πŸ”₯🌲 Off-Grid Living 🏠🀠

I am seriously thinking about building an off-grid house. I have a first draft. I need to learn CAD! I have a road map towards buying land and building. I concede might have to live with long commute and give up traveling and camping. I need to be strong.

Why off grid? Well, I’m not into contemporary society. I want to own land, but not be called a landowner, and a cabin, not hooked to electrical grid, farm, raise pigs for food and burn my own trash. I’m saving for a better tomorrow, hoping to make the leap to another freer state. Having acreage is important. Cornfields aren’t bad neighbors. Maybe though my vision has grown smaller and more local. More on off-grid living.

I am 16 years into my career and have made some significant progress in my life. I love my job. But I do wonder on all the things I’m missing out but saving sure makes me high. Maybe it will be different when I own my own land — the end of goal of all this saving.

2020 into 2021 during the pandemic was a year of remote work. It was a struggle not having internet at home, worked a lot out of my truck. But I worked remotely from Horseshoe Lake which was super cool.

Generally I like the idea of owning land in a red state, particularly Idaho, Iowa, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Wisconsin — and Midwest more generally. But I may settle for New York – it’s all about the f-ing money!

πŸ’»πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’» Open Source πŸ—ΊοΈπŸ“

I use open source software and public sources of data for the blog. Quantum GIS (QGIS), GDAL/ogr2ogr, PyQGIS, GeoPANDAS, R Studio and Leaflet for map making, Arduino and ESP32 microprocessors, Ubuntu Linux and XFCE Window Manager. I’ve recently gotten interested in machine learning.

I avoid using commercial software like Microsoft Windows and do not have home internet or television. If you don’t use commercial software and use your brain, fears of computer viruses are overblown. I deleted most of my social media accounts.

πŸ“ŠπŸ—Ί R Statistical Programming πŸ“œπŸ‘¨β€πŸ«

The R programming language and RStudio are powerful tools for statistical analysis, making maps and charts. Many of the blog posts and analysis I do are in R, ggplot not only makes great charts but also maps using tidycensus. Generally, R is better then Python for geospatial work.

I often think politics is for losers. I’m into the politics of statistical analysis and reading history books.

I believe strongly in the first amendment, second amendment, oppose gun restrictions and I support de-funding the police in favor of lower-cost technology and civilian employees. Maybe use red flag laws for voting to stop dangerous voters? And the media should stop promoting mass-shootings, even if it’s super profitable for all involved. They should tax the media when it promotes violence. I think some people are much too paranoid in politics. How elections are rigged under law to benefit incumbents. But vote, it’s the best option and inexpensive.

Yeah for the third parties! I voted for Larry Sharpe for Governor and Jo Jergenson for President but my views are complicated and often vote for Democrats, after voting Jill Stein Green Party in 2016.

Generally, I think Biden has been a good change over DJT and glad the Trump era is over and are glad prosecutors and grand jurors are holding him responsible by indicting him for many serious felonies. I don’t think Trump can win in 2024, as nothing has changed politically from 2020.

I think rural people should be left alone and not worship government workers or have parades for them. I am no fan of Donald Trump, his speeches are bad, I don’t like Trump’s embrace of radical environmentalists, but do admire the homemade roadside monuments to DJT.

I don’t toke. But whatever. There are too many transit authorities.

🌲🌳The Earth 🌎 🐸

Why I oppose wilderness areas and parks. It’s trendy to be green these days, but is eco-marketing good for the planet? I visited the Mount Storm Coal Plant and Corridor H.

I worry about a lot about overly-aggressive Climate Change Action, and Undermining Environment Laws for Climate Action. I think we should all admit we are Addicted to Fossil Fuels. These days, urban recycling has become a joke, when it’s still an option at all. It’s better to just buy less shit and avoid the alure of Costcos. I really don’t like how aging radicals have become industrial solar salespeople.

Big bucks are coming to state-designated disadvantaged communities under the CLCP. Which counties and political districts are in line for the the most pork? Interactive map.

I’m a big of farmers who are essentially Living Off the Earth and think Rednecks are Noble Savages. Dairy Farming are key to our rural landscape. I’d trust a farmer or a hunter in a pile of guts he’s butchered over any ivory-tower scientist.

πŸ’³ πŸ’ΈSaving Money πŸ’° πŸ’·

I am not a fan of ESG Investing as it’s not well diversified. I prefer index-funds and other tax-advantaged ways of saving. Why I am concerned about saving enough for retirement, even though I’m in my late 30s. We as a nation should save more, consume less. I like the idea of carbon tax to replace capital gains taxes to discourage consumption.

πŸ₯¦ 🍎Mission Fifty & Being Healthier 🏠🧠

I am now officially in my 40s! I am building to a better life in my 50s, which means getting up early, walking a lot, saying no to cake and yes to more fruit. In many ways, the forties are an awesome time to be alive.

And eating healthy for less without losing sleep over arsenic. And I don’t think we should subsidize unhealthy habits. How I got started in eating healther. Meals are too focused on meat and carbs due to how we describe them, maybe I eat too many bananas in the office, what to eat while camping, worry more about salt then GMOs, eat more beans. Do spend extra for farmers market peaches, especially doughnut peaches and plums. Consider ethnic supermarkets. Thinking about how to make a healthier macaroni and cheese, spinach-mackeral-pasta salad, quick-cook biscuits and whole-wheat bread. That said, too many recipes are junk food crap. Okay in moderation is not okay. The fact that I’m thinner is not a sign I’m dying.

A few years back I decided to explore my mental illness with therapy, thinking about why I have so much anxiety and how many of my values are rational or just thinking too much rednecks’ burn barrels and how much of a throwaway society we live in. Do I want to change?

I’ve learned to care less about the world, and focus more on myself. Maybe I am happier as I am now, saving and investing a lot towards owning my own land, where I don’t have to deal with all the bullshit of modern life.

May 7, 2017 Night

Good evening! Cloudy and 41 degrees in Westerlo. There is a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. The skies will clear Wednesday around 5 am. Kind of a damp evening, but still sleeping in my truck at my parents house, because I like to spend a least one night a week under the truck cap. It will be plenty warm under my covers though.

Finally got the code working to make the primary election maps up in Google Maps.Β I will post the first one tomorrow. I couldn’t figure out why my colors weren’t displaying right — I forgot colors are backwards in Google Maps, and forgot to reverse their order when setting the colors. Once I swapped the red and blue channels, things worked perfectly. Tomorrow I’m posting a map of the 2016 Republican Presidential Primary. More primary race maps coming soon.

Also, did you see I posted an updated Google MapΒ of all the lean-tos in the state,Β and tomorrow will be sharing a list of lean-tos. People like that list a lot, and it’s been a long time since I’ve uploaded an newer version. It’s pretty simple export from Quantum GIS, but it does take some manipulation in OpenOffice Calc and some HTML to make it display properly. But that’s one of many new GIS-style content I have for next week.

I had Sunday dinner at my parents house,Β where they celebrated Cinco de Mayo late this year. Mom made this really good Mexican-style casserole for dinner. Something she found out of a magazine, but it was remarkably good. And now I’m sleeping in the truck.

The new LED reading lamp I got is impressively bright.Β I plugged it into my USB port I have in my truck cap, and it really lit things up well for reading. Absolutely no problem reading the book, which appeared bright white, even four feet away. I have an 12 volt/USB extension cord which means I can take the light even farther back for reading by the campfire or plug into one of those USB battery packs I have at home. It also will light the tailgate up well when I’m sitting out back and having a cold one or two.

Tonight will have a slight chance of rain showers before 3am, then a slight chance of rain and snow showers. Cloudy, with a low of 35 degrees at 5am. 10 degrees below normal. West wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2016, it got down to 45 degrees with rain and mist. The record low of 26 occurred back in 1968.

Waxing Gibbous Moon tonight with 83% illuminated. The moon will set around 5:12 am. The Full β€œFlower” Moon is on Wednesday night with mostly cloudy skies expected. The sun will rise at 5:41 am with the first light at 5:10 am, which is one minute and 13 seconds earlier than yesterday. Tonight will have 9 hours and 37 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 16 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of rain and snow showers before 7am, then a chance of rain showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high of 48 degrees at 3pm.Β Cold day, essentially 19 degrees below normal. West wind 9 to 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. A year ago, we had mist then mostly sunny skies and a high of 59 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1936. There was a dusting of snow in 1977.

The long range doesn’t look that great for next weekend. Major bummer! Next Saturday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 62. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 46 at 4pm. Maybe Saturday will be okay but chilly. We’ll have to watch it. Next Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 61. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 46 at 5pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 69 degrees.

In four weeks on June 4 the sun will be setting at 8:29 pm, which is 26 minutes and 10 seconds later then tonight. In 2016 on that day, we had heavy fog, fog, shallow fog, patches of fog, mist, cloudy skies and temperatures between 84 and 61 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 75 and 53 degrees. The record high of 97 degrees was set back in 1919.

If it ever gets that warm,Β I have the fan up and running in my truck cap.Β It’s not a real big fan but being oscillating and having fairly well designed blades and speed, it pushes the air around well in the truck cap. The truck cap is relatively small space, so it preforms well. It will be nice when it gets warm. It’s clipped onto the bed rail in the truck, but can be easily moved to clip on the tailgate or table, so when sitting back at camp, and I want to stay cool or keep the bugs off me in the mid-summer.

Looking ahead, Mother’s Day is Next Sunday, Father’s Day is in 6 weeks, Buck Moon is in 9 weeks, National Cheese Cake Day is in 12 weeks, Strugeon Moon is in 3 months, 7 PM Sunset is in 19 weeks, Average High is 60 is in 23 weeks, Daylight Savings Time Ends is in 26 weeks, Election Day 2017 is in 6 months, Cold Moon is in 30 weeks and New Years Eve is in 34 weeks.

DEC Region 5 North

Interactive Google Map consisting of federal, state, local, and non-governmental public lands and parks within the following counties in DEC Region 5 North: Clinton, Essex, Franklin and Hamilton counties. Up to 6 additional counties (for a total of ten) can be added to the map. Data can be downloaded as KML and GPX Tracks and Waypoints for use in Google Earth or handheld GPS units.

Updated on March 27, 2017. This region only saw minor updates, with a handful of additional campsites, lean-tos and trails added from the updated DEC data.

January 6, 2017 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 16 degrees in Delmar. There is a west-northwest breeze at 5 mph. I went for my evening walk but I did bundle up and still my goatee was starting to freeze up by the time I got home.

Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low of 11 degrees at 6am. Six degrees below normal. Northwest wind 3 to 5 mph. In 2016, it got down to 12 degrees under partly clear skies. The record low of -12 occurred back in 1878.

Pushed forward some minor changes to the blog, which approve its appearance on the modern wide-screen monitors of today but downgrade nicely for mobile devices. The Google Maps section in particular has a nice design refresh. I re-enabled comments on most of the site which a previous design had removed due to space constraints. Removed a few other rarely used parts of the site for simplicity sake. Also doing some cleaning up of the site backend, removing some legacy code I no longer use.

Waxing Gibbous Moon tonight with 61% illuminated. The moon will set around 3:31 am. The Full β€œWolf” Moon is on Thursday night with mostly cloudy skies expected and chance of rain then chance of rain/snow. The sun will rise at 7:24 am with the first light at 6:53 am, which is 9 seconds earlier then yesterday. Tonight will have 14 hours and 46 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 1 minutes and 11 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of snow after 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high of 23 degrees at 2pm. Seven degrees below normal. North wind 3 to 8 mph. A fairly cold winter’s day. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had partly sunny skies and a high of 40 degrees. The record high of 56 was set in 1915. 7.2 inches of snow fell back in 1994.

In four weeks on February 3 the sun will be setting at 5:12 pm, which is 34 minutes later then tonight. In 2016 on that day, we had rain and temperatures between 57 and 30 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 32 and 15 degrees. The record high of 57 degrees was set back in 2016.

Looking ahead, Inauguration Day is in 2 weeks and April Fools Day is in 12 weeks. Not that one would really notice the difference.

May 21, 2018 10 PM Update

Good evening! Mostly clear and 54 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 47 degrees.

Kind of a pleasant evening. Went down to the park for a while with my laptop, mostly ended up wasting my time on YouTube and making maps📺. I need to come up with some more Google Maps again but I’ve been lazy. It’s just a matter of getting the data and plotting them. I know I should have brought a book and done some reading. Well I’ll have plenty of time to read during the long weekend if I’m camping in the wilderness. 📚

Sitting out back with the firefly light projector which is pretty but with the moonlight it’s almost not dark enough to enjoy them. 🌠Its a pretty toy but with my other lights it’s often too bright in the woods to work well plus the motor in it is super noisy. Solar panel topped up the battery nicely in the truck today so even if I were to tire out the battery tonight it would be charged by tomorrow although slower as its expected to be quite xloudy and rainy.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ☁, with a low of 54 degrees at 10pm. Five degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 49 at 6am. Calm wind. In 2017, we had mostly cloudy skies. It got down to 49 degrees. The record low of 33 occurred back in 2002.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon 🌔 with 51% illuminated. The moon will set at 2:03 am. The Flower Moon 🌕 is next Monday with partly cloudy skies expected. Might be a nice evening to sit out back. The sun will rise at 5:26 am with the first light at 4:53 am, which is 50 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 9 hours and 8 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 47 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have showers likely, with thunderstorms also possible after 3pm. Cloudy ☁ , with a high of 64 degrees at 2pm. Seven degrees below normal. Maximum dew point of 54 at 12pm. Light south wind increasing to 8 to 13 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Solar cells ain’t going to produce a lot of electricity tomorrow for sure. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly cloudy skies. The high last year was 61 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1911.

Today I dressed up for work but it was totally unnecessary.💩 Turns out it wasn’t a session day. I should have read my calendar.👔Tomorrow and Wednesday are session days although tomorrow may be a long day and they skip Wednesday. Hopefully not too late as I don’t want to drive in tomorrow.

I feel like I’m starting to get another sinus infection. 👃I hope not, I’m tired of getting sick.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. πŸ˜• Saturday, a chance of thunderstorms after 2pm. ⚑Partly sunny, with a high near 83. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 63 at 4pm. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 63 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 72 degrees. This might be a workable weekend for heading out of town but to where I’ve yet to decide.🐥 Still leaning towards the Southern Adirondacks to camp and fish. Not sure if I will bother with the kayak as I have to adjust the rack before mounting it back up there and I’d rather focus on stream fishing for trout🎣 and hiking over messing with the kayak.

In four weeks on June 18 the sun will be setting at 8:36 pm,🌄 which is 18 minutes and 48 seconds later then tonight. In 2017 on that day, we had rain, mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 88 and 72 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 79 and 57 degrees. The record high of 97 degrees was set back in 1957.

Looking ahead, Memorial Day 🇺🇸 is in 1 weeks, Labor Day 👨‍🏭 is in 15 weeks, Consitution Day 👨‍🏭 is in 17 weeks, Columbus Day 🛥️ is in 20 weeks, Veterans Day Observed (Monday) 🇺🇸 is in 25 weeks, Cyber Monday 🛍️ is in 27 weeks and New Years Eve 🎆 is in 32 weeks.

🇺🇸🦅Only 3 days remain until the start of Memorial Day Weekend!🦅🇺🇸
