Happy Earth Day! ๐ŸŒŽ

Going to be a beautiful day for riding to work. Carrot pancakes, need to stop at Hannaford to get bananas on the way in as a snack as I’ve not been shopping this week. Felt good to toss that empty plastic milk bottle in the trash on Earth Day knowing soon enough I’ll get it burnt, lol. Makes an excellent fire starter. Gotta celebrate Vladmir Lennin’s birthday with a little black smoke, as you turn the dirt with your plow or spreading manure on this Earth Day.

Good morning! Mostly sunny and 39 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 3 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Didn’t get a real early start ๐Ÿ› as when I first awoke I had a bit of nausea like I had been spinning. ๐ŸคฏBut once I finally got out of bed, got some coffee and carrot ๐Ÿฅ• pancakes ๐Ÿฅž in me I was feeling better. I think I just have a bad case of the Monday’s. I am looking forward to the ride to work today, going to be a nice day. The weekend was cloudy, colder and wetter then expected but I had a lot of fun in the woods and a nice fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ, rode some trail ๐Ÿšต and went for a nice five mile hike at Huyck Preserve.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 55 degrees at 5pm. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 7th. Northwest wind around 10 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 68 degrees. The record high of 86 was set in 1985. 1.0 inches of snow fell back in 1928.โ„

Going to stop on the way to work and get some bananas and apples at Hannaford ๐ŸŽ ๐ŸŒ Got to fuel up for the busy week ahead, and I like having lots of fresh fruits and veggies to snack on when I’m in the office.  ๐Ÿคค On the bike ride home I will stop and get more onions ๐Ÿง… and frozen fruit and veggies, and try to use up what I have around the apartment rather then doing a full grocery shop ๐Ÿ›’ until at least Wednesday, as I want to get down to the park after work to walk and read.  ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿ“š๏ธ I figure why fire up Red and spend a bunch of money on groceries ๐Ÿ›ป when I have a fair amount bar the fruit and vegetables, ๐Ÿ„ which I can pick up riding to and from work. Also need to get more milk at Stewart’s. I know more plastic!

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 59.8° from the due south horizon (-11.1° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:07 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (282°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (288°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:46 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 2 seconds with dusk around 8:15 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the east-southeast (119°) at an altitude of 16° from the horizon, 250,219 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:52 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 51 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 46 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 40 seconds over yesterday.

I think it’s interesting how the greenies this year are focusing on single use plastics ๐Ÿ’š on Earth Day. Gets a little bit silly but I think they needed a new issue as they got their climate legislation through on the state level ๐ŸŒŽ but only time will tell what the effect is beyond using a lot of farm land and forest for massive solar farms. I’d be more concerned about the really toxic things in garbage today like all the electronics commonly discarded. โ˜ ๏ธ Or all the wasted building materials not the silly little plastic water bottles that are a tiny part of waste production made out of the least toxic forms of plastic – polyethylene. โ™ป I really should get milk ๐Ÿฅ› delivery set up with Meadow Brook but it’s a pain having to call as they don’t have a website, and at least in the winter months I do recycle most of the discarded Stewart’s milk bottles. I wish they still had milk in glass for less trash like Byrne Dairy does. ๐Ÿฎ I don’t drink as much milk as I once did since getting into healthy eating, preferring to drink more water from the tap, ๐Ÿšฐ but I still think those milk bottles take up much too much room in the trash or the recycle  โ™ป๏ธ when so inclined.

Tonight will be clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 31 degrees at 4am. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 1st. Northwest wind around 6 mph becoming south after midnight. In 2023, we had thunderstorm in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 43 degrees. The record low of 26 occurred back in 1975.

First half of the weekend looks decent Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 62. Maximum dew point of 41 at 4pm. โ˜€ Not too bad but certainly can change. Sunday, a chance of showers. ๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ Mostly cloudy, with a high near 68. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 53 at 3pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 65 degrees. It is what it is, good I got out last weekend.

I am not opposed to doing a three-day weekend and heading up to the Adirondacks  ๐Ÿ•๏ธ  but only f the weather looks good. It would be nice to spend some time in the wilderness, have a good fire  ๐Ÿ”ฅ and ride trail or explore the back country  ๐Ÿšต before black flies are out in mass, ๐ŸฆŸ but only if the weather ain’t shit. ๐Ÿ’ฉ I kind of want to wait until things green up  ๐ŸŒฑ before heading out to Schoharie County to camp, and eat fresh ramps I found in the woods, and ride the Catskill Scenic Trail from Stamford to Bloomville ๐Ÿšต‍โ™‚๏ธ and back again, enjoying the colors of spring and the smell of all that freshly turned dirt.๐Ÿšœ Maybe that will be Mother’s Day Weekend.

Looking ahead, there are 9 weeks until Latest Sunset ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 8:38 pm with dusk at 9:12 pm. On that day in 2023, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 86 and 61 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1943.

Red, White, and Blue

December 4, 2020 Night

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 43 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a south breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 7 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Lately I’ve not been doing evening blog posts ๐Ÿ“ but it’s a fairly nice evening for sitting out back at least by December standards. ๐ŸŽ„ I have my coat ๐Ÿงฅ on but I’m comfortable as there isn’t a breeze. I figure the more time I spend outside, the less chances of catching the COVID.

Speaking of the COVID, ๐Ÿ‘พ that New York Times county level COVID data ๐Ÿค“ is quite interesting and I am going to experiment with it for making maps and other content for the blog over the weekend. I also want to do more reading ๐Ÿ“– on the book ๐Ÿ“™ I got about homesteading, ๐Ÿšœ and do some soldering projects. Definitely get dreaming about a better tomorrow, looking at all that rural land on Zillow. ๐Ÿฎ

Except for the rainy Tuesday morning and my lazy then rainy Monday ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป, I’ve been walking every 12 hours around the 2.5 mile super block around the high school ๐Ÿšธ. It’s good exercise although I a admit I’m getting a bit bored with it. It just feels so redudent but it’s good exercise and a safe walk at night without many road crossings although part of the walkway is pretty dark this time of year. I do go opposite directions in my morning and evening walks. No walking tomorrow with the cold rain expected.

Did a quick wash of my truck today, went to the store and the library to work. ๐Ÿ–ฅ I also bought a small space heater fan, โ™จ something I thought about getting for years but never did. But working at home this winter โ„ I wanted something I could turn on to quickly warm my hands ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป especially after walking outdoors without heating the whole apartment by raising the main gas radiators downstairs or the expensive to operate electric baseboard upstairs which I’m loath to operate and always stink the few times I do use them. Plus now I’m well stocked on groceries for the weekend. ๐Ÿฒ

Tonight will have a chance of rain, mainly after 4am. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 36 degrees at 4am. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 30th. South wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2019, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 28 degrees. The record low of 2 occurred back in 1989.

Tonight will have a Waining Gibbous ๐ŸŒ– Moon with 78% illuminated. At 10 PM, the moon was in the east-northeast (76ยฐ) at an altitude of 18ยฐ from the horizon, some 237,276 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by June 2nd. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ The Cold โ˜ƒ Moon is on Monday, December 21. The darkest hour is at 11:47 pm, followed by dawn at 6:39 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:10 am in the east-southeast (120ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 22 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and one second later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:55 am with sun in the southeast (128ยฐ). Tonight will have 14 hours and 48 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 11 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of rain before 10am, then a chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 38 degrees at 8am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 8th. Breezy, with a north wind 7 to 12 mph increasing to 16 to 21 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 36 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 38 degrees. The record high of 65 was set in 2001. 9.0 inches of snow fell back in 1902.โ„

Definitely a stay at home day tomorrow. ๐Ÿก But I will have plenty to occupy myself as long as I’m good and stay off social media. ๐Ÿ“ฑ I should just completely turn off my phone tomorrow. Maybe I will.

In four weeks on January 1 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (239ยฐ) at 4:32 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 10 minutes and 39 seconds later then tonight. In 2020 on that day, we had cloudy, mild temperatures snow showers and temperatures between 40 and 34 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 31 and 16 degrees. The record high of 57 degrees was set back in 1966.

I honestly don’t think 2020 was that bad, ๐Ÿค” certainly not for me. But I’m really ready for a new year and a new start. I kind of enjoyed all the oddities of 2020, made some good money and great memories โ›บ, traveling and working remotely. ๐Ÿ˜ท I guess the pandemic was kind of bad for a lot of folks but I liked the change. ๐ŸŽ„ And a Merry Christmas to you on three weeks. ๐ŸŽ…๐Ÿฟ

Looking ahead, Bake Cookies Day ๐Ÿช is in 2 weeks, Christmas ๐ŸŽ… is in 3 weeks, New Years Day 2021 ๐ŸŽ‰ is in 4 weeks, Bubble Bath Day ๐Ÿงผ is in 5 weeks and 38th Birthday ๐ŸŽ‰ is in 8 weeks.

 Struggling Fire

October 24, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 47 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒƒ There is a northwest breeze at 15 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 2 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

So far this autumn has been pretty warm most nights โ™จ, so freeze warnings โš  have been fairly occasional even though November is right around the corner. ๐ŸฆƒBut today was a more seasonable day so I’m not shocked ๐Ÿ˜ฒ. Warm enough earlier I had the windows open โฌœ but now they are definitely closed as it’s gotten cold. โฌ›

Exploring the Touhey Preserve was interesting ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿฟ๏ธ but it’s pretty small with only one loop trail and a few views but it’s certainly not something I’d make a special trip to visit. Five Rivers was about the same, ๐Ÿฆ ๐Ÿ•Š ๐Ÿฆ†๐Ÿฆ— maybe a bit more crowded than I would expect on a Saturday evening and the sun sets pretty early this time of year.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒŒ, with a low of 34 degrees at 6am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 4th. Northwest wind 7 to 15 mph. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 48 degrees. The record low of 19 occurred back in 1981.

Tonight will have a First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon with 64% illuminated. At 8 PM, the moon was in the south (178ยฐ) at an altitude of 28ยฐ from the horizon, some 241,886 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by April 26th. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ The Blue ๐Ÿ‘ป ๐ŸŒ Moon is on Saturday, October 31. ๐ŸŽƒ The darkest hour is at 12:40 am, followed by dawn at 6:52 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:20 am in the east-southeast (106ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes Sunrise is one minute and 13 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 8:00 am with sun in the east-southeast (112ยฐ). Tonight will have 13 hours and 22 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 42 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 50 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 10th. North wind around 7 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 58 degrees. The record high of 77 was set in 1963. There was a dusting of snow in 2005.โ„

Cool ๐Ÿ˜Ž but sunny tomorrow. Not totally sure my plans but I want to spend some time outdoors ๐Ÿ‚like I did today. I probably should try to get to the store ๐Ÿ›’ and return my absentee ballot ๐Ÿ—ณ if the lines aren’t too long at the Early Vote place although maybe Monday would be best for that but it depends on how busy work is that day – I’d want to go before people get home ๐Ÿก from work and lines build. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿ˜ท Voting isn’t a bad idea ๐Ÿ’ก – but in no way in hell am I going to wait in line to do it especially when there are 55 hours of Early Voting remaining and 15 hours of Election Day voting ๐Ÿ—ณ to say nothing of just mailing โœ‰ the absentee ballot.

I was disappointed to hear the RIAA issued a cease and desist order to get the youtube-dl program ๐Ÿ“บ โฌ‡๏ธ taken down from github. While I have the software for now I’m sure the YouTube website ๐Ÿ•ธ will be updated and the old program won’t no longer work. So no more downloading YouTube videos to watch at home. That said, I’m sure there will be other websites off shore that I can go to download YouTube videos or maybe even other non United States sites will provide updates to youtube-dl. ๐Ÿ—บ One good thing about the internet is that if one country takes something offline it typically goes off shore, especially with software that has many legal uses and with something like this that’s a python script that is easy to patch and fix.

In four weeks on November 21 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (243ยฐ) at 4:27 pm (Standard Time),๐ŸŒ„ which is one hour, 31 minutes and one second earlier then tonight. The record high of 70 degrees was set back in 1931.

Yes, pretty much Thanksgiving at that point. ๐Ÿฆƒ It won’t be long until it’s November which is usually my favorite month of the year. Going to be a busy November this year with work but I’m kind of looking forward to working downtown more next month ๐Ÿข, especially if they finally restore the express bus ๐Ÿš service.

Looking ahead, Regular Deer Season in Southern Zone ๐ŸฆŒ is in 4 weeks, Small Business Saturday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ is in 5 weeks, Repeal of Prohibition Day ๐Ÿบ is in 6 weeks, Christmas Eve ๐ŸŽ… is in 2 months, Boxing Day ๐ŸฅŠ is in 9 weeks, Static Electric Shock Day ๐Ÿงผ is in 11 weeks, National Cheese Lovers Day ๐Ÿง€ is in 13 weeks, Save the Pine Bush Turns 43 ๐Ÿฆ‹ is in 15 weeks, 5:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 17 weeks and Snow Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 18 weeks.

October 4, 2020 Night

Good evening! Moon lit fog and 47 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒซ Calm wind. Another nice moon lit night for my evening walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป ๐ŸŒ– with temperatures starting to cool off a bit.

It was nice hiking up at Partridge Run ๐Ÿฆ† although while I saw some common field birds and a few Ruffled Grouse not a lot of wildlife but it may have been the time of day. ๐Ÿฟ So many chipmunks but the woods is so full of rodents lately.

Had a really nice Sunday dinner with the folks ๐Ÿฒ and brought home some leftovers for later in the week. I had to tap my brakes when I saw a deer ๐ŸฆŒ and it fell off the seat but it was fine. Also mom made a good apple ๐Ÿ pie ๐Ÿฅง.

Tonight will have patchy fog after 2am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒซ with a low of 43 degrees at 4am. Typical for tonight. Calm wind. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 34 degrees. The record low of 26 occurred back in 1965.

I decided to close the windows tonight, โฌ› because the past few mornings have been very cold for waking up. While I doubt I’ll turn the heat on for at least another month or so โ™จ it’s cold enough at night now that I think ๐Ÿค” I’ll be closing the windows before bed at least a few times a week.

Tonight will have a Waining Gibbous ๐ŸŒ– Moon with 90% illuminated. At 10 PM, the moon was in the east (89ยฐ) at an altitude of 20ยฐ from the horizon, some 251,380 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by April 13th. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ The New ๐ŸŒš Moon is on Tuesday, October 20. The darkest hour is at 12:45 am, followed by dawn at 6:29 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:57 am in the east (95ยฐ) and last for 2 minutes and 54 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:35 am with sun in the east-southeast (102ยฐ). Tonight will have 12 hours and 26 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 66 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 1st. Maximum dew point of 48 at 12pm. Light south wind. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 59 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1941.

Should be a nice Monday to get down to work. ๐Ÿ’ผ Probably work down at the library parking lot ๐Ÿ…ฟ for a while and then out back. With the sun setting early not a lot of time to get down to the park ๐Ÿž after work these days.

My boots ๐Ÿ‘ข are in rough shape so I need to order tomorrow replacements. Probably just the same type I have and get them online to ensure they have my size without having to make a special trip to the store ๐Ÿฌ to buy them.

In four weeks on November 1 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (251ยฐ) at 4:47 pm (Standard Time),๐ŸŒ„ which is one hour, 43 minutes and 14 seconds earlier then tonight. Standard time starts that day. In 2019 on that day, we had cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 70 and 42 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 54 and 35 degrees. The record high of 78 degrees was set back in 1950.

Looking ahead, November ๐Ÿฅง is in 4 weeks, Day After Election Day ๐Ÿ›€ is a month away, First Sunday of Advent โœ๏ธ is in 9 weeks, Average High is 40 ๐ŸŒจ is in 2 months, Saint Nicholas Day ๐ŸŽ… is in 9 weeks, Latest Sunrise of the Winter ๐ŸŒ„๏ธ is in 13 weeks and Valentines Day โค๏ธ is in 19 weeks.
