February 9, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday β›ͺ ! Three weeks to March 🌨. Cloudy and 14 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ Calm wind. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️Things will start to thaw out at around 1 pm. 🌡️

It’s a cold and overcast morning but I’m hopeful it will warm up soon and I’m thinking it might be a decent day. Maybe more clouds than I’d like but so be it. Later on I’m thinking about hiking at Schodack Island before running to the store 🏬 and maybe washing the truck. 🛀 More sun β˜€ expected by afternoon and temperatures above freezing.

Today will have isolated snow showers between 8am and noon. Mostly cloudy β›…, with a high of 34 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 11th. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 31 degrees. The record high of 57 was set in 1925. 13.7 inches of snow fell back in 1906.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:10 pm with sun having an altitude of 32.6Β° from the due south horizon (-38.2Β° vs. 6/21). The golden hour 🏅 starts at 4:39 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (244Β°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (251Β°) starting at 5:16 pm and lasts for 3 minutes and 5 seconds with dusk around 5:47 pm, which is one minute and 19 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 6:22 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies 🌃 and temperatures around 33 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 34 seconds over yesterday.

The solar panel did a nice job at topping off the batteries 🔋 after leaving my truck parked for a week. 🅿 Started real easy yesterday. I am very happy how the system is working on the truck now, I just gotta wait for camping season β›Ί when there are long days and lots of sun.

I wrote a nice little CDTA bus real time mapping app but I want to test it more and set up caching before I make it public. 🚍Really fast too, I was surprised. I really like it and my concern is that if I make it public it could become too popular and use a lot of Google Maps API calls and I’d have to pay for overage fees. Buts it’s definitely good for my personal use now. 🌐

Tonight will snow, mainly after 1am. ❄ Before then cloudy 🌨, with a low of 30 degrees at 8pm. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 27th. South wind 6 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. Might make a bit of a nuisance for the Monday commute but I don’t know. In 2019, we had clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 17 degrees. The record low of -21 occurred back in 1948.

🌹🌻🌼Only 39 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!🌹🌻🌼

That’s certainly less than 40 days. ☺ Always funny how when we get to the second week of March it seems like spring is coming quicker. I thought for sure that we would get a real arctic blast come February but besides a cool start to this morning this doesn’t seem the case.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until March 🌨 when the sun will be setting at 5:45 pm with dusk at 6:13 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 39 and 14 degrees. That will be nice. Typically, the high temperature is 39 degrees. We hit a record high of 66 back in 2017. I think that was the year I went camping at Burnt Rossman Hills State Forest in March. Pretty cool well actually warm.

April 29, 2018 Evening

Good evening! Damp and kind of cloudy but not too wet, around 42 degrees in Westerlo, NY. β˜” Breezy, 16 mph breeze from the west-northwest 🌬 . Kind of cold and nasty this evening at my parents house. The skies will clear tomorrow around 8 pm. It wouldn’t have been a bad afternoon for fishing but I got working on cleaning and various projects around the man-cave at home. 🧹 🍽 Tub was getting kind of clogged up with mildew, so that needed a good scrub.

Tonight will rain showers likely before 5am, then rain and snow showers likely. Cloudy β˜” , with a low of 38 degrees at 4am. Four degrees below normal. West wind around 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. Too warm to stick on the roads. After all, only two days to May. In 2017, we had cloudy skies, clearing in the early hours of the next day. It got down to 42 degrees. The record low of 25 occurred back in 1874.

The sun will set at 7:53 pm with dusk around 8:24 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for rain ☁ and 44 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 14 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 2 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 32 seconds over yesterday.

Tomorrow will rain and snow showers likely before 7am, then a chance of rain showers. Cloudy β˜” , with a high of 52 degrees at 3pm. 12 degrees below normal. Northwest wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 53 degrees. The record high of 86 was set in 1903. There was a dusting of snow in 2008.❄

Yesterday was the Save the Pine Bush hike. It was a nice hike, after which we went over to Yonder Farms for lunch and their wonderful cookiesπŸͺ (me the health nut should emphasize), and then I went for another longer hike in the Albany Pine Bush by myself. Got kind of sticky by mid-afternoon🌲 — while the dew point was low, the air was kind of stagnant and I was over-dressed as we had a first blast of summer weather. Well, at least spring weather. Nice but there was a lot of people on the trails,πŸ‘ͺ which was less nice for the hiking alone part.

Spent too much time last night soldering together wires and modules to build a big, 3 foot long by 2 inch high display using MAX7219 display modules. πŸ’»It’s nice, now I know the time from bed. Along with many quotes and savings. Fun stuff. Still working out some of the bugs in the code and adjusting things, but things are getting there. I had to add some capacitors (two 480 picofarad ones) to smooth the voltage and use a bigger USB power supply, as with 6 of the MAX7219 4-1 modules chained together (a total of 24 modules or 35-40 character display easily read across the room), they use upwards of 0.7 amp at 5 volts. Which isn’t a big deal with most cellphone chargers,⚑ but the one I tried it out initially was a cheapily one that started to drop voltage at as little as 1/2 amp.

Over all, it uses about 3-4 watts of power at maximum brightness, although in the evening it drops down to 2 watts when dimmer and less then a watt at night when it shut off. Maybe uses a kilowatt hour a month. πŸ”ŒBut I like it and I think I can afford an extra 2 cents a day to operate it. I will certainly unplug the unit when I’m gone on trips and traveling for work. I plan eventually to build a second version of this large display sign, so I can use it for other projects. Maybe not in my bedroom but it might be fun at work, especially when I’m out in the field for directing people to sign in, etc. I can draw any message I want on it, although I have to be careful how many of the 1,536 LEDs I light at once, because the amperage can really add up with lots of things lit up.πŸ”¦ I really like the larger version of the sign.

Updating to Quantum GIS 3.02 fixed a bug that is allowing me to export KML and make some interactive maps.πŸ‘Ύ For a while a lot of my shapefiles were putting out invalid geometery errors which kept me from simplifying the shapefiles to convert them into KML/Google Maps format. πŸ—ΊBut hopefully now I’ll be able to make up more interesting Google Maps for your enjoyment.

Yesterday I was going to go down to the libraryπŸ“š and upload a bunch of stuff on the blog, but that did not happen because it started to rain and thunder,β›ˆ and I ended up working on a lot of soldering and writing code last night for the big version of my sign. I haven’t been to the library in a few weeks, although I might end up going down there if we have another cold night — but at this point — I’ll probably just walk down to the park when I need to use the internet.πŸ₯

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Mothers Day πŸ‘©β€ when the sun will be setting at 8:09 pm with dusk at 8:41 pm. On that day in 2017, we had rain, mist, cloudy skies and temperatures between 55 and 47 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 69 degrees. We hit a record high of 86 back in 2004.

May 6, 2017 Night

Good evening! Heavy rain and 56 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south-southwest breeze at 8 mph. The dew point is 50 degrees. 0.31 inches of rain is expected before it ends Monday around 7 pm.

Tonight will rain with possibly a thunderstorm before midnight, then scattered showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low of 48 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal. South wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2016, it got down to 43 degrees with periods of shallow fog and patches of fog. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1874.

Well I hope I don’t have pink eye but my right eye is a bit irritated because I got something in it while I was fishing down at Henry Hudson Park this afternoon. I put in a fresh contact in it and drove home and flushed it out well with contact solution but it’s still recovering but that may in part be due to eye strain from wearing glasses. I think it will be better by morning or maybe I’ll be four eyes for a few days if I picked up pink eye from the tiny little rock bass I caught and tossed back in the Hudson River.

Fishing at the Hudson River wasn’t bad but it was crowded, and the wind was a bit intense. Very high water levels from the high tide combined with the run off from the rain. Made casting a bit tricky. I need more sinkers. The red worms were fine, despite leaving them in my truck for a week under the seat. I’m surprised they didn’t cook in the heat but I guess lately it hasn’t been that warm. There was a party for elementary school kids at the pavilion, so they had obnoxious children music playing, so that didn’t make me want to stay for sure. It looked like there was some kind of rescue operation on the river as the Selkirk Fire Department had their rescue boat out there and some police down at the other end of the park. Not sure what that was all about.

Hooked up the oscillating 12 volt fan in the truck cap. It just plugs into a cigarette lighter port and has a quite strong spring clip that seems to mount to rail on the truck cap just fine. Puts out a nice amount of air and the voltage drop is minimal in part thanks to the heavy wire I used to wire it.

Wrote some code so I can use alternative colors for mapping primary races with Google Maps. The script I use for mapping had blue and red hard coded in but I’ve added new color options. Going to start making some Google Maps of recent Albany County primaries.

I was going to return the old accessory  battery from my truck so I could get the core fee back at Walmart but the automotive section door was locked and closed.  I noticed the paramedic car and Bethlehem police there, so I wonder if there was some kind of accident. I’ll have to swing by there tomorrow to  get rid of that battery. I don’t care that much about getting back my core fee but I don’t want the battery sitting on my lawn forever.

That rain is loud on the roof tonight but I don’t think it will last. I’m fine with us beefing up the ground water supply before the warmth of summer comes and things start to dry out. It looks like we will be stuck in this pattern for a while but I’m hoping the forecast for next weekend will change, so I have a nice weekend to get away.

Waxing Gibbous Moon tonight with 77% illuminated. The moon will set around 4:35 am. You ain’t going to see it with the rain although maybe the clouds will break later. The Full β€œFlower” Moon is on Wednesday night with mostly cloudy skies expected. The sun will rise at 5:41 am with the first light at 5:10 am, which is one minute and 15 seconds earlier than yesterday. Tonight will have 9 hours and 38 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 18 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have scattered showers, mainly after 9am. Cloudy, with a high of 54 degrees at 12pm. 12 degrees below normal. South wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had shallow fog, patches of fog, then some sun and a high of 66 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1930. 0.2 inches of snow fell back in 1967.

In four weeks on June 3 the sun will be setting at 8:28 pm, which is 26 minutes and 40 seconds later then tonight. In 2016 on that day, we had rain and temperatures between 79 and 63 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 75 and 53 degrees. The record high of 97 degrees was set back in 1925.
