July 17, 2017 9 AM Update

Good morning! Welcome to warmest part of summer with temperatures expected to reach 84 degrees with dewpoints in the upper 60s.Β We expect hot and muggy summer weather all week. The muggy weather ends Friday around 11 pm.

The sun will set at 8:29 pm with dusk around 9:02 pm, which is 43 seconds earlier than yesterday. At sunset, look for thunderstormsΒ and 76 degrees. The dew point will be 69 degrees. Β Hot and humid. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 55 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 35 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before midnight, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after midnight. Some of the storms could produce small hail, gusty winds, and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low of 68 degrees at 3am. Five degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 69 at 6pm. South wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2016, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 66 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1939.

On this day in 1944, Near the San Francisco Bay, two ships laden with ammunition for the war explode in Port Chicago, California, killing 320. Also on this day, another deadly tragety. In 1981, A structural failure leads to the collapse of a walkway at the Hyatt Regency in Kansas City, Missouri killing 114 people and injuring more than 200.

Today I will call about getting the brakes checked. It will give me some piece of mind and avoid annoyance when I’m creeping in Ithaca traffic. I’m sure there will be plenty of stop and go there. I think it will be a simple enough job that an ordinary brake shop should be able to fix it. I have one I’ve gone to in the past on Central Avenue, and they should be fine. Annoying that I need more work after replacing the brakes last fall, but sometimes things need to be adjusted or mud got into them or some bull shit. It’s about keeping things well maintained.

Next week at this point I should be in the Finger Lakes, hopefully just finishing up breakfast and getting ready to visit the pool. It will be nice to be spending time at the pool, relaxing and hiking the gorges. I’m bringing my kayak so I’ll be able to do some paddling too. I will lock it up in the campsite I’m undecided if I will go down to Presque Isle for its festival or not but if the weather is nice that’s always a fun way to cap off the week.

Tonight I plan to wash my truck and maybe vacuum out the inside and do some cleaning before my trip. I also have to return some library books and may be clean some of the camping gear. I want to put some superglue on the camp storage box so it stops coming apart. And some miscellaneous things.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Mutts Day when the sun will be setting at 8:16 pm with dusk at 8:47 pm. On that day in 2016, we had rain, drizzle, fog, mist, cloudy skies and temperatures between 71 and 63 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 98 back in 1917.
