Maintaining Tissue Sample Quality Might Reduce Medical Errors

"You might not suspect that the success of the emerging field of precision medicine depends heavily on the couriers who push carts down hospital halls."

"But samples taken during surgery may end up in poor shape by the time they get to the pathology lab β€” and that has serious implications for patients as well as for scientists who want to use that material to develop personalized tests and treatments that are safer and more effective."

Waste Pets

I am opposed to the notion of β€œrescue” pets and β€œshelters” that animal rights extremists have put forward lately. While I believe there should be a market for β€œused” and β€œsalvage” pets like dogs and cats, I think the reason we should be β€œsaving” unwanted or β€œstray” pets is not because they are cute or lovable, but because a β€œbred” pet involves a significant amount of labor and food to raise to become something that can be sold as a pet by the breeder.

So called β€œrescue” pets are usually a lot more affordable then β€œbred” pets. Not everybody can afford an expensive β€œbred” pet from a pet breeder. The β€œused” or β€œrescue” pet should be an affordable alternative, one that often comes house-broken or trained with skills not available on the β€œbred” market. Salvaging a used or stray dog and cat, should not be seen as a noble act, but one done to recover all the value and investment in that dog or cat. Shelters should not be seen as a shelters, but as salvage yards, there to recover useful value in the stock, rather then an entity to β€œsave” a pet, for which there is an inexhaustible supply.

Dogs and cats are inherently reproducible. Dogs and cats not neutered have puppies and kittens. They can have lots of them. After all, they are livestock, they can be indefinitely bred to produce to future stock. There is skill in raising them, there are materials consumed to produce future generations of pets, but for all practical purposes, the supply of dogs and cats will never be used up. If anything, there is an over-supply of pets in parts of the country, with undesirable and unwanted pets in need of disposal.

Disposal of unwanted pets can be done in an environmentally sustainable fashion. In a landfill, they are organic material which is unlikely to release hazardous materials, except the normal organics like methane and organic leachate into the environment. The same is true with incineration of unwanted pets – they are made up almost entirely of water and carbon-based organics like fat, muscle, and hair – and incinerated a proper temperatures are unlikely to produce much besides carbon dioxide and water vapor. Most pets are carnivores, which poses more problems with composting, but most industrial composting facilities reach temperatures to kill off pathogens. Obviously, with our carbon constrained future, industrial composting of waste pets is the best solution for disposal.

Salvaging β€œwaste” pets like dogs and cats, through so-called rescues makes sense, in so far as the pet has value. It saves resources to put a well-behaved, house broken but β€œunadopted” dog or a cat in a loving home, saving resources compared to raising a new dog or cat. It makes pet ownership more affordable for the working man. Salvage efforts through rescues, save energy, save human labor, save food, medicine, and other resources. But the disposal of unwanted pets with behavioral problems or injuries, that offer little value in resale, often makes sense as unwanted pets pose little ecological hazard in their disposal.

December 30, 2017 2:03 pm Update

The greatest winter extreme occurred on January 13, 1932 when we had 71 degree weather on a day that is normally 30 degrees. That’s a record that is 41 degrees above normal.

The greatest summer extreme happened on July 4, 1911 when we had 104 degree weather on a day that is normally 82 degrees. That’s a record 21 degrees above normal.

Albany’s climate is more stable in the summer than winter.

Animal rights extremists are destroying our country. No kill shelters are an idiotic idea. Only well behaved, desirable breeds of strays should be kept.

While I agree it's good idea to keep unwanted pets out of landfills to save space, I think incineration and industrial composting is a good solution for unwanted pets. Pathogens are more of a concern with pets that eat meat like dogs and cars but many industrial composting facilities get hot enough to destroy the most pathogens.

December 30, 2017 Morning

Good morning! Final Saturday of 2017! Tomorrow is New Years Eve. Light snow and zero degrees in Delmar, NY. Yeap, not a typo. Just cold and I need to walk to the store to get milk. Calm wind. The skies will clear around 10 pm.

Today will have light snow, mainly before 11am. Cloudy, with a high of 17 degrees at 2pm. 15 degrees below normal. South wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 35 degrees. The record high of 53 was set in 1984. 10.9 inches of snow fell back in 2000.

The sun will set at 4:31 pm with dusk around 5:03 pm, which is 48 seconds later than yesterday. At sunset, look for cloudy conditions and 17 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 7 minutes of daytime, a increase of 45 seconds over today.

Tonight will have a chance of snow showers, mainly before 9pm. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low of 5 degrees at 6am. 15 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -10 at 6am; Light northwest wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2016, we had mostly cloudy skies. It got down to 19 degrees. The record low of -17 occurred back in 1917.

The past few days I’ve been busy with family stuff and just plain tired. Its been cold lately but fortunately truck started with ease yesterday. At some point I should check the oil and windshield washer fluid levels though.

Tried to jump start one of my colleague’s cars but it would not start despite Big Red putting out like 15.6 volts. It’s just cold and when a battery fails it really does. Big Red is sluggish in the cold but runs fine.

I still haven’t gotten my inexpensive Bluetooth headphones yet. They may only be $20 but I want to be able to listen to music on the bus and walking around town. That’s kind of frustrating. I just wrote the company, I look forward to hearing back.

No real plans for this weekend, being that it is so cold. I have some projects I’m working on, need to do some cleaning and will probably go down to the library for a while today. The library is closed on New Years Eve and Day. Maybe I will bundle up and go cross country skiing on Sunday or Monday.

Looking ahead, there are 5 weeks until The Day the Music Died when the sun will be setting at 5:12 pm with dusk at 5:41 pm. On that day in 2017, we had cloudy skies and temperatures between 30 and 19 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 57 back in 2016.
