Why I Still Like David Soares.
Despite problems in his office, he cares and fights for good.
October 27, 2008.
District Attorney David Soares is a politician and he has no qualms about it. He uses his office to fight for what he believes is right, and to focus the publics' attention on the injustices of the day.
He provides leadership to an office filled with professional attorneys, providing them with a strong moral compass, and leadership not just for his county, but many other counties that look towards the Albany District Attorney's office for leadership.
The District Attorney, like many other government offices, has core responsibilities. It needs to protect the public from dangerous criminals by seeking appropriate sentences that match both the intent and reality of the law. It also needs to be fair and try to present the state's case in a fair and reasonable way in court. Those responsibilities are a given and we expect the DA to appoint professionals to do those things in a professional matter.
A District Attorney never has to step in a courtroom himself. He simply oversees an office of professionals and ensures that he hires the best and the brightest. When he has had problems with his staff, he has taken decisive action and worked to reform his office. He cares about the quality of his office, and this why I think he should be re-elected this year.
