Chazy Highlands

The Chazy Highlands Management Complex is comprised of approximately 36,800 acres of state land in Clinton and Franklin Counties. Included in the unit are 26,900 acres of Forest Preserve, 8,600 acres of State Forest, and 1,300 acres of Wildlife Management Area. The Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan classifies all of these lands as Wild Forest. In addition to state-owned land, the unit includes conservation easements held by the state.

The Chazy Highlands has very few developed recreational facilities. Recreational activities which do occur in the unit include hunting, fishing, and hiking. State Routes 3 and 374 bisect the area, providing access to the facilities and resources. Important local roads for access include County Route 26 (Old Route 99), Standish Road, and Plank Road.

With the addition of the SSD drive to my laptop, I am able to process large digital elevation model files much quicker, so I've been playing more with hillshades of mountain ranges and making colorful pictures of the terrain below. This image shows some of the terrain in the lands west of Dannemora in Clinton County mountain country.

Dannemora Mountain Haul Road Trails

 Dannemora Mountain Haul Road Trails

Just north of Dannemora, as you climb Dannemora Mountain on NY 374, there is a pull off with a water fountain that is popular for tourists and locals seeking a source of good spring water. From there are several old haul road trails that you can hike along on Dannemora Mountain, a previously logged area that once supplied the wood used in the wood furnaces that heated Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora. At one time, the state brought prisoners up here to log the area, and provide heat for their facility. The mixed cover is good for wildlife viewing and hunting in this remote, little visited portion of the Northern Adirondacks.
