March 5, 2017 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Next Sunday Starts Daylight Savings Time. Sunny and 16 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 14 mph. The current wind chill is 2. Much too cold. But warming up next week. And with the slackening wind and bright sunshine, shouldn’t feel so cold today.

Today will be sunny, with a high of 31 degrees at 3pm. Nine degrees below normal. Northwest wind 8 to 14 mph. A year ago, we had mostly cloudy skies and a high of 35 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1964. 8.6 inches of snow fell back in 1917.

Cold in the apartment this morning. Gas heat didn’t keep up with the wind and dropping mercury last night. I did put on the electric heat which is helping now. Reheated the rather awful tasting quiche I made yesterday and it came out better reheated then before. I got to learn or at least spend more time becoming a good cook. I think all of the those vegetables and chopped up meat balls and ham didn’t quite work together for my tastes. Made up some more maps and I am soon going to head over to the shower.

Doing a little more cleaning and once things further warm up I will go to the store and car wash. Then probably go hiking at Hannacroix Preserve then out to mom and dad’s house for Sunday dinner. I also have another map project to do today but have get some more data from the library to do it. Also need to download more data so I can make more charts for next week.

The sun will set at 5:50 pm with dusk around 6:19 pm, which is one minute and 12 seconds later than yesterday. I was noticing last night that it wasn’t pitch black until after 6:30. Just wait until next Sunday with the time change. Today will have 11 hours and 28 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low of 8 degrees at 2am. 14 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around 19 at 6pm; Calm wind. In 2016, it got down to 24 degrees under partly clear skies. The record low of -21 occurred back in 1948.

Today in 1970, Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty goes into effect after ratification by 43 nations. Now if we could get the world to destroy the existing stock. I doubt that will happen nor will we ban toxic plastics, nuclear power or take serious action on climate change. In 1933, during the height of the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declares a “bank holiday”, closing all U.S. banks and freezing all financial transactions. He would be declared a socialist by the Republicans nowadays.

As previously noted, next Sunday is Daylight Savings Time when the sun will be setting at 6:59 pm with dusk at 7:27 pm (Daylight Savings Time). That will be nice if we have warm, sunny weather and I can go the park after work. On that day in 2016, we had partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 62 and 25 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 43 degrees. We hit a record high of 69 back in 2012. Spring 2012 was super warm and early. I remember climbing a snow free Storm King Mountain that year.
