Windham High Point

On Sunday afternoon I went for a hike up Windham High Peak. It took about two hours to go up, and then I spent about an hour up top, taking photos and jotting down some notes. I took the blue trail up from Route 23 parking lot, past the lean to and to the peak.

Melt Water

It was an amazingly warm day for the end of winter. There was not much ice on the mountain, due to the southerly route of the trail. Once you reach the top, the views aren’t all that spectacular, in part because you are up so high, and the Heldebergs below are so far below you, almost 2,250 feet lower.

Blue Trail

In retrospect, I think I preferred going from Big Hollow Road, which I had hiked up Windham High Peak in the past. There is far less elevation going up that way then climbing up from Route 23. Regardless, it was an enjoyable hike.

Be sure to see my Windham High Peak photos.

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Four weeks to Average High is 60 🍂. Partly sunny and 56 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 54 degrees. Seems like a nice morning. I’m making up some french toast 🧇 and coffee ☕ now and going to soon take a shower 🚿.

I think the plan for today is to hike Windham High Peak 🗻 and go out to my parents house 🍲 for Sunday dinner. 🚶 I haven’t done Windham High Peak in a number of years and I have think it will be a nice hike, even if last time I was up there I was under impressed by the views. 📷

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 75 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 10th. Maximum dew point of 57 at 11am. West wind 3 to 7 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with sunny skies in the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 85 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1915.

The sun will set at 7:06 pm with dusk around 7:34 pm, which is one minute and 47 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies 🌃 and temperatures around 69 degrees. The dew point will be 55 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 30 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers after 1am. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 57 degrees at 5am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 2nd. Maximum dew point of 56 at 10pm. Northwest wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was sticky. It got down to 63 degrees. The record low of 32 occurred back in 1964.

The display in my bedroom is still getting stuck and malfunctioning a lot. 📟 I think I’ve found the bad solder joint and the board, I will have to hit it again with the soldering iron. 🔬

Next weekend keeps looking increasingly hot and sunny. 😎 I think it might be good for one more weekend at the potholers after I do the Pine Bush Bird Hike 🐦 early on Saturday morning.

Been thinking 💭 about hiking back to Pharoah Lake in late October or early November. 🚶 I made up a revised map 🗾 yesterday and was thinking it would be a nice day hike. The hike back there is an easy 3 1/2 miles each way over virtually flat terrain (you gain only 200 ft in elevation from Beaver Brook Road) but the 420 acre lake 🐠 is 5 miles around it so it’s a good distance. Do it in November and all your bound to see is a few deer hunters, 🦌 the crowds 👪 will be long gone.

I haven’t talked or given a whole lot of thought towards saving for my off grid house 🏡 lately. The automatic investments are doing their thing and I’m getting closer one step at a time. Yeah, a lot of people I went to school with or know are buying houses out in the country 🐮 but I just can’t see doing that while I still live in New York. I’m fine spending a lot of weekends for now in the wilderness, camping, cooking and having fires. 🔥

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Average High is 60 🍂 when the sun will be setting at 6:17 pm with dusk at 6:45 pm. On that day in 2018, we had rain showers, partly cloudy and temperatures between 55 and 41 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 61 degrees. We hit a record high of 81 back in 1930.

Good evening! Partly clear and 63 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌃 There is a south breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 61 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 3 am.

Spent some time working on some new maps for the blog. 📝 And fixing and improving some code maybe also watching a YouTube video in the background that I previously downloaded. 💻 I’ve been trying to stay off of the internet more lately, although I did go down to the library for a bit. Also I got to dig through some more government data as I’d like to make more graphs 📊 for the blog in the coming weeks. Wanted to clean the bathroom 🚿 but that didn’t happen nor did I spend much time studying the map of West Virginia in preparation for my vacation in less than three weeks now.

I was going to go out for my evening walk 🚶 but it gets dark early and I’m not that big of a fan of walking after dark these days. I worry a bit about stepping funny in the dark streets especially out back of the high school and injuring my ankle. That would really ruin my trip. Shopping didn’t happen either but I didn’t really need anything right away – I might be able to hold off until Thursday then buy groceries for the weekend before I head up north.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers before 1am. Patchy fog after 11pm. Otherwise, mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 56 degrees at 6am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 5th. Maximum dew point of 61 at 10pm. South wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was sticky. It got down to 66 degrees. The record low of 33 occurred back in 1975.

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon 🌖 with 96% illuminated. The moon will set at 7:43 am. The Last Quarter Moon is on Friday night with partly cloudy skies. The Hunter Moon 🌝 is in 4 weeks. The sun will rise at 6:34 am with the first light at 6:05 am, which is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 11 hours and 27 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 75 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 10th. Maximum dew point of 57 at 11am. West wind 3 to 7 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 85 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1915.

Sounds like a nice day. ☺ I’m still thinking about hiking Windham High Peak tomorrow 🗻 but it depends on how early a start I get. Otherwise I’ll just do Bennett Hill on my way out to my parents house. I like to do at least one mountain now to get the blood pumping each week in preparation for day hikes at Dolly Sods. 🚶

In four weeks on October 12 the sun will be setting at 6:18 pm,🌄 which is 49 minutes and 2 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 61 and 45 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 61 and 41 degrees. The record high of 85 degrees was set back in 1954.

When I was over at my sisters house she has all those big TV 📺 and computers. It’s just not my thing. I do have a fairly big computer monitor but I don’t mind not having internet at home. It makes it easier to code and work without distraction. I have zero interest in all that commercial stuff. Its nice just having that away from home. Saves a lot of money too.

Looking ahead, Average High 70 🎑 is in 1 weeks, Columbus Day 🛥️ is a month away, Northern Zone Regular Season 🦌 is in 5 weeks, Small Business Saturday 🛍️ is in 11 weeks, First Day of Winter ☃️ is in 14 weeks, 4:30 PM Sunset 🌆 is in 15 weeks, Coldest Week of the Year 🌬 is in 4 months, Winnie the Pooh Day 🍯 is in 18 weeks and 5 PM Sunset 🌆 is in 19 weeks.

Good morning! Happy Friday the 13th 👿! I decided to wear my black shirt to celebrate 🎉, mainly because that’s the one I had ready to go this morning.👕 It really wans’t that intentional at all, I kind of like the black shirt, especially on the cooler days. It’s the whole Garth Brooks look, for when you want a good ride cowboy. 🤠 Sunny and 53 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. Calm wind. The dew point is 47 degrees. 😎 Nice fall morning. 🍂

So far everything this morning is going smoothly. 🚍 I caught the express bus downtown on this most sunny of mornings. Having increased problems with waking my phone up 📱, I’ve had the same phone for about two years now and I think the button on the back wearing out. Eventually I’ll probably have to replace it. I thought about actually painting the case as it’s gotten pretty worn down color wise and is more white than black these days.🖌️

That said, except for my evening walk, I’ll probably stay home this evening, 🚶 lest I fall and break my ankle or get hit by a truck or something less then fun.🙇 I have some Youtube I’ve downloaded that I want to watch 📽 and maybe I’ll make up some more maps. You know, gotta catch up with the latest updates of people chopping silage, and working on their trucks. 🐮 Lately, I’ve been doing my evening walk earlier, 🏃as I find it’s awful dark walking at 9 PM at night, and I kind of like seeing the landscape, especially walking past Sunset Farm and Heldebergs on evenings doing my walk. That said, even at 6:45 PM, it’s already starting to get dark most nights.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 72 degrees at 3pm. One degree below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 16th. Maximum dew point of 47 at 8am. Light and variable wind becoming south 6 to 11 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was humid. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1948.

The sun will set at 7:09 pm with dusk around 7:37 pm, which is one minute and 46 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for mostly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 64 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 36 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have increasing clouds ☁, with a low of 55 degrees at 12am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 8th. Maximum dew point of 51 at 5am. South wind 9 to 14 mph. In 2018, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was humid. It got down to 65 degrees. The record low of 32 occurred back in 1963.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 72 degrees at 5pm. One degree below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 16th. Maximum dew point of 62 at 4pm. South wind 13 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was humid. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1931.

Looking ahead to Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 75. West wind 5 to 8 mph. 🌞Maximum dew point of 58 at 7am. Typical average high for the weekend is 73 degrees. I am thinking this would be a nice day for a hike again in the Catskills. Not sure where, I would like to hike somewhere not too far from home. Maybe Windham High Peak? Been a few years since I’ve climbed that.

One month 📅 from now the Average High is 60 🍂 when the sun will be setting at 6:17 pm with dusk at 6:45 pm. Autumn will be well underway, and it will be my October vacation. I am hoping the leaves will be good then in West Virginia, going the week earlier, as they are often gone in the higher elevations by Columbus Day Weekend. I still got to take off that week, I think I will request it today.

Burnt Knob and Acra Point

The previous Sunday I hiked up Windham High Peak. This Sunday I parked on Big Hollow Road, went to the second peak west of Burnt Knob via Black Dome/Escarpment trail, then back east over Acra Point, and back down on the Batavia Kill Trail. It was cold and sleet was coming down. It felt kind of strange with a sunburn from the previous day. It was gray out, with a few times with blue sky peaking out between the snow squalls.

Falling Snow

Watching the snow come down on the mountains was cool, as they rolled in and out. On Acra Point I couldn’t see anything at all because it was coming down so hard. Other times, it would just appear hazy from the ice pellets taking away from the clearness of the day.

White Out

I wish the weather bad been nicer for taking photos. There where some real nice views up there, argumentatively nicer then some that you see from Windham High Point, which is several hundred feet higher. I do want to do redo this part of the trail once things green up out there. I plan to continue doing more of the escartment trail, each weekend a new section. My goal is to hike a new mountain every weekend, until it gets too warm out do it comfortably.

Tulip Time!

That feeling at work.
