December 11, 2017 5 PM Update

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 30 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The skies will clear Wednesday around 5 pm. It’s pretty cold this evening waiting for the express bus but now I’m on my way home. It’s an older hybrid bus this evening that smells like ozone, but it seems like it made it out to Delmar. Sentence to be re-written as necessary.

Two weeks from now the Christmas holiday will all but be over. Millions of presents will be unwrapped, people will be thinking about 2018 which will then be less than a week ahead. But in the mean time we have a snow storm coming which will be probably more of a sloppy mess than anything else here in the valley.

Tonight will have a chance of snow, mainly after 1am. Cloudy, with a low of 26 degrees at 7pm. Two degrees above normal. Maximum wind chill around 27 at 6pm; Calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 9 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2016, we had light snow in the evening, which became snow and freezing fog by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 28 degrees. The record low of -12 occurred back in 1988.

Tonight will have a Waning Crescent Moon with 31% illuminated. The moon will rise at 1:33 am. The New Moon is on Sunday night with a chance of snow showers. The is on Wednesday night. The sun will rise at 7:16 am with the first light at 6:44 am, which is 49 seconds later than yesterday. Tonight will have 14 hours and 54 minutes of darkness, an increase of 41 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will snow likely before 9am, then rain and snow between 9am and 11am, then rain after 11am. High of 39 degrees at 12pm. Two degrees above normal. Southeast wind 7 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly cloudy skies. The high last year was 40 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1979. 6.6 inches of snow fell back in 1970. I am not expecting that much though locally here.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 32. Sunday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. Typical average high for the weekend is 36 degrees. Saturday looks pretty nice although I have a family Christmas party to go to then.

In four weeks on January 8 the sun will be setting at 4:40 pm, which is 18 minutes and one second later then tonight. In 2017 on that day, we had snow, mist, mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 23 and 9 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 30 and 15 degrees. The record high of 60 degrees was set back in 2008.

It was a busy day catching up on the stuff I missed at work while I was sick, but I made good progress and got to leave at five. I’m feeling a lot better although my energy level is still a bit below normal. I’ll probably go to bed early, probably right after I get home from the library, which I will go down to after dinner.

I wonder how much snow there will be come Christmas. It would would be fun to go camping on Christmas, or maybe the weekend before. A lot depends on the weather and how much snow we there is around. I expect the Adirondacks to be pretty snowy for sure between the lake effect snow and other snow locally.

But other than that, it’s going to snow and be sloppy out tomorrow. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the rain and warm temperatures leaves us mostly snow free by evening tomorrow.

Looking ahead, Christmas is in 2 weeks, New Years Day 2018 is in 3 weeks, Martin Luther King Day is in 5 weeks, National Hot Sauce Day is in 6 weeks, 35th Birthday is in 7 weeks, Presidents Day is in 10 weeks, Memorial Day is in 24 weeks, Labor Day is in 38 weeks and Columbus Day is in 43 weeks.
