"Memorial Day – a day originating in 1868 (Decoration Day), on which the gravesites of the Civil War dead were decorated with flowers – has morphed into a day that conflates the memorialization of killed soldiers with the glorification of war. The perennial flag-waving, ultra-nationalist speeches, garish street parades and hyper-consumerism of Memorial Day do not honor these soldiers. What might, however, is working to prevent future war and nurture peace – honoring their memory by not sending more men and women into harm’s way and to kill and maim in wars based on lies. To have any chance at being effective, however, this work must include efforts aimed at increasing public awareness about the many causes and costs of war."

One surprising upside of Trump… Peace ✌

While liberals for a while were pretty certain that President Trump was going to get us into war with Iran over his silly pissing match, one thing that seems likely is that we will get through his presidency without war.

Probably mostly dumb luck because the president has alienated both our allies and opponents alike and has managed to distabilize the world and actively worked to undermine global cooperation and unity. But I also think Trump is an isolationist and really doesn’t want to get the country into war.

Yet, that’s a terrible way to act on the international stage and it seems rather unbelievable that we are turning our back on the globe. We can and should do better.

Memorial Day is Tragic

I often think Memorial Day is one of the most tragic holidays, as it’s one that honors the war dead, young men and women killed by the folly of our leaders.

Most war could be ended if our leaders had more of a calm demeanor, more of an ability to listen and to bridge differences through discussion and negotiations rather than violence.

World-wide the planet is making progress at ending war but its happening at much too slow of a pace. Fewer people are dying in modern times from war but its still not obsolete yet. But it should be as war and violence is totally unnecessary in modern times.
