Not a Real Fan of Thacher Park

For many years I would never go to John Boyd Thacher State Park. I never really liked the place — I thought it was too developed — too surbanized — too packed the gills with obnoxious people. Not a place to go for relaxation or scenic views but to be run over by joggers and bicyclists while taking in the view or doing nature study.

My hatred of John Boyd Thacher Park wore off over the years.
First in 2003, I started go occasionally to the back part of the park off of Beaver Dam Road after my college class let out for the day — usually once a week. It was nice going back there, especially around the ski hill inΒ  the evening, as you would never see to many people back there. Mostly undeveloped, wandering around the cleared paths in the brushy woods that were full of wildlife.

Then I “rediscovered” the OSI parcel, which is some “wild” lands to the north of the park. Especially on weekdays, and to certain extend on the weekends this area is quite nice, quite and wild. Most of the surburbanites in their SUVs avoid this area for the developed parcels with the picinic tables and rails to discouage them from heading to close toΒ  the edge. But the OSI parcel is a totally different experience.

While I like the OSI parcel with its views, if I have other choices I’ll go to other wild lands with even fewer restrictions. I don’t like how Thacher Park closes at dusk, you can’t go for moonlit walks or camp there like on state forests. There just seems to be so many restrictions compared to other wild lands around to explore.

Saturday at Thacher Park with Blackie 🚡

That’s the plan for today after the morning walk. Shower, finish cooking some brown rice and lentils up head out to the Nature Bus around 9:20, be to Thacher Park by 9:50. Then whatever until 6:20.

Good morning! Happy Saturday. A little cooler for the weekend! Mostly cloudy β›… and 68 degrees in Delmar for the morning walk 🚢 pm this Saturday morning. Calm wind. The dew point is 64 degrees. Not going to be a real nice weekend, the skies will clear Monday around 4 pm.

Lots of people out walking 🚢 and riding this morning but it’s already gotten hot and sticky. Hopefully it will be cooler when I get up to Thacher State Park 🏞 up on the hill. Otherwise I figure I can just relax on the hammock with a good book. πŸ“– No real plans for today besides just hanging out at Thacher Park. That and bake the bread I have rising today. Decided to do whole wheat bread with a kneaded recipe this time – still just the simple whole wheat, water, yeast and a bit of salt. Next week looks to be cool and may be an excellent week to use up a bunch of fresh and frozen vegetables in the freezer for soup. πŸ₯£

The mornings and evenings are dark but it’s hot πŸŒ‡

Not so much heat and humidity at this hour but certainly later on. That said with the earlier sunsets and lower sun angle it cools off by evening but still rather sticky.

Good morning! What day is it? A dark start to the Hump Day, of course. Held off my morning walk for a while, because it was so dark. Fog 🌫 and 69 degrees in Delmar, NY for the morning walk in Delmar. Calm wind. The dew point is 67 degrees. The muggy weather ends next Tuesday around noontime. πŸ˜“ Summer arrived in September.

Out walking this morning, though I held off a bit before it got a brighter out. πŸŒ‡ In the mean time I was down in my kitchen kneading some quick-rise dough with baking powder to make a crust to use with the eggs, spinach, and tomatoes. πŸ… Mom brought over a big basket of tomatoes, which not wanting them to go bad, I took several of the paste tomatoes ran them through the food processor, added Italian spices and roasted red pepper a bit of salt, cooked them down in a frying pan πŸ₯˜ with onions, then fried up some eggs and put it on top with parmigiana cheese. Good breakfast. Wish I had made up more coffee rather then reheating what I have but time is getting late — and I’m drousey.

Going to ride Blackie to work again 🚡‍♀️ and then probably take the bus back home in the evening as it’s going to be another hot one. Burn some calories, save a buck thirty. It’s always nice going down to the gorge, and the Madison Avenue Hill isn’t that bad now I’ve done it a lot of times. 🚌 I figure in the evening, I’ll ride down to the old Union Station on Broadway, catch the express back home. It wouldn’t be pleasant paddling through the gorge, though neither will be the traffic riding on the bus this evening, but at least it will be air conditioned most likely and I’m not driving. πŸ˜… πŸš— πŸš™ πŸš• 🚌

Last night I got home after taking the bus 🚍 had a quick dinner, ran down to the library πŸ“š and got the books I had on reserve, came home sat in bed next to the fan πŸ› read for a while and was asleep by nine. Tired and it was hot. I think this was the first really hot and humid day of the summer. In September, after Labor Day I know. Eat probably too much frozen mango and peaches but it made things nice and cool.

This weekend, while not looking all that great, might still be good for heading out to Thacher Park on the Nature Bus 🚌 for a while and doing some biking 🚡‍♀️ and reading πŸ“š in the hammock, and enjoying things, assuming it’s not too wet. Certainly it’s easy and quick now with the more direct bus to Thacher Park and the bike. Plus it would be good to cut expenses at least this week, because it’s been an expensive few weeks with all the trips I’ve been doing plus the healthier food I’m putting into my body. 🍏 I wasn’t thrilled to hear that people expect gas prices to remain high all autumn — that said I”m still thinking about some kind of big autumn trip with lots of smaller ones, before snow flies. But if all else fails, there’s always Rensselearville State Forest for a weekend trip.

A pleasant evening last night before the rain later today. 🌧️

For the first time in a while I sat out back until late into the evening. After a hot day it was a very pleasant evening. Today is more cloudy and humid, a lot of rain is on tap for the next few days.

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Clouds and 70 degrees in Delmar for the morning walk out to Five. ☁ Calm wind. The dew point is 68 degrees. The skies will clear Tuesday around 2 am. But first, 4-6 inches of rain. β˜” Best to get my steps in early. πŸ‘£

Walking 🚢 out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center which may be one of the last times in the near future. Bicycling will be so much quicker, even if I take the long way to avoid traffic and hills. This morning to change it up, heading out Fisher Boulevard and will walk back Delaware Ave, though that way is a bit more narrow. Already when the sun is out I’m feeling the humidity. 😰 Really dripping in that sweat.

Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2pm, then rain and thunderstorms likely between 2pm and 5pm, then rain likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5pm. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 80 degrees. The record high of 103 was set in 1936.

After I do my walk 🚢 I’ll probably cook up the chicken πŸ” for the week and lunch. Hot day for turning on the oven but I figure I’ll take a cold shower after cooking and then I’m heading out to the folks house in the evening which with the rain should give time for everything to cool down. 🍲 Home cooked chicken breast are so much healthier than the frozen ones and I can refreeze them. Also will toast the remaining chickpeas I have soaked. 🍘

Yesterday besides getting a bicycle 🚲 and going shopping πŸ›’ it was a very hot and humid kind of quiet day. Besides the morning walk around the park I ended going back to the town park 🏞 to watch the sun set and went to the library πŸ“š for a few hours to heat the heat. I thought about plinking down the seven or eight bucks to swim in the town park pool πŸŠβ€β™‚οΈ but being do hot and humid you never know when a thunderstorm β›ˆ would come rolling through. One clap of thunder and the pool closes for a half hour. πŸ’Έ I tried making hummus and that was a disaster after buying expensive Tanani sauce. I paid good money for the ingredients, I’m going to have to try again. πŸ˜–

Red Tailed Hawk

Lately I've been doing more evening bird watching hikes at the Elm Avenue Town Park after work. Spotted this nice red tail hawk on one of the fingers of the Phillipin Kill.

Taken on Monday April 19, 2021 at Elm Avenue Town Park.

Earlier today I did my net worth calculation πŸ’΅ and I am finally above water again as I’ve saved some more money and the markets have partially rebounded. πŸ“Š That said, I’m looking at the market fundamentals and corporate profits and the inability of the fed to slow inflation much, I think it might be a another bad year in the market. But I guess I’m acquiring assets for less now that will grow.
