NOAA Releases Spectacular First Images From New GOES-16 Satellite

The spectacular first images from NOAA's powerful new GOES-16 satellite were released Monday, providing the most vivid look yet at our hemisphere from a geostationary weather satellite.

GOES-16 first made headlines when it launched Nov. 19, 2016, under the name GOES-R, and was renamed after reaching orbit. NOAA is describing the new imagery that it's sending out as "high-definition from the heavens".

APA seeks comment on Moose River Plains amendment

APA seeks comment on Moose River Plains amendment

Among other things, the amendment would incorporate proposals identified by the International Mountain Bike Association as part of a comprehensive mountain bike trail plan prepared for the Department of Environmental Conservation. Specifically, it would expand opportunities for single-track riding in the Moose River Plains area; concentrate bicycling to specific areas and monitor the level of use; expand bicycling adjacent to highly visited areas such as DEC’s Eighth Lake Campground and Great Camp Sagamore; and connect the trail system to nearby towns and communities.

It would also provide additional recreational opportunities for persons with disabilities. Specifically, the plan calls for modifying the Eighth Lake Canoe Carry/Mike Norris Trail and the Eighth Lake lean-to and related facilities for persons with disabilities. The state would also construct a universal access trail and picnic area east of the new Route 28 parking area.

January 24, 2017 9 AM Update

At this point around the nine o’clock hour the roads are mostly just wet with some sloppy parts. 33 degrees in Albany so the salt is doing its job. Bus driver said the roads were much worse before eight this morning. I believe him based on the view out my window. More slush on the secondaries but they are definitely passable with due care.

Sleet will turn to rain and lighten up later on then turn back to snow and ice later on. Maybe temperatures will reach 35 by mid day before sagging back to 29 degrees by sunrise tomorrow. Β The sun will set at 4:59 pm with dusk around 5:29 pm, which is 1 minutes and 17 seconds later than yesterday. Today will have 9 hours and 43 minutes of daylight, an increase of 1 minutes and 6 seconds over yesterday. More sun for a brief period tomorrow morning with temperatures reaching 40 tomorrow. Should help melt away some of the slop.

Wet and soggy this morning, butΒ besides needing to wear my hunting boots to workΒ to keep my suit pants and shoes from getting soggy, I didn’t think much of the sleet and slush. Maybe 2-3 inches. Not a terrible weather forecast, especially compared to some storms I can remember in years past, where the buses had trouble climbing the hills and getting stuck everywhere. Today was more slop tonight.

Bus was running on time or maybe a minute early but I caught it just on time. Yeah, I was running late like usual. I build extra time into my schedule, but I spent some of it reset the programming on the Digital TV box to make sure the PBS Newshour records tonight. I was annoyed when I got home last night and the Newshour wasn’t recording. Not sure how it got deleted from the program box.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Valentines Day when the sun will be setting at 5:27 pm with dusk at 5:55 pm. On that day in 2016, we had sunny skies and temperatures between 8 and -13 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 34 degrees. We hit a record high of 63 back in 1946.

January 24, 2017 Morning

Good icy morning! Happy Tuesday. Three weeks to Valentines Day. Sleet (ice pellets) and 33 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a north-northeast breeze at 11 mph. There is about 2 inches of ice pellets accumulated along the ground. It looks like traffic is moving, a bit cautiously because the roads may still be a bit slick in spots.

Today look for continued rain, freezing rain, and sleet before noon, then rain and sleet between noon and 1pm, then rain after 1pm. High of 33 degrees at 9am. Two degrees above normal. North wind 9 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. Total daytime sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies and a high of 29 degrees. The record high of 54 was set in 1999. 7.6 inches of snow fell back in 1948.

Tonight will continue to rain, snow, and sleet before 11pm, then a chance of snow between 11pm and 4am. Cloudy, with a low of 29 degrees at 5am. 15 degrees above normal. Northwest wind 8 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than one inch possible. In 2016, it got down to 18 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. The record low of -12 occurred back in 1963.
