June 13, 2016 11 PM Update

Good evening! Currently mostly cloudy and 58 degrees in Delmar. There is a northwest breeze at 13 mph.

Slight chance of showers then mostly clear and cool tonight. We will have a slight chance of showers before midnight. Look for a low around 49. Northwest wind 7 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. The normal low for tonight is 56, so it will be about seven degrees below normal. The record low of 39 occured back in 1970.

Tonight we have a Waxing Gibbous Moon with 60% illuminated. The moon will rise around 1:24 pm and will set around 2:49 am. June’s Strawberry Moon is next Monday.

Tomorrow the sun will rise at 5:16 am with the first light at 4:41 am, which is 1 seconds later then today.

Sunny but otherwise nearly seasonably warm for Tuesday. We will have ahigh near 76. Northwest wind 7 to 13 mph. The normal high for Tuesday is 78, so it will be about normal for this time of year. The record high of 96 happened back in 1892.

I was reading in William Kennedy’s O Albany that Academy Park in Downtown Albany was one of the city’s first landfills. At one level, that’s not too surprising. I wonder how many people know that story. Then again most cities are built on garbage and rubble of earlier generation.

I have to look with disdain and disgust with what is happening in our country. I was watching the Orlando protest and I didn’t see a single American flag. Our country is under attack by Islamic terrorists, and protesters of the terrorist attack couldn’t bothered to show some pride to be America. Our first amendment protects the right of obnoxious places to exist, like night clubs that celebrate sexuality. I’ve long supported gay marriage, and the right of committed individuals to form the ultimate bond, but pernicious sexuality is just offensive. All thanks to values that many men have lost their lives to defend.

I’m not sure what the solution is but I don’t think gun control or even locking up lots of innocent people is the answer. Folks have rights, including the right to keep and bear arms. One solution may be increased insurance, so that if one loses a loved one, at least they won’t be in financial ruin. Freedom isn’t free. People need to be able to hunt and fish, protect their families and use our natural resources responsibly.

I started getting into the habit of responding to idiotic political Facebook posts. I know that’s not the answer. People will believe stupid political stuff. It’s better to just hide stuff you disagree with and avoid all the political silliness. I may be one of the last undecided voters in 2016. I like a lot of the social policies of the buffoon but not so much his economic ideas or his insane foreign policy.

Added speed limit information to Waze on many streets locally this evening. Trying to improve my rank, so I can update major rural arterials I drive on with correct speed limits. The Waze speedometer and speeding reminder feature, is so helpful. I can’t wait until it’s enabled and mostly accurate on all the local streets. It will make driving much easier and safer with speed reminders being the norm.

Looking ahead, First Day of Summer is in 1 week, Independence Day is in 3 weeks, First Day of August is in 7 weeks, Labor Day is in 12 weeks, Columbus Day is in 17 weeks and Halloween is in 20 weeks.

I hope you had a good day. Sleep well.

On this day in 1966, the United States Supreme Court rules in Miranda v. Arizona that the police must inform suspects of their rights before questioning them. Also in 1970, “The Long and Winding Road” becomes The Beatles’ last U.S. number one song. And in 1977, Convicted Martin Luther King Jr. assassin James Earl Ray is recaptured after escaping from prison three days before.

There are 1 weeks until the First Day of Summer when the sun will be setting at 8:36 pm with dusk at 9:11 pm. The average high temperature is 79 degrees, with a record high of 97 in 1953. We are almost there this year.

I wish we had better weather this past weekend, but so be it. There is still a lot of summer left to enjoy. I’m sure that there will be 90 degree, sunny weekends left to enjoy at the Potholers and state park pools. Next week most of state parks open for swimming.

I’m looking at heading up to Moose River Plains for Independence Day Weekend. Probably leave Thursday night or maybe early Friday. Depends on the work schedule. Also want to head to the Finger Lakes in mid July, so I can get my tan on at the Watkins Glen pool.
