December 10, 2017 Night

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 29 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south-southwest breeze at 7 mph. The skies will clear tomorrow around 10 am. Not a really bad evening, although a bit cool and icy in areas that did not melt today.

We might get another half foot of snow tomorrow night into Tuesday. Maybe closer to a foot of snow in the Adirondacks. I am sure that the snowmobilers will rejoice. I often think about getting a sled but with climate change meaning snow is less common around here and my dislike of driving on icy roads, that’s not to be. Snowmobiling is a great deal of fun though. I parked Big Red on the side of the building on the grass, so I don’t get plowed in should the storm turn out to be a big one.
Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 26 degrees at 6am. Two degrees above normal. Maximum wind chill around 21 at 12am; Southwest wind around 7 mph. In 2016, we had partly cloudy skies. It got down to 13 degrees. The record low of -8 occurred back in 1988.

Tonight will have a Waning Crescent Moon with 41% illuminated. The moon will rise tomorrow at 12:30 am. The New Moon is next Sunday with partly cloudy skies.  The sun will rise at 7:15 am with the first light at 6:43 am, which is 50 seconds later than yesterday. Tonight will have 14 hours and 54 minutes of darkness, an increase of 45 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny, with a high of 34 degrees at 12pm. Three degrees below normal. Southwest wind 7 to 10 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 31 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1952. 4.3 inches of snow fell back in 1970.

While I’m not ready for winter, nor am I happy that Big Red is covered with salt, I will take it day by day. At least where I live I don’t have to drive to work. Winter is what it is. I totally sympathize with those who have left for warmer climates.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 33. Sunday, a chance of rain and snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 41. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Typical average high for the weekend is 36 degrees.

In four weeks on January 7 the sun will be setting at 4:39 pm, which is 17 minutes and 5 seconds later then tonight. In 2017 on that day, we had mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 21 and 11 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 31 and 15 degrees. The record high of 56 degrees was set back in 1915.

Looking ahead, Christmas Eve is in 2 weeks, New Years Eve is in 3 weeks, Coldest Day of Year (Avg. 14-30 degrees) is a month away, National Hug Day is in 6 weeks, Winnie the Pooh Day is in 10 weeks and April Fools Day and Easter is in 16 weeks.

I should probably get some sleep. Good night!

Lake Champlain in Evening

A picture of Lake Champlain in the evening looking across towards Vermont. It's very cold out and the lake looks very blue.

December 10, 2017 9 AM Update

Good morning! Happy Snow Covered Sunday. Two weeks to Christmas Eve. Winter is back! Bright and sunny with blue skies, white snows and 31 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a west breeze at 10 mph. Did you see we may get several more inches this week? Going to be warm enough today that some will inevitably melt, especially with the sun. But it will return. I guess winter isn’t quite over yet.

Today will be partly sunny, with a high of 36 degrees at 1pm. Two degrees below normal. West wind 9 to 14 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 29 degrees. The record high of 64 was set in 1966. 6.1 inches of snow fell back in 2014. We had about half that much snow last night. 3 inches I recon but not enough for the landlord to plow. I don’t think he even has the plow on his truck.

The sun will set at 4:22 pm with dusk around 4:53 pm, which is 4 seconds later than yesterday. At sunset, look for partly clear conditions and 34 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 6 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 46 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers after 3am. Mostly cloudy, with a low of 23 degrees at 6am. Typical for tonight. Maximum wind chill around 24 at 6pm; Southwest wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2016, we had partly cloudy skies. It got down to 13 degrees. The record low of -8 occurred back in 1988.

I’ve dug out Big Red, and will soon start it for the first time this week. I made sure everything was disconnected before I shut things down, so she should start right up. I forgotten how much snow there is to clean off of my big truck. I don’t mind snow but I usually prefer it to come earlier in the weeks so it melts off my truck.

Did some cleaning this morning, and now I’m off to park and ride to drop off paper for recycling then to to the store for groceries and supplies. Then in a little while I’ll head out to my parents house for Sunday dinner. I am feeling a quite a it better today, but I’m not ready for spending any extended periods out in the cold.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Christmas Eve when the sun will be setting at 4:27 pm with dusk at 4:59 pm. On that day in 2016, we had rain, drizzle, snow, sleet, mist, mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 42 and 35 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 72 back in 2015.

January 2017

Mostly dash cam videos of places I saw and explored during Januaryl 2017 as part of my year in review. While in Delmar during the month of January we didn't have a lot of snow, they had quite a bit of snow in the Adirondacks and some of the other places I explored this month.
