October 12, 2017 Night

Good evening! Clear and 51 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a southeast breeze at 5 mph. It’s a bit chilly sitting out back this evening, but so be it. Still a fairly nice evening, even though I probably should be doing so more cleaning and prepping for my week long trip that starts Saturday.

I have next week off for my trip to Pennsylvania, West Virigina, Shenandoah Valley, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. I may — depending on the weather and my mood go as far south as Tennessee. Or I might spend some time in Western New York towards the end of the trip. Depends how I feel. Tomorrow I will pack, laundryomat, and get some groceries. Plan to leave relatively early on Saturday morning, but not until at least after 9 AM when the bank opens. I will get the groceries I need for the first few days of the trip but plan to duck into Oneonta Walmart on Saturday or maybe the Keyser Walmart in West Virigina when I get there on Sunday. Or other grocery stores, but Walmart is great because they are one stop shopping. Saturday night I will overnight at the County Bridge Campground outside of Mansfield most likely, or maybe Asaph Run outside of Wellsboro, but the later is a bit out of the way for me.

Tonight will be clear, with a low of 38 degrees at 6am. Two degrees below normal. Southeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2016, we had mostly clear skies with more clouds in the early hours of the next day. It got down to 44 degrees. The record low of 24 occurred back in 1981.

Tonight will have a Waning Crescent Moon with 42% illuminated with the moon rising at 12:18 am. The moon will rise tomorrow at 1:00 am. The New Moon is next Thursday with mostly clear skies. The Beaver Moon is on Friday, November 3rd. The sun will rise at 7:06 am with the first light at 6:38 am, which is one minute and 10 seconds later than yesterday. Tonight will have 12 hours and 50 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 49 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny, with a high of 63 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 48 at 5pm. Light southeast wind becoming south 5 to 10 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 65 degrees. The record high of 81 was set in 1930. There was a dusting of snow in 1934.

Not a particularly nice weekend on tap. Saturday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 72. South wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Maximum dew point of 61 at 3pm. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 79. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 63 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 61 degrees.

In four weeks on November 9 the sun will be setting at 4:37 pm (Standard Time), which is one hour and 39 minutes earlier then tonight. In 2016 on that day, we had rain, drizzle, mist, cloudy skies and temperatures between 50 and 40 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 51 and 33 degrees. The record high of 71 degrees was set back in 1975.

Looking ahead, Thanksgiving is in 6 weeks.

I think I am feeling tired, so I will head in and retire for the night. Good night!

October 12, 2017 8 AM Update

As we head into the nine o’clock hour the sun is peaking out a bit. Going to be a nice mid October day once the sun comes out a bit more with the mercury around 65 degrees later. Hard to complain once the sun comes out in force and dries up the rain. Not much rain is expected for a while except maybe a passing shower on Sunday.

The sun will set at 6:16 pm with dusk around 6:45 pm, which is one minute and 39 seconds earlier than yesterday. At sunset, look for mostly clear conditions and 60 degrees. There will be a east breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 10 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 49 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be clear, with a low of 40 degrees at 8pm. Typical for tonight. Southeast wind 3 to 6 mph. In 2016, we had mostly clear skies with more clouds in the early hours of the next day. It got down to 44 degrees. The record low of 24 occurred back in 1981.

Looking ahead, there are 6 weeks until Thanksgiving when the sun will be setting at 4:26 pm with dusk at 4:57 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2016, we had mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 37 and 27 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 45 degrees. We hit a record high of 72 back in 1931. Back before my time but with the jet stream in the current position its possible that we could break that record. A few years ago we had a pretty warm Thanksgiving.

I’ve decided I’m going to try to get next week off from work. Then I will probably go down to West Virginia and Virginia. I want to see more of the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Parkway. I might also spend some time in Pennsylvania and maybe even Western New York. I don’t know. It all depends on the weather and what I feel like doing. I almost would rather spend more time at one location then packing up and traveling every day, especially with the nights as long as they are now.
