Looking for state land to wheel on? This list shows all of the conservation department-maintained DEC truck trails and public access roads that are more then a 1/2 mile long. This roads are varied, but most of them are dirt roads that take you through the back country. Town maintained roads through state forests are generally not shown on in this listing.

DEIS on 2013 Amendments to the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan

July 15, 2013

James E. Connolly, Deputy Director, Planning
Adirondack Park Agency
Post Office Box 99
1133 State Route 86
Ray Brook, NY 12977

Dear Mr. Connolly:

Β RE:Β  DEIS on 2013 Amendments to the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan

Β The Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement fails to provide all β€˜reasonable alternatives’ in its review of possibilities, by failing to include the option of classifying the lands of Essex Chain Tract, Indian River Tract, OK Slip Tract, and Open Space Conservancy (OSC) Tracts as β€˜Wild Forest’ in their entirety.Β  A reasonable person could conclude that providing such a β€˜Wild Forest’ classification, as part of the review, is required under the analysis mandated by ECL 8-0109 (β€œreasonable alternatives under SERQA”) and the Executive Law 816 (β€œstate land plan for Adirondacks”).

While Alternative 4A (β€œNew Land as Wild Forest with a Wilderness Corridor Along the Hudson River”) comes close to a pure β€˜Wild Forest’ option, I would strongly recommend that the agency consider creating an Alternative 4C, with a β€˜Wild Forest’ option, and ultimately adopt the Alternative 4C, pure β€˜Wild Forest’ option, to preserve access to existing roadways, as felt necessary and proper by the Department of Environmental Conservation.

A pure β€˜Wild Forest’ option would continue to allow use many of the existing roadways to provide access to the interior of these lands that exists today, under private ownership to existing camps and facilities. Nobody is proposing the construction of new roads or expanded motor vehicle access to this area, indeed such a provision would be violative of Article XIV of the state’s constitution, which states, β€œ…nor shall the timber thereon be sold, removed or destroyed.”

East

The unique provisions of the state’s constitution will prevent excessive development and use of these lands. In Association for Protection of Adirondacks v MacDonald (253 N.Y. 234, affg 228 App Div 73, 1930), it was decided that most cutting of trees in the forest preserve by the DEC was prohibited. A state-owned bob sleigh run was prohibited from being built in state forest preserve.

Β β€œThe Adirondack Park was to be preserved, not destroyed. Therefore, all things necessary were permitted, such as measures to prevent forest fires, the repairs to roads and proper inspection, or the erection and maintenance of proper facilities for the use by the public which did not call for the removal of the timber to any material degree. The Forest Preserve is preserved for the public; its benefits are for the people of the State as a whole.” (emphasis added)

No new facilities on these lands may be constructed that require the cutting of timber, beyond a β€œmaterial degree” as defined in MacDonald and subsequent decision in Balsam Anglers Club v. DEC (153 Misc. 2d 606, 1991), which continued to hold that DEC could not cut any material amount of timber, although a small amount of brush removed to conduct a hiking a trail would be permissive.

Further restrictions on public motor vehicle use in β€˜Wild Forest’ lands under 1935 opinion of Attorney General John J. Bennett, Jr., who stated it would be unlawful to create new public roads within forest preserve, without amending the state constitution. Mr. Bennett’s opinion permitted the DEC to create new β€œtruck trails” for administrative use and forest-fire prevention, however if such truck trails were to be built, the public would be banned from use of them.

Therefore, Adirondack Park Agency (APA) should not be concerned or fearful about an expansion of motorized transportation in this areas, but should continue to allow existing access roads where deemed necessary and proper by the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

Sandy Plains

Moreover, the APA is not constrained, on their classification of these parcels. The controlling law is Executive Law 816, which simply requires the APA to create a plan, and for the DEC to follow it. The statue allows for the APA to amend their plan, at will, when acquiring new parcels or meet contemporary uses of land, as long as it is consistent with the state constitution’s prohibition on the removal of timber.

A β€˜Wild Forest’ classification, with the protections provided under state constitution is what is needed for these lands. This would keep most of the existing interior roads open for low-speed, controlled motor vehicle travel, for access to the Hudson River, campsites, and the many ponds and trail heads up mountains. Let the DEC then decide which existing interior roads to convert to hiking trails, based on terrain and sensitive environmental areas.

Additionally, a β€˜Wild Forest’ classification would keep existing interior roads open to snowmobiles in winter and ATV access in the summer and fall including hunting seasons. Again, exact routing of such corridors should be left to the DEC in their creation of the Unit Master Plan (UMP). Likewise, hiking trails should be designated in the UMP, and may be created either following existing routes, or new routes, under the authority granted by the court in Balsam Anglers Club.

To be clear, current precedence and practice allows roadside camping, with a small trailer or pickup truck with a camper top, is allowed in Wild Forest-area in designated areas. As such, I would call for an amendment to the APSLMP, as part of the plan to strike the road β€œtent” from the description of campsite, as designated under Wild Forest. All other provisions, including the ΒΌ mile separation should remain for campsites in Adirondack Park.

Units with existing, department-designed roadside campsites, and no prohibitions on small vehicular campers include the following Wild Forests: Aldrich Pond, Black River, Debar Mountain, Ferris Lake, Horsehoe Lake, Jessup River, Independence River, Moose River, Saranac Lake, Sargent Ponds, Taylor Pond, Vanderwhacker, and Wilcox Lake – all of largest wild forests. Roadside camping is popular activity on many back roads, and is not only allowed in many designated sites in New York State, but is common in National Forests in neighboring states, such as Pennsylvania and Vermont. The impact on existing ecosystems is minimal, as the land is already impacted by existing motor vehicle traffic traveling on these roads.

Finally, the Adirondack Park Agency should carefully review the resolution, β€œResolution in Support of the Upper Hudson Recreational Hub Request for Maximum Access to Unclassified State Lands,” by the Adirondack Association of Village and Towns in making their classification decision for these lands. Setting out a dramatic vision for these lands, they would protect the existing wild forest character of these lands, while maximizing the public use of these lands, which were ultimately paid for with our taxpayer dollars.

Thank you for reviewing these comments. I look forward to reviewing the revised DEIS.

Sincerely,

Andy Arthur

Beaver Dam

Β Resolution in Support of the Upper Hudson Recreational Hub

Request for Maximum Access to Unclassified State Lands

Resolution Date: 3 June 2013 at the Membership Meeting of the Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages

Moved By: Supervisor Farber, seconded by Supervisor MonroeΒ  CARRIED

WHEREAS, Governor Cuomo has announced the State’s acquisition of 69,000 acres of the former Finch Pruyn and other Nature Conservancy Lands; and

WHEREAS, Governor Cuomo has stated that this agreement will make the Adirondack Park one of the most sought after destinations for paddlers, hikers, hunters, sportspeople, and snowmobilers, and that opening these lands to public use and enjoyment for the first time in 150 years will provide extraordinary new outdoor recreational opportunities, increase the number of visitors to the North Country and generate additional tourism revenue; and

WHEREAS, the five Towns in the Adirondack Park most affected by this acquisition wish to realize the maximum benefit of increased tourism revenue; and

WHEREAS, the five Towns consisting of Indian Lake, Long Lake, Minerva, Newcomb, and North Hudson wish to work together to achieve the maximum economic benefit to the region from the increased tourism and have now formed the Upper Hudson Recreation Hub; and

WHEREAS, these tracts of land have an extensive network of maintained roads formerly used as logging and access roads; and

WHEREAS, the Upper Hudson Recreation Hub is in agreement that the only path to realize the maximum economic benefit of this land acquisition is to provide the utmost access to the public to the ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, and trails and that access should be provided to all citizens including the elderly, handicapped, disabled and physically challenged; and

WHEREAS, the Upper Hudson Recreation Hub is also in agreement that all forms of recreational activities to include, but not be limited to, hiking, canoeing, camping, skiing, snowmobiling, mountain biking, horseback riding, dog sledding, and the use of ATV’s be permitted; and

WHEREAS, the Upper Hudson Recreation Hub is of the opinion that the “Gooley Historical Society” be permitted to preserve and maintain the Outer Gooley Farmhouse, a building of historical significance that would be a learning tool for current and future generations and the loss of this valuable asset would be truly disrespectful to our Adirondack Ancestors; and ..

WHEREAS, the Upper Hudson Recreation Hub agrees that the proposal to surplus the Boreas Pond Lodge and support buildings would be a complete waste of a valuable asset that could be used for many purposes such as training and education, as an information center, an outpost, or as lodging; and

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages wholeheartedly supports the position of the Upper Hudson Recreation Hub, in its honorable efforts to achieve the greatest economic benefit from this purchase by requesting that the State classify these lands in away that promotes the maximum access to the ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, and trails by all citizens, including the elderly, handicapped, disabled and physically challenged; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages strongly oppose any land use and classification that does not allow for all forms of recreational activities to include, but not be limited to, hiking, canoeing, camping, snowmobiling, skiing, mountain biking, horseback riding, dog sledding, and the use of ATV’s; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages fully supports the continued maintenance and preservation of the Outer Gooley Farm House, a place of historical significance where early settlers tried to farm and run a sporting camp; where there was a discovery of hand dugout canoes; where Heavyweight boxer Gene Tunney trained; and where Senator Bobby Kennedy launched his raft into the Hudson River, and, if not preserved, would be the loss of an invaluable asset that could be used as a learning center for present and future generations; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages fully supports the continued use of Boreas Pond Lodge and support buildings that could be used for many purposes such as training and education, as an information center, an outpost, or as lodging; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution be sent to Governor Andrew Cuomo, Commissioner Joe Martens, Senator Elizabeth O’C Little, Senator Hugh T. Farley, Assemblyman Daniel G. Stec, Assemblyman Marc W. Butler, Adirondack Park Agency Chairwoman Leilani Ulrich, DEC Region 5 Regional Director Robert Steggeman and DEC Region 5 Regional Natural Resource Supervisor Thomas Martin.

What Do I Need for a Night in the Wilderness.

Back when I was in Boy Scouts when we did backpacking, we did often did with about fifty pounds on our backs, and honestly it wasn’t a lot of fun. When I start doing some wilderness camping myself this summer, I want to pack as little as possible, but have the supplies to camp in relative comfort.

  1. Camping hammock – A camping hammock provides a comfortable place to sleep, without having to bring a sleeping pad or tent.
  2. Bug Net and bug spray – I need to get a bug net to use over my camping hammock. This is especially critical during black fly season but throughout the year, mosquito could be obnoxious while sleeping in the wilderness, especially near a lake.
  3. Two or three cigarette lighters – Lighters are important for starting fires, which will provide light, warmth, and a way to cook without bringing a camp-stove back in wilderness.
  4. Trowel – For burying poop, digging out a fire pit,
  5. Rope – For hanging the bear bag, hanging up the tarp.
  6. Water – Sufficent water for hiking, plus at night at camp.
  7. Small pot and frying pan – For boiling water if necessary, cooking on the fire.
  8. Old cloth bag – For storing food in a bear bag.
  9. Map and compass – For navigating. I rarely use a compass, but if I were to get off a trail, I could use it to navigate back onto the trail.
  10. Two or three flashlights – Flashlights break. Batteries go dead. I want to make sure I have light at night in the wilderness.
  11. Camera – For making videos and taking photos of what I’ve seen.
  12. Cellphone – For entertainment, journaling, listening to music and podcast. Might be handy in emergencies, and it’s fun to check out my exact location on the GPS, when I can find a land mark to orient myself on the trail
  13. Additional Battery Pack – To charge my phone at night, so I can have all night entertainment, music, podcasts, journal.
  14. Extra socks, pair of underwear and t-shirt. Wet clothes can be miserable. While I doubt I would need a full change of clothes, I think having a pair of socks, underwear, t-shirt is a good thing.
  15. Toilet paper – Self explanatory, it cleans up better than leaves. I’d burn it, rather then let it become litter, even if it’s burried.
  16. Small first aid kit – Just some bandages, wet wipers in small plastic bag.
  17. Multi-function Knife – For anything I’d need to cut at camp. Maybe also a bigger knife, especially during hunting season
  18. Candles – To provide additional light at camp.
  19. Flags – American flag and Don’t Tread on Me flag for decoration.

Food and meals … I want to keep things as light and simple as possible, not requiring much cooking.

  1. Water – Few things are as critical as having sufficient clean water to drink. I would probably add a shot of cider vinegar to get rid of that nasty off-taste that water sometimes has locally from the minerals.
  2. Frozen Hot Dogs, Beans/Canned Veggies or Soup – Something lightweight that wouldn’t require a lot of wait. Ideally, I’d avoid canned goods, that require the can to be carried out at the end of the trip.
  3. Cookies – Calories for energy, that are tasty for a dessert.
  4. Oatmeal – For breakfast, that is quick and easy. I could boil water for that. I probably would skip coffee for breakfast.

A few other things I might want to think about bringing …

  1. Small Tarp – While I probably wouldn’t back country in rain, it might be handy for a pop up thunderstorm.
  2. Beer – I might bring a can or two of beer to enjoy by the fire at night.
  3. Fishing pole/night crawlers/few bobbers/hooks – For fishing during the summer months to pass time, additional source of food. Not going to bring my full fishing kit. Place in small plastic bags.
  4. .22 rifle – During small game season for harvesting squirrel or rabbit. I would put it on a sling and care over the shoulder.

My goal is simple: have things that can be carried in a small, lightweight backpack that would make exploring the wilderness fun, not too bogged down.

How I got started on my healthier eating habits πŸ’

In January when I was doing my Mission Fifty plan, one of the areas I found most unaddressed was my diet.

Apples

I’ve always tried to eat relatively healthy, but it’s difficult living in modern America with so much food containing a lot of calories, especially sugar. Sugar ain’t just in candy and cookies. 🍚 They hide it everywhere in processed foods from hot dogs to pasta sauce. There is also a lot of fat in foods where you’re not thinking. πŸͺ Cheese is after all just dairy fat! Plus salt. πŸ§€ It’s bad how much salt there is in common canned goods, including canned vegetables like I used to use a lot a camp. The more you learn and more you look at the labels, the more horrified you become. πŸ” It’s everywhere, even canned tomatoes if you not careful. Even pasta and pasta sauce is pretty darn unhealthy with all the carbohydrates.

To be clear, I have never drunk much soda, eaten much fast food or had candy or cookies at home but it became painfully obvious that there was some serious holes in my eating habits as I turned 40. πŸ§“ I not only eat too much but I also eat way too much pasta, along with my love of cheese and dairy. πŸ§€ Whey too much carbohydrates with too little fiber — pun intended. 🍝 The carbohydrates, especially from the white pasta was further aggravating my soreness at times from Lyme Disease and just generally growing older. 😭 You can eat a lot of white pasta with pasta sauce, loading up on calories but not be filled up due to the lack of fiber. 🀰 Walking isn’t fun when you wake up all achy.

At times my blood sugar was all over the map, sometimes leading me to a manic phase where I would have an intense productive periods, other times when I would fall into a deep depressive state, unable to produce much of value. πŸ˜₯ I’m not sure if I’m pre-diabetic, but I certainly was heading that way. Then there was a constipation from all that cheese and pasta, the runs and terrible hangovers from over-consuming alcohol at camp, πŸ’© and general not wonderful health — even if I was burning a lot of calories. πŸƒ Maybe I could get away with in my younger years, but I’m no longer 20 or even thirty.

There were other things that also made me reconsider my diet. For one, the rising price of food. Inflation is painful lately, especially anything from animals that goes moo or oink. πŸ„ πŸ– Meat in particular has gone up a lot in price, but also pasta, cheese and sauce. Vegetables and rice in contrast have been much more consistent in price over the years. It’s also easier to buy them in bulk which means less plastic garbage to get rid off. β™» πŸ”₯ I can burn it, but plastic is kind of nasty and recycling is a pain to clean and pay to take the recycle center, assuming that the recycle isn’t just a creative detour to the landfill as it often is.

Even before the year and my plan started, most weeks I was walking more then 5 miles a day, often much more. 🚢 Most weeks were between 40-50 miles walked. But at the same time, I was looking at photos my face, winter camping, especially with the hoodie on and I was looking chubby especially in my face. Hiking up some of the big hills around was tiresome too. 🀰 But things got worse. Pushing forty, things were just getting more difficult to do the way I did them in my younger years. πŸ‘΄

Probably the gateway to my healthier lifestyle was having a fruit basket in my office and eating fruit throughout the day. That did much to stabilize my blood sugar, reduced my extreme cravings for quick carbohydrates when I got home, usually in large bowls of sugar and carbohydrate-rich pasta and red sauce. 🍎 Next I swapped out pasta for brown rice, which as a lot more fiber and is more filling. Started adding additional healthy things like lentils and beans, which really fill you up quickly with minimal calories. πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³ Evey week I make a big bowl of lentils, brown rice, and cooked dried beans of some sort as a base ration for many meals.

The next thing was cutting way back on dairy. I like farming, I like cows and dairy farming. But milk is calorie heavy, and calories become fat if you over-consume them. πŸ₯› Cheese is great, in moderation, something I didn’t do in the past. So many two-pound blocks of cheese I eat over the years. Macaroni and cheese, grilled cheese, slices of cheese with honey. πŸ§€ Washed down with milk of course! I added the ever flexible tofu — pressed and pulverized soy — as a healthier option to the dairy I used to consume so much of. Not because I’m anti-dairy, but I’m pro-health. 🍚

I cut back on my meat consumption, and boosted my vegetable intake. πŸ₯¦ Meat is wonderful as a treat, but it can pack in a lot of calories. And it lacks a lot of vitamins for all the fat and calories that it contains. To get healthy fats, I occasionally eat chicken and salmon, in moderation. 🐠 At first I started with frozen vegetables, but now I’ve been getting more fresh vegetables as it’s often more affordable and the taste is better. Plus greater flexibility for camping, as you can’t keep things frozen. πŸ• I learned love tomatoes, freshly chopped onions, peppers and even kale. πŸ§… πŸ… Always looking at new ways to get new green vegetables into my diet — I always have either spinach or kale in one or two meals a day. πŸ₯’

Once we get into the growing season, I am excited to be able to get more locally produced produce. And knowing that I like healthy, locally grown food means that when I own my own land I will be able to produce more of my own food. πŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈ Ravioli and pasta are great, but it’s not like you can grow them out back. πŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎ They come in paper and plastic garbage, they can’t be composted. In contrast, fruits and vegetables come in minimal to no packaging. πŸ—‘

I keep watching Youtube videos and reading about the latest in nutrient science and cooking, to learn about the building blocks of a healthy diet. πŸ“Ί I don’t get hung up above overly complicated recipes, but I do try to make things are healthy and don’t add a lot of unhealthy things to make them artificially sweet or give them tastes that aren’t natural. πŸ‘¨β€πŸ³ And I really enjoy all the new flavors I’m enjoying. Getting away from sugar and processed foods really brings back your sense of taste. 🍳 Feeling thinner and getting complements all of the time is great too. πŸ˜ƒ

String Cheese

It’s a journey and there is more to do. But I like where things are going.

February 5, 2023 Evening

Good evening! Can you believe another week has come and gone? I’m just glad we are done with the real cold for a while and I can turn down the heat and not freeze my butt off walking 🚢.

I find it hard to believe the first week of my forties has come and gone. πŸŽ‚ It was such an ordinary week, backgrounds and committee agendas, except for the carrot πŸ₯• cake they had for my birthday at the gang meeting. So sweet especially as I’ve cut almost all sugary substances out of my diet.

Mostly cloudy with filtered moon light and 38 degrees at the Delmar for the evening walk. ☁ There is a south breeze at 10 mph. πŸƒ. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️Temperatures will drop below freezing around 5 am. β˜ƒοΈ

Today I walked 🚢 ten miles between my morning, evening walks and Bennett Hill and over two miles with my parents dog 🐢 and then Wally World. I got needles so I can fix the missing button on one of my dress shirts πŸ•΄οΈand some more fruits and vegetables. I had plenty of pasta and juice πŸ₯€ and stuff like that as I’ve really been cutting back with my calorie reduction program, splitting meals 🍴 into two and freezing to save money πŸ’΅ and improve health. Over 22,000 steps for the day. πŸ‘£

Tonight will be cloudy ☁, with a low of 31 degrees at 5am. 15 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 30th. South wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light after midnight. Makes up for being so cold on Saturday. In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 12 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1948.

Ended up buying 4 1/2 of bananas at Wally World. 🍌 I think I may have gone bananas. πŸ’ But they were 53 cents a pound, which isn’t a good excuse for buying them, but I am trying to fit more healthy food into my diet, and bananas are a good snack, along with oranges, 🍊 which I brought into my office. Most of them were still green too, so they should be good all week. Started a compost container in the kitchen, as I don’t want to be dumping all those rhines in with kitchen burnables — they won’t burn well or at least I’ll want a hot fire πŸ”₯ before the try to burn them. But I can probably take them out to my parents house for composting if I ask. I know I need to live out in the country and have hogs. πŸ–

Watched a video about flossing your teeth better. 🦷 I have to admit I’ve not been good about flossing though I realize it’s not my fault as I doubt I was instructed as a child πŸ§’. While I don’t have soda or candy 🍬 at home and drink a lot of milk πŸ₯›, I’m a bit horrified how many people I went to school with have teeth problems or missing teeth in their forties. Children of Appalachia really don’t get the dental care they need but that’s in a large part how shitty health care is in America. My teeth aren’t perfect – I resisted getting extra braces and skipped dentist visits for a decade after college πŸŽ“ but they’re generally healthy bar some chips and that one filled cavity.

Been thinking about making an doctors appointment for a physical. πŸ‘¨‍βš•οΈ While I think I am generally healthy, it’s been a long time since I’ve gotten a good check over. I haven’t had my blood pressure checked in a number of years, weighted or general check up. I guess the value is limited, but there is no cost for the yearly physical and maybe I will find a health issue early before it becomes a problem. In my forties, I’m trying to be healthier, so when I own my own land, I will be able to enjoy it. 🐷

Tonight will have a Full 🌝 Moon. Yeap, you can see it through the clouds. At 7 PM, the moon was in the east (80°) at an altitude of 19° from the horizon, some 251,652 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. πŸš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by August 15th. Buckle up for safety! πŸ’Ί

The darkest hour is at 12:10 am, followed by dawn at 6:37 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:06 am in the east-southeast (111°) and last for 3 minutes and 7 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 9 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:47 am with sun in the east-southeast (118°). Tonight will have 13 hours and 47 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 29 seconds over last night.

I gassed up Big Red and gave him a bath. 🚿 The car wash was only four bucks as somebody left time on the machine which gave me time to pressure wash the under carriage. More big hunks of rust fell off, I need to paint the door it again. Going to spray WD 40 on it for the mean time. I was very low on gas β›½ as I hadn’t fueled up since before the Madison County trip so its not that big of deal but it was $85 in fuel. I know yikes, when I’m trying to cut expenses. 🀯 My next truck will be smaller I think. 🚚 If I had a farm and had to move cattle – maybe someday – I’ll want a big truck but right now it’s fun but excessively expensive to operate for the things I do. 🀠

Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny ☁, with a high of 42 degrees at 10am. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 6th. North wind 5 to 13 mph. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 36 degrees. The record high of 55 was set in 1991. 10.8 inches of snow fell back in 1978.❄

In four weeks on March 5 the sun will be setting in the west (263°) at 5:50 pm,πŸŒ„ which is 35 minutes and 38 seconds later then tonight. In 2021 on that day, we had partly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 31 and 15 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 41 and 23 degrees. The record high of 71 degrees was set back in 1964.

I Can Help You Make a Map

Geographic Information Services (GIS)MapsCartography πŸ—Ί

I am an amateur cartographer who designs maps and does a wide variety geospatial analysis using free and open-source geographic information software (GIS) and public sources of data to design quality maps, graphs, charts and datasets. I am looking for new and interesting projects to improve my skills, make connections and expand my portfolio.

Are you looking for my personal blog with it’s hiking, camping and outdoor recreation maps, along with a variety of charts, photos, and stories? Please visit andyarthur.org.

Mapping Avaliable

  • Tax/Property Mapping
  • High Resolution Aerial Photography
  • Recreational Maps – Hunting, Camping, Hiking
  • Georeference addresses using State Address Mapping service, plot them on a map
  • Wetlands, Topographic Contours, Land Cover
  • Compare historical aerial photos or maps to current photography
  • Web mapping using leaflet (HTML/Javascript file to embed on a website or use at home)

Example maps can found below.

Services Available

  • A list of property owners within 1,000 feet of a proposed development
  • How many cars per day pass a business?
  • How many people who live within 5 miles of a business or park?
  • How many African Americans and Hispanics live within 10 miles of Albany Pine Bush?
  • What are wealthiest election districts?
  • How many people ride public transit in a neighborhood?
  • How much of an area is wetland or farm field?
  • How big an interchange?
  • What is the average slope and elevation of an area or trail?

Example data can found below.

Pricing and Cost

For most projects, there is no fee. I am looking for experience, references, mentors and connections in the geospatial community.

If you have a large project, let’s talk about it. I might be willing to do it for free, if it’s something really interesting
or important like fighting suburban sprawl and pollution. I don’t a business or taxes set up, so I can’t really charge at this point.

How to get started?

Please send me an email describing the mapping or data project in as much detail as possible.

My email is andy@andyarthur.org

Data Avaliable

  • US Census – 2019 American Community Survey, 2020 US Census
  • NYS Tax and Assessment Rolls (2020)
  • NYSDOT Traffic Counts and Road Data
  • Historical Aerial Photography (primarily 1952, but earlier and later exist)
  • ArcGIS REST/Services and WMS Services from state and local agencies
  • LiDAR Elevation Profiles
  • USGS Topographic Maps, historic and modern – with overlays if requested
  • Data Repositories like CUGIR, DataNY.gov and NYSGIS
  • Recreation data from NYSDEC

Software Used

  • Quantum GIS (QGIS) including 3D Mapping
  • Geodata Abstraction Library (GDAL, ogr2ogr)
  • Python, including the data-science libraries PANDAS and GeoPANDAS
  • LeafletJS Web Mapping Services

Geographies Avaliable

  • Primary Capital Region and also much of New York State, also some for Pennsylvania, Vermont, West Virginia
  • State, county, municipal, school districts – Most data sets
  • Parks, highways, buffer (distance to) – Most data sets
  • Election districts – Roughly 75% of NYS counties
  • Census Tract or Blockgroup – 2019 American Community Survey
  • Tabulation Block – 2020 US Census

Are printed maps avaliable at this time?

Not currently. I can send you a file based on your specifications to print at your local print shop.

How long do mapping projects take?

Depends on complexity of the project. Many projects only take minutes, however if a project requires georeferencing, data cleaning, or custom shapes or layouts, it might take significantly longer. More revisions lead to better quality output.

Do you make maps professionally?

No! This is just a hobby. But I’m interested in expanding my skills. I do a lot of mapping for my blog and in support of community organizations like Save the Pine Bush.

Are my maps of good quality?

Thats for you to decide. I don’t have formal education in map making, and I don’t have professional tools. But do take a look at the work I’ve done below.

April 7, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Today is 7:30 PM Sunset πŸŒ‡ . Might be a nice day for reading down in the park after work. I don’t expect a long day today. Four weeks to Cinco de Mayo 🀠 . Partly sunny and 45 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. Kind of the calm after the storm, after a crazy day at work and a crazy day all together. I probably shouldn’t have cussed out that little ol’ lady at the store, who was taking too long at the counter by where the eggs are. πŸ₯š Lost my temper, but she was like looking at every egg for like 10 minutes. 😠 It was a tough day yesterday with work and everything else going on, and I think I was sleep deprived. I can be a son of a bitch when I’m tired and cranky.

There was a just a lot of miscellaneous things going on with work, πŸ’Ό and I felt like shit all morning — had some chills and aches, as it felt like I have Lyme disease coming back on again. 🐜 I can’t believe I’m getting Lyme again, but I’m hoping it’s just a temporary bug or I accidentally consumed something contaminated with mold or something. Sunday after hiking Bennett Hill I was out at my parents house, and found ticks crawling over my laptop then on my jeans. πŸ‘– Then later in the evening, I felt something crawling up my pants. Today, certainly the pollen is bad from the tree outside. I don’t know why I’ve gotten so sensitive to everything now that I’m old. It’s not like I haven’t spent that much time indoors, I’ve been exposed to plenty of mud, muck and smoke over the years. Shouldn’t be allergic to any shit these days. Some it though is the work schedule — I worked until midnight last night 😴 and then had to be up early to drop my truck off at the shop to get the oil changed at 8 AM the nigth day.

Then when I got my truck back from the oil change, I found out the shop only used regular oil and not synthetic. πŸ›’ I didn’t say anything, bit my tongue. πŸ˜‹ But I guess that’s fine, I probably should be changing the oil more often on my truck as with the leaky oil coolant line and adding oil, I’m probably building up sludge. I told them synthetic please when the order was written up, but then I got the bill back they put in regular. It’s not a big deal, I still think with modern oils I can go at least 5,000 miles which will get me through the summer. I have that airbag recall πŸ‰ for the truck that needs to be done, so maybe when I take it to the General they can do another oil change and rotate the tires. I haven’t them rotate the tires this time figuring the tires are getting old and the uneven wear. I think too much about oil on my truck, constantly measuring the dip stick, topping it off so it’s perfect, and when I changed my own oil, always using a top of the line filter and synthetic oil. πŸ”§ I should go back to doing it myself, but even I fuck it up and end up buying the wrong oil and having to go back to the store. Or be a drone, and every time I talk to anybody in the shop, remind them I want ducking synthetic oil. πŸ‘©‍πŸ”§

Then when I went down to the library to work in the afternoon, πŸ’» the internet wasn’t working well on the outside router, and I ended up hiking to the other side of the building where I had better reception. For some reason my laptop has trouble connecting to the network properly when there are other computers on the same channel. πŸ“Ά I thought it was a Linux issue but I’ve noticed the same problems in Windows, even when I’m on the VPN. That just kind of continued my fury at all in world, 😑 although I was very restrained with everybody else I ran into for the rest of the day. I probably should have just stayed home, especially with my teeth chattering, feeling sick as a dog for a while. 🀧 I doubt it’s the COVID, especially as it seems more like Lyme. Ironically, I feel better today. Everything was going wrong yesterday.

While I was up really late last night with work 😴 following another previous late night. At least with remote work πŸ’», late nights mean working with my laptop and/or my phone from bed, πŸ›Œ and no dealing with having to drive home in the dark fully exhausted. I got a call much to early this morning that I left my keys πŸ”‘ at the shop, so I’ll have to go back and pick them up today. And I’m feeling a lot better today. I think I’ll probably get to the shop around lunch time to pick up my keys, and then go to the library to work. Hopefully the internet will be better today. I mean it’s a nice day for working outdoors for sure. I left my windows open all night, and while it was cold in the early morning hours, I really like the fresh air.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 66 degrees at 4pm. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 3rd. Light north wind increasing to 5 to 9 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 65 degrees. The record high of 87 was set in 2010. 3.2 inches of snow fell back in 1896.❄

I am hoping for a much better day today. 😎 It’s sunny and warm, and despite smelling all that pollen in the air, my morning walk was quite pleasant. 🚢‍♀️ Later when I work down at the library, the sun should be nice and I’ll have plenty of solar power πŸ’» to keep my laptop fully charged. I honestly don’t mind not having Internet at home and working remotely when the weather is as nice as today expects to be. And the seat in my truck is so much more comfortable then that old paint bench I use at home. I really find working at home, I can’t spend more then a couple of hours in front of my computer working at home before my neck starts to hurt. πŸ‘€ It seems like everything is just getting old and worn out.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:58 pm with sun having an altitude of 54.3° from the due south horizon (-16.5° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 6:51 pm with the sun in the west (274°). πŸ“Έ

The sunset is in the west (280°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:28 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 57 seconds with dusk around 7:57 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:32 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies πŸŒ„ and temperatures around 61 degrees. There will be a north-northeast breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 2 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 43 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 1st. Light and variable wind. In 2020, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 42 degrees. The record low of 19 occurred back in 2018. R

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. πŸ˜• Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 69. Maximum dew point of 50 at 1pm. Sunday, a chance of showers after 8am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 64. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 53 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 56 degrees.

I kind of want to get up to the Adirondacks this weekend, but I don’t know. πŸ• I wish things weren’t so bone dry and the fire risk so high. πŸ”₯ Plus, Friday evening I have the John Wolcott interview with special guest Leon VanDyke, and I’m very excited about it and don’t want to miss the taping and the ability to participate. πŸ“Ή I still think we have more then a few weeks before the black flies dominate the Adirondacks. That said, the weekend forecast is improving, especially for Saturday, so I should plan something nice.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Cinco de Mayo 🀠 when the sun will be setting at 8:00 pm with dusk at 8:31 pm. On that day in 2020, we had sunny skies and temperatures between 59 and 38 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 66 degrees. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1944.
