Snow showers around for the first sort of day for spring. ๐ŸŒจ

Spring starts at 11:50 pm in the evening not that it feels much like spring today. I’m sure it will be bitterly cold until it’s like 80 degrees out. Always happens that way.

Good morning! Snow flurries and 30 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ„ There is a northwest breeze at 13 mph. ๐Ÿƒ with gusts up to 23 mph ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ. Not a constant wind but I hear it picking up at times. Things will start to thaw out at around 9 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Going to be cold ride in this morning, but I still enjoy the ride. ๐Ÿšฒ It was cold riding home last night as I was doing the Zoom meeting for Save the Pine Bush ๐ŸŒฒdown in the Noonan Preserve though it started to get dark and I had to head home. ๐ŸŒ† Dinner last night was red kidney beans I cooked and mashed into essentially refried beans minus the frying in fat, on top of onion Johnny cakes. Not a half bad dinner. I was tired and cold to bed ๐Ÿ› shortly there after.

Today will have a slight chance of snow showers before 8am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 42 degrees at 4pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 8th. Northwest wind around 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 33 degrees. The record high of 78 was set in 2012. 9.6 inches of snow fell back in 1971.โ„

Yesterday I got my Early Voting by Mail Ballot ๐Ÿ—ณ and I promptly filled it out and will toss in a post office box ๐Ÿ“ฎon my way riding to work. Decided to vote for Dean Phillipson for President, not that it’s going to change anything but I figured why not. I will probably vote Green or Libertarian come November, I’m not super thrilled with either of the leading elderly candidates. I think Biden has done a lot of good things, but I can’t argue that in some ways Trump has personally been better for me with the tax cuts.

I’ve been having problems with root rot with some of my plants, ๐Ÿฅ€ so I brought them home and repotted them with fresh soil. I am tough with plants. Doesn’t help though my office is bone try, due to being over a printing plant  ๐Ÿญ๏ธ where they have to keep things dry to keep paper from sticking together.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:04 pm with sun having an altitude of 47.1° from the due south horizon (-23.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:30 pm with the sun in the west (264°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (271°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:07 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 53 seconds with dusk around 7:35 pm, which is one minute and 10 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the east-southeast (119°) at an altitude of 61° from the horizon, 247,292 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:08 pm. At sunset, look for snow flurries ๐ŸŒจ and temperatures around 39 degrees. There will be a southwest breeze at 6 mph. Less windy by evening. Tomorrow will have 12 hours and 13 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over today.

I haven’t had a chance to talk to my neighbor about the garbage pile ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ next to his unit as he got home from work after I was in bed. If see him out and about I’ll try to find out what’s going on. He doesn’t look like he’s packing up to move out and the transfer station was open Saturday and today so it’s kind of werid. I figure if anything the rats will be attracted to his unit. ๐Ÿ€ The whole situation is kind of awkward and I don’t want to be the tattle tail but also not be dealing with problems.

Tonight will have a chance of snow showers, mainly after 9pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 31 degrees at 6am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 30th. South wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2023, we had light snow in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 21 degrees. The record low of 2 occurred back in 1967.

Another kind of shit March weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, rain and snow likely before 2pm, then a chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 42. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 38. Typical average high for the weekend is 48 degrees. I’m hoping for nicer weather come the following weekend to head up north, although even with a forecast like that I’ll make it owrk.

Looking ahead, there are 3 weeks until 7:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ with dusk at 7:59 pm. On that day in 2023, we had sunny and temperatures between 55 and 29 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 56 degrees. That should feel very spring like. ๐ŸŒท We hit a record high of 77 back in 1991.

Going to be a beautiful Saturday for a drive out in Rensselaer County ๐Ÿ›ป

Get your motor running, head out on the highway, looking for adventure and whatever comes my way.

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Going to be a beautiful start to the weekend for doing some driving around. Partly cloudy and 39 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… There is a west-northwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Monday around 2 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ I do wish I could go out camping, but things are going to be muddy after the rain, plus I’m thinking a week from next Thursday of heading up to the Adirondacks for a three-day weekend, assuming they don’t get a shit ton of snow up north in the meantime or it’s pouring rain all Easter weekend. ๐Ÿ‡

Things are going better since I’ve been doing more research ๐Ÿ›– on housing options, and realizing I have to be more flexible on my thinking — even if it means a longer commute then is ideal to live rural. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐ŸŒพSpending a lot of money on gas โ›ฝ๏ธ and burning through cars ๐Ÿš— every 8-10 years ain’t fun, but I may have to push closer to 35 mile commute rather then the less 30 mile commute I was going for. The thing is in 8 years from my next car purchase in 2025, I’ll have built up my solar system and there will be far more options for electric vehicles. ๐Ÿ”Œ I really like some of the options for modular cabins, especially the smaller ones built to code for residential use at a factory and delivered to the site with full interior built. Right now I’m quite enthralled by the Zook Settler and similar style small-one floor code-compliant pre-built residential cabins. I am thinking one floor, no basement, smallest size for a smallest possible electrical and heating demand. I like the wood-walls, that won’t sure the dirt like drywall, and the metal roof for fire safety and insurance savings, lest an ember fall on the roof.

Then get an EPA-certified, efficient wood stove and a small heat pump and use one of the bedrooms as a mechanical room — for batteries, split-phase inverter, well pressure tank, and maybe eventually a washing machine and computer equipment. ๐Ÿ”‹ If I get serious about the map making business, I might eventually get an used plotter. I am thinking the heat pump can be used when I’m not there to keep things from freezing in winter. โ™จ๏ธ Wouldn’t run much though, as I’d keep the temperature low on the heat pump in the winter, ๐ŸŒจ๏ธ and the thing is a cabin built to 2018 federal energy standards, as required by NY State, passing blower efficiency tests, ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธis going to have minimal heat loss. I am going to need a quality gasoline generator like a Honda, which will have remote start, which can be triggered off inverter on low battery, which can keep things from freezing up in winter if I’m away for an extended time. Plus as much as I personally loathe air conditioning, the climate is warming ๐ŸŒŽ๏ธ and it sure would be nice to come home to on that sultry summer nights, especially when the batteries are full and it makes sense to be keeping the cabin cold rather then wasting the solar energy. ๐ŸงŠ Use a standard electric refrigerator and probably a gas stove converted to use propane — and in winter, sometimes use the wood stove to atop. If I’m only using propane for the stove, I can get away with 30 lb propane tanks, that I can throw in the pickup and get filled at any propane retailer rather then paying a big truck to come out there and be dependent on one supplier. That said, it’s going to be a lot of money, but I’ve saved for a long time, done well in the markets. What I’m building is far smaller then your typical suburban home and will consume far less energy, especially fossil energy.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 54 degrees at 5pm. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 5th. West wind 5 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 51 degrees. The record high of 82 was set in 1990. 13.4 inches of snow fell back in 1956.โ„

At any rate, that’s all fun and games, ๐Ÿ•น๏ธ though first I have to find land that I love โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿ”ฅand is a good fit for me. The commute thing sucks, but I want to find a place that feels like and will be my home for the rest of my life.ย  ๐Ÿš— I am exploring Rensselaer County today, not because that’s necessarily where I will move, as I’m biased towards the Hilltowns of Albany County, but as far as birds eye distance goesย  ๐Ÿฆœ there’s more remote country, closer to work then in the Hilltowns, being that work in Menands. ๐Ÿ The roads kind of suck and traffic in Rensselaer County, (Hoosick Street and NY 7) but as a property owner, the conservative politics of land of Joe Bruno would suit me well. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ What’s good for my business, as I like to say, might not necessarily always be good for myself. Not only do I want to look at a list of parcels I’ve seen listed in Hoosick Falls, Petersburg and Grafton, I also want to explore some of Petersburg State Forest for mountain biking, hiking and camping ๐Ÿ•๏ธ ๐Ÿฅพ in the future. It’s fun to drive the back roads.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:05 pm with sun having an altitude of 45.9ยฐ from the due south horizon (-25ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:26 pm with the sun in the west (263ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (269ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:04 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 53 seconds with dusk around 7:31 pm, which is one minute and 10 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the southwest (215ยฐ) at an altitude of 73ยฐ from the horizon, 239,018 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:05 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 50 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 12 hours and 4 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over today.

For the Easter weekend, ๐Ÿฐ as I was noting, I really want to get out of town to go to the Adirondacks. The burn ban doesn’t apply to small campfires, and I don’t think it’s going to be bone dry up north at that point based on the forecast. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Plus I really want a good fire to help myself sleep betterย  ๐Ÿ›Œ and burn up some of the accumulated papers. I have nothing but disdain for the burn ban, but I understand the fire risk this time of year, as I know how easy it can be set your yard on fire, and as a future property owner I don’t want that to happen. ๐Ÿ˜๏ธ You can say what you want about New York State, but it pays my bills and it’s my home. Building standards mean I will end up with a quality, energy efficient building even if I have my views on the gun laws and open burning restrictions. Happy March 16th.

Tonight will have showers, mainly after 2am. ๐ŸŒง Low of 41 degrees at 6am. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 22nd. Light southeast wind becoming south 6 to 11 mph in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2023, we had partly cloudy skies. It got down to 32 degrees. The record low of -1 occurred back in 1916.

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now will be Average High is 60 ๐ŸŒท when the sun will be setting at 7:40 pm with dusk at 8:08 pm.

Snow and Ice Covered Truck Trail

Do you believe in magic? With today’s weather it will feel almost magical ๐ŸŒž

At least when we see the sun later on this morning. Going to be a nice, spring like day once the clouds part. Or so I hope. My shoulder is still sore and achy, like from the Lyme I got years ago now, but I am fine. I feel a lot better now that I got my initial ideas sketched out for my off-grid property and cabin, even if it’s just a sketch and years worth of work ahead. I certainly like it much better then suburbanite, high consumption crap covered with vinyl-siding that dominates the real estate classifieds.

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Mostly cloudy and 45 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a north-northwest breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The skies will clear around 10 am.

I ended up opening the windows after heading to bed, ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿš’ after I burned something on the kitchen stove cooking and it inevitably set off the fire alarm. ๐Ÿ””  It was actually nice sleeping with the fresh air, and I am feeling a lot better the past few days, thought still a bit achy. I think it also helped that I started to draft out what I really want when I own my own land and build my house, and the reassurance from others that it’s possible. It feels good to know I don’t have to be stuck in surburbia forever, and that the only option isn’t vinyl siding and drywall with a big natural gas boiler and a 3,000 square foot home full of things soon to be garbage with a big mowed grass lawn. ๐Ÿคฎ It is possible to build that off-grid cabin I really want for a budget I can afford. And on that note, ๐Ÿ˜ด suddenly I am sleeping better.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 55 degrees at 1pm. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 6th. Maximum dew point of 47 at 12pm. North wind 7 to 9 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 40 degrees. The record high of 64 was set in 2002. 10.9 inches of snow fell back in 1994.โ„

On the list for today is buying the poster frames, ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ for the artwork to decorate my new office. Along with a brighter light bulb for the desk, maybe a candle warmer, and groceries for the week. ๐Ÿ›’ My pantry is well depleted, I really need to get shopping. ๐Ÿ  ๐Ÿ‡ Amazing how fast food comes and gets eaten around this place. I think I must have a very big appetite, but some of it is lower calorie value of the food I eat so I end up eating more, especially after ride back and forth to work on my bicycle. โ™ป๏ธ I also need to return cans to get my deposit back and free up some space in the outside trash can.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:08 pm with sun having an altitude of 40.8° from the due south horizon (-30° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 5:10 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (256°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (262°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:48 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 56 seconds with dusk around 6:16 pm, which is one minute and 13 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:49 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 54 degrees. The dew point will be 47 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 24 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

In the afternoon going out to see the family ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ‘ง and then over to my friend’s from Boy Scouts, to spend some time together, and learn what I can learn about how he put together his homestead outside of Greenville, rebuilding an old and vacant home. Now I’m thinking about building new, ๐Ÿ‘ท‍โ™€๏ธ but I want to gain whatever insight I can in my options and what contractors he worked with the process with the town building inspector. ๐Ÿงญ The more I can learn about the process, the fewer costly mistakes I will likely make, or so I hope. For me, it’s so much about the money but living the life I want to live. ๐Ÿ•๏ธ๐Ÿฅพ๐Ÿท๐Ÿ”

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒซ๏ธ, with a low of 40 degrees at 5am. 18 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 22nd. North wind 3 to 6 mph. In 2023, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 32 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1950. I can leave my windows open again tonight! ๐Ÿ”ณ That’s great. I sleep so much better with fresh air.

Back in 1972, an airplane crashes in suburban Albany, off Holmesdale Ave in Albany (near Colvin Avenue and Washington Ave). Regional Carrier, Mohawk Airlines Flight 405 crashes as a result of a control malfunction and insufficient training in emergency procedures. ๐Ÿ›ฉ๏ธ  Also today in 1873, U.S. Congress enacts the Comstock Law, making it illegal to send any “obscene, lewd, or lascivious” books through the mail. ๐Ÿ“˜ ๐Ÿ“ฌ๏ธ And in 1991, an amateur video captures the beating of Rodney King by Los Angeles police officers. ๐Ÿ‘ฎ‍โ™€๏ธ

Looking ahead, next Sunday is Daylight Savings Time ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 6:57 pm with dusk at 7:24 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2023, we had partly cloudy skies with snow showers and temperatures between 44 and 20 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 43 degrees. We hit a record high of 72 back in 1977. Before my time.

Sugar Loaf and Drowned Lands

And so this is… Merry Christmas 2023 ๐ŸŽ…

After a rather misty, wet but mild Christmas Eve the sun is starting to peak through the clouds. It’s good, I decided I’ll stay an extra night as my family’s holiday party was canceled or more like postponed a week due to the cold that is going around. It’s fine, it’s going to be a fairly nice day to enjoy Christmas walking through the woods, enjoying the birds, wildlife and silence.

Good morning! Mostly cloudy and 37 degrees at the Moscow Hill Camping Area. โ˜ There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Friday around 5 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

I’m enjoying the sun โ˜€ as it’s peaking through the clouds. My Christmas camping trip has been extended by another night after the family Christmas party was postponed. I’m not that disappointed with the nice weather expected today. Even the breeze will be good as it should help dry things out after the misty and muddy mess that was yesterday.

Christmas Day will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 45 degrees at 2pm. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 27th. South wind 6 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 27 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1889. 19.2 inches of snow fell back in 2002.โ„

It should be a great day for Christmas ๐Ÿคถ even if the snow is largely gone. I haven’t decided if I will ride some of the truck trails or just hike, the horse ๐Ÿด trails are closed to mountain bikes for the season ๐Ÿšต but the signs are fairly clear that the hardened roads are fine though might be a bit icy. That said, I can always lock up the bike if I want to head off the truck trails.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 23.8ยฐ from the due south horizon (-46.8ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:47 pm with the sun in the southwest (230ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (238ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:33 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 26 seconds with dusk around 5:04 pm, which is 37 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the east-northeast (68ยฐ) at an altitude of 17ยฐ from the horizon, 240,803 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:41 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 43 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 5 minutes of daytime, an increase of 14 seconds over yesterday.

Breakfast is done ๐Ÿฅš and I’m feeling better after the Charlie Horse I had on my leg earlier in the morning. I might have been dehydrated, I drank a bunch of water. ๐Ÿ’ฆ Gathered firewood for the night ๐Ÿชต, mostly smaller stuff stacked high in hope the sun and breeze will help to dry things out. Last night the fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ was really smokey due to the wood being so wet. I actually retired to bed ๐Ÿ› on Christmas Eve a little after 8 pm as the fire was struggling and I was just kind of tired. Yesterday’s weather was a bit of a let down.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ , with a low of 34 degrees at 3am. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 9th. South wind 8 to 10 mph. In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 16 degrees. The record low of -17 occurred back in 1914.

Looking ahead to New Years Weekend 2024. ๐ŸŽ‡ Saturday, a chance of snow showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 32. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 34. New Years Day, 35 degrees and sunny. Typical average high for the weekend is 35 degrees.

Cattails

Well, I Didn’t Expect that Rain this Morning ๐ŸŒง

After cooking the rice-beans-lentils, along with the sweet potatoes and the acorn squash, I stuck them outside to cool down. Then I heard the rain starting to pound down the roof. Not a problem as the dishes were in sealed containers but it was a surprise. By the time I put the pea soup out I had been cooking, the rain had let up and by the time I took out the overflowing compost inside to dump into the biggest bucket, it wasn’t raining at all. And despite being a little bit damp, and having some sprinkles when I was riding in along the South End Railyards, it turned out to be a super nice day for a ride in.

Good morning! Mostly cloudy and 41 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a southwest breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 5 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Despite the rain, it’s a super mild day. ๐Ÿ˜€ I noticed how warm it truly was when I got up during the night to go to the bathroom ๐Ÿšฝ and started cooking a little before 5 AM. Started out by rinsing the peas that had been soaking overnight and cooking them, and then went back to bed for a little more R&R ๐Ÿ›Œ after which about 5:20 I got up and got a jump on the day, tossing the bread and acorn squash ๐Ÿž ๐ŸŽƒ into the oven to cook, chopping up the carrots ๐Ÿฅ• and onions ๐Ÿง… for the soup ๐Ÿฒ, starting up a pot of rice, lentils and beans ๐Ÿš for lunch and frying up onions, spinach, mushrooms and other vegetables ๐Ÿณ for breakfast.

I really wanted to ride in today, ๐Ÿšฒ and was glad that the rain stopped before it was time to leave after my shower. ๐Ÿšฟ Running kind of late after all that cooking, but it’s fine, it’s going to be a quiet day in the office to at least start out the morning, but depending which projects come in things could pick up. Kind of in an transitory time now, things are winding down a bit at my current position but I haven’t moved on to my new position. Just trying to get loose ends cleaned up. ๐ŸŽ€ I figure once I move to the new office, at least until late January or early February I’m not going to be able to ride in as it will be too dark to ride from the office to Peter Kiernan Plaza to catch the express home ๐ŸšŒ so I’m going to have to take the shuttle which lacks a rack for my bike. But not riding in January probably isn’t a big loss as probably much of the month the bike path will be snow covered, and not to mention it will be cold. โ›„

Had a nice Sunday dinner with the folks ๐Ÿฒ which was turkey soup ๐Ÿฆƒ left over from Thanksgiving. It was pretty good with dinner rolls and lots of egg noodles. Maybe less vegetables and fiber then what I would have at a meal at home, along with more fat ๐Ÿคฐ but it was still good and had a good big bowl of soup. I figure there is only a few more chances to have mom’s home cooking while it’s still good, as she’s getting up there in the years. I can eat healthy the rest of the week, and indeed for lunch, I had red lentil soup with spinach, mushrooms, broccoli and lots of spices. I’ve been noticing lately that my gut has been adjusting to the higher fiber loads, and things have been good though I do try to break up meals so not every night is loaded with beans and lentils, which can be particularly hard a times. ๐Ÿ˜ค I didn’t get many steps in yesterday, as it rained so much ๐ŸŒง so I was glad to ride to work today, and take the 17 flights of stairs up to my office.

Today will have a slight chance of showers after 9am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 47 degrees at 12pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 22nd. Southwest wind 7 to 11 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 38 degrees. The record high of 63 was set in 1998. 6.0 inches of snow fell back in 1901.โ„

On my list of things to get done today is called the shop about getting my truck state inspected ๐Ÿ”Ž ๐Ÿ›ป, tires rotated and oil changed. It’s been nearly 8 months since the last oil change, but with synthetic oil, the fact my truck quit it’s oil burning habit, and the general lack of miles driven over the past few months — especially the early summer when I was looking at mountain bikes ๐Ÿšต‍โ™€๏ธ I still have plenty of time left on the oil, but I figure get it all done at one shot. Truck’s been running good, all the tail lights are working fine, so I expect the state inspection should go smoothly.

Last Monday when I was driving to the laundromat, ๐Ÿ‘• and to wash my truck, the relay that controls the CB radio and was clicking on and off.  ๐Ÿ”˜ Not sure what the issue was but I ended up knocking the over-ride switch connector off, fiddling around with it in the dark. Strangely enough, when I was driving the truck on Sunday I didn’t have any more problems. I do need to replace that crimp connector I broke but I’m not sure where the loose wire was or why the relay was acting up, switching on and off repeatably. โšก It’s not such a big deal right now, as I’m not doing too much driving, and the worse thing that can happen is the relay gets burnt up, and it’s not expensive relay — I can always turn off the CB radio ๐Ÿ“ป manually if I continue to have problems.

Last weekend when I was camping, I accidentally left one of the library books ๐Ÿ“• in back of my truck on the shelf on that rainy, snowy wet morning, ๐ŸŒง and the book got kind of wet from snow falling on it. ๐Ÿ˜ญ After some careful drying over the past week in the oven — using residual heat from cooking or pre-warming the oven, I got the book mostly dry, and now have it propped up between some other books, and weighted down under my bed ๐Ÿ›Œ putting a lot of weight on to flatten it out, almost back to the original shape and size. I’m hopeful I can return the book in close to original condition and not get dinged for damaging the library book. Also warped the cover of another library book using it as a wait to dry out that book in the oven when the broiler had just been ton, so that cover has been taken off the book and is drying out.

I replaced the smoke detector battery ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿš’ ๐Ÿ”‹in my apartment, and now it’s been working properly without so many false alarms from the shower ๐Ÿšฟ steam and cooking. I’ve gotten in the habit now of just taking it down off the wall before cooking in the morning, because inevitably cooking involves smoke, even if it’s just crap I’ve split on the stove. I’ve been thinking of upgrading to a photoelectric detector, because I’m getting really fed up with false alarms from cooking or even the shower. This time of year, especially as I keep the heat turned down in my apartment, the smoke detector is so easily triggered by both shower steam and stove cooking. And as my bedroom is upstairs were smoke detector resides, it’s so easy to set off accidentally. ๐Ÿ›Ž It doesn’t do any good to have a smoke detector if I’m constantly resetting it or taking it off the wall for cooking or showering, and then accidentally forgetting it reset it before bed.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:47 am with sun having an altitude of 25.2° from the due south horizon (-45.7° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:39 pm with the sun in the southwest (232°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (240°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:23 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 21 seconds with dusk around 4:53 pm, which is 13 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:30 pm. At sunset, look out for a chance of rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 45 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 16 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 14 seconds over yesterday.

I am thinking of staying late today at work ๐ŸŽ† to watch the fireworks and state “Empire Plaza” tree lighting ๐ŸŽ„ at 6:15 PM either from my office or down on the plaza. I think this would be my last chance to see the fireworks from my downtown office, ๐Ÿข as I’m not going to be here that much longer. I packed a dinner so I can have it at the end of day. I’ll probably clock out a five, but we’ll see how things go and how much work there is to do.

After being so opposed to smoothies ๐Ÿฅค I ended up discovering how much I like a warm glass of milk with some shredded fruit in it and lots of cinnamon, ginger or pumpkin pie spice to warm myself up as a healthier replacement for hot coca in the evening. I do think a lot of smoothie recipes you find on the internet or at your local health spa are still junk-food, but a warm glass of skim milk with cinnamon and ginger, along with shredded strawberries ๐Ÿ“ or apples ๐ŸŽ with nothing additional added (i.e. no added sugar) really isn’t any worse then having a glass of milk with an apple. And it tastes good, and a good way to warm yourself up. โ˜• I would do coffee, but in the evening, who wants to be up all night? Plus I like drinking milk ๐Ÿฎ and supporting the dairy industry, plus all that good Vitamin A & D. I’ve become a lot less of an ideologue when it comes to eating healthy these days, but I still work to stay away from excessive fat and sugar, though I do give myself a break a times.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 31 degrees at 6am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 19th. Northwest wind 8 to 11 mph. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 26 degrees. The record low of 2 occurred back in 1989.

Next weekend reminds me of the weekend that was. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 49. Sunday, showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 52. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Typical average high for the weekend is 40 degrees. Probably another stay home weekend, it’s the last weekend of regular deer season after which the woods should empty out for exploration. I am still thinking about those days leading up to Christmas to head out to Madison County ๐ŸŽ„ but the week before then I am planning on attending a family Christmas event.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Bake Cookies Day ๐Ÿช when the sun will be setting at 4:25 pm with dusk at 4:55 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 35 and 25 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 37 degrees. We hit a record high of 60 back in 1921. I actually need to to think about what kind of cookies to bake or buy. Saw a good recipe for sugar cookies, I might try to implement using whole wheat flour and stevia, and maybe bananas or honey rather then sugar, though I’m not crazy about how much butter it uses, though butter is kind of necessary to provide shortening to break the gluten bonds and give that wonderful cookie taste. Maybe work in some oatmeal into recipe, for soluble fiber. Or just get some cookies at the grocery store, and the cookies they don’t eat leave for other people.

Darkness Sets In Over Siamese Pond Wilderness

29 days left in the year โŒ›

Depending on how you count it, basically four weekends left if even that before we start the 2024 year. Going to be a busy year, but I am looking forward to the next chapter of my life working out in the suburbs, really putting my data science knowledge and experience to work in my new job. But first a rainy but mild weekend to get through and the holidays.

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Finally the weekend! Not such a drag as I had Monday off and the rest of week was pretty busy, although Friday morning dragged a bit waiting for the next project to come in. Mostly cloudy and 37 degrees at the Delmar, NY. โ˜ Calm wind.Temperatures will drop below freezing at Tuesday around 4 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Started out my morning a little after 5 o’clock as I always do. โฐ I’m not one to set an alarm but I wake up at that hour as I’m usually asleep before 9 PM and around then I have to get up and do the bathroom thing, ๐Ÿ’ฉ so it’s best to get up and going and get a bright and early start on the morning. Decided to bake a breakfast cake this morning ๐Ÿฐ — this time I started with food-processor milled oatmeal, whole wheat flour, stevia, two bananas, baking powder, canned pumpkin an egg, and some water and baking it. Topped it with lots of pumpkin pie spice. ๐ŸŽƒ It was pretty darn good, the egg and gluten from the whole-wheat flour made it very cake like and not so dry as often comes out when cooking with milled oatmeal. Plus some stomach-filling protein from the egg, and two types of fiber — insoluble fiber from the whole-wheat flour and pumpkin plus soluble fiber from oatmeal. โ˜• I had to go to Stewart’s to get milk for the coffee but now this morning is a go.

Today will have a slight chance of showers between 10am and 1pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 47 degrees at 1pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 22nd. South wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 41 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1998. 6.8 inches of snow fell back in 2019.โ„

I am going to take a wait and see approach to today ๐ŸŒง but if it looks like it’s going to remain just cloudy I might head up to the Albany Pine Bush for a bike / hike on some of the trails, ๐Ÿšฒ ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ and then head up to the Salvation Army to look at clothes, especially dressier things for work. ๐Ÿ‘” I am though most likely going to have to just buy some dress shirts and pants for work ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ผ as nothing I have really fits well anymore after loosing so much weight. Then I need to get spices and probably some other groceries at Walmart, though truth be told my pantry isn’t bad currently but I need more frozen fruit and vegetables, ๐Ÿ“ ๐Ÿฅฆ along with the spices. Turmeric and ginger in particular but also some cinnamon and Chipotle would be good as I’m low on all those things. I don’t really have to go shopping, but at some point I do want to replenish my pantry and I hate to stay home all day. ๐Ÿ›’

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:46 am with sun having an altitude of 25.5ยฐ from the due south horizon (-45.4ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:39 pm with the sun in the southwest (233ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (241ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:24 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 21 seconds with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 18 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:31 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 46 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 18 seconds over today.

I haven’t decided to make bread or pea soup today. ๐Ÿž That was originally the plan but I kind of forgot or was tired and cold after last night so after my salmon ๐ŸŸ for dinner, I had some Greek yogurt and pumpkin, ๐ŸŽƒ then settled down to bed ๐Ÿ›Œ doing some more of the Udemy course ๐ŸŽ“ on machine learning and went to sleep. I might wait until Sunday evening to kneed and make more bread, and enjoy it fresh come Monday. Maybe the same thing with the pea soup. I do have kidney beans cooking down on the stove, so I could do beans and rice later, and I took both some previously cooked and frozen chickpeas and butternut squash out of the freezer. Also still have spaghetti squash in the fridge from earlier in the week I should eat before it goes bad. Maybe it’s best to save the bread until Monday. Pea soup is good but it can make me gassy, ๐Ÿ˜ค which is why I was thinking maybe better to have it during the weekend. Helps though if I make sure to drink plenty of water with it and avoid the shredded carrots ๐Ÿฅ• in the bread I’m serving with it.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly after 5am. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 39 degrees at 5am. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 23rd. Light north wind. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 38 degrees. The record low of -1 occurred back in 1976.

The blog advertising pulled in $165 since September 23, ๐Ÿค‘ which isn’t too bad and will help me recoup at least some of the costs of the web hosting come a few weeks when finally the money is deposited in my bank. It looks like I will be earning roughly $75 a month going forward, getting paid every other month. By April, I should have recouped the hosting and domain costs from advertising, though some depends on ad rates which decline after the Christmas season and web traffic, ๐Ÿ•ธ which always picks up during the summer months when people are looking for trails and places for camping. ๐Ÿ• I probably wouldn’t have done the advertising thing but I didn’t like the sting of the rising hosting bills a few months back, of which my bank account still hasn’t fully recovered.

I put in a FOIL request for the Recreation Unit Management Plan Shapefile with the DEC. ๐Ÿ• This would be nice for making maps, somebody asked for it a while back and I never was able to get them the file. Basically this shapefile includes the area covered unit plans, and I can’t find it online on an ArcGIS REST/Service or the DEC website. I don’t like doing too many FOIL requests ๐Ÿฃ these days, as I don’t like my name all over government documents, but this would be useful to have, and could create many good maps and analysis for the blog ๐Ÿ—บ which could further drive traffic here. Come February 2024, I am also going to get the update voter file for the full state rather than just the county that I have now, ๐Ÿ—ณ so I can use it for analysis, especially machine learning purposes to see if I can figure out new ways of targeting ๐ŸŽฏ voters.

As previously noted, next Saturday is Average High is 40 ๐ŸŒจ when the sun will be setting at 4:23 pm with dusk at 4:53 pm. On that day in 2022, we had sunny and temperatures between 39 and 25 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 40 degrees. We hit a record high of 62 back in 1966.

Sun Peaks Over Ashokan Range

A day to remind us of October days gone by โ˜€

Making a run at sixty degrees this afternoon but don’t worry the sun will be setting in the four o’clock hour so no bike ride home.

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Sunny and 31 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž Calm wind. Things will start to thaw out at around 7 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Kind of a cold start to the morning, โ„๏ธ for my morning walk. I was up at 5 AM to start the pea soup ๐Ÿฅ˜ but went back to bed until around 6 AM when I went out for my walk. Oatmeal pancakes, this time experimenting with an egg in the batter, some cider vinegar and baking soda to see if I can make them more fluffy. ๐Ÿฅž Honestly, they were somewhat better. I should play with whole-wheat flour and a more conventional pancake recipe, though I don’t like the idea of adding sugar or oil to the mix. Plenty of sugar from the blueberries ๐Ÿซ I used in the mix.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 57 degrees at 2pm. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 28th. Light and variable wind becoming southeast around 5 mph. A year ago, we had light drizzle in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 42 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 2006. 3.4 inches of snow fell back in 2002.โ„

Riding to work today, ๐Ÿšฒ should be a nice one for that. If not so dark in the evening, it would be excellent for a bike ride home too. Going to be certainly mild enough, I’ll take October weather in mid-November. I’m hoping for a pretty mild winter, โ›„ being an El Nino year. So far no snow or even salt on the roads, as we’ve not had any icing or snow this year as it’s been mild and relatively dry. Probably the best chance for them calling out the salters in the mountains is that Wednesday before Thanksgiving, but even I’m skeptical about that. They’ve had them out a lot more in the highlands of West Virginia this year.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:41 am with sun having an altitude of 28.7° from the due south horizon (-42.1° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:51 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (238°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (245°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:34 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 13 seconds with dusk around 5:02 pm, which is 53 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the south-southwest (211°) at an altitude of 12° from the horizon, 231,427 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:38 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 53 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 45 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 6 seconds over today.

Dinner last night was 15-bean soup ๐Ÿฅ˜ but as I didn’t have enough soup, I cut up some spinach, celery, carrots, onions and added some smoked paprika to make it a meal, dipped in with lots homemade bread, this way the loaf without the shredded carrots. ๐Ÿฅ• As much as I like my bread with the carrots ๐Ÿž I find it really tough on my stomach and guts, so I might end up cutting that out for just whole-wheat bread with some oatmeal put in the mix. Or just only whole-wheat flour, if I want things to be fluffier. Dessert was Greek yogurt with too much canned 100% pumpkin and some pumpkin pie spice. Tasted good but I probably eat too much. I keep telling myself I need to get pie pumpkins ๐ŸŽƒ and make my own pumpkin up at home. It would save the can โ™ป๏ธ that I otherwise have to save for recycling. Rather compost then recycle, then tin cans usually still have a good market.

Last night I returned my library books ๐Ÿ“š to the library. I had a stack of books I haven’t read but I keep putting off returning them. I am spending my free time with the Udemy classes on Remote Sensing, so it’s not that I’m not learning, but it’s not with books. Most of the library books I get out are pretty out of date, and I am lazy and I just like watching video lectures, especially now that I get Udemy through my library for free. ๐Ÿ“ฑ There are so many great online resources I’m learning I can access with my library card, physical books aren’t the only way to keep up with the world. ๐ŸŒŽ Plus I like being able to snuggle under my heated blanket with the phone, rather then a book. That said, I’m usually dog tired by 8 or 8:30 PM as I get up at 5 AM each day, to start cooking. ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿณ

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 34 degrees at 1am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 9th. South wind 3 to 7 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 32 degrees. The record low of 7 occurred back in 1972.

Looking forward to that pea soup when I get home ๐Ÿต re-heated up with lots of good homemade bread and some balsamic vinegar. Just writing that makes me hungry. Not a real cool evening but it’s not exactly warm and with the sun set so early, it should be plenty cool by later in the evening.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, a chance of showers before 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 47. Northwest wind 10 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 45. Typical average high for the weekend is 48 degrees.

Turkey fans and turkey farmers will note that next Thursday is Thanksgiving ๐Ÿฆƒ when the sun will be setting at 4:28 pm with dusk at 4:57 pm. So early! On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 49 and 24 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 46 degrees. We hit a record high of 72 back in 1931.
