Good evening! Light drizzle and 59 degrees in Albany. There is a north breeze at 11 mph. The dew point is 48 degrees. No serious rain just a tad bit damp. Leaves are falling all around with the breeze and rain. The skies will clear tomorrow around 11 am.

Pretty long delayed on the 787 heading home this evening. Stop and go traffic, probably an accident up ahead. But I’m sure I’ll be home by six and I’m not driving so it really doesn’t matter. With the dark and wet weather it might actually be close to the to dark once I’m there.

The sun will set at 6:18 pm with dusk around 6:46 pm, which is one minute and 40 seconds earlier than yesterday. At sunset, look for rain showers and 58 degrees. The dew point will be 47 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 11 mph.

Tonight will have showers likely, mainly before 1am. Cloudy, with a low of 47 degrees at 6am. Six degrees above normal. North wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2016, we had mostly cloudy skies, clearing in the early hours of the next day. It got down to 47 degrees. The record low of 22 occurred back in 1964.

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon with 54% illuminated with the moon rising at 11:16 pm. The moon will set tomorrow at 2:19 pm. The Last Quarter Moon will be tomorrow. The Beaver Moon is on Friday, November 3rd. The sun will rise at 7:04 am with the first light at 6:36 am, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. Tonight will have 12 hours and 47 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high of 63 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal. East wind around 6 mph. A year ago, we had sunny skies with more clouds in the afternoon. The high last year was 67 degrees. The record high of 85 was set in 1954. There was a dusting of snow in 1904.

Awesome weekend on tap, with temperatures running 15 degrees above normal. Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 74. Maximum dew point of 61 at 3pm. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 79. Maximum dew point of 63 at 4pm. With that high pressure in control, it’s like the summer that never ends despite the leaves rapidly falling. Typical average high for the weekend is 61 degrees.

I am thinking about asking for next week off and doing a try two on my West Virginia trip. I think it would be a fun trip although I’m increasingly thinking about spending more time in Western New York over West Virginia and the Blue Ridge Parkway. I just kind of get tired of taking down and setting up camp every day. I also don’t really enjoy staying in developed campgrounds or so much driving. Maybe I’ll just find a place in the National Forest down there and stay multiple days. I’ll have to think about it more.

In four weeks on November 8 the sun will be setting at 4:38 pm (Standard Time), which is one hour, 39 minutes and 36 seconds earlier then today. In 2016 on that day, we had patches of fog, mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 59 and 26 degrees. That was the day after Election Day 2016, when people were shocked about the results of the presidential election. Typically, you have temperatures between 51 and 34 degrees. The record high of 75 degrees was set back in 1975.

Looking ahead, World Pasta Day is in 2 weeks, Coldest Day of Year (Avg. 14-30 degrees) is in 13 weeks and Inaugeration Day 2021 is in 171 weeks.

In Major Shift, Boy Scouts Says It Will Begin Allowing Girls To Join

"In a move that shakes up more than a century of tradition, the Boy Scouts of America announced Wednesday that starting next year, it will welcome girls into some Scouting programs.

"The BSA said in a statement on its site that girls can join its Cub Scouts program starting in 2018. It will be up to existing packs to decide whether they will remain all-boys, go co-ed or create all-girl divisions. Cub Scout dens, which are smaller units of six to eight kids within packs, will remain single-gender."

"As for older girls, the organization says it will announce a program next year that will enable them to earn the highest rank of Eagle Scout. It hopes to have the program in place in 2019."

October Snowfall Records

While this October has been quite warm, snow is always a possibility in October in Albany. That said, snow in October is usually quite light, with the norm being more of an occasional dusting in the morning rather then any serious accumulation. Back in 1987 with the freak early autumn storm, we got 6.5 inches of snow at the Albany International Airport with some outlaying areas getting as much as two feet. Even last year, we got 1.7 inches of snow in Albany on October 27th. Measurable snowfall is more common during the end of the month, although still quite rare.

Map: Terry Mountain State Forest

Map: Terry Mountain State Forest

Terry Mountain consists of two State Forest Areas, Clinton 3 and 4. This area contains Mud Pond, Military Pond and a main access road called the Red Road. The Mud Pond Road (Patent Road or Military Pond Road on old maps) which accesses portions of the area is no longer maintained by the Town. When the Town stopped maintaining the road, one family gated the road since they were maintaining it to access their property. This Road is also the public access for Mud Pond and Military Pond. A new multi‐use trail for snowmobiling and silvicultural activities called the Cliff Trail will be built to connect Military and Mud Pond with the Red Road. A second multi‐use trail for snowmobiling and silvicultural activities has been laid out and will be built to connect the Cliff Trail and Red Road with the Tower Road. This new trail will be called the Summit Trail. For the use of the facilities on this state forest to be maximized by the public, the Mastic gate must be removed, since it blocks the only legal access to one side of the trails. The Military Pond Road would provide a Snowmobile trail from Fern Lake to Peru utilizing a section of Terry Mountain State Forest from Military Pond past Mud Pond to the Red Road where it intersects with the town’s Manix Road. Sections of trail along the Red Road will be
included as small ski and bike loops.
