March 11, 2017 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 12 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 15 mph. The current wind chill is -4. I hope you are staying warm.

I didn’t do much today besides go down to the library, do some reading, watch a movie on Donald Trump and make some maps up. So cold today that even the walk down to the library was frigid. I hate January weather in March. That said the foot plus of snow we may get on Tuesday will hopefully last until next weekend so I can get some cross country skiing in one last time this year I hope.

I am reading Harry Truman’s Excellent Adventures, the true story of a Great American Road Trip. What a great story of a great road trip, a bad driver and some presidential history to boot. Few presidents have ever been so humble, so frugal and so colorful at the same time. This has to be one of the best books I’ve read in a long time.

Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low of 5 degrees at 6am. 19 degrees below normal. Darn cold but by no means record breaking cold.  Maximum wind chill around -5 at 12am; Northwest wind 9 to 15 mph. In 2016, it got down to 25 degrees under partly cloudy skies. The record low of -12 occurred back in 1948.

Waxing Gibbous Moon tonight with 98% illuminated. The moon will set around 8:26 am. The Full β€œWorm” Moon will be tomorrow with partly cloudy skies expected. The sun will rise at 7:12 am with the first light at 6:44 am, which is one hour, one minute and 43 seconds earlier than yesterday. Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead one hour before bed.  Tonight will have 12 hours and 12 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over last night. Thursday it’s exactly twelve hours.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny, with a high of 25 degrees at 3pm. 18 degrees below normal. Northwest wind 9 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies and a high of 62 degrees. The record high of 69 was set in 2012. 30.4 inches of snow fell back in 1888.

Probably too cold to go out hiking but I’ll fire up Big Red for the first time time in a week, go to the grocery store then out to my parents house for Sunday dinner. I expect a very quiet Sunday and it will probably go by quickly with the time change.

In four weeks on April 8 the sun will be setting at 7:30 pm, which is one hour, 32 minutes and 11 seconds later then tonight. In 2016 on that day, we had rain, snow and temperatures between 47 and 31 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 55 and 35 degrees. The record high of 88 degrees was set back in 1929.

Looking ahead, April Fools Day is in 3 weeks and Earth Day is in 6 weeks.

Good night. I’m off to sleep to ensure ample sleep with the time change.  Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead tonight.
