I’m back and riding my bike to work ๐Ÿšฒ

Back up at five o’clock though I missed having that blast of heat from the propane heater waking up but the coffee was a lot less fiddly then the my fairly new propane stove which was not working well most of the weekend after propane gelled or dirt got into regulator. It was working good until I ran out of propane on Monday, in the cold wet snow. But it turned out to be a pretty nice day once it warmed up. Much more story to tell.

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Partly sunny and 29 degrees in Albany, NY. There is a west breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Things will start to thaw out at around 10 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Rode my bike to work today, ๐Ÿšฒ it really wasn’t a particularly cold morning but then again I’m used to the cold and I’ve been keeping my heat low in my apartment. Why heat things really warm, when I have the heated blanket, plus a hot breakfast and shower to start out the day? ๐Ÿ›€ I hate wasting energy, says the boy with the big jacked up truck. โ™จ๏ธ And I like the cold in the morning, it wakes you up when you hop out of bed. I think this was the first night in many weeks I’ve slept all night without getting up to run to the toilet. ๐Ÿšฝ It helped that yesterday I had a light breakfast, due to running out of propane in camp, โ˜• which left me with just enough heat and stove output to reheat some coffee plus a five hour energy shot and some of greek yogurt. Today’s breakfast was a bit more hardy, with eggs, spinach, onions, mushrooms. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿณ Didn’t make bread last night but will tonight, along with soaking beans for soup. ๐Ÿž ๐Ÿฒ

Today will have snow showers likely, mainly after 4pm. Otherwise, partly sunny for the balance of the day ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 35 degrees at 11am. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 26th. West wind 10 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 50 degrees. The record high of 68 was set in 1990. 6.0 inches of snow fell back in 1985.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:44 am with sun having an altitude of 26.1° from the due south horizon (-44.7° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:41 pm with the sun in the southwest (234°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (241°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:25 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 19 seconds with dusk around 4:55 pm, which is 27 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:31 pm. At sunset, look for snow ๐ŸŒจ and temperatures around 33 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be 22. โ˜ƒ๏ธ Breezy, 17 mph breeze โ›… from the west-northwest with gusts up to 32mph. Today will have 9 hours and 24 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 34 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of snow showers, mainly before 9pm. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 24 degrees at 5am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 10th. Maximum wind chill around 18 at 4am; Northwest wind 6 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 29 degrees. The record low of 3 occurred back in 1875.

Things were going so well on my trip until they weren’t. Friday was completely on schedule, having woken at 5 am and hitting the road by 7:30. ๐Ÿ›ป Got gas in Glenmont, traffic was super light on 787 and ultimately the Northway. โ›ฝ I got groceries and needed supplies at Walmart in Queensbury, which I was shocked how empty it was for Black Friday. ๐Ÿ›’ Hit the trail to Prospect Mountain from Smith Street in Lake George, by ten o’clock, at that hour wasn’t crowded.

Prospect Mountain โ›ฐ was ho hum, I don’t think it would be worth it to pay to drive the auto road in the summer or for that matter to hike it again. The views of Lake George and surrounding country were rather ordinary compared to other nearby hikes like Buck Mountain, Tongue Mountain or Cat Mountain. ๐Ÿ“ธ Granted by the time I got to the summit it was fairly cloudy โ›… and rather bitterly cold. โ„ Just gusty ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ with the mercury dropping.

I was back to my truck by two, and was setting up camp by three. โ›บ I checked out both campsites five and seven, settled on the site closer to Fox Lair as better protected from the wind and a shorter down hill driveway should we had gotten more snow then expected on Sunday night. Plus better sheltered from the wind, though less solar power. Neither site had cell service ๐Ÿ“ถ which is kind of a blessing as I needed some off the grid time without the constant social media and news cycle. ๐Ÿ”• It’s tough to turn off social media when home though I have pings always muted from Facebook. Too much temptation.

Gathered firewood ๐Ÿชต๐Ÿช“ and got the truck unpacked and heater going. All was good the campsite still had a ton of firewood from the hunters who last camped here. โ™จ Then I try to start my camp stove and it won’t start. ๐Ÿณ Damn, it’s cold out and I want a hot delicious meal ๐Ÿด. Played with the regulator on the stove for an hour, trying to clean off the ends and and warm it up to try to free the dirt and condensate in the regulator, getting the stove to work a bit but not well. Started to reheat leftovers from my freezer at home plus added onions and spinach but it wasn’t working well as the stove output was limited. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Got the fire started, let it burn down to coals, finished cooking dinner over the fire, then cooked some cranberries down with some stevia for sweetness and walnuts. ๐Ÿ’

Friday night was a cold night in the single digits. โ„ Even with the fire roaring ๐Ÿ”ฅand my propane heater on it was cold. The night was cold ๐Ÿ› in the truck, my toes were chilly by morning. Without the stove working properly, morning was kind of miserable until I got the fire going, the coffee โ˜• brewing followed by a delicious ๐Ÿ˜‹ campfire breakfast of eggs ๐Ÿฅš and all the usual fixings like onions and spinach. ๐Ÿณ Mostly hung around camp on Saturday besides a brief walk ๐Ÿšถ along Old Route 8. Saturday was also a pretty cold day for sure, mostly spent reading, listening to podcasts and hanging out over the heater. โ™จ๏ธ That’s why despite only being my six night camping, but Monday morning in the cold wet snow, I ran out of propane. It’s fine though, it helped me get an early start on Monday so I had the balance of the day to hike at Hudson River Special Area.

Sunday was a bit nicer, but still cold. โ„๏ธ Did more reading, ๐Ÿ“š hiked around Fox Lair for a while ๐ŸฆŠ , listening to podcasts ๐Ÿ“ป and just hanging around camp. The days are pretty short, it was getting up early before dawn, โ˜• enjoying my coffee — which was good as I had the stove working on Sunday so it cooked up quickly and then having oatmeal pancakes. More sun and warmer on Sunday, though by evening it started to cloud up and by 7 PM started to sleet, followed by some rain and snow, at which point I headed into my truck for the night. ๐Ÿ›Œ Cooked up onions and sweet potato on the stove, then later on finished off the cranberries with bananas and stevia. Listened to many more hours of podcasts. ๐Ÿ“ป No radio this time, as my radio is broke and normally I just use my phone for streaming. But it was good to be away from the news cycle for a few hours. ๐Ÿคซ

Monday was just cold and wet. ๐ŸŒง The sleet, snow, and rain mix just made everything wet and sloppy to start out the morning. โ˜• To make matters worse I ran out of propane while I was heating up the coffee, though I got one cup in along with a five hour energy shot and some Greek yogurt with some blueberries I added, ๐Ÿฅ„ and I was good. Drove down to Hadley, and decided to spend the balance of the day exploring the Hudson River Special Area, which had some nice views of the Hudson River ๐Ÿž along with Bear Slide Falls. As the day progressed, it warmed and sun came out. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Hiked back along River Road and Gay Pond Road. Got back to my truck around 2 PM, and headed home through Corinth and Saratoga. Got home and unpacked around 3:30, went to the laundromat in Glenmont, got groceries, and washed my truck. Headed to bed. ๐Ÿช The Glenmont laundromat isn’t as bad as the reviews suggest but more pricey then Delmar laundromat. ๐Ÿ’ฐ But it is nice that you can swing to Walmart or the car wash while your clothes are doing their thing. If I didn’t worry about the road salt eating the rest of my truck up, ๐Ÿšฟ I’d probably have just done the usual Four Corners Laundromat.

This weekend looks like it would for the first weekend of December. ๐ŸŽ„ Saturday, after the rain pushes out, partly sunny, with a high near 43. It’s good, maybe that will give me a chance to fix the relay that was malfunctioning that controls the CB radio and dash cam on my truck. It’s clicking on and off. Started doing that on the way to Glenmont, ended up stopping and slicing the feed wire until I can find the lose connection, less I burn out the relay. It’s not a big expensive relay, but still I didn’t want to have to order another one and wire it all up. ๐Ÿ“ป Sunday, a chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 41. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Doesn’t seem like a wash out, most of the rain will be on Saturday. Typical average high for the weekend is 43 degrees.

The next trip is not until the days leading up to Christmas ๐ŸŽ„ where I am thinking of going out to Madison County but it depends on how much snow there is. ๐Ÿด Probably camp at the Brookfield Horse Camp, and then hike the trails or ride some of the dirt roads. Spend sometime down in Sherburne, and maybe other places. Then come back home on Christmas Day. A lot though depends on the weather. โ„๏ธ But that’s the next trip, which is like three and half weeks away. I need a few weekends home for now, though I have a number of family and other things to do in the meantime.

Looking ahead at bar specials, next Tuesday is Repeal of Prohibition Day ๐Ÿบ when the sun will be setting at 4:23 pm with dusk at 4:53 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 44 and 26 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 42 degrees. We hit a record high of 65 back in 2001.

Hillside

Riding downtown early on this TGIF ๐Ÿšฒ

I was on the fence about riding in today but I figured it would save a buck thirty and I figured even if the weather is crap for the evening I’m not going to be riding home as it’s dark out.

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Partly cloudy and 46 degrees at the Empire State Plaza. โ›… There is a south breeze at 13 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Monday around noontime. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

That wind is really whipping around on the Plaza ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ but the actual ride in was quite pleasant. I’d like to get in 10,000 steps for the day ๐Ÿ‘ฃ but that might be hard as I have a one o’clock meeting ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ผ and I’m not sure if it will be nice enough to walk in the evening. Plus it’s a Friday and I’m tired but the 7 ยพ mile bike ride from Delmar to the office downtown ๐Ÿข and the eighteen flights of stairs to my office has to count for something.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 63 degrees at 1pm. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 13th. Maximum dew point of 50 at 4pm. South wind 13 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 44 degrees. The record high of 73 was set in 1928. 2.8 inches of snow fell back in 1992.โ„

That’s a pretty impressive forecast to start the day out, and it was worth it to ride in. ๐Ÿšฒ I was a bit hesitant as the weather is going to be cool and windy ๐ŸŒฌ come the evening as the front pushes through that will bring rain for SZ opening day ๐ŸฆŒ and I’m planning on bringing my laptop home, ๐Ÿ’ป and hauling the day pack with the laptop carrying case plus loading my bike on the bus ๐ŸšŒ can be a bit of a armful but I’ve done it before. Bike will ride good on the bus even if it’s windy I’m sure, as there is plenty of wind pushing on the bike every other day I ride the bus with my bike on the expressway.

Yesterday I got sweet onions ๐Ÿง… and that was the first thing I chopped up this morning and fried up with spinach, mushrooms ๐Ÿ„ tomatoes ๐Ÿ… and eggs ๐Ÿฅš. You know a good fiber and protein rich breakfast. ๐Ÿณ When I make up eggs, it’s rarely more than the eggs are glue to be used with all those delicious ๐Ÿ˜‹ vegetables.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:41 am with sun having an altitude of 28.4ยฐ from the due south horizon (-42.4ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:50 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (237ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (245ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:32 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 13 seconds with dusk around 5:01 pm, which is 52 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the south-southwest (198ยฐ) at an altitude of 18ยฐ from the horizon, 229,292 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:37 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 61 degrees. The dew point will be 50 degrees. Breezy, 18 mph breeze โ›… from the south with gusts up to 30mph. Should be a pretty mild evening. But windy. Today will have 9 hours and 45 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 6 seconds over yesterday.

Maybe I will be able to do an evening walk ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ after all. I will see on how cold and windy it is out this afternoon. I might also walk down to the library, and play with remote sensing data down at the library. But first more of that pea soup ๐Ÿฒ and homemade bread that I made up yesterday and proved to be a good dinner. Plus maybe I’ll fry up more apples ๐ŸŽ and bananas with that avocado oil ๐Ÿฅ‘ which is great because I can use a ton of heat to cook and brown things without reaching the smoke point.

Tonight will have showers, mainly before 5am. ๐ŸŒง Low of 46 degrees at 6am. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 8th. South wind 8 to 16 mph becoming north after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 28 degrees. The record low of 10 occurred back in 1972.

Continuing that Udemy Course on Remote Sensing using the Semi Automatic Classification plugin ๐Ÿ—บ. I’m not totally sure what I’m going to use my new found skills for but it’s something I’ve been interested in a while. ๐Ÿ–ฅ Raster math is kind of fun and interesting, especially when you use R to do it. Indeed while I may learn with QGIS I’d probably end up using R just because it’s faster to write code then click on all those dialogs.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers, mainly before 7am. Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 49 degrees at 12pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 16th. North wind 10 to 13 mph. Chilly with that wind though. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 43 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1928. 9.0 inches of snow fell back in 1980.โ„

Doesn’t look like a real great Saturday, โ›ท but I might go to the Bethlehem Sports Mart that the Boy Scouts host at the High School and look at Cross Country Skis. Then maybe ride out to Voorheesville, just to check out the new Slingerlands temporary rail trail bridge, ๐ŸŒ‰ and maybe get apples ๐Ÿ at Indian Ladder and other things at Hannaford Voorheesville. I’ll still probably get up at 5 o’clock to bake bread ๐Ÿฅ–๐Ÿž and Butternut Squash. ๐Ÿ†

Looking ahead to Sunday, a slight chance of showers before 1pm. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Partly sunny, with a high near 47. Southwest wind 8 to 15 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Another cool day with the wind, but being SZ season, I’ll probably not wander too far out in the woods. ๐ŸฆŒ But maybe ride out to Five Rivers. And also run to the grocery store for the big weekly shop ๐Ÿ›’ . Chance of precipitation is 20%. Typical average high for the weekend is 48 degrees.

Looking ahead, next Friday is Buy Nothing Day ๐Ÿ›๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:27 pm with dusk at 4:56 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 49 and 24 degrees. I know you will miss all the sales but that plastic shit kind of stinks when you burn it. Typically, the high temperature is 46 degrees. We hit a record high of 70 back in 2014.

I’m still hoping to get out of town next Friday into next week โ›บ ๐Ÿšต but I’m watching the forecast and it seems like the Adirondacks might be getting it’s first good snow come the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. ๐ŸŒจ It’s not to say I can’t hot tent though, as long as the snow banks aren’t too deep along NY 8. Maybe the bigger issue is that next weekend might be cold โ„ quite cold up north. It’s not the mercury I’m concerned about but if it’s windy out or not. That wind chill can really get to you.

An Extended Government Shutdown Could Impact My Vacation Plans ๐Ÿ•

Most versions of my plans for my October Road – Camping trip involve at least some “dispersed camping” in National Forests and visiting National Forest sites. While I am not planning leaving until October 14th, I know spiteful a Democratic president can be over the temporary lapse of appropriations, forcing closures of many developed recreation sites, including in some cases gating back-country roads, not because they cost the government much money, but to put political pressure on Republicans to adopt a budget they don’t agree with.

Not sure if this is going to be an issue this year, but I could see both sides dragging out their appropriation fight well into October and it might require me to reconsider my plans. One option would be to visit more state forests in the Southern Tier of New York State along with doing the Pennsylvania Pine Creek Rail Trail, another would be to head north, and do a trip to the Tug Hill Plateau and North Country / Massena.

I did camp in back country in the Finger Lakes National Forest during the shutdown in 2013, but it’s not clear if that was explicitly permitted or prohibited. The recreation sites were gated at the National Forest, but it’s rather hard to close off back-country roads that aren’t maintained by the forest service. State parks remained fully open, and while during the week I saw a Schuyler County Deputy and the NYSDEC Officer patrolling the roads to make up for the lack of working forest service rangers, they never stopped or said anything about camping during the government shutdown.

It’s not certain what will happen this year, but I should consider my alternatives.

Entering Forest

That moon to rising at nine o’clock essentially over South Hill in Ithaca last night was amazing. ๐ŸŒ•

Maybe we are day past the official full moon but turning onto Potomac Road from Searsburg Road, the moon rise was most impressive and so large looming over the pasture lands. Not sure if it’s a super moon but it certainly was super from the angle I was viewing it high from the Hector Backbone looking down towards Cayuga Lake.

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. Mostly sunny and 62 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. There is a south breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 53 degrees. Cool start to the morning, I got chilled through wearing shorts and t-shirt, had to get my hoodie on to warm up. The cold is delaying my start this morning but I want to leave fairly soon as today is the calmest forecasted day of the week and I want to go paddling ๐Ÿ›ถ and swimming ๐ŸŠ on Seneca Lake before the wind picks up later.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 76 degrees at 4pm. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 11th. Maximum dew point of 53 at 9am. South wind 3 to 5 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 89 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1975.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:14 pm with sun having an altitude of 65.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-5.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:48 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (289ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (295ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:28 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 12 seconds with dusk around 8:58 pm, which is one minute and 10 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:39 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 69 degrees. The dew point will be 54 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 29 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 12 seconds over yesterday.

Long day yesterday, I didn’t get back to camp โ›บ until nearly 9:15 pm as I was in Geneva until after 8 pm and stopped in search of clams, Greek yogurt and milk at Tops in Waterloo. ๐Ÿช But still the sunset is pretty late in the Finger Lakes but by the time I was past Ovid heading into Lodi it was definitely approaching dusk. ๐ŸŒ† That said the open landscape helped a lot keeping things from being too dark as I drove back to camp. But regardless I was tired ๐Ÿ˜ด. I was so fortunate to see last night’s moon rise.

Rode from Seneca Lake to Kueka Lake yesterday via the Kueka Outlet Trail. ๐Ÿšฒ Touched both lakes with the wheel of my bicycle. It’s a lot quicker of a ride then when I walked it. Poked around Dresden and Penn Yan for a while ๐Ÿซ I was very impressed with the Downtown on Penn Yann, it was largely untouched by urban renewal ๐Ÿ—๏ธ and still had many vibrant small businesses and shops. ๐Ÿฌ

I ended up driving ๐Ÿš˜ back to Penn Yan after getting Frozen Custard ๐Ÿฆat the Spotted Duck ๐Ÿฆ† because I decided I had to visit the Penn Yan old fashioned bulk candy shop. I was going to get fudge but ended up getting black chocolate ๐Ÿซ peanut ๐Ÿฅœ brittle that I’m saving for a future day. That place is a throwback not many places like that anymore, especially on Main Street. Reminded me of the old Blue Churn in South Westerlo I used to go to as a kid before it burned down. Spotted duck blueberry Blue Fluer custard was good, the Carmelt caramel custard was amazing. ๐Ÿฆ Maybe it’s vacation FOMO but who knows when I’ll ever get back to Penn Yan again.

The ice cream was wonderful ๐Ÿฆ and the two scoups – duck egg ๐Ÿฅš sized each, wasn’t too much but the sugar fueled a full out anxiety attack in my mind and kept me roaring with crazy ๐Ÿคช energy well into the evening though by 11 pm enough sugar burned off I was okay. Truth is I’ve been having a wonderful vacation โ˜บ but every time I consume any quantity of non natural sugar I get so sick ๐Ÿคฎ. But I’ll probably get a small ice cream at Glen Dairy Bar again tonight and remember the crazy thoughts in my head are just that. But not a mega large dish ๐Ÿจlike on Sunday. Go for the quality not the portion. I don’t know if it’s my fear ๐Ÿ˜ฑ of the calories and getting fat, knowing how bad sugar is for you, or something else but my mental health is so much better the farther I stay away from added sugar. I’m fine eating delicious fruit all day long ๐Ÿ‡ ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ‘ but give me ice cream and a few minutes later I’m super wound up.

With all that energy, I drove up to Seneca Lake State Park in Geneva, ๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ hoping to get a swim in the lake and a shower ๐Ÿšฟ the later I did but I had forgotten they a few years back had replaced the life guarded beach ๐Ÿ– with a kids splash pad due to the pollution on the lake from blue green algea. Hell of it is, this part of state has been cool and relatively dry so not a lot of water pollution this year compared to many years. But I also wangtted to do the Cayuga – Seneca Bike Path ๐Ÿšฒ from Geneva to Waterloo, as much to say I did it. And to use time up. ๐ŸŒฝ Not a lot of exciting view along it, some view of both the Old Erie Canal and the modern barge canal, lot of marshland, corn and soybean fields. Poked around Waterloo for a while ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ and visited the Civil War monument. ๐Ÿฆณ Ended up going to Tops in Waterloo on Mound Road, you know the one next to Seneca Meadows landfill and getting milk, plain non fat yogurt not Greek as they’re out, and a small two servings bag of salmon. Made it back to camp by nine o’clock, wasn’t super dark out at that point and had a fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ until eleven.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 60 degrees at 6am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 20th. Maximum dew point of 54 at 8pm. South wind 7 to 14 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 64 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1976.

Cool this weekend with temperatures running 9 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Then again it’s always cooler in the Finger Lakes compared to Albany records. Good for bike riding, maybe not so great for swimming ๐ŸŠ. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 73. Maximum dew point of 59 at 8am. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 75. Maximum dew point of 59 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 7:46 pm with dusk at 8:14 pm. On that day in 2022, we had rain and temperatures between 90 and 66 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 80 degrees. We hit a record high of 98 back in 1953.

Mooreville Range

Shift it down into overdrive โš™

It’s now just coasting to the weekend, or so I tell myself. The hill has been climbed, now it’s just coasting to five o’clock. And next weekend is Memorial Day Weekend, which the black flies want you to know is a three day weekend.

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Mostly sunny and 48 degrees โ˜€ in Delmar for the morning walk. There is a south breeze at 11 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

I hear that summer is coming ๐Ÿ– though lately there has been very little evidence of that lately. That said, things may get warmer for the Memorial Day Weekend though not by much. When summer finally arrives though I’m betting it will get hot.

I was thinking ๐Ÿ’ญ about eggs this morning ๐Ÿฅš as I had too many carbs yesterday but I think with time limitations ๐Ÿฅฃ and because I want eggs tomorrow I’m going to reheat the remaining barley and quinoa I have cooked in the refrigerator and serve with blackberries and cherries ๐Ÿ’ this morning. ๐Ÿฅฃ May add a little honey ๐Ÿฏ just because otherwise the quiona is too bitter. Then some carrots ๐Ÿฅ•. Tomorrow eggs ๐Ÿณ I’m thinking. I’ll make sure to limit carbs at lunch and dinner. Maybe I’ll crack open that other can of mackerel ๐Ÿ  or tuna with dinner and serve with kale to boost my omega 3 levels and vitamin absorption. Also need to use up more of the peppers ๐Ÿซ‘๐ŸŒถ๏ธ in the refrigerator they’re getting dried out a bit. I do make frozen spinach and especially kale ๐Ÿฅ— too big of a portion of my diet but it’s easy and cheap source of healthy fiber though I do need to mix it up more. Overdoing kale is better than overdosing on sugars and fats I tell myself.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 72 degrees at 4pm. Typical for today. Maximum dew point of 48 at 12pm. South wind 11 to 17 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1989. There was a dusting of snow in 1976.โ„

Yesterday was busy and I was tired ๐Ÿ˜ด by the end of the day but I still got 9.2 miles in by the end of the day. Caught the express bus ๐Ÿš both ways, made up and eat too much brown rice ๐Ÿš and red lentils, as its super dense but tried to make up for it by having lots of kale, tomato ๐Ÿ… and onions with the small slice of chicken ๐Ÿ” breast I had for dinner. I’ll cut back further on the carbs today. It’s about averages.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 67.1ยฐ from the due south horizon (-3.7ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:34 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (292ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (298ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:15 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 17 seconds with dusk around 8:47 pm, which is one minute and one second later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡

The best time to look at the stars is after 9:29 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 65 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 14 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 48 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 57 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 51 degrees at 2am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 24th. Maximum dew point of 50 at 6am. South wind 11 to 14 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 46 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 2002.

I would like to walk ๐Ÿšถ ten miles today but it’s going to be difficult as I have to probably do work this evening and pick up the Save the Pine Bush display from Lynne Jackson in the city after work. ๐Ÿ—’ Those committee agendas keep coming later and later into the weekend. ๐Ÿคฏ It’s fine, I need the comp time for summer but still it will lead to a very busy evening.

Tomorrow will have showers likely, mainly after 3pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 66 degrees at 12pm. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 1st. Maximum dew point of 57 at 2pm. South wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Not the nicest day possible for the Lupine Festival ๐Ÿฆ‹ but not a total washout. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 79 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1962.

Looking ahead to Sunday, mostly sunny, โ˜€ with a high near 73. Northwest wind around 11 mph. Maximum dew point of 50 at 8am. Typical average high for the weekend is 73 degrees. That should be a nicer day. Looking at minimum at Bennett Hill before seeing the folks, might also do an early morning hike to Five Rivers ๐Ÿฆ – and I mean early like 5 AM – and maybe an evening hike up Blodgett Hill then get groceries for the week at Wally World.๐Ÿ›’

I wasn’t going to head out of town for the holiday weekend โ›บ but with the warming trend and potentially sunny hot weather, I could be persuaded elsewise. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ Hammock Camping is more likely but I could consider the Spectulator area especially if I have to spend part of the week remote working. ๐Ÿ’ป That said I don’t like the black flies and summer isn’t that far away. I’d still almost prefer though to wait for the following week when work is less and the woods is quieter. ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒBut sometimes plans change.

I’m back to thinking ๐Ÿ’ญ about the Finger Lakes National Forest for summer vacation ๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ mostly because I’m thinking of all the trails and flat land up on the hump between the lakes for bicycle ๐Ÿšฒ riding. Plus lots of opportunities to fish ๐ŸŽฃ and the ease of setting up camp โ›บ for the week and nearby groceries at Watkins Glen. ๐Ÿ It was fun paddling Seneca Lake on calmer days. ๐Ÿ›ถ And doing the Black River Valley to camp and hunt come the autumn rather than West Virginia.

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now the Average High is 80 when the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm with dusk at 9:11 pm. Basically almost summer at that point, I should spend it at the House Pond campsite. โ›บ

Cloudy Skies Over Cedar River Flow

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. ๐Ÿคฏ

I’ve been doing this long enough that I know when give it a little gas and ease off the clutch I’ll be moving forward and before long be pulling that lever back into second and it will be Friday before you know it. That said I’m primarily thinking about Juneteenth weekend spent at the House Pond campsite swimming hole.

Sunny and 42 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž Calm wind. I don’t know it feels cold but I’m always cold these days now that I’ve lost some body fat with the lower R value. But it’s also good because fat in the body organs like your heart ♥ muscle ๐Ÿ’ช is so bad. It can’t be that cold intolerant though as Saturday night slept in hammock with just a little blanket.

Regardless of what I might think of the weekend that was, it was a productive one ๐Ÿ”ง. The tire is back on the truck, my pantry stocked, walked twelve miles yesterday including five miles on Cole Hill State Forest and seven miles out to Bender Mellon Preserve. Got the work that needed to be done ๐Ÿ’ป from home. Hammock camped.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 73 degrees at 4pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 20th. Light southwest wind becoming west 8 to 13 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, which became partly cloudy by afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 82 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1900.

I made the best tasting whole wheat pasta salad ๐Ÿฅ— yesterday with the kale and mackerel. Much more filling then traditional pasta salad with the empty carbohydrates and fat of white pasta and mayonnaise. Mackerel is high in omega 3 fats that more than enough replaces the need for mayonnaise and helps with the absorption of fat soluble vitamins and minerals, including those in the fiber and vitamin rich kale. I know eating kale is a yuppie thing but it’s remarkably nutritious and tasty. Plus I can mock Keto math that subtracts fiber from carbs but it’s impossible to question the benefits of fiber.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 66.2° from the due south horizon (-4.6° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:30 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (290°). ๐Ÿ“ธ

Not sure how late I’ll be stuck in the office ๐Ÿข this week, but it should be a good week weather wise. โ˜€ Cool on Wednesday. Tomorrow I need to pick up my suit jackets at the dry cleaning before work, dry cleaning has gotten expensive these days. ๐Ÿ•ด๏ธ Leave my truck at the Delaware park and ride. Maybe after work stop at Hannaford and pick up a few missing groceries – so far no fat vanilla yogurt is the only thing on that list ๐Ÿ“ƒ and that is more of a luxury then a necessity. I like a few times a week to drizzle yogurt on frozen fruit as a sugary treat after the evening walk, especially on hot days. ๐Ÿšถ But I know the added sugar of the vanilla yogurt is rather bad even if I use it sparingly and a container typically last me a month before it’s used up and put in the garbage to be burnt. Lol.

The sunset is in the west-northwest (297°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:11 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 14 seconds with dusk around 8:42 pm, which is one minute and 3 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:24 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 65 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 40 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 5 seconds over yesterday.

I am hoping to get home early enough, that I have time to walk down at the park. ๐Ÿƒ It gets difficult this time of year, but maybe I’ll get some steps in at lunch time. I would like to have in at least 9 miles by the end of the day. Need to get to the bank ๐Ÿฆ so I can have cash to pick up my suit jackets tomorrow. ๐Ÿ•ด๏ธ

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ , with a low of 50 degrees at 6am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 20th. West wind 7 to 10 mph becoming southwest after midnight. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies. It was humid. It got down to 57 degrees. The record low of 33 occurred back in 1980.

Showers this weekend โ˜”. But not a washout. Payback for the last two really nice weekends. Saturday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 72. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 48 at 8pm. Might not be perfect ๐Ÿ‘Œ for the Lupine Festival ๐Ÿฆ‹ but okay. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 71. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 52 at 8pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 73 degrees.

Looking ahead, there are 3 weeks until 8:30 PM Sunset ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 8:30 pm with dusk at 9:03 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 77 and 47 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1925.
