December 12, 2017 Morning

“Some people say this town don’t look good in snow, you don’t care I know.”  – America, Ventura Highway

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Six weeks to National Pie Day. Not that pie day, but the one in January where it can be square. Light snow and 34 degrees in Delmar, NY. Snow flurries around as is so common in the winter months. A little greasy on Kenwood Avenue past the Middle School but Delaware is just wet. Nuisance snow, not a real snow storm. There are some years where snow like this is a daily occurrence. There is a southeast breeze at 11 mph.
Today will rain and snow before 4pm, then a chance of rain between 4pm and 5pm, then a chance of rain and snow after 5pm. High of 38 degrees at 11am. One degree above normal. Southeast wind 6 to 11 mph becoming light and variable in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 40 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1979. 6.6 inches of snow fell back in 1970.

The sun will set at 4:22 pm with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 9 seconds later than yesterday. That’s much later. It’s accelerating. At sunset, look for cloudy conditions and 38 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 9 hours and 5 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 39 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of rain and snow showers before 7pm, then a chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low of 20 degrees at 6am. Three degrees below normal. West wind around 14 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. In 2016, we had mostly cloudy skies. It got down to 32 degrees. The record low of -6 occurred back in 1988.

The snow is coming down from the sky in wet and globy flakes and it’s kind of nice to see for a change. I would have liked to had seen some more snow but so be it. January and especially February and March are likely to snow more.

Looking ahead, there are 6 weeks until National Pie Day when the sun will be setting at 4:58 pm with dusk at 5:28 pm. On that day in 2017, we had rain, freezing rain, snow, sleet, mist, mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 39 and 32 degrees. Basically the same as today. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1906.
