October 9, 2017 Morning

Good morning! Happy Indigenous Peoples Day. Or as powerful people in our state like to say, hertiage not hate. So Happy Columbus Day to them. I have no problem with celebrating multiple holidays on one day — heck we just had the Hunter and Harvest Moon on the same day — chopping silage and hunting are important, because both milk and vension are delicious.

It looks like the rain has stopped for now but it might come back. The Trump doesn’t like nice weather on the weekends. Cloudy, damp, humid and 65 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. The dew point is 64 degrees. Less rain as the day progresses, with the skies clearing tonight around 2 am.

The alarm on my smartphone wasn’t that smart and sounded for Indigenous Peoples aka Columbus Day, so I am wide awake plenty early and have had breakfast. I don’t have a lot planned for today, but I will continue to work on some maps. Kind of damp and humid for going out hiking, but the leaves are starting to turn nicely in Albany. I hear that the library is open today, so I should think about going down there later on, so I can upload the maps. Except for my smartphone, I dont have internet at home. Nor do I ever plan to have it. I am pretty sure cable is some kind of addictive scam. That said, with my bluetooth keyboard and mouse, I got to be careful how much data I use on my phone. I might also run over to Valatie to visit my mom and I might also go out and see my dad later on and cook him dinner. I’ll have to see what the weather is like as the day progresses.

I am kind of glad I’m not out camping today, because it’s a rather damp morning, athough last night was pretty nice. Certainly have woken to many rainy mornings in the wilderness, sitting next to a smokey campfire, drinking coffee out of a styrofoam cup. I highly doubt that any of those cups ended up in a landfill. Maybe I should have gone up to Adirondacks yesterday, but you never know when you would have gotten caught in a thunderstorm. Bennett Hill was a nice hike, although I wish I could have gone somewheres with more color. That said, with the warm dry weather, autumn has been retarded in West Viriginia, so there is little color there yet per the Applachian group I am a member of on the Facebook. That said, when peak color comes there, it won’t last for long.

For the rest of Indigenous People aka Columbus Day we will continue to have some rain showers at time, tapering off as the day progresses. That said, hopefully you don’t have engine vacuum operated windshield wipers, as the rain could be heavy at times. High of 74 degrees at 4pm. 11 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 69 at 12pm. South wind 5 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly cloudy skies. The high last year was 60 degrees. We had some rather sucky days last year when I was working up in the North Syracuse. The record high of 83 was set in 1949. There was a dusting of snow in 2000.

The sun will set at 6:21 pm with dusk around 6:50 pm, which is one minute and 41 seconds earlier than yesterday. At sunset, look for cloudy conditions and 72 degrees. No sunset for you today. The dew point will be 67 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 11 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 19 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly before 9pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low of 60 degrees at 6am. 19 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 6pm. Southwest wind 7 to 9 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2016, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 39 degrees. The record low of 25 occurred back in 1980.

Looking ahead, there are 11 weeks until Christmas when the sun will be setting at 4:27 pm with dusk at 4:59 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2016, we had drizzle then mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 43 and 21 degrees. It was fun camping on Irish Hill last year in the heated tent next to roaring campfire. That was a fun way to spend Christmas. I like holiday camping. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 66 back in 1889.
