Letchworth State Park The Flood of ’72

As we look back at Hurricane Agnes, which occurred 45 years ago this week, take a look at these amazing photos of Letchworth State Park. There was so much water coming over Lower Falls, that the were invisible under the torrent of water. Water reached the top of the Mount Morris Dam, before it was released in a measured fashion to avoid logs from jamming up the river downstream.

Supreme Court sides with The Slants, rules ban on offensive names is unconstitutional

Supreme Court sides with The Slants, rules ban on offensive names is unconstitutional

"The Supreme Court ruled Monday that a federal trademark law banning offensive names is unconstitutional, siding with a rock band whose name had been deemed racially disparaging by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office."

"In an 8-0 ruling, the court determined the lawโ€™s so-called โ€œdisparagement clauseโ€ violates the free speech clause of the First Amendment."

"The case centered on Oregon-based, Asian-American band The Slants, which was denied a trademark because its name was considered offensive. The band countered that the 70-year-old law at issue violates free-speech rights -- and Justice Samuel Alito, in the courtโ€™s opinion, agreed."

โ€œThe commercial market is well stocked with merchandise that disparages prominent figures and groups, and the line between commercial and non-commercial speech is not always clear, as this case illustrates. If affixing the commercial label permits the suppression of any speech that may lead to political or social โ€˜volatility,โ€™ free speech would be endangered,โ€ he wrote."

Memo Shows Watergate Prosecutors Had Evidence Nixon White House Plotted Violence

NBC News Exclusive: Memo Shows Watergate Prosecutors Had Evidence Nixon White House Plotted Violence

It states that โ€œan extensive investigationโ€ found evidence that Nixon operatives plotted an โ€œassault on antiwar demonstratorsโ€ at a rally at the U.S. Capitol featuring Ellsberg and other anti-war "notables.โ€ The anti-war demonstration occurred near a viewing of recently deceased FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. An accompanying memo by Akerman summarizes his interview with Stone, who said he helped organize young Republicans to join the counter-demonstration but who had no apparent knowledge of the White House plot on Ellsberg.

The attack would be on "long-haired demonstrators, in particular Ellsberg,โ€ the prosecutors' memo states, with the objectives of impugning Ellsberg for protesting near to Hoover lying in state and "simply having Ellsberg beaten up.โ€
