May 24, 2017 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 66 degrees in Delmar. There is a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. The dew point is 50 degrees. Not a half bad evening. Bought food and supplies for the weekend camping trip, gased up the truck so I’m ready.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 54 degrees at 4am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 50 at 10pm. South wind around 6 mph. In 2016, it got down to 51 degrees with rain and shallow fog and patches of fog and mist and partly cloudy skies. The record low of 30 occurred back in 1956.

Waning Crescent Moon tonight with 4% illuminated. The moon will rise around 4:14 am. The New Moon will be tomorrow with showers expected. The Full β€œStrawberry” Moon is on Friday, June 9th. Local strawberries are good. The sun will rise at 5:23 am with the first light at 4:50 am, which is 43 seconds earlier than yesterday. Tonight will have 9 hours and 2 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 38 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will rain, mainly after 11am. Otherwise cloudy, with a high of 64 degrees at 3pm. Eight degrees below normal. Maximum dew point of 52 at 3pm. East wind 7 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had rain, shallow fog, patches of fog, mist, partly cloudy skies and a high of 88 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 1981.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. Saturday, patchy fog before 8am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 75. Maximum dew point of 54 at 8pm. That’s going to be a very nice day. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 74. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 56 at 11am. Typical average high for the weekend is 73 degrees.

In four weeks on June 21 the sun will be setting at 8:36 pm, which is 16 minutes and 31 seconds later then tonight. In 2016 on that day, we had thunderstorm, rain, mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 80 and 56 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 79 and 58 degrees. The record high of 97 degrees was set back in 1938.

Looking ahead, Flag Day is in 3 weeks, Summer is in 4 weeks, Latest Sunset of Year (8:37 PM) is in 1 months, Last Day with Average High of 80 is in 13 weeks, State Fair Opens is in 3 months, Harvest Moon is in 15 weeks, 6:30 PM Sunset is in 19 weeks, Coldest Day of Year (Avg. 14-30 degrees) is in 33 weeks and Inaugeration Day 2021 is in 191 weeks.

A Rant About Mass Motoring

The Albany Pine Bush Preserve would be so much nicer if there wasn't the constant roar of passing automobiles and trucks.

May 24, 2017 9 AM Update

On this Wednesday before the long Memorial Day Weekend we are at 58 degrees on our way up to 75 degrees with more sun later. It should be not half bad Hump Day. Assuming that I get out of work at a reasonable hour, I plan to gas up my truck and buy food and supplies for the camping trip. Maybe get the kayak racks put on.

The sun will set at 8:20 pm with dusk around 8:53 pm, which is 56 seconds later than yesterday. At sunset, look for partly cloudy conditions and 68 degrees. The dew point will be 53 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 56 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 39 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low of 53 degrees at 5am. Three degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 53 at 6pm. South wind around 5 mph. In 2016, it got down to 51 degrees with rain and shallow fog and patches of fog and mist and partly cloudy skies. The record low of 30 occurred back in 1956.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Flag Day when the sun will be setting at 8:34 pm with dusk at 9:09 pm. On that day in 2016, we had mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 77 and 47 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 78 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1892.

Liberals may bemoan the president’s budget but I think it’s a fresh breath, a new idea, a reinvention of government. Maybe it’s time to consider the work that agencies do; there is a lot of bloat in government. I just wish there was bigger cuts to defense, military, homeland security, and police. There is so much bloat in the institutions that primarily exist to protect the state. I would be sad if a friend or love one died from terrorism or crime but those risks are so infinitely small, that I would rather see most of those funds used to pay down the deficit. Maybe if I lived in crime ridden city, I would feel different. But I live in the suburbs.

I saw that Moose River Plains roads are open for the season but only the major roads west of Lost Ponds. I’m not surprised, things are pretty soft up there after the relatively wet May. At least the fire risk is low. I’m thinking about Independence Weekend for the Plains. By then the black flies will be gone.

The forest service roads are much better maintained in Vermont and should be in good condition. They have a lot more gravel so they tend not to get as muddy. Saturday should be quite nice, I’m thinking about hiking back to Stratton Lake and then just hanging out on Sunday or maybe paddling in Grout Pond. That beach at Grout Pond is nice but I think it will be too cold for swimming. I am thinking I will pack the heater, even if I don’t end up using it much in case it’s cold in the mornings and warm my hands. I don’t expect the mercury in Vermont to get much above 65 or maybe 70 when I’m there and during cloudy and wet periods that can be rather cold.

I’m almost to work. Have a great day!Β

A Boreal Wonderland along the Roosevelt Truck Trail

A Boreal Wonderland along the Roosevelt Truck Trail

"The Roosevelt Truck Trail in Minerva is one of the most beautiful trails in the Adirondack Park. The road-sized path takes hikers through a lovely, mature boreal forest of spruce and balsam fir trees on a carpet of sphagnum moss. The 2.5 mile long trail has become a favorite hike during the annual Adirondack Birding Festival. Summer and winter field trips, co-sponsored by the Long Lake Parks and Recreation Department and Northern New York Audubon, are now regularly offered."

May 24, 2017 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. Make it great! Three weeks to Flag Day. Mostly cloudy and 56 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 51 degrees. The skies will clear around 1 pm.

Today will be partly sunny, with a high of 75 degrees at 4pm. Three degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 53 at 11am. Light and variable wind becoming southeast around 5 mph in the afternoon. The TRUMP would approve. A year ago, we had rain, shallow fog, cloudy skies and a high of 67 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1964.
