Still Some Snow

Bennett Hill still has some snow up top -- a few places with a foot or so of snow -- but those spots had 3-5 feet of snow on them, not that long ago.

A first draft of what my dream home would look like

Simple, small and cozy, different from the large suburban homes of today. By no means a tiny home which is defined as under 500 square feet but probably in the ratio of what would be considered a small house - 900 or so square feet which is roughly 30 feet by feet. I'm teaching myself CAD to see if I can design something a bit better looking before actively seeking out architectural and design services and reading up to learn about all things on building your own house.

Woke up this morning with a terrible pain in my shoulder ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป

Started bothering me during the weekend but this morning it’s incredibly sore. Apparently all that tumerac that left my hands yellow over the weekend was not enough to arrest the pain. I’m growing old and it’s just been a stressful few weeks. So much change, so little time.

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Sunny and 13 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž Calm wind. Things will start to thaw out at around noontime. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

While I went for a morning bike ๐Ÿšฒ ride for about twenty minutes in the neighborhood, I am driving ๐Ÿš˜ into work today for the first time in years and the first time at the new office ๐Ÿข with acres of parking. As I don’t yet have the private office, I want to be able to talk to the mortgage bankers ๐Ÿฆ from the privacy ๐Ÿ” of my truck. Tomorrow I’ll ride in again, assuming my shoulder is okay enough. If anything the morning bike ride somewhat loosened up my shoulder and it’s a bit better. Cold though, even with my heavy duty biker gloves ๐Ÿงค and silk liners my fingers felt a bit chilly. Need to warm up my truck well before heading in today.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 37 degrees at 4pm. Typical for today. Calm wind becoming southeast around 6 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 56 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1930. 11.2 inches of snow fell back in 1977.โ„

New landlord replied back to my concerns and agreed ๐Ÿค๐Ÿป to allow me to pay rent via paper check and gave me permission to store my kayak ๐Ÿ›ถ outside. He also provided me with an address for written correspondence, which hopefully I’ll never need but you know when you have a financial relationship it’s important for both parties to protect their interest. ๐Ÿก Likewise when buying a house and land, I am insisting on having a seperate buyer’s and seller’s agent – if a realtor finds me a property they’re also selling – I will insist they step down as my agent on the buyer side. I also will shy away from a suggested title agent or inspector by the realtor unless I get an independent recommendation that agrees. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป It’s not about being an asshole but protecting one’s interests.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:10 pm with sun having an altitude of 36.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-34.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 8.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:54 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (249ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (256ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:33 pm after setting for 3 minutes with dusk around 6:01 pm, which is one minute and 17 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the east (92ยฐ) at an altitude of 44ยฐ from the horizon, 246,156 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:35 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 35 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 50 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 46 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 20 degrees at 4am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 23rd. South wind 5 to 7 mph. In 2023, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 27 degrees. The record low of -10 occurred back in 2015.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 28. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 40. Typical average high for the weekend is 38 degrees.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Last Day of Winter ๐Ÿ‚ when the sun will be setting at 7:08 pm with dusk at 7:35 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2023, we had partly sunny skies with snow showers and temperatures between 33 and 22 degrees. That sounds ugh) Typically, the high temperature is 46 degrees. We hit a record high of 78 back in 2012.

Corner of Mountain House

Well above normal of 35 degrees ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Mild but overcast start to the day with weather that feels more like late March then the end of the second week of February. It’s been a long week but at least the second half of the week has been fairly mild. Been able to ride to work four out of five days this week which hasn’t been bad.

Good morning! Mostly cloudy and 39 degrees in Delmar. โ˜ There is a south-southeast breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Monday around noontime. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Finished up the last of the frozen fruit in the freezer. ๐Ÿ’ I spend all this money on groceries for it to be gone by the second half of the week. ๐Ÿ˜ Seems to be eaten so quickly. Pancakes ๐Ÿฅž with shredded oranges topped with banana ๐ŸŒ and real maple ๐Ÿ syrup this morning. Also I’m almost through that big container of oatmeal. I find it hard to believe. Last night was Johnnycakes again – I enjoyed them so much for breakfast I decided to have them again tonight with left over chilly. ๐ŸŒถ

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 50 degrees at 3pm. 15 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 27th. South wind 8 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 48 degrees. The record high of 57 was set in 1925. 13.7 inches of snow fell back in 1906.โ„

Riding to work again. ๐Ÿšฒ Laid back in bed for a bit too long this morning after breakfast ๐Ÿ›Œ but I’m now going and will shower. Riding to work frees up a lot of time in the morning I would otherwise be doing the morning walk or doing the exercise loop out Meads Lane. ๐Ÿฎ Plus it saves that $1.30 bus fare and having to catch the shuttle to work. Almost enough light to safely ride home from work, maybe next week if it’s not too cloudy or cold. ๐ŸŒ†

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:10 pm with sun having an altitude of 32.6° from the due south horizon (-38.2° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 9.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:39 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (244°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (251°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:19 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 5 seconds with dusk around 5:47 pm, which is one minute and 19 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:22 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 48 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 8 mph. Tomorrow will have 10 hours and 23 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 35 seconds over today.

Yesterday was a great evening for the evening walk. ๐Ÿƒ‍โ™€๏ธ Totally had more Johnnycakes last night for dinner, similar to breakfast with loads of onions, garlic and spinach. No greek yogurt this time, but I did use some up some chilly on them. ๐Ÿฅž No complaints there, they were good. Then some shredded apple with cinnamon and ginger for desert. ๐Ÿ

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 37 degrees at 6am. 21 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 15th. South wind 5 to 7 mph. In 2023, we had light rain in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 34 degrees. The record low of -21 occurred back in 1948.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers, mainly after 11am. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 55 degrees at 2pm. 20 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 6th. South wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 51 degrees. The record high of 53 was set in 1955. 4.0 inches of snow fell back in 1892.โ„ Probably do some riding on Saturday, ๐Ÿšฒ maybe go down to the library. ๐Ÿ“š

Looking ahead to Sunday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 43. ๐ŸŒฅ Northwest wind 11 to 14 mph. Not as warm. Typical average high for the weekend is 35 degrees. Sunday doesn’t look to be quite as nice of a day, especially with the wind. The plan for Sunday is to go grocery shopping early ๐Ÿ›’ then out to the folks later and bake some bread to bring out there. ๐Ÿž

Looking ahead, there are 3 weeks until March ๐ŸŒจ when the sun will be setting at 5:46 pm with dusk at 6:13 pm. On that day in 2023, we had mostly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 39 and 20 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 40 degrees. We hit a record high of 66 back in 2017.

Cue the music, the DIRE EMERGENCY SNOW STORM is upon us ๐ŸŒจ

Aldis in Colonie was so packed with people yesterday, picked over grocery wise with people stocking up for the winter storm that is supposedly approaching today, I just turned around and left. I look across the street at the Market32 with the packed parking lot, and tossed my hands up knowing chances were slim I’d get any whole-wheat flour or other needed groceries. Best to wait until today, when the stockers have been able to restore the shopping experience by morning. I’ll just do Walmart after I shower this morning.

Good morning! Happy Soon to be Wet and Sloppy Sunday. ๐ŸŒง It seems like it rains every Sunday lately. Without fail. Rain loves the weekend. Clouds and 35 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜๏ธ Calm wind. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 6 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Decided I wanted pancakes today, ๐ŸŠ ๐Ÿฅž and I have a lot of oranges, so I decided to try out full-orange pancakes, milling both the orange and peal to make some rather zesty fully flavored pancakes with some lemon juice topped with some greek yogurt and honey. ๐Ÿฏ Wow did they come out good — that orange flavor really shined, especially some ginger, vanilla in the mixture. Finished up the remaining oatmeal I had in the mixture, along with the whole wheat flour and had to fall back onto using some rye flour, but it worked out well.

Today will rain and snow. ๐ŸŒง High of 35 degrees at 7am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 9th. Calm wind becoming north 5 to 8 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. Not going to stick more A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 45 degrees. The record high of 56 was set in 1916. 9.6 inches of snow fell back in 1897.โ„

Riding trail in the Albany Pine Bush was great yesterday ๐Ÿšต‍โ™€๏ธ ๐ŸŒฒ though by mid-day I was starting to feel a bit worn out from all the trail riding. The section off of Kings Road was closed due to them logging and using a tub grinder to chop up the black locus, blackberries and invasive trees as part of the restoration effort. ๐Ÿฆ‹ Ended up riding my bike around Morris and Curry Road to see what I could spot from the road both ecologically and development wise, to further educate myself for Save the Pine Bush. ๐Ÿ’ญ In the afternoon, after shopping at Salvation Army I decided to head up Balltown Road to Aquaduct, as I wanted to check out the old Aquaduct that once carried the second Erie Canal across the Mohawk River and then NY 146 until the 1964 bridge was completed, and the aquaduct demolished to improve the river’s flow and prevent ice jamming. Seems odd these days when Mohawk River ice jams are rare, because the river rarely jams up with so much ice. โ„๏ธ Climate change has changed a lot in our world. There was some ice on Mohawk River but not a lot. Then I rode my bike down the Erie Canalway to the ALCO Trail through that swanky new Mohawk Harbor development, then through the Stockade and Riverfront Park, then the Erie Canalway Trail to Lock 8 and ultimately out to I-890 – NY 5 Connector near Rotterdam Junction. ๐Ÿ›ฃ

While Aldis was insane yesterday, ๐Ÿ‘” I did luck out at the Salvation Army in Karner – Niskayuna – Lisha Kill or whatever the area off of Central Avenue and got two nice dressier shirts. The stuff you get there is nicer then anything you might find at Walmart and cheaper then going to a place like Macy’s or JC Pennies. Plus often much higher quality. Two really nice shirts for $9.60. Can’t beat prices like that. Not only are there wonderful deals at Salvation Army, you’re supporting their disaster and community development efforts. That place is a complete dump on the outside, with people leaving discarded furniture and trash all around it, but inside it really is the best thrift store to get really nice clothing, often for prices far below other thrift stores around. Not going to find anything that nice so cheap at Goodwill or one of the “high end” thrift store boutiques like in Delmar or Slingerlands. Also looked at lamps for my new office, ๐Ÿ›‹ but I’m going to wait until I move into my permanent office before committing to buying a desk lap, assuming I can’t find one in a storage closet somewhere. Thrift shop’s the way to go for that — I am thinking I can put a 150 watt equivalent bulb ๐Ÿ’ก in it as a bright desk lamp. I just hate the overhead florescent lighting.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:09 pm with sun having an altitude of 29.1° from the due south horizon (-41.7° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 10.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:21 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (238°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (246°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:03 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 11 seconds with dusk around 5:33 pm, which is one minute and 18 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:07 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and snow ๐ŸŒจ and temperatures around 34 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 8 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 54 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 14 seconds over today.

Tonight will snow, mainly before 4am. ๐ŸŒจ Low of 33 degrees at 5am. 18 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 5th. North wind 9 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible. Ain’t going to be much snow on the roads with that temperature, especially if they’re treated with the tons of deicing chemicals as they most certainly are. Maybe this week will be a good one to wash my truck. In 2023, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 22 degrees. The record low of -10 occurred back in 1925.

Looking ahead, there are 2 weeks until Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk Day ๐Ÿฅ› when the sun will be setting at 5:22 pm with dusk at 5:50 pm. I was totally getting teased the other day in my old office for being such a complainer. I know, I’m such a perfectionist. ๐Ÿ’Ž Cheap bastard too, but I’m saving all my money so I can blow it someday on land, ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐ŸŒพ goats ๐Ÿ, hogs, ๐Ÿท and cattle. ๐Ÿ„ I’ve been told cattle are the fastest way to be broke forever, maybe except for horses. ๐Ÿด Probably someday I’ll meet a girl who is as much a hillbilly as I’m and I’ll have to agree on horses in exchange for having a burn barrel and land. ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ›ข Actually, I think I complain about things, but it’s different from what others complain about. I don’t like working in suburbs, when so many others love the acres of parking for easy motoring and the convenience of avoiding crowded elevators, lol. ๐Ÿคฃ On that day in 2023, we had mostly sunny skies snow showers and temperatures between 38 and 23 degrees. I wouldn’t say that’s spilled milk, but a rather nice day. Maybe just a few drips of milk after the teats are stripped. ๐Ÿฎ Typically, the high temperature is 35 degrees. Going to be in the forties during this up coming week. We hit a record high of 59 back in 1981.

Recharge

Up after the teat strippers, lol ๐Ÿ„

Every morning I get the Morning Ag Clips newsletter delivered to my email box a little after 3 am. Who is up at that hour? Dairymen, nearly two hours before I wake up and get cooking and a jump on my day. After all, you gotta strip the teats before you milk the laddies so I can have cottage cheese with my eggs and milk in my coffee.

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. Rain and 43 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a west-southwest breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There are 3 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธStill too much snow to ride the bike into work on the rail trail, but regardless it’s still raining. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 2 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

I slept in late until 5:10 AM this morning, which really is about ten minutes later but I don’t set an alarm clock โฐ  so I get up when I wake naturally. I was in bed by 9 PM last night ๐Ÿ›Œ so eight hours later is about 5 AM though I woke briefly at 3 AM when I heard the Morning Ag Clips come in but I didn’t read until I was up and out of bed, loading the oven with bread and taking the seeds out of the spaghetti squash, getting it ready to cook. A good nights sleep, despite the warnings of high wind and severe weather, all I heard was a bit of rain on the roof.

Woke up feeling a bit achy this morning from the rain, ๐Ÿ˜ซ but I got some onions, spinach, corn, peppers eggs frying ๐Ÿณ with a bunch of turmeric, red chili pepper, and salt. Then coffee with lots of ginger and cinnamon. โ˜• Feeling good now. Baked up some rye bread, with lots of dill weed and chopped red onions. I find for a good crispy crust, adding some baking soda helps. The red onions give it a dark, rich texture, almost like pumpernickel. Also cooked up a big pot of 15-bean Cajun soup, but then I added a bunch of corn, celery, carrots and spinach to beef up the soup. Will be good with the rye bread later. To keep the oven full, also made spaghetti squash. Using up a lot of stuff in my pantry but I’ll go shopping either Thursday or Friday night, or maybe early Saturday morning.

Today will have a chance of showers, mainly between 11am and 3pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 44 degrees at 12pm. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 12th. I like mid March weather in January. Breezy, with a southwest wind 7 to 12 mph increasing to 16 to 21 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 41 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 38 degrees. The record high of 55 was set in 2016. 7.3 inches of snow fell back in 1984.โ„

I wasn’t going to ride my bike to work, ๐Ÿšฒ until I decided to do just that. I will take Delaware Avenue in I guess, because I think there is still snow and ice on the rail trail โ„๏ธ though I’d much rather take the rail trail and avoid traffic. ๐Ÿš‚ When I switch to the office in North Albany — maybe next week — if the rail trail is closed, I will take Second Avenue. I think there is less traffic there, and less risk of getting doored, ๐Ÿ’ฅwhich scares me as much if not more then getting rear-ended on the bicycle. Riding on Delaware Avenue, it’s constant looking ahead and looking backwards, compared to the relatively easy to ride down the rail trail. ๐Ÿšต‍โ™€๏ธ Once I’m fully moved the suburban office, I will be able to take Albany County Rail Trail to Corning Preserve, almost entirely off the road, then it will be an easy ride up Erie Bouelvard, through the old Lumber District.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:03 pm with sun having an altitude of 25.4° from the due south horizon (-45.5° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:57 pm with the sun in the southwest (233°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (240°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:41 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 21 seconds with dusk around 5:12 pm, which is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:48 pm. At sunset, look for rain showers around ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 40 degrees. Breezy, 21 mph breeze โ›… from the west-southwest with gusts up to 41mph. Today will have 9 hours and 19 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 19 seconds over yesterday.

I was pleasantly surprised that the blueberry pancakes I made yesterday ๐Ÿฅž didn’t cause me to have a blood sugar spike that I was afraid it would. Maybe it was because the pancakes were whole-wheat flour and some milled oats and made myself without added sugar or even bananas. Maybe using pure maple syrup ๐Ÿ in moderation helped. I do love the sweetness of blueberries ๐Ÿ’™ but it can come with an hour or two down the clock feeling really hungry and even a bit dizzy. But I was reading that such blood sugar troughs aren’t that uncommon for many people, and isn’t a sign of anything more serious besides bad dietary choices. I was looking at my online health record, and two times I got my blood and urine tested, my blood sugar levels were in normal levels and I didn’t have any glucose in my urine. ๐Ÿฅค I did have slightly elevated bile in my urine, a sign of some kidney damage probably back when I was more overweight, but I was barely outside of normal level, ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍โš•๏ธ nothing my doctor said I should be concerned about. I am super paranoid about diabetes these days, as I watch and it slowly saps the life away from my parents who are growing older. And I don’t like needles. ๐Ÿ’‰

Tonight will be mostly cloudy โ˜๏ธ, with a low of 29 degrees at 4am. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 24th. Breezy, with a southwest wind 14 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 38 mph. With that wind, I’ll probably need the heat again. โ™จ๏ธ  In 2023, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 19 degrees. The record low of -25 occurred back in 1968.

Last night was cold with the wind so I turned on both the gas heat down stairs and the space heater on as I was chilled through. ๐ŸŒง ๐ŸŒฌ It was absolutely pouring when I was waiting out for the bus, and when I got home things were cold and damp. Cooking in the oven the salmon ๐ŸŸ things warmed up, and then I kneaded up the bread ๐Ÿž. Also made some corn mush mixed with peanut butter powder which was pretty good. And then shredded and orange and had that with a warm glass of milk with cinnamon and ginger before bed. Eating good. Wish I had gotten more steps in yesterday, but I did do that seven mile ride in during the morning.

Still looks like the weekend starts out rainy, but then gets cold for the balance of the M.L. King weekend. ๐ŸŒฆ Saturday, rain, mainly before 1pm. High near 48. Breezy. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 31. Breezy. M.L.King Day will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 31. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees. I am not sure if it looks good for getting out of town, thinking it will be a swamp on Saturday and then frigid come Sunday. Maybe just one night. Things could change though.

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now will be Clean Your Computer Day ๐Ÿงน when the sun will be setting at 5:21 pm with dusk at 5:49 pm. The average high temperature is 33 degrees, with a record high of 55 in 2016. Now that’s depressing on the mercury front, but let’s be honest, not much beyond there, things start to warm up once again as we head into the second half of February. ๐ŸŒบ Spring will come eventually.
