December 2nd. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2019, we had clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 26 degrees. The record low of -8 occurred back in 1988.
Today in 1978, Prime Minister of Israel Menachem Begin and President of Egypt Anwar Sadat are jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize ๐ for their work ending the Arab-Isreali conflict. Also, in 1817 Mississippi becomes the 20th U.S. state. ๐ด๓ ต๓ ณ๓ ญ๓ ณ๓ ฟ
