Map: Pochuck Mountain State Forest

Pochuck State Forest (Orange #5) encompasses 503 acres of land and is located in the hamlet of Pine Island near the town of Warwick in Orange County. It is a popular area for recreational activities such as hunting, hiking, camping, and horseback riding.

Pochuck State Forest is undeveloped and has no formally marked trails. As such, this forest offers unique opportunities to those who wish to explore on their own. There are, however, former logging trails, skid trails, and Public Forest Access Roads which provide informal recreational access on the property. At this time, plans are being discussed to create additional formal trail networks.

Men and the Manufacturing Decline

"In many small towns across the country, there aren’t very many good jobs these days. Once there were factories that employed millions and paid decent wages. Today, young men are scraping by working at local bars or in lower-paid temp jobs. Many of these men are single, and new research suggests that those two things—their poor economic status and their singleness—are not unrelated."

"It’s no wonder, then, that the changes wrought by the disappearance of manufacturing jobs helped elevate the platform of Donald Trump, who won 67 percent of white workers without a college degree. Their malcontent comes not just from their economic struggles, but from the dramatic changes to their personal lives that the decline of manufacturing have created."

March 4, 2017 Weather Forecast

This interactive graph shows the hourly weather forecast for the next seven days. The bars represent the temperature, the pink line reprsents the dew point and the white line represents the dewpoint. Red dots are climate normals for the day. Orange dots are record temperatures. Green dots are last year's temperatures.

Yellow bars represent generally sunny conditions. The more gray the bar is, the more clouds expected. Blue bars represent a greater then 50% chance of rain. Purple bars represent a greater then 50% chance of snow. Orange bars represent a greater then 50% chance of thunderstorms. Red bars represent warm and muggy weather, under generally clear skies.

Departure from Normal Low to Record Low

From Mid-November to Mid-March, there can be nights that get extremely cold -- with records as low as 43 degrees below the normal low for the night. In practical terms, this means we can have temperatures that reach 20 below, but that's rather unusual, especially nowadays. Exceptionally cold weather just doesn't happen as often today as it did in years past -- and when it does happen -- it's typically during the winter months.

Google Maps: 2015 Per Capita Gross Domestic Product

The 2015 GDP per capita is gross domestic product divided by midyear population. GDP is the sum of gross value added by all resident producers in the economy plus any product taxes and minus any subsidies not included in the value of the products. It is calculated without making deductions for depreciation of fabricated assets or for depletion and degradation of natural resources. Map: Cold Creek And Lost Nation State Forest

Map: Cold Creek And Lost Nation State Forest

Lost Nation State Forest covers a total of 1,344 acres. The forest is named after the fabled "Lost Nation," a resident tribe of Native Americans who unexpectedly disappeared from the area without a trace. There are no designated trails but hiking is allowed throughout the property.

In the 1930's, the Lost Nation Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp, S-126, was located on this State Forest along Lost Nation Road. Other than a small concrete building foundation, an artesian well and the Norway spruce trees lining the road, little evidence of the camp remains. One of the camp buildings still exists, having been moved to private property on Vosburg Cross Road and known locally as "Sam's Dance Hall."

The 501-acre Cold Creek State Forest is located in the on the Wyoming-Allegany County line. There are no trails on the unit but hiking is allowed on forest roads and throughout the property.

The Centerville area was settled shortly after 1800. Early residents were attracted by the high-quality timber growing there. Ironically, most of this high-quality timberland was eventually cleared for agriculture, but by the early 1900's much of the worn-out farmland was being abandoned and was reverting once again to forest.

Good morning! Average High for Today is 40. Early April Fools joke? Four weeks to April Fools Day. Mostly sunny and 11 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 11 mph. The current wind chill is -3. So dang cold, especially after having a 74 degree day a week ago.

Today will be mostly sunny, with a high of 24 degrees at 2pm. 16 degrees below normal. Wind chill values as low as -3. Blustery, with a northwest wind 11 to 16 mph increasing to 19 to 24 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 37 mph. No outside activities planned for today besides walking down to the library. A year ago, we had snow and a high of 38 degrees. The record high of 59 was set in 1919. 8.3 inches of snow fell back in 1971.

The only good news I have for you is next Saturday will be the last day of Regular Time with a week from Sunday starting Daylight Savings Time. Next weekend may have a significant snow storm, but we have to watch it carefully. It might also be too warm and just rain or it might push off the coast. A lot can change in a week with the weather. Only 15 days and 14 hours until calendar spring. You might in other words say a bit over two weeks. It’s a Monday the first day of spring.

The sun will set at 5:49 pm with dusk around 6:17 pm, which is 1 minutes and 13 seconds later than yesterday. Today will have 11 hours and 25 minutes of daylight, an increase of 2 minutes and 53 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be clear, with a low of 4 degrees at 5am. 18 degrees below normal. Wind chill values as low as -10. Northwest wind 9 to 16 mph. Thanks Trump. In 2016, it got down to 17 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. The record low of -12 occurred back in 1948.

Today in 1985, Food and Drug Administration approves a blood test for AIDS infection, used since then for screening all blood donations in the United States. So your blood transfusion won’t likely give you AIDS. In 1917, Jeannette Rankin of Montana becomes the first female member of the United States House of Representatives. Unfortunately for all Americans, a woman didn’t become president in 2017, so we’re stuck with Donald John Trump for four years. And in 1957, S&P 500 stock market index is introduced, replacing the S&P 90. It better keep going up so I make a lot of money and can eventually move out of the state, have no neighbors so I can burn my trash and shoot my guns whenever I want – and even get a bigger jacked up truck. Haha. I hear Montana is nice.

I got to do some more cleaning around the house and I will do some reading and working on the blog. I most likely will go to the grocery store store later and maybe see if car wash place is open. Or maybe that’s a Sunday thing when it ain’t so freaking cold. Thinking about hiking Wolf Hill on Sunday, but if I have to go to Greenville to wash my truck, I might go for a walk at the town park out there.

Gave it more thought and I decided to mount the low voltage disconnect under the rear seat next to the inverter and run the truck cap power from a wire
No reason to put the voltage disconnect under the hood. This means less wire runned all together and then I can move the truck cap power in to the front of the bed and mount the various gang switches and dimmer on the shelf. I will probably run 4 gauge wire back to the cap from the inverter to ensure my growing needs for 12 volt power is met. I could envision using a 12 volt fan and the pizzo electric cooler more now that I have the battery protector.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until April Fools Day when the sun will be setting at 7:22 pm with dusk at 7:50 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2016, we had rain and temperatures between 70 and 42 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 52 degrees. We hit a record high of 77 back in 1986. I’m tired of cold, snowy winter. That date better come sooner than later. I do need to renew my fishing license. Trout season starts on a Saturday this year. Yummy trout. Hit up the Catskill Creek opening day, maybe?

Back in the 1950s, local expressways in their planning stages were always known by their nicknames — the proposed Riverfront Route (Interstate 787), Northside Route (Interstate 90), and Crosstown Arterial (NY 85).

Some names have remained — like Alternate Route 7, the Thruway, and the Adirondack Northway but those are the exceptions rather then the rule. I think we should go back to calling the local roads the Riverfront Route, the Northside Route, and the Crosstown Arterial.
