March 14, 2017 Morning

Good morning! Happy Blizzard of 2017. Light snow and 22 degrees in Delmar.  There is a northeast breeze at 6 mph. Snow day for me, my office closed this morning. Which is good as a blizzard is heading my way.

Right now the buses are running and the roads are plowed but it seems likely that by afternoon a travel ban will be in effect and bus service will cease. Big Red is parked on the side of the house so once the snow stops and my driveway is plowed (which won’t happen until probably tomorrow at the earliest), I move my truck to my usual plowed spot. Where I am parked does not get plowed in, so I’ll just mostly have to remove the snow from the top of my truck come the weekend.

Today will have blizzard conditions, especially as we head into the afternoon.  High near 26. Blustery, with a north wind 10 to 15 mph increasing to 18 to 23 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 36 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 14 to 20 inches possible.

A year ago, we had rain and a high of 47 degrees. The record high of 75 was set in 1946. 12.9 inches of snow fell back in 1958.

The sun will rise at 7:08 am. The sun will set at 7:01 pm with dusk around 7:29 pm, which is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. Tomorrow will have 11 hours and 57 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over today.

My office is closed today, which is good because I think I could have gotten to work today but I highly doubt I could have gotten a back home after the blizzard ramped on up. I was ready to go to work, and packed my suitcase with a change of clothes, blanket, food and flashlight in preparation for a miserable commute but it looks like I won’t need it. I don’t have my laptop at home  but I can use my old laptop in the meantime. I don’t have Internet at home so it’s not a big deal. I could go skiing but not in the blizzard. I’ll stay home and pray that I don’t lose power or heat.

Tonight. Snow, mainly before 5am. The snow could be heavy at times. Areas of blowing snow. Low around 17. Blustery, with a northwest wind 14 to 24 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.
Tomorrow. A chance of snow before 8am, then a chance of snow showers after 8am. Cloudy, with a high near 27. Blustery, with a northwest wind 13 to 22 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Today in 1900, the Gold Standard Act is ratified, placing United States currency on the gold standard. That would last until the Great Depression and completely end by the 1970s with the demise of the pegged currencies.

While today is a blizzard, next Tuesday is Calendar Spring when the sun will be setting at 7:09 pm with dusk at 7:37 pm. On that day in 2016, we had snow and temperatures between 46 and 32 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 46 degrees. We hit a record high of 78 back in 1921.
