November 29, 2016 Morning

Good morning! Happy Square Dance Day.Β Left, left, back, right, do it again again. Dark morning, now with rain on and off, with temperatures around 45 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south-southeast breeze at 14 mph. Rain tomorrow. The skies will clear Thursday around noontime and it looks like a nice weekend on tap, at least for early December.

Rain is expected today.Β High of 53 degrees at 1pm. Fairly warm for late November, 11 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 48 at 2pm. South wind 10 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly cloudy skies and a high of 41 degrees. Pretty much like today but maybe slightly less wet. The record high of 66 was set in 2005. 3.3 inches of snow fell back in 1945.

The sun will set at 4:23 pm with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 22 seconds earlier than yesterday. Today will have 9 hours and 18 minutes of daylight, a decrease of 1 minutes and 27 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of rain before 7pm, then a chance of showers between 7pm and 10pm. Patchy fog. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low of 42 degrees at 5am. A mild evening,Β 15 degrees above normal. Southeast wind around 6 mph becoming calm after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2015, it got down to 22 degrees under partly clear skies. The record low of -10 occurred back in 1875. A few years before my time.

There are 2 months until My 34th Birthday when the sun will be setting at 5:06 pm with dusk at 5:36 pm. The average high temperature is 32 degrees, with a record high of 61 in 1895. Winter is cold. I guess I should look forward to getting a year old, but it sure is a cold time of the year. But I’m sure I’ll still get out camping once or twice in January.

Went down to the library and then for the evening. I have my PostGIS database almost back up and running although for some reason when I imported it didn’t create a GIST index against the geography. So it’s running slowly. I think I may have forgotten to install hstore first which is part of the problem. So I’m going to rebuild that table. I updated the wetlands maps for several counties that relatively recently updated their maps. I fixed waterbodies so no longer are the they divided by counties, with ugly side-effects in maps for bodies of water that cross multiple counties.

I think I walked around 8 miles yesterday.Β Which was good, because with this dark morning and the threat of rain, I did not take the express bus, but instead to the local to work. So I didn’t get my mile walk down to the bus. I still will walk during lunch, so that will give me 2-3 miles plus if I walk down to the library and back that’s 1.2 miles. Throw in the evening walk, and I’ll be over five. It all depends on if the weather holds off.

November 28, 2016 Evening

Good evening! Mostly clear and 37 degrees in Albany. Calm wind. I am way over dressed for the weather, indeed I went out for my lunch time walk and didn’t bother with a coat.

Tonight will have a chance of rain, mostly after 5am. Increasing clouds, with a low of 35 degrees at 10pm. Six degrees above normal. Light southeast wind becoming south 6 to 11 mph in the evening. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2015, it got down to 28 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. The record low of 3 occurred back in 1875.

The New Moon is tonight. The Full β€œCold” Moon is on Wednesday, December 14th.

Tomorrow will rain on and off, mainly before 4pm. High of 48 degrees at 1pm. Eight degrees above normal. Southeast wind 9 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly cloudy skies and a high of 41 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 2005. 3.3 inches of snow fell back in 1945.

It looks like we have a nice weekend coming up with seasonable temperatures. Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 42. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 41.Typical average high for the weekend is 41 degrees. I hope that forecast remains true, I might go up to the Adirondacks. We will see.

It was a pretty good Monday. Not the most exciting day ever but it is a work day after all. I wish we had more daylight in the evening but that’s not to be.

In four weeks on December 26 the sun will be setting at 4:28 pm, which is 4 minutes later then tonight. In 2015 on that day, we had mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 49 and 34 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 33 and 18 degrees. The record high of 59 degrees was set back in 1895.

It was nice walking at lunch time around the Empire State Plaza. As I previously noted with the sweater vest on no coat was required. Lots of blue sky and the big stairs to what once was the terrace garden at the State Museum was open. Beats walking in the Concourse, which at least isn’t so dark now that they have turned all of the lights back on there.

While my headphones are starting to crap out, I decided against going out tonight. Big Red needs a few days to rest. Granted, I do need to get to Sears some time this week to get more Oxford shirts.

Noting that Martin Luther King Day is a week away, it is followed by Inauguration Day a week later. I’m really interested to hear what President-elect Donald Trump has planned for our country. I know my conservative friends are very enthusiastic about his election – and liberal friends are horrified. To me, Donald Trump remains kind of a mystery. Liberals tell me that the mystery is all bad but I don’t know. We could use some changes, and not all conservative ideas are bad.

November 28, 2016 8 AM Update

Good morning! Definitely a frosty morning but that sun is pushing the mercury up quickly. Mostly sunny and 30 degrees in Delmar. Calm wind. Based on the mushroom cloud coming out of the natural gas power plant downtown, I would say there is a bit of a temperature inversion over the valley. A bit of a southerly breeze in the higher elevations of the atmosphere. The sun angle is getting low based on the shadows cast by the Empire State Plaza.

That sun was really in my eyes walking down to the Park and Ride, although it at least was warm. I avoided the Jehovah Witness folks that had set up a literature at my bus stop at the Park and Ride. It looked like one of Delmar’s good liberals was keeping them occupied. I can only imagine what was being said. Β I’m sure they were friendly.

This past weekend, I’ve onlyΒ been walking an average of 3.5 miles per day.Β Which I will probably double now that the weekdays are back and I can walk during lunch at work. I’ll also most likely walk down to the library this evening and do my evening walk, so I should haveΒ closer to 7 miles under my bootΒ by the end of the day. I’m trying to walk a lot every day because I know it’s so healthy, and it will help from having further ankle problems going forward.

Looks like we have a very nice day on tap.Β For most of the day it should be quiteΒ sunny, reachingΒ a high of 45 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal. Light and variable wind becoming southeast around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had rain and a high of 58 degrees. The record high of 68 was set in 1990. 6 inches of snow fell back in 1985.

The sun will set at 4:23 pm with dusk around 4:55 pm, which is 25 seconds earlier than yesterday. Today will have 9 hours and 19 minutes of daylight, a decrease of 1 minute and 32 seconds over yesterday.Β We still have another minute and 49 seconds to loose the evenings,Β before the sun starts setting later, come December 9th. The first sunset after 5 PM is on January 25th.

Tonight will be cloudy, with rain late, mainly after 5am.Β Looking at aΒ low of 35 degrees at 2am. Seven degrees above normal. Southeast wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. In 2015, it got down to 28 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. The record low of 3 occurred back in 1875.

Traffic is backed up a little bit heading into the Empire State Plaza. Not sure why but sometimes there are special events on our weekdays. It gives me a little more time to work on the blog.

Looking ahead to 2017, there are 7 weeks until Martin Luther King Day when the sun will be setting at 4:49 pm with dusk at 5:20 pm. On that day in 2016, we had rain, snow and temperatures between 40 and 29 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 30 degrees. We hit a record high of 62 back in 1995. The weather is cold in January.

Waffles stacked with blueberries and sausage for breakfast this morning.Β An easy and good breakfast while I got ready. While I was up so early last week, over the past long weekend, I’ve kind of fallen back into the habit of sleeping in and staying up late. Well, I did make the express bus.

Enjoy your day. The weather will beautiful today but the rain and clouds will come in. Lots of sun for Thursday and Friday.
