August 23, 2017 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 63 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a west-northwest breeze at 8 mph. The dew point is 57 degrees. Not a bad evening for getting unpacked, I got home at dusk around 8 pm.

Today was a nice day hiking along the Finger Lakes Trail and swimming at the Watkins Glen Pool. The hot apple pie sundae at the Glen Dairy Bar was great. It was nice being not all the way out in Western Pennsylvania today, so the drive home was much more reasonable.

Not a terrible drive home but traffic was bad in Binghamton due to a rush hour crash. I ended up taking some various back roads through Tioga County to the Southern Tier expressway which my GPS said would be a better route than that awful NY 79 through Ithaca. The country around Cayuta and Alpine is quite pretty for sure.

Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low of 53 degrees at 5am. Six degrees below normal. Maximum dew point of 57 at 9pm. West wind 3 to 8 mph. In 2016, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 57 degrees. The record low of 42 occurred back in 1971.

Tonight had a Waxing Crescent Moon with roughly 14% illuminated. It has set. The First Quarter Moon is on Monday night. The Harvest Moon is on Tuesday, September 5th. The sun will rise at 6:11 am with the first light at 5:42 am, which is one minute and 5 seconds later than yesterday. Tonight will have 10 hours and 29 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 41 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny, with a high of 74 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees below normal. Maximum dew point of 55 at 8am. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 85 degrees. The record high of 95 was set in 1947.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. Saturday, sunny, with a high near 74. Maximum dew point of 51 at 5pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 74. Maximum dew point of 52 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 79 degrees.

Maybe I’ll go to the Adirondacks this weekend. I’ll have to think about it more tomorrow. Summer is rapidly coming to an end.

In four weeks on September 20 the sun will be setting at 6:55 pm, which is 48 minutes and 30 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2016 on that day, we had fog, patches of fog, mist, partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 84 and 59 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 71 and 50 degrees. The record high of 90 degrees was set back in 1946.

Looking ahead, Harvest Moon is in 2 weeks, 6:30 PM Sunset is in 6 weeks, Thanksgiving is in 3 months, Coldest Day of Year (Avg. 14-30 degrees) is in 20 weeks and Inaugeration Day 2021 is in 178 weeks.
