Within a 10 Minute Walk to a Supermarket

If you don't own a car, there is only a few parts of Albany where you can walk a short distance to get to a supermarket.

Green areas are those within a 10 minute walk of a major supermarket -- Price Chopper, Hannaford, Tops, Shop-Rite, or Walmart.

Ethnic supermarkets πŸ›’

Lately, I’ve developed a keen interest in ethnic stores. Unlike supermarkets, which tend to inflate prices significantly on essential items like rice, beans, and spices – particularly those that cater to healthier, basic diets, ethnic stores offer a refreshing alternative. Supermarkets often capitalize on the fact that these wholesome foods aren’t in high demand among their typical shoppers, allowing them to raise the prices with the understanding that they won’t move as quickly – much like how convenience stores tend to overprice everyday items such as bread and milk.

Interestingly, Walmart has emerged as a surprising contender, boasting a more extensive selection and more affordable prices on many nutritious staples like dried beans, rice, and specific spices compared to the majority of supermarkets. Moreover, Walmart consistently stocks Greek yogurt, whereas local supermarkets often struggle to keep this section adequately supplied. An amusing anecdote: it seems Hannaford, for instance, barely manages to keep one container of plain Greek yogurt hidden away, only to have it vanish by nine o’clock every morning.

For those seeking even more diverse options, India Market comes to the forefront. Here, you can find ghee, a healthier dairy fat option for cooking and spreading, boasting a nutty flavor. Additionally, they offer kefir, a nutrient-rich fermented dairy product packed with protein and probiotics. Kefir is often regarded as an even more wholesome alternative to Greek yogurt, further enhancing the appeal of these ethnic stores.

June 26, 2019 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? A Hot Ol Hump Day, of course. Sunny and 72 degrees on Delaware Ave, taking the bus to work. 🌞 Calm wind. The dew point is 61 degrees. Pretty nice morning, much cooler than last night when it was rather humid.

As planned, I got my hair cut πŸ’‡ and I feel a whole lot less shaggy. I dropped off my dry cleaning.πŸ•΄Going to stop at Hannaford this evening for some food, and maybe some oven cleaner or other grocery-store style degreaser to clean the camp stove. Then I will re-assemble it this evening, and maybe go down to the park.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 86 degrees at 2pm. Five degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 61 at 9am. Nice warm day but modest humidity. But do watch for the thunderstorms later. β›ˆCalm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 80 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1952.

The sun will set at 8:37 pm with dusk around 9:12 pm, which is 2 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for thunderstorms 🌩 and temperatures around 78 degrees. The dew point will be 61 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 15 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, an increase of 21 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 10pm. Partly cloudy 🌀, with a low of 66 degrees at 4am. Six degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 63 at 11pm. Light south wind. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2018, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 63 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1970.

On this day in 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy gave his “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech, 🍩 underlining the support of the United States for democratic West Germany shortly after Soviet-supported East Germany erected the Berlin Wall. And pastry too. Also, The Universal Product Code is scanned for the first time in 1974 to sell a package of Wrigley’s chewing gum at the Marsh Supermarket in Troy, Ohio. UPC are so handy, kind of fun to scan into your phone with the lookup code app.

Looking ahead, there are 7 weeks until Altamont Fair Opens 🎑 when the sun will be setting at 7:58 pm with dusk at 8:28 pm. Fair season is fun. On that day in 2018, we had humid weather, partly sunny skies with a few rain showers and temperatures between 85 and 71 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 81 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1988.

May 14, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. I think that should be an impeachable offense. DΓ©jΓ Β  Moo, the feeling I’ve seen this bull before.Β Two weeks to Memorial Day πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ. Coming fast. Mostly cloudy and 54 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a south breeze at 6 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 48 degrees. The skies will clear around 11 am.

I know I will be walking outside to the Capitol to get fresh air later on. Six degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 55 at 4pm. Southwest wind around 7 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 60 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1900.

The dew point will be 56 degrees. Definitely if I get out of work this evening early enough I’ll go down to the park. Otherwise I might There will be a south-southwest breeze at 7 mph. Frozen cherries on waffles is a nice change.πŸ’ I like blueberries but this is a nice change. I found a big bag yesterday at Hannaford. I also have some bananas that are rapidly going bad that I should use for breakfast soon. I also bought generic Chex 🍲 for a snack but I might have that for breakfast too in the next few weeks.

Did some more cleaning. It seems like I’m always tracking mud in my apartment and spilling shit. I hate carpet.Β I still like the idea, half seriously of having a gutter track like a barn to shovel all the crap into. πŸ’©Β Or at least tile or hardwood floors. And much less of a vapor barrier leakage and mildew problem like my apartment. And a fire pit or burn barrel to burn all the junk up.πŸ”₯

Picked up my dry cleaning. I have to admit my second jacket that I’ve been wearing since I dropped the other one off is starting to wear out.Β πŸ•΄I think it’s almost ten years old now.Β  Been a good jacket that I’ve worn for years but threads are starting to look warm and some of the fabric looks like it got too hot when cleaned at some point.Β Maybe next year I’ll buy a new jacket. And shoes.

Big Red seems fine. It drives perfectly fine so I’m thinking I was just noticing the ordinary sway on State Street last night. I was tired and I may have noticed the shitty pavement more then usual. I’ve been playing with it, cornering hard a few times, parallel parking it, and driving it around with the windows down and it’s handling normally with no noises or evidence of problems.πŸš—Β I inspected the components and looked for things loose. None noticed. It’s something I’ll keep a watch on. When I mount the solar panel I’m the truck cap I want to try some rough roads at any rate to confirm its mounted tightly. I’ll look for handling issues there. I don’t want to get stranded but I also don’t want to spend money until I have a dang good reason to do so.

Want to pick up some more groceries after work. I forgot to buy dish soap, laundry detergent and cheese. πŸ§€That’s fine I’ll go past a supermarket in the evening as I have to drive home from the park and ride.πŸ›

Tired didn’t get to bed until after 11. Slept into 7:30 but still was a long weekend stuck in the office. I should have gotten to bed earlier but so be it. I think it will be a fairly quiet day at work and hopefully I won’t be stuck in the office too late.😴

Still thinking of taking Thursday and Friday off. I just want to take some time to get away from work after all these long days at work. πŸ–And maybe work on hooking up the solar panel. I’m thinking it will be fairly quiet the second half of the week so I should be able to get those days off. Memorial Day Weekend people have already taken off those days.

Most of this week looks to be cloudy. ☁Some sun this afternoon maybe, but I’m not looking forward to much blue skies. That’s why I’m not sure how nice the weekend will be. But it would be nice to get away if the weekend is decent, otherwise we are already butting up against Memorial Day Weekend.

Schoharie for the weekend?Β If the weather is nice I’m thinking about heading out there, doing some hiking in the Northern Catskills.🚢 Then maybe the cliffs of Middleburg and Vromans Nose.🚜 I don’t know if there is much at the farm stands at this point, but Schoharie is always a nice drive. Look forward to Mine Kill pool open in a little over a month.🏊 Maybe do some fishing in the Schoharie Creek and camp at Burnt-Rossman Hills. I’ve heard they’ve renovated Betty Brook Road over the past year.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Memorial Day πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ when the sun will be setting at 8:23 pm with dusk at 8:57 pm. On that day in 2017, we had cloudy skies and temperatures between 74 and 60 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 73 degrees. We hit a record high of 93 back in 2016.

Greenville.

Heading up to Kaaterskill Falls on Tuesday afternoon, I drove through Greenville, the town outside of the Catskills Mountains that I went to High School in. It was kind of a cloudy mid-winter afternoon, but it driving through the town brought back many memories of childhood, including Bryant's Supermarket (now a Hannaford), the Westerner shop, Scott M. Ellis Elementary School, the library, the Town Park, and other lands. And the Catskill Mountains directly to the south. A lot has changed in the town, while a lot has remained the same.
