Why Are Car Thermometers So Inaccurate?

"Unfortunately, your car's thermistor is also not very helpful in the winter. Because it isn't accurate to always distinguish between above and below freezing, it can't help you figure out if the road may be coated with black ice. With all these limitations, car thermometers are a fun toy, but not very useful if you actually are looking to find out the temperature. You're better off checking the weather on your phone. As long as you're not currently driving, anyway."

June 18, 2017 Morning

Good morning! Happy Father’s Day. People have accused me to being a mother but never a father. Go figure. Some sun peaking out and 81 degrees in Delmar. There is a south breeze at 9 mph. Still very sticky out. The dew point is 70 degrees. More sun later – just like yesterday – skies will clear around 3 pm.

Once I get finished cleaning and showering, I’m heading out to the Gas Up and then out to my parents house for Father’s Day. It should be a nice day but it sure will be a hot one. Well, I’ll bring a lot of water and the air conditioning works well on my truck.

Today will have isolated showers before 9am, then isolated showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high of 84 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees above normal. Very humid today. Maximum dew point of 72 at 2pm. South wind 9 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies and a high of 86 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1957.

The sun will set at 8:35 pm with dusk around 9:10 pm, which is 18 seconds later than yesterday. At sunset, look for partly cloudy conditions and 81 degrees. The dew point will be 71 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 14 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, an increase of 9 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low of 73 degrees at 4am. 15 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 72 at 6pm. South wind 11 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2016, it got down to 59 degrees with mostly cloudy skies. The record low of 38 occurred back in 1950.

On this day in 1971, President Richard Nixon declares that illegal drugs are “public enemy number one”, which becomes popularized as the “War on Drugs”. Also in 1983, Astronaut Sally Ride becomes the first American woman in space.

Looking ahead, there are 3 weeks until Buck Moon when the sun will be setting at 8:33 pm with dusk at 9:07 pm. At that point, the days will be getting shorter. On that day in 2016, we had thunderstorm, thunderstorm rain, rain, drizzle, mist, cloudy skies and temperatures between 68 and 64 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 103 back in 1936.
