Sitting atop a storage building in the North End neighborhood of Albany, New York, is a four-ton, 28-foot tall steel and fiberglass statue of Nipper, the canine mascot of the Radio Corporation of America (RCA), the now-defunct consumer electronics behemoth.

According to the Albany Institute of History and Art, Nipper came to be perched atop the crenellated parapet in 1958 following renovation of the dilapidated concrete warehouse for use by RTA Corporation, an appliance distributor specializing in products by RCA. The statue was made in Chicago, shipped in five sections by rail, and attached to a metal frame on the roof with the aid of a 10-story crane.

The Hudson River has a new invasive species – round gobies.

State Department of Environmental Conservation fisheries staff members captured four at two locations in the Hudson River approximately 12 and 25 miles downstream of the Troy dam during routine fish sampling on July 13 and 14. This marks the the first documented occurrence of this invasive fish in the river.

The small, bait-size fish is native to the Black and Caspian seas and was likely introduced by ballast water to the Great Lakes in the 1990s. It has the potential to cause ecological and recreational impacts.

I was noticing the other day that the last time New York State did a complete aerial survey of Albany County was in 2017. It seems likely that they will be taking a new set of orthophotos of county and much of the Capital Region this April, as they typically survey each region of the state every 3-4 years during the month of April before the leaves are on the trees.
